I’m really sorry everyone, but why do you hate this story? My whole family loved this story because Matt Smith was finally able to be himself again. In Series 5, he was funny and eccentric. But last year he was mysterious and annoying. The stories didn’t even make SENSE last year (including “A Christmas Carol”). This story shows that Steven Moffat is trying to go back to how the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory were originally like. It was an amazing story; it made my family laugh but it also made us cry. Amazing acting from the whole cast, and whats more an AMAZING story.

the voting suggests most people enjoyed it even though the majority of comments are negative

I wouldn’t say I hated it but when talking about the Christmas special, the clue really is in the name. For sure there was plenty of Christmas but really nothing special. As a standalone episode it fails to live up to some of the Doctor ‘light’ stories of the RTD era that left us feeling a little cheated at the time. I’ll be waiting for next years box set rather than rushing out to buy the one off Blu Ray, then I’ll skip to the next story.

Feeling worried that it was easy to follow as the moff wrote it

Better then last years. No trailer thou for Series 7 which would normally be shown at the end of a Christmas special to show what’s to come in the new year.

Another festive stinker. Derivative, mawkish and dull. Next time please can we have:

1 A plot that does not involve the notion that there is something so special about human relationships that threats of planetary proportions are thereby overcome. This is lazy, patronising and predictable.
2 A story that is not populated by insecure children.
3 No facile eco-message. This episode made even The Green Death seem subtle by comparison.
    4 Proper monsters?

    2/10

Wasn’t That Good But Was Better Than Last Year’s Christmas Special

The tradition of a Christmas story kills itself. Because it has to have a Christmas feeling it,s too predictable. It was real bad.

Hmmmm, poor christmas episode again. Didnt like last years and this one was no better. Tree people looked nice but the whole story was rushed. Moff is certainly loosing his touch……..

  • I Love Cybermen

    December 26th, 2011 - 12:58am

Brilliant episode! Full of warmph and Christmas cheer! as for those complaining there were no real monsters…all the best monsters are ‘victims’ or sympathetic…What about frankenstein or the Wolfman?…Or, in the case of Dr Who, the greatest monster threat of all (in my view) the cybermen? They weren’t evil. So? They scared and were a threat. That was their purpose. I thought they were magnificent and I hope they bring some figures out of them…

Managed to catch up with a repeat of the xmas show yesterday. It wasnt too bad, a good few funny jokes here and there, but overall a bit lame. Our son was a bit scared of the wooden people. I know they havent started filming the next series yet but personally I would’ve finished the story with a cliffhanger so that we could look forward to whats in store next year.
      my rating 6/10

      January 2nd, 2012 - 12:03pm

If your son was scared by the wooden people, well thats a good thing, isn’t it?

This is the problem i fear with where Dr Who is going.. I fear it’s trying to gear itself to a younger and younger audience..

The “God Complex” Episode, was my favorite, cause it freaked me out.. The Doctor needs a real challenge, and something mysterious and scary gives us just that….

What hell was that ??? I’m just going to re-watch “The eand of Time” and the others Doctor Who specials…Maybe it’s time for Moffat to go before he ruines the show…

This years xmas special was good to watch but it was disappointing. The best scene out of the whole episdoe was the ending.

  • Admiral Icktheus

    December 25th, 2011 - 8:46pm

It was disappointing. Recently some of Moffats episodes have been predictable and I do like Moffat for sure but it was easily predictable. I could see the ending coming a mile off. Matt Smiths acting was brilliant and he handled the comedic scenes well and some of the other acting was decent but the story did seem a bit of a mess, no it was quite a big mess to be honest. I am going to rewatch it later but I wasn’t too keen on it. 6/10

    • The Moffat Paradox

      December 26th, 2011 - 4:22pm

That’s because Moffat dosen’t really do plot coherence and internal logic in storytelling and if that’s said his defenders say we “dont get it”.

I think we get it all too well which is why many a casual viewer dismisses it as utter tosh whatever the viewing figures say.

Yes come back RTD! All is forgiven!

You would think it would be understood that fans would just like to see the Doctor save universe (and Christmas)from foes like the Daleks/Cybermen.

AS in the Next Doctor 2008 Christmas special which I think has been the only one that’s been really any good.

    • Admiral Icktheus

      December 26th, 2011 - 5:51pm

No I don’t want RTD back. Moffat has taken the show back to it’s original roots. Whilst the story arcs may annoy some, there will be a resoloution to them eventually and even if they are sometimes predictable they are acted out well. The only Moffat story I properly hate is Lets Kill Hitler due to the potential it could have had.

I got really excited for this episode. There was no threat. No real ‘blockbuster’ feeling. I’d rather have watched The Next Doctor.

And that is precisely why I disliked this christmas special.

  • ClassicSeries4Ever

    December 25th, 2011 - 8:36pm

What a dreadful episode! The space ship crash and the beginning was never explained and the direction of the “I know” scenes was ridiculous! There was also a stupid resolution of the father surviving by flying through the time vortex! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?! Also, why are the Ponds in it again!!!! Why can’t they just be written out! 3/10, because there was a reference to Androzani. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

      no it didnt.
      what was the spaceship?
      why an exploding button?
      why was he there?
did everyone else die on the spaceship????

and while im on the subject…
can he breathe in a vacume?
      does he have space eyes???

      what was the point?????

    absolute RUBBISH and boring.

  • Barrystam

    December 25th, 2011 - 8:24pm

Rubbish episode, Moffat cannot produce, and the series just gets worse.

Sorry, wish I could say otherwise.

    • Nigel M

      December 25th, 2011 - 9:57pm

Moffat wrote some of my favourite episodes since the series came back, The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Silence in the Library, Forest of the Dead. I can’t believe how bad it’s become with him in charge.

    • dw205

      December 26th, 2011 - 11:19pm

RTD’s era was in opinion much better than steven moffat’s.

  • Nigel M

    December 25th, 2011 - 8:14pm

I was really looking forward to it but it was average at best. In fact some of it was just plain daft – trees creating a space rocket, time-travelling escape pod that was relying on a human host to come along in the nick of time ?

Good to see the Ponds at the end though.

    • Commander Strax

      December 27th, 2011 - 1:37pm

      trees were the space rocket

  • Fishy Frank

    December 25th, 2011 - 8:08pm

It was single-handedly the worst episode of Dr Who ever. Steven Moffat needs to go. 1: How did the Doctor breathe in space at the beggining. 2: Only time machines can travel in the time vortex, so why the hell was there just a random entry into it in the middle of space. If so, fair enough that the spherical ship flew into it, but that plane? WHAT THE HELL. That would not be able to withstand the conditions of the time vortex. MOFFAT OUT.

    • Nigel M

      December 25th, 2011 - 8:22pm

Add to that the impact from orbit that created a massive, deep crater but left the doctor in one piece. I know you have to take the program with a pinch of salt but this was a mess.

    • Fishy Frank

      December 25th, 2011 - 9:33pm

I know, it’s saddening to see the show turn to this.

    • Nigel M

      December 25th, 2011 - 9:47pm

The more I think about it the worse it gets. The Tardis just happened to be parked in the village near where the Doctor landed from orbit ? He didn’t have the ability to call it himself (we saw that from the trailer) so how did it get there ? Doesn’t anyone vet these scripts ?

    • Fishy Frank

      December 26th, 2011 - 1:23am

I know, it’s incredibly bad. I’m not one of these people who are pro RTD, but Steven Moffat just has to go. He’s alright with the odd episode, but as head writer? It falls flat on its face.

    • Gordon

      December 26th, 2011 - 2:33am

@Fishy Frank:Not the best xmas special but to call it wost episode ever is a huge diservice to it. It is nowhere near as bad as twin dilema four to doomsday love and monsters end of time etc. People seem to forget the xmas special is more about entertaining the whole family than having a perfect story and it did a damm good job of it. Every xmas special there has been plotholes and regardless of who is in charge there will be holes when entertaining a family comes before telling a perfect story.

    • Commander Strax

      December 27th, 2011 - 1:36pm

In victory of the daleks, bracewell [rember hes a robot] built gravtiy bubbles so planes could fly though the vortex.

I thoght that the Doctor Who Christmas specil was good I like it when the Doctor Had the spacehelmit on the wrongway round and at the end when Amy Pond hand a waterpistel when the doctor Came round.
