Torchwood The New World – Synopsis

The Starz Press-room has release the synopsis for Torchwood The New World…

When C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy, he finds himself unearthing a threat which challenges the entire human race.

The answers seem to lie within an old, secret British institute, known only as Torchwood. But Torchwood was destroyed, years ago, and the keys to the institute are held by its only two survivors – former Police Officer Gwen Cooper, who has long since disappeared along with her husband and child, and the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, a man whose history seems to stretch back centuries.

With Rex under attack from all sides, in both the US and the UK, he soon discovers there are forces at work within every level of society, determined to stop Torchwood’s return. As a chain of events across the world links together the most disparate and unlikely individuals – including a surgeon, a killer, senators and CEOs – a new Torchwood team takes shape. But this time, the threat is much closer to home, as they realize that their greatest enemy is mankind itself…

Torchwood: The New World

Various news sources have revealed the title of the new, 10 part series of of Torchwood due in 2011.

From The Hollywood Repoerter…

‘Torchwood’ gets new title: ‘The New World’

Starz’ “Torchwood” reboot will be titled “Torchwood: The New World” and creator Russell T Davies gave some insight into the storyline.

The new story will follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue. Torchwood, having been destroyed and disbanded, is “like a legend now … it’s like something that’s ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers.” Soon, Rex and Ester are on the run and are seeking out the help of Captain Jack and Gwen.

“The two teams coming together is a big part of the story — are they friends or enemies? There’s a lot of sparks and excitement.

According to The Hollywood reporter an American version of Torchwood is being developed.

According to reports fox has now stated this will not go ahead although talks with other networks are continuing

Torchwood Exclusive: Huge news for sci-fi fans: Fox is developing a stateside version of the U.K. hit series “Torchwood.”</strong

A more straight-faced spinoff of “Doctor Who,” “Torchwood” is about a covert group that investigates and fights alien activity. Two series aired domestically on BBC America as well as last year’s well reviewed stand-alone miniseries, “Children of Earth,” which broke all ratings records for the network.

Unlike U.S. adaptations that have gone awry, “Torchwood” fans can take comfort that the original producing team is on board. In addition to Davies, exec producers include Davies’ producing partner Julie Gardner (former head of drama at BBC Wales for the show’s first season) and Jane Tranter (another BBC vet, now exec VP programming and production at BBC Worldwide Prods. in the U.S.).

Also, some of the current cast — most likely John Barrowman, who plays the immortal Capt. Jack Harkness — might star if Fox orders “Torchwood” to pilot.

“Bernard Cribbins has made an amazing contribution to children’s entertainment throughout his outstanding career. He was very much loved for his story-telling on Jackanory – he holds the record for appearing on the show 110 times – and is still entertaining children today, now playing Wilfred Mott in ‘Doctor Who’. He is a worthy recipient of this year’s Special Award; in fact he deserved it a long time ago! We are absolutely delighted he has accepted.”

Bernard, who will collect the Award from his Doctor Who co-star Catherine Tate, commented:

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies has the future of the hit Doctor Who spin-off all planned out...

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies has the future of the hit Doctor Who spin-off all planned out, he has told the new issue of Torchwood Magazine.

“I could write you scene one of series four right now”, says Davies in a revealing interview with Torchwood Magazine. “I know exactly how to pick it up. I’ve got a shape in mind, and I’ve got stories. I know where you’d find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you’d go forward with a new form of Torchwood.”

The news will come as a tonic to fans of the show, which enjoyed runaway
success in the ratings when the latest series Children of Earth screened
over five nights in July this year. The dramatic finale and the death of
much-loved team member Ianto Jones had fans fearing the worst for the future
of the show, but Davies’ positive comments will re-ignite hopes that
Torchwood will once again return to television screens.

Davies is also confident of writing another compelling series of Torchwood,
regardless of the format the BBC decides to choose for the show.

“If the BBC asked for another 13 one-part stories, that’s what we’d do”,
Davies goes on to explain to Torchwood Magazine. “I’m ready for anything,
but I think it works well as one continuous story. But if the BBC decide
they want 13 one-offs, I’ll suddenly decide that’s the best format in the
world!”

The prolific writer, widely credited with sparking the recent revival of
parent show Doctor Who, goes on to talk candidly about the origins of
Torchwood, and why he thinks the timing was all important for the success of
the show.

“It’s been a very intelligent decision to make hay while the sun shines”, he
says. “Look at the recession that’s sweeping in now. If I’d tried to get
Torchwood off the ground now, they would say there’s no money for it. So
while we had one very successful show, we made a strategic decision to push
our advantage. Julie [Gardner, then Head of Drama at BBC Wales] passionately
wanted a big, strong Welsh drama department but one show is not a drama
department, You’ve got to have more, so we did it while those doors were
open to us.”

After Davies’ incredible successes on British shores, where he has also
penned the acclaimed drama serials Queer as Folk and The Second Coming, the
writer is looking forward to his next challenge across the Atlantic.

Davies tells Torchwood Magazine he believes his trade is taken much more
seriously in the USA than it is at home in the UK:

“The attitudes towards drama there are very different, and their outlook is
more professional in terms of how they approach the job. I heard this
brilliant quote from [acclaimed British screenwriter] Frank Cottrell Boyce
recently, where he said that British writers are essentially amateur and
they want to go home or go to the pub, but in America they can¹t wait to go
in to the office.”

Russell T Davies interview appears in Torchwood Magazine Issue 17

On sale in the UK – 20 Aug 2009
On sale in the US – Sept 15 2009
