Strictly and x factor are audience participation shows that require you to view at first airing so you can chat about it txt or tweet or facebook in realtime, should you be so inclined. This is why these types of shows have made a come back. Far more people are likely to watch Dr Who on iplayer or recorded or on second airing or download from iTunes, where as if you’ve missed the other shows most people probably wouldn’t go out of their way to catch up.

Dr Who is not failing as a Series, the Viewing figures are NOT in decline, they are still high as ever, with people recording the epsiodes rather than watching LIVE, I am one of the many who do this.

The viewing-figures we get are only about a third of the REAL audience who have seen the episode.

dratted reality tv shows seem to like trouncing dr.who. 6 million isnt bad though, but those show might be more appealing to the casual viewer, but who is still doing very well.

i sort of can, x factor, it’s something for the whole family to watch, not that doctor who isn’t, but x factor is not scary or sometimes complicated to a point when my mum can’t understand it, x factor can be scary when a really freaky person walks on. lol

Why not…? Those shows are huge and attract different audiences than Doctor Who. Of course they are going to appeal to more generics than Doctor Who.

Well reality shows and celeb shows always do well. They are simple “wallpaper” TV. However most people watch these shows as they are broadcast rather than record them whereas drama is something people nowdays schedule so they can sit down and enjoy it. Thats why you see such a big difference between these overnights and the final figures. I expect that when the final ratings are out that Dr Who will move ahead of Strictly.

and don’t forget, lots of people would have been tuning on to the end of strictly ready to watch doctor who!

Strictly and X Factor are automatic table toppers because of the way TV works right now. The fact Doctor Who managed 6.0 million against Red or Black (beating Red or Black) is great. Most shows would kill to be the 3rd most watched of the night when against Strictly and the X Factor. Good TV doesn’t equal good ratings sadly.

That’s true, and Dr Who is brilliant, marvellous work, in comparison to the likes of the other LIVE stuff, which attracts LIVE AUDIENCES.

-Were as Dr Who’s viewers tend not to be LIVE, but often view the latest episodes coming out on their planner, or BBC Iplayer.

That’s the reason why the viewing figures aren’t through the roof, but the figures themselves dont really account for all the VIEWERS 😉
