Series 10 Episode 5 Oxygen 7.15PM Saturday 13th May

The Doctor is played by Peter Capaldi, Bill by Pearl Mackie and Nardole by Matt Lucas.

This week, capitalism gets it in the neck, because capitalism is bad, mkay!

It’s laughable how bad capitalism is when a company can spend a ton of money on an operation like this, just to mine copper ore, and not be bankrupt yet.

Equally as laughable as peeps droning on about human efficiency. If only they had powered suits that could do the work on their own without the need for humans…uhmm, like the one they showed in this episode. Oops! Actually, why isn’t this entire operation automated? Oh, the humans are needed for the plot of this effort.

The strange oxygen economy isn’t explained much at all and just comes across as convoluted. The Doctor and company get “2000 breaths” each, for free, for some reason. As for measuring distances in “average breaths”, that’s about as meaningless as measuring the distances in Pepe memes.

The suits are the gifts that just keep on giving. If all the oxygen is only available in a suit, how do the humans sleep, wash, or even go to the flipping toilet? At the beginning, you have one female crew member talking about wanting to have a baby with a male crew member. That’s gonna be interesting, seeing as they’ll definitely have to be wearing space suits for that “exercise”. And what of the baby, when it’s born? I don’t think the suits are one size fits all.

The ending made about as much sense as their poor (as in makes you poor) version of capitalism, and, to top it off, they didn’t even show HQ.

Oh, yeah; blue dude there for some social justice comedy. Because that type of humour never gets old.

Something that has occured to me, is that as Missy returns in Extremis, wont she wonder where Clara is? After all, she was the one that made it so the Doctor and Clara met each other (the woman in the shop). With the Doctor been made to forget Clara, MIssy should still remember her.

And what happens if he does remember Clara? Does his mind burn up or something, hope Moffat has remembered what he wrote previously so that everything fits in and makes sense.

      When did Moffat write that?

‘Death in Heaven’ is where that bit about Missy putting the two together comes from I believe.

Hopefully it will be ignored completely. I’ve had more than enough of that ‘Impossible Girl’ nonsense to last me 13 life times. Clara should have left in series 8. Besides, Missy probably won’t care, companions come and go constantly. Shes got Bill and Nardole to deal with now.

Oh sorry I meant about what the original commenter wrote about the Doctor remembering Clara and how that should apparently burn his mind.. I don’t remember Moffat writing anything about that in the past.

I totally agree with you on the ‘Impossible Girl’ thing, I don’t want to hear anything more about it!

      May 13th, 2017 - 6:51pm

The original poster was asking a question they were saying ‘what happens if he does remember, will his mind burn up?’ They weren’t saying that moffatt wrote that

Missy’s really good idea could be wiping her memory of Clara? She spent a bit of time with her in this episode so she most likely had had enough of her. I know I would if I could.

Oh okay, the fact that the original poster used a comma between the sentences about the Doctor’s mind burning and Moffat writing made me think that the sentences were linked…

It says they lose the TARDIS, obviously to isolate them for the plot which isn’t a problem but I hope there’s a good explanation as to how they eventually get the TARDIS back, I hope it’s not a cop out witches familiar tardis return or moffat inventing a new power the TARDIS has that allows it to return. Is this just me being picky. I think it is

I agree. I found last weeks ending a bit of a cop out at the end. I think the villain for this one is corporate greed rather than something that is ‘Misunderstood’. I mean, Misunderstood is fine and dandy, but it shouldn’t be the case for every story. Sometimes we need the big bads to be real villains.

Looking into my temporal schism I think the Doctors regeneration will start in this one and that nardole has some Cyberman in him. As for who is in the vault ….I’m going the celestial Toymaker,no evidence to back this up

OMG! I THINK I JUST WORKED OUT WHO IS IN THE VAULT.

Prediction: Missy (I know you think its obvious but keep reading!)

Evidence: Missy is in ep6 and thats when the secret of the vault is going to be revealed!

Massive Peice Of Evidence: If you pause the Series 10 Trailer at 39-40 seconds you will see Missy lying on something that looks a bit like a piano (there is a piano in the vault, watch end of knock knock). Also Missy seems to be in a cage for most of the trailer… A cage, a prison, a VAULT…

Weeping Angel, very well spotted indeed! I too thought this, but felt i may have been put down by others. It does make a lot of sense. The only thing that doesnt, is how the hell did she manage to escape from the Daleks on Skaro when she mentioned having “a very clever idea”?

But am liking your theory very much.

Maybe she did a similar thing to the doctor in Day of the Doctor! When 11 had a thought that slowly went back through all his lives and they all worked together to save Gallifrey.

Maybe Missy had a similar idea with the Masters and they helped get her off Skaro!

Thx catnip. I think that Missy could have escaped from Skaro like when we thought she died in Death in Heaven but she came back.

    • The Outcast

      May 13th, 2017 - 2:48pm

110% is Missy. Either that, or she freed whatever was in the vault and put herself inside to mock the Doctor.

I feel this will be a good storyline, Bill obviously wont die as shown in the trailer, as shes in the whole series. Could just be a shape shifter that takes Bill’s appearance and then dies.

Very happy to see the funny Nardole is in the whole episode as he has a good rapport with the Doctor.

Finally, as the next episode is the return of Missy, hopefully we will get to see just who/what is behind those vault doors, preferably before it cuts to the credit sequence.

4 episodes down, only 9 left. Then a big gap (once again) till the Capaldi finale. Just a shame that Pearl Mackie wont be in series 11 with the Thirteenth Doctor, whoever HE is.

No I actually prefer Hell Bent to Sleep No More, was a bit all over the place but there was still stuff going on at least and an actual plot. SNM was in my opinion the most boring, dull and pointless episode I’ve ever seen – so much so that I can’t even accept it as an episode and don’t know how anyone could find it entertaining.

What are you talking about? What about the people killed in ‘smile’ or in ‘Thin Ice’? A fair few characters stayed dead from those episodes? Heck, they even addressed this in Thin Ice. And I don’t think the Landlord and his mother left completely in one piece (or in any pieces at all) after yesterday’s episode… Also, I don’t believe that the people who had been consumed by the house before the events of the episode were shown to survive. Maybe if you’d commented that before series 10 and after Hell Bent you’d have some credibility.
You do make a good point about the Reset Button trait, but that’s nothing new to Doctor Who, especially since they started making 45 minute long stories.

    • Pats86

      May 7th, 2017 - 5:20pm

Not many though is it? And they all came back in ‘smile’ didn’t they?
as you say “a few” stay dead.
Danny Pink, Missy, Osgood, and worst of all Clara, all main characters all not actually dead….that is what I’m talking about.

    • The Temporal Jelly Baby

      May 7th, 2017 - 5:44pm

Those who died in Smile stayed dead. Danny Pink is dead. Why would Missy/The Master be killed off? The original Osgood might be dead. I agree with Clara, though technically we have seen her death – that death did still happen.

Besides, let’s watch the episode before judging it, eh? Maybe there will be a reset button and maybe there won’t. We’ll find out when we watch it.

    • pats86

      May 7th, 2017 - 7:51pm

I was only saying, touched a nerve have I? I am holding out for something exciting/original for a change, but yes I agree, let’s watch before judging. Pardon me for not lording the great and never to be criticised Moffat!

    • pats86

      May 7th, 2017 - 7:54pm

And technically Clara is still alive, she can still come back and spoil the show!

    • The Living Shadow

      May 7th, 2017 - 9:15pm

It’s not a case of “touching a nerve”. The points you were trying to make aren’t entirely correct… I thought maybe it’d help you look at the show in a better light if I corrected you, as in a number of ways, your problems are not the case. And we don’t like to have problems with Doctor Who… do we?
Also, I’m not saying you shouldn’t criticise Moffat, and with Clara you have a good point, and I agree it’s really annoying when people refer to Moffat as a genius and put him on a massive pedestal. In fact I feel the same way about Russell T Davies, when people claim that the ‘Tennant years were so much better’ when that era has a lot of the same (if not more) problems as Doctor Who in recent years, so I do understand your frustration.

    • The Temporal Jelly Baby

      May 7th, 2017 - 9:17pm

Potentially, yes, though I hope Steven Moffat has learned his lesson after Hell Bent. I won’t mind if she plays a small part in the regeneration sequence so that the Doctor starts to remember or something.
For the record, I’m not afraid to criticise elements of the show as you suggest (Moffat included). For example, I am one of the many who didn’t like Hell Bent (apart from the first 15 minutes or so).

    • Mrewanwatson

      May 7th, 2017 - 2:38pm

Yeah I believe that Series 9 was much more of a series with a great premise (i.e the hybrid) but such an awful payoff (basically the whole series) but Series 10 is much more enjoyable and I think it’s brilliant so far.

    • The Living Shadow

      May 7th, 2017 - 9:19pm

I loved most of series 9, but for me, Hell Bent really left a bad taste, and then for that to be our last episode before a year long hiatus really didn’t help (minus the Christmas specials)!

    • The Temporal Jelly Baby

      May 7th, 2017 - 9:43pm

For my final series 9 ratings in 2015 (out of 10), I gave five episodes 9 to 10 and another four episodes 4 to 6. Simply put, some episodes were really great in my opinion and others were quite underwhelming. The plot arc was intriguing throughout but ended up being awful in Hell Bent. So far, for me, series 10 has been consistently good with another intriguing plot arc. I haven’t given a single episode 9 or 10 out of 10 yet but my scores have been consistently decent so far. And I hope some really great stuff is coming our way!

    • Tim M

      May 8th, 2017 - 10:41am

Series 9 was a mixed bag. It started brilliantly with the Davros two larger. But was very hit and miss after that. More misses (ooh er misses!) than hits in my opinion. I got bored with Clara (Surely her story arc finished with Matt Smith!), and I didn’t rate the hybrid storyline. The ‘Me’ character didn’t work for me. Once again it’s another character that seemingly lives on forever, or a long time at least (Captain Jack for example). It kind of diminishes the Doctors unique ability of regeneration, if ‘side’ characters can do better and not change…and seemingly live forever. Makes it all a joke really.
