Doctor Who Dreamland

Dreamland is the new six-part animation starring David Tennant as the Doctor! The adventure begins on Saturday, 21st November and you can watch every episode on Red Button and on the BBC site!

When the Doctor arrives in a quiet diner in the Nevada desert in the 1950s, it’s only a few moments before he’s up to his sonic screwdriver in trouble! He’s soon pitted against a terrifying alien race called the Viperox led by the lethal Lord Azlok, but he also meets two new companions to help him out. There’s Cassie Rice, played by Georgia Moffett (Doctor Who, Spooks) and Jimmy played by Tim Howar (Last Chance Harvey). Screen legend David Warner also stars as the ruthless Lord Azlok and Clarke Peters (The Wire) plays Night Eagle.

Dreamland is written by Phil Ford (Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures) and has enough action, drama and humour to fill a TARDIS!

We’re delighted that we can at last confirm that Dreamland will debut on Red Button and on this site on Saturday, November 21st.

As we’ve already confirmed, it’s a six part adventure, and details about individual episodes are starting to emerge… details below. Is this the kind of story that you were expecting? What do you think are going to be the dramatic highlights? And after reading these details, are there any characters or creatures you’re really looking forward to seeing?

Episode 1

Dry Springs, Nevada, 1958. The Doctor befriends a young waitress, Cassie, and her friend, Jimmy, at a diner. The Doctor activates an alien artefact and, after finding further signs of alien activity, the US Army intervenes and takes him and his new companions to the mysterious Area 51 in Roswell, where they find out about Operation Fallen Angel. Will Operation leader Colonel Stark succeed in making the curious trio forget what they have just seen?

Episode 2

Seeking refuge in the abandoned town of Solitude, Jimmy stumbles across a disconcerting discovery and the trio encounter Viperox royalty.

Episode 3

The Doctor cannot understand why the Alliance of Shades’ mop-up team are more concerned with the whereabouts of a piece of space flight hardware than the hordes of Viperox pods hidden underground. Things start to fall into place when Jimmy’s grandfather, Night Eagle, introduces the Doctor to Rivesh Mantilax.

Episode 4

Captured by the US Army, Rivesh is finally reunited with his wife, Saruba Velak. Meanwhile, the Doctor discovers the unsettling truth about his real identity.

Episode 5

The Doctor and Saruba have to confront the mysterious alien force in the vault housing her space ship if they are to save her husband and stop Lord Azlok from rousing his sleeping army.

Episode 6

As sunset falls, the Viperox drones start to attack the US Army base. Can the Doctor find a way to halt the seemingly unstoppable aliens in their tracks?

Doctor Who Dreamland First Clip

The first clip from Doctor Who Dreamland has been released on the official blog.

The clip shows The Doctor, Cassie Rice, Jimmy Stalkingwolf and a new alien The Doctor calls a “Viperox Battle Drone”.

It can also be viewed on BBC HD where it’s part of a new preview reel premiering later today.

Later this year there will be a new Doctor Who story to watch on Red Button. It’s an animated adventure called Dreamland and will star David Tennant as the Doctor!

The BBC today released the first image of the animated Doctor as he will appear in the new animation, Dreamland, which is due for broadcast later this year.

The six-part series will be premiered on the BBC Red Button and the Doctor Who website (bbc.co.uk/doctorwho).

The 45-minute long animation will be broadcast in its entirety on CBBC on BBC Two this Autumn and also on the BBC HD channel.

Written by Phil Ford (Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures) Dreamland will see the Doctor – played by David Tennant – arrive at the infamous alien hot spot, Roswell.

During a visit to a local diner he stumbles upon a mysterious alien artefact that leads him on a mission to rescue Rivesh Mantilax from the threat of the Viperox and the clutches of the American military.

Joining David Tennant will be Georgia Moffett (Doctor Who, Spooks) in the role of Cassie Rice – the Doctor’s new animated companion.

David Warner (Wallander, Hogfather) also stars as the leader of the ruthless Viperox.

In the run up to the animation, fans will be able to visit the Doctor Who website (bbc.co.uk/doctorwho) to follow a behind-the-scenes production blog on the making of Dreamland, giving the opportunity to follow the progress of the animation as it develops.

Dreamland was commissioned by BBC Drama Multiplatform and will be produced for the BBC by Brighton-based animation company Littleloud.

It is being executive produced by Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner and Piers Wenger, with Gary Russell as director.

Russell T Davies said: “Dreamland is a remarkable project and I’m thrilled with it. Phil Ford is a wonderful writer and promises to send the Doctor into a whole new visual dimension.”

Rosie Allimonos, BBC Drama Multiplatform Commissioner, said: “I‘m extremely excited about Dreamland. It presents an amazing opportunity to expand the multiplatform storytelling potential of Doctor Who.

“To offer the ability to watch this brand new Doctor Who animation on so many different BBC platforms is a real treat for our audience.”

Richard Deverell, Controller, BBC Children’s, said: “This is a wonderful addition to the already fantastic portfolio of CBBC programming. Having talent like Russell T Davies and Phil Ford at the helm of this project will no doubt ensure it captures the imagination of CBBC viewers.”

Award-winning channel CBBC also further reinforced its commitment to British animation as it announced that online portal Cartoon Works is expanding to become a new destination to premiere short-form content from the UK animation industry.

CBBC has also commissioned brand new animation Muddle Earth, based on the much-loved children’s books by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell, and Shaun The Sheep returns to screens this Autumn in a series of new exploits.

BBC Red Button has provided interactive services on digital TV for the past 10 years and is now reaching an average audience of 11 million viewers a week accessing a whole range of BBC content.

It provides audiences with access to the latest News, Weather and other general information, while also enabling the delivery of an enhanced experience across major sporting and entertainment events.

The BBC have also put up a new blog following the new adventure’s production process.
