The episode was so-so for me. I don’t like the titles and music, the Eccleston/Tennant ones are still the best.

But my biggest complaint, not limited to this episode, is that Moffat has reduced the Sontarans to a comedy act. They now seem to exist solely to deliver a witty line when called upon and nothing else. I can remember the Pertwee/Baker era where they were brutal aliens hell bent on war and victory. RTD got them right, why can’t Moffat ?

The mannequins (robots) needed to be more menacing. left me flat. The doctor well, the jury is out and I will see how he goes. HE DOES NEED WARMTH. Also, way too much dialogue and easy explanations. 7 out of 10.

Visual titles excellent but theme tune very disappointing. Lacks the emotional power, impact and energy of previous versions.

Agree with everything you say there. They seriously need to redo the theme tune, at least by the start of series 9. The theme is an iconic signature tune, and this version just felt too slight and washed out. But the titles looked great!

New titles are awesome, just the theme is a bit of a problem for me, they should have used the one on Billy Hanshaw’s original title sequence the new one is based on.

They should have used ALL of Billy Hanshaw’s original title sequence, with maybe just slight alterations. Like maybe not using the Gallifrey symbol for example. But everything about Hanshaw’s titles is more epic and detailed.

As usual the BBC tried to cram too much into the introducing the new Dr. episode but I expect it will get better. Hated the new version of the theme tune.

I loved this show! There were some fantastic moments, I really liked the Doctor in the alley with the old man scene. The scene where Jenny tells Clara “I don’t like her, I love her” is delightful. Seeing my favorite show spotlight and normalize a lesbian relationship is so affirming. I’ve always liked Vastra and Jenny, is was great that they had so much screen time. And Strax is the bomb! Did anyone notice, or not notice, that there was Dinosaur saliva on the Tardis door from the front view and not the side view? This show doesn’t seem to miss stuff like that, so I wonder if it will be in the trivia contest on-line, or some such thing.

If you don’t like my opinions – remember, they are just that – MINE – here goes:

While the writer has originated a (very) few good storylines – stone angels for one – why on earth do we have to have gay issues pushed at us (in this case lesbianism) in what is supposed to be a family show.

I don’t care about being “pc” – Doctor Who should not be about pushing the views of any group, minority or otherwise, it should be about the story namely – SCI FI.

Since David Tennant left, the series has lost it’s way and now seems to be a group of linked special effects extravaganzas with little good sci fi behind it – a triumph of style over substance.

The action has become childish – for me, reminiscent of the playground games where kids used to run around playing “cops and robbers” – fine for kids but not for sci fi fans. There are inconsistencies and dialogue that make little sense.

Typical episode – something weird happens, lots of people run around for a while being silly, the weirdness is put right and everyone goes home happy.

Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax are absolutely my favourite minor characters since Commander Lethbridge-Stewart (and daughter). I love the fun subtext of the relationship between Madame Vastra and Jenny, and that Vastra, Jenny & Strax continue dealing with monsters whether Dr Who is there or not. It’s a limited view, to see this as pushing minority views. Why not have a go at Strax for being short, while you’re at it? Vastra and Jenny are great characters with lots of audience appeal. BTW I’ve been watching Dr Who since 1964.

I really loved the new doctor! At last we are leaving behind the “baby doctor” stuff! I still think that Tennant was the best ever, but this one has a strong potential. I just hope they change the companion as well. Amy and Clara are both too young and we need a “woman” now. I miss someone like Donna or Rose (she was young but looked like 8 or 10 years older than theese 2 teenagers). She’s a good actress but that’s not the point. I accept that people who descovers the show right now love her, but I follow the series since many years and therefore I have perspective, Clara has a child face, she can’t deliver the strength that a doctor companion should give, even less with this new powerfull doctor.

I didn’t like the interior of the TARDIS, too clean, clear, white, too “machine”, There is a lack of something more “organic” in there.

The story was a little bit childish. I hope some darker complex corners of the doctor will appears.

I really hope to see an episode between River Song and this doctor! Ages fits perfect! If this doctor is darker as I feel he is (thank God), he needs a woman with a life behind, with common sens and sens of humor. It’s a great oportunity to take back the doctor’s daughter as well. DIffetence of age it’s great to make an encounter between that bolodie daughter and this older doctor.

Hey, the age of the Doctor doesn’t matter. Matt Smith was the youngest yet and pulled off the weight of a thousand years of guilt and loss, just like William Hartnell was an old man, but good portray youthful eccentricity as well. And what’s wrong with a young woman as a companion? As long as it’s a good actress playing a well-written character, it should be just fine. In fact, Ace WAS a teenager, and she was absolutely amazing.

All in all I rather enjoyed Deep Breath. I always feel it takes a few episodes for the new Doctor to bed in, and in Peter Capaldi I think potentially we may have a very good Doctor indeed – a bit of the William Hartnell and Jon Pertwee personalities combined. Good start. I just hope Clara Oswald doesn’t leave at Christmas as there’s something about the character I really like – the best companion in the TARDIS for some time

Hated the innuendo, completely pointless. Why ? The dinosaur was a very tenious story thread,at best. After the pathetic buffooning around of Matt Smith’s Doctor, which blighted that era, and that shown in this Post Regeneration story, perhaps this sort of thing will now become a thing of the past. Peter Capaldi is a fantastic actor, I hope, as his Doctor progresses. we can continue to see some weight, gravitas and authority back into proceedings. As an episode, it wasn’t too bad. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

Deep Breath has become my favourite series opener to date.

Peter Capaldi has proven to me that he is simply a fantastic Doctor, and I’m sure he’s got lots more to show. The clockwork creatures (Im still not 100%, were they the Clockwork Droids from the 10th Doctor era? I’m sure they were) were great and scary as well too. Loved the newspaper scene with Clara and Strax 10/10

I love, love, love Mr Capaldi. We’re back to the more “mature” and crabby Doctor of my youth and he’s fabulous anyway. I thought the episode was silly though and a bit disappointing but there were flashes of brilliance. It may be I was a little too excited about the first episode so had set myself up for disappointment. True fans will stick with it. Well done Mr C

I really liked this ep. When they said this was gonna be a dark doctor they meant it. Deep breath was also like f the girl in the fireplace because of the robots taking people organs and stuff (they even make a HOT AIR BALOON OUT OF SKIN) doctor who has become more adult and it is looking good. This ep was fantastic to see in cinemas. But there was a plot hole. At the end of girl in the fireplace the doctor doesn’t know the name of the ship however in this ep he knows that it is called as Madame de pompadore (think that is how you spell it) anyways fantastic ep. Ps the intro was completely weird

The Doctor’s killed before as with the Sycorax leader and on a much bigger scale if he thought it was for the greater good. The killing of Daleks alone even if given no other choice (because of their nature) would be in the billions and he did wipe out his own people originally before “The Moment” helped point to an alternative.

    I Loved this ep!
    Amazing start to Capaldi’s tenure!!!

    Breakdown:

    Title sequence and theme:
Brilliant! I see I’m alone in thinking this, but I don’t care –
The theme finally got back the original 1963 bassline with a nice twist, unlike the barely recognisable Matt Smith theme
And the title sequence was fresh and original, compared to endless versions of the time vortex that went before

      Story:
Well written all round, and with a slower, less crammed, yet still exciting pace – much more like the classic series
A nice transision from 11 slapstick to a new, much darker tone (which is great)

No, no, no, no…….as much as I wanted to like Capaldi he was just awful. His acting was terrible as though he was trying too hard to be liked. Matt Smith is the best doctor and Moffatt needs to persuade him to come back or the show is going down the drain. Gutted.

I’m not overly keen on the new title sequence or title music… I hope that over time it will grow on me. I think it’s far TOO different to Matt’s last title sequence, and although I know that it’s all about change and moving forward, I feel like they hit the nail on the head with the last one… it was the best titles and music of the 21st century series by a long shot 🙂

but yes, the show itself was OUTSTANDING. Just pure brilliance!! As I read Steven Moffat say in DWM, I did notice the little hark backs to ‘Robot’ which I liked and the little bit at the end which was like 9 and Rose talking about chips, loved it. The pace was different as well, obviously down to the longer length of the episode, much more drawn out which I loved and it had time for each character to breathe and expand on their feelings on this ‘new doctor’.

Absolutely brilliant! What an outstanding start to Capaldi’s era, He kept the Scottish accent, he was hilarious and so many Easter egg’s. It was absolute brilliant to see a small part that included Matt. I thought it was outstanding.. So much complexity in time travel, there’s a plethora of things that you can do in that show. for a 56 year old man, he’s very energetic. Can’t wait for Episode 2 Into The Dalek!

Why didn’t the Beeb keep the original concept intro by Billy Hanshaw, far superior to the messed around version. Ditch it & run with original, you’ve got time before next week.
