The one that dissapoints me the most and has right through the New Who is every Companion has been a modern day English Person What about an Alien or an Historical character or someone from the future or someone from China, Japan or Nigeria. Jack was someone different but his was only a recurring role. Yes we have had a good range of Ethnicicity but they all live in England.
in the days of Tom Baker we had a Female Alien Barbarian and a Time Lady.

Nardole was an alien, then an alien cyborg.

    • Tyler Prescott

      July 16th, 2018 - 8:01pm

Nardole was only an alien/alien cyborg in terms of dialogue. He mentioned having some robotic limbs and body parts, but that was never utilised in the story at all. He might as well have been modern-day English, as he even took a selfie with the Doctor.

I agree with Mick, we need someone who isn’t modern-day English (British, really), and that means not modern day, and not English, not one or both.

They could still have a British accent, like most aliens in the show do anyway. Someone like Nyssa would be perfect in my opinion – she was alien, so not very knowledgeable about human behaviour, and having a quirky characteristic, while being portrayed by a British actor, with a British accent, looking human. It’s the best of both worlds, really.

I’m no convert to the gender swap, does not make sense.

The audience is clearly divided on the matter and it’s disappointing that those of us who are not converts to the swap are in the main, considered negative.

I love the classic series, and many facets of the new – but not this. I expect that I shall watch the new series, but as a general viewer of BBC drama, as opposed to being a Dr Who fan.

Well T that’s the point we won’t be expecting it?
I was always hopeful that Missy would be Romana having returned from E space and gone insane wanting to make the Doctor suffer for never going back to see her, so maybe Bradley is Romana? ?

Ahh the football commentary in the background – “it’s a big occasion” “out of this world” “they’ve got the makings of a really strong team”
Looking forward to whatever SDCC brings, and I’m genuinely interested to see what publicity the series gets as we approach broadcast. Will there be more of these teasers? How many trailers will we see (and how often)?
It’s pretty much a clean slate for this series – perhaps more so than for series 5 (when the show’s continued success was much less certain). I’m excited to see this!

T you are being unfair on ADAM he was vocal like myself about the state of Doctor Who last year and unhappy with Jodie being cast.
Many are still struggling with Jodie as am I, time is needed to get around this change and I am certain many will stop watching!
I’m sure ADAM will watch the new series because he like myself are life long fans who are still aggrieved with the direction the show has taken, time is needed. He is entitled to his opinion and I will defend anyone who is against the new format simply because they have the right to be.

    • The Moffat Paradox

      July 16th, 2018 - 9:16pm

And as one who has shared ADAM and Pats86’s scepticism here from the start T we still have to see as I said earlier what the proper trailer at SDCC and any afterwards when mass released might reveal OTHER than just the characters. And IF our worst fears are confirmed so that it no longer looks and feels enough like quintessential Who, even with agendas still being peddled, then not watching it isn’t going to be difficult.

    • ADAM

      July 17th, 2018 - 12:40pm

Like many i shall watch the first episode…more out of curiosity than anything else….

But my views haven’t changed on the whole gender swap and Ms whittaker’s casting….

My negativity, like the two gentle men above and the many others comes from being a life long passionate fan and wanting it to be the best it can be…
But changing the gender of a fifty five plus year old male character for the sake of the political climate we now live in ain’t a good move…no matter what spin you may want to put on it….
The show just needed better writing and storytelling not stunt casting..
The saddest part is that fandom is still very much split…and that ain’t good for the future of the show…

    • Pats86

      July 18th, 2018 - 6:30am

ADAM I have said the same thing numerous times, unfortunately it does not mean anything now the damage is a done thing, we can only hope it doesn’t go under.
I don’t want it to fail because it can be fixed if indeed it needs to, It is upto Jodie to make it work now.

    • simon.ss1

      July 18th, 2018 - 10:38pm

Jodie Whittaker won’t be able to make it work for me. It’s got nothing at all to do with the actress. I’m sure she’ll be very good. (Apart from the ‘reveal’ and the end of Twice Upon A Time, I’ve never seen Ms Whittaker in anything, so make no judgement at all about her acting abilities.)

But the problem is that the gender change has created a completely different character so it’s no longer Doctor Who.

DC Comics (or whoever it was behind the creation of Superman) didn’t turn Superman into a woman. Unlike the BBC, instead of hi-jacking an established and successful format, they had the vision and creative imagination to devise a new character, Superwoman/Supergirl. She took off (literally!) to become a hugely successful character in her own right.

Imagine the outcry if Warner Bros. turned the latest TV version of Supergirl into a man!

Of course it wouldn’t be the same show.

And that’s the problem I have with what the BBC have done to Doctor Who.

      July 18th, 2018 - 12:56pm

I have to agree with doctor stu, bill was the first compaion, I notice who’s acting wasn’t that good, especially during emotional or serious scenes, like when she’s arguing with 12 in thin ice. She definitely acted the worst in the Christmas special.

But don’t you just love the mystery behind it all? Most company’s show far to much and you end up knowing the plot from just 1-2 trailers. Why does everyone want to know everything. Imagine how amazing the new TARDIS reveal in thr Snowman would have been has we thougjht it would just be the series 5/6 one. Some things are best left unknown until broadcast. I just feel like this show will never do right at the moment, no matter what.

The visuals look excellent and the trailer itself was mehhh, left me confused as to what the point and direction was. Still not hip on this, she should have just been cast as Romana… Would have loved the fresh take on a time Lord following her adventures. What’s wrong with an original series with a female lead? Do we really need to gender swap? At least the Master regeneration into Missy made a great deal of sense being that the master is totally into disguises and messing with the doctors mind. (Albeit she would have made an excellent Rani)

    • T.A

      July 15th, 2018 - 7:27pm

Missy was a good master for me, but she didn’t feel really truly like the master for me, she didn’t have presence of being an evil person you hate, and I think the relationship between her and twelve was werid, we have John Simms master who hates the doctor and is pure evil, and then regenerates into missy, who suddenly wants to be his best friend, even though they have currently been enemies for centuries. I do think she would have played a better Rani then missy.

    • Doctor Stu

      July 16th, 2018 - 3:55pm

Exactly another enemy Moffatt irreversibly turned good. The Master, the Zygons, the Silurians, the sontarans, the silence and the ice warriors are all now more or less comrades, meaning any story with them as an antagonist has to undo moffats tinkering.

    • T.A

      July 16th, 2018 - 4:34pm

I didn’t mind missy turning good, my only problem with it, was it felt force, like the master said in the time monster I will be good and lied, but missy said it and she turned good, another reason why she doesn’t feel like the master to be. If she had enough of the killing and wanted it find a different path with the doctors help ,then it would feel more natural.

Really sad to see how negative people are boo boo. Personally I can’t wait. When Jodie appeared at the end, I just thought how brilliant she looked. Makes me laugh though, if this trailer had shown all the monsters in the new series they would have complained about that too! This trailer is just to show the main chararacters, that’s all. Can’t help feeling that many of the regular negative posters are not going to give the series a fair chance and will just be hypercritical no matter how the series goes.
