On Christmas day when doctor who started all of my family and me watched it and within 25 minutes all my family fell asleep and I was left alone watching the flying fish and the giant shark

I think River song could be: the rani, the doctors wife, the future doctor or maybe even the doctors mum or sister

Started to watch this episode after looking forward to it for days.Within 15 minutes got bored and started playing on my wifes ipad.I was raised on Doctor Who and ‘The’ Doctor was Jon Pertwee-i’m 47 ! Matt Smith is really hard to understand. He mumbles. Not as ‘unwatchable’ as it used to be .

It was good but I don`t rate it as good a the superb previous christmas specials, but as i have been watching the doctor since episode 1,William Hartnel in the coal yard, nothing could sway my beleif that DR WHO is simply the finest SCI-FI series ever made.

I watched ‘the Christmas carol’ and I thought that it wasn’t as good as the rest of the doctor who Christmas specials.
I mean, who wants to watch stacey’s dramatic Christmas on eastenders anyway. I much prefer doctor who.
My personal favourite doctor who special was the end of time or the runaway bride.
also on the doctor who website, it says the matt smith is now going to wear a hat on scene!

    P.S bow ties are cool!

  16. Posted by: Anonymous January 1st, 2011 Reply

im sorry dr who fans eastenders is obviously better cause more people watched staceys dramatic ending too alien sharks fying around havnt seen the xmas specal i liked the runaway bride one best easteders forever <3

Well Dreamland kind of does count because it is still a story from the Doctor Who world.

  20. Posted by: R U N December 31st, 2010 Reply

Dr who coming second to Eastenders again?

    It should of been:
    1. Dr Who
    2. The One Ronnie
    3. Eastenders.
All Eastenders is some people arguing, and killing each other over boyfriends/girlfriends. Can’t belive its been on since 1985! Dr Who is way more exicting! But the two shows are very diffrent. Dr who is a sci-fi drama, Eastenders a soap opeara!

Series 6 looks amazing! Ood are back! China Dolls look creepy! River naked? Stetsons are cool! Cos they are! And the series will open with a two-parter and will be the fist dr who episodes ever to film in the US on location! Dreamland doesn’t count that was animated!
    :)

  21. Posted by: :) :D December 30th, 2010 Reply

Now that Dr who episode was BY FAR the most christmassy episode of Dr Who in its history! I think that the Dr who xmas thing was good, FLYING SHARKS AND FISH THAT SWIM IN FOG! omg! :) Very Funny! Some 1 liners! Micheal Gambon was great, ‘I dispise xmas!’ Katherine Jenkins good in her first acting role! Matt good as his is mostly! ALL cast members were good! But for oVERninght ratings 10.3m ain’t bad at all!
Series6 looks promising! STETSTONS ARE COOL! Then River shoots it! a bit like she shot his fez! OOD R BACK!
    yey!

    A Christmas Carol

Thought the episode was entertaining. I like Matt’s Doctor, and like his different approach. I am confused as to why Amy and Rory are still in the programme. Please Mr Moffatt, can we go back to 1 companion for 1 season. At this rate we will be heading for 3 companions in the show and that didn’t work when Peter Davison was the Doctor. Also can we go back to Murray Gold’s original theme too. With Amy and Rory can the Dr blow up one of the rooms in the tardis that they become trapped in?

  29. Posted by: Anonymous December 30th, 2010 Reply

disagree with people who said it shuld of got more views than EastEnders cause on EastEnders Stacey (one of the best charecters left)and the truth was out Janine stabbed herself and as a longtime Doctor Who fan i found it was BORING and should of cme 4th with Coronation Street 2nd and Emmerdale 3rd.Dr who is getting boring and the episodes are begging to drag it is not as scary they should make it more scary and move the time slot up to 8:00 i found Merlin and The Sarah Jane Adventures more scary.Well done EastEnders you deserved it seeing Stacey have her Happy Ever After with Lilly was better than dr who once again well done EastEnders,it was always going to beat a childrens tv show.

Doctor Who can be anything it wants to be.

Eastenders can only be a soap opera.

  30. Posted by: doctor 24/7 December 30th, 2010 Reply

no it should be the most watched! it was much beter than ‘eastenders’

  31. Posted by: Calum Smith December 29th, 2010 Reply

Yes, well quite a lot of us miss David Tennant, and I am certainly one. But I love Matt Smith’s approach to the show and the way he presents himself.

  32. Posted by: Tom Farrell December 29th, 2010 Reply

Long time fan, all the way back to jon Pertwee. Have to say this year’s xmas special best ever and Matt Smith truly a find as the Doc. Don’t miss the previous chap…Tennant, was that his name, at all.

Bit disappointed that show only attracted 10.3 million viewers…didn’t think Amy and Rory needed to be in it at all…use of song at end to tie the whole thing together a stroke of genius…loved the shark…stetsons ARE cool! Can’t wait for new series.

I’ve waited nearly 40 years for Dr Who to be on at Christmas…so don’t knock it while it lasts, people.

  33. Posted by: Steven :) December 29th, 2010 Reply

Does anyone else think that now The Doctor’s screwdrier was destroyed, he’ll start to use the one that River had in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead?

  34. Posted by: Calum Smith December 28th, 2010 Reply

It’d have been better if Amy and Rory weren’t in the special at all.

  35. Posted by: B-Me December 28th, 2010 Reply

I watched the Christmas special (on Christmas night in the Caribbean) and I really enjoyed it for what it was… mainly a heartwarming story based on the classic, A Christmas Carol. Why do people feel that every Dr. Who episode must be about the “monster of the week”? There was no need for monsters in this episode. Although outlandish, I can accept the flying fish and sharks as a plot device. Also why are people harping on Amy & Rory in the police woman/roman century costumes? They made it clear that they were on the ship for their honeymoon and they were fantasy role playing for each other before the liner started to crash AND it was a running joke throughout the episode(just be glad that we weren’t subjected to Rory being in a gimp costume instead). Lastly, Katherine Jenkins’ singing was beautiful.

  36. Posted by: biggestdoctorwhofanever! December 28th, 2010 Reply

I didnt like it. It was to confusing. I was so excited weeks before it premiered in the uk because of it being called “A Christmas Crol” and of it being based on Charles Dickins’ novel. Bt the idea of the fish were good.WIsh that the christmas special was totaly different and very exciting. Just like Tennents. But I am not saying that Matt’s first series was bad because I loved it. My favrioute episode was “the lodger”. It was amazing.

Whilst I defend everyone’s right to their opinion why are some people always so quick to berate things as if it’s cool to criticise rather than offer a reasoned review. I’ve just watched the Christmas Day episode again and got so much more from it. So it’s not exactly Dickens or Shakespeare but it still packed a punch and was well written. I thought the writing, the production values and pacing was spot on. Why has everyone got such a downer on Katherine Jenkins? Even in the newspapers they were slagging her off! What she ever done to upset anyone?? Her singing was beautiful and was used in an ingenius way. For her first acting role I thought she did a cracking job especially as she was on screen with the might that is Michael Gambon! The moving dilema of the one you love only having one more day to live and you having the power to choose the right day was very well delivered and elevates this way beyond just a kids show.
Overall I wasn’t disapointed by the episode. It certainly entertained me for the hour and even caused a lump in my throat at times.
Special praise to The Mill, I thought the visuals were cinematic standard, try and watch it in HD and you will see what I mean.
If you compare this to anything coming out of the states at the moment I think it is head and shoulders above it all in terms of standard of writing, production values, imagination and having real heart.
I’m sure it will take its right place in the list of everyones favourites but lets not call it rubbish when it clearly wasn’t. Yes say it wasn’t the best or your favourite but it certainly can’t be described as rubbish as that’s just lazy and undignified of lovers and supporters of Doctor Who and quality British entertainment.
Here’s to 2011 and another exciting year of Doctor Who.

    :D good 10.3 million! :) :) :) omg!

  39. Posted by: Andrew Hall December 28th, 2010 Reply

Dont like to complain but…well…i was a bit dissapointed. Thought the whole thing was a bit of a mess although there were a few nice elements – the sets and costumes of the locals were very good. I thought Matt was OTT in the first few scenes but eventually calmed down. I was glad Amy and Rory were kept in the background – i find them so annoying. Amy is no Donna! The story was ok but how lazy was the idea of the Fish just being sharks! I agree with Calum Smith on this one! Could the great Moffat not come up with an alien that could have been a better substitute rather than copping out with a cheap idea! If RTD had done this the fans would have been up in arms. And dont get me started on Catherine Jenkins! The whole episode seemed like an advertisment for her to sing a few times. Certainly not the best Xmas episode but at least the trailer for season 6 looks good…am pleased the Ood are back!

P.S. The fish…. well they were just pointless… and the shark(s)!

  43. Posted by: Calum Smith December 27th, 2010 Reply

Well… well… well… Steven Moffat has proved he can be an excellent writer when he really puts his mind to things… with the Time of Angels and Blink and other sorts, but seeing as he wrote this when he was stuck back in April due to the volcanic ash, I assume his mind was all over the place thinking “Hmmm, well if planes come crashing down to earth due to volcanic ash, how about a cruise-liner crashing to earth because of some cloud-belt thingy which I didn’t understand a thing about”. What a lazy idea, I thought Steven Moffat was better than that. So uninspirational, especially taking the idea from A Christmas Carol and calling the bleeding story ” A Christmas Carol”. The idea of Amy and Rory being in police and centurion outfit was disgraceful, what happened there? – could they not get a costume in time so they just whipped out any old costume from LAST series and asked them to wear it? Also, this thing about a “clever” twist on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, I don’t mean to be really harsh, but if I was Charles Dickens looking down on that on Xmas Day, I’d be disappointed that my book/film had been made a mess of.
The whole idea of Marilyn Monroe was silly and there was no need for it, neither was the fact that Abigail was brought to life every Xmas Eve to “play” for about half an hour then go back in her little hutch. I’m not sure we even got a logical explanation as to why people were actually locked in those hutch-ey things.
My compliments are that Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Michael Gambon and Katherine Jenkins worked very hard to produce such a complicated, un-make-sense-able story. And what’s with “Half way out of the dark”? And I don’t see why Arthur Darvill was cast – he only had about 3 lines.

    ALTHOUGH….
    SERIES 6 LOOKS… A M A Z I N G !!!!!!!!!!

i think this episode was awful!! They story was rubbish-nothing happened except the doctor constantly unfreezing a woman to play with her. the monster was rubbish-giant sharks-ooooooooh exciting, with AN even worse name-the fish. it was just very uninspired and boring. and amy was in her polcewoman outfit-but we barely got to see her. TOTAL RUBBISH
