Tardis Sound Heard at Olympic Opening

Something “Doctor Who” at Olympic opening ceremony

The Tardis engines were briefly heard at the Olympic opening ceremony. Newspapers had reported the theme tune was on a list due to played at the event which evidently was untrue.

However videos taken by the public show that a montage of The Doctors was shown on a big screen at rehearsals.

Recorded TV Videos of the Tardis sound have been blocked.

In an interview, Boyle indicated that more of a Who reference was thought to be inappropriate given that Dr Who was created by a Canadian, not a Brit, and this would be confusing given that the last Olympics were in Canada.

“Rubbish music”…haha…the song that was playing at the time is pretty much the best song ever to come out of this country….but I do share your disappointment…never believe the hype. At the end of the day, the Olympics is the biggest global event in the world of sport…and, despite recent recognition in the US, Doctor Who is pretty much unheard of outside of the UK…so I am actually suprised it featured at all.

      From Edward Russell ‏

A video montage which very briefly showed all 11 Doctors was approved but we were told it may not be included which was clearly the case.

apparently parts of the opening had to be cut short

I find it ironic that the TARDIS arrived during Bohemian Rhapsody. Which, Matt and Karen and Arthur sang at Comic Con.

      Coincidence?

I think not. The Doctor always says that there is no such thing as coincidences and everything happens for a reason.

      July 28th, 2012 - 8:08pm

      @Rooners

It should have nothing to do with the world. And actually, regardless of it being aired in other countries, Doctor Who is quite popular all over the world. Maybe not largely, but go on the internet and look around in Doctor Who forums and other places and you’ll find people from everywhere who love the show.

And regardless, the show is one of BRITAIN’S most beloved shows and has been airing for almost 50 years, either threw re-runs or actual series. It should have been given more recognition.

      July 29th, 2012 - 12:02am

I’m pretty sure I saw the fourth Doctor in the montage on the house, and I think they showed another of the older Doctors too.

I am American, but I was really hoping that as a British show, Doctor Who would have more recognition than it got. Maybe in the closing ceremonies…

Someone described Doc Who as “pretty much unheard of outside the UK.” I disagree. From the US. We were a significant bunch of fans in 1981, and I think there are a LOT more around after the recent serieses. Woot!

The Doctor Who theme, along with a few others, WAS due to be played, but it was cut due to time constraints. The show over-ran so The Doctor Who theme, Coronation Street theme, Monty Python, Oasis’s Wonderwall song and one or two other bits were all dropped.

Danny Boyle was reported to be furious.

I was honestly thinking that guy would go out of breath and David Tennant in full Doctor Who style would take over. Clever cauldron, though, wasn’t it?

I think for a show that’s 49 going on 50 they should have done something on a bigger scale, like… a TARDIS being behind the tree or something Doctor who related.

Honestly, I felt that the inclusion was the perfect nod to the Doctor. Those who know him have all immediately recognized his materialization. But to those who don’t know him, it was merely noise and not enough to warrant further thought. (I mean, all the companions come running from blocks away when the TARDIS lands in a city, yet no one else ever takes notice). Plus, The Doctor has never gone out of his way to grab the limelight. He (mostly) just observes. So I think that was Danny’s way of letting us, those in the know, know that the Doctor was indeed there, and that if he had to step in to stop any threat, then we will never have to know. Because that is the true Doctor, the silent guardian.

    Stuff the Olympics 😛

I only stayed up until 11.00am expecting to hear the Doctor Who theme with everyone their cheering the theme tune, not to just hear the Tardis englines go off and just leave it at that.

Christ I hope the next two weeks of this Olympic waste-of-time-and-more-importantly-MONEY just flies past at warp speed . . . . “Engage !!” 😀
