So many posters seem to think that Dr Who is based on reality. It’s just fiction folks and it’s coming from the mind of a man who makes it up as he goes along to suit a particular story. He doesn’t think of the past, present or future of the show and the implications of Dr Who mythology he ruins. So forget about Me, Clara.. . whether they can or can’t fly the Tardis. It’s all irrelevant. He constantly makes the Doctor do things out of character. He doesn’t care and why should you? Forget the last six series. His stuff fitted in at the time but its nonsense when you relate it to anything else. Moffat’s dug so many holes for himself that he cant get out of and its really not worth discussing it. We’re soon going start anew. Perhaps Chibnail will lovingly craft DW as writers of the Classic series did.

Doctor who is pretty much a part of their lives. The room I type this in has many 100’s of Doctor Who figures and various other pieces of merchandise. It can sometimes be very difficult not to take stories like this on as insults.

Series nine was dark, intense and exciting; it started superbly and maintained itself throughout… I am massively impressed with the storyline and the ultimate cliffhanger on which it was left…. Roll on series ten!!!

Hell Bent was nothing like I was expecting, I was really excited to watch this episode when I saw the trailer and unfortunately it was not great. In the episode Heaven Sent it looked very painful trying to smash through a wall of Diamond. Even though this wasn’t the best of episodes it still was quite amazing seeing Gallifrey again and seeing where The Doctor grew up. We all know The Doctor dosn’t like to be violent so I was surprised when The Doctor shot The General in his chest and caused him to Regenarate and the most surprising thing was that The General Regenarates into a woman. It is kinda sweet that that The Doctor done all of that for Clara and in the end she ends up reversing the palarity in the memory eraser and The Doctor’s memory is wiped. Then on top of that Clara stole a TARDIS. Not cool.

    Sincerely,

Think this series of Dr Who has been the worse yet. The writers are now trying to make the stories so clever and thought provoking that they are forgetting about the basics, i.e someone needs help, doctor turns up, encounters baddie, defeats baddie. The Doctor now spends far too much time on deep thought provoking conversations either with himself or with a baddie. Whether the stories are two parters or not is not an issue, nor is the quality of the acting, Capaldi is a good actor, its the stories that have got worse. Great Dr Who stories are those that could be enjoyed by everyone no matter what their age. The recent series episodes are sometimes so confusing that they require watching several times to fully understand. I would also say that the Doctor being trapped for 4 billion years was pure stupid. Also during the last couple of series, it seems that the Doctor invited every Tom, Dick and Harry onto the TARDIS making it busier than a MacDonalds Restaurtant. And having the Doctor strumming guitars on the Tardis just didnt work, it felt and looked stupid.

You seem to have a very narrow view about what Doctor Who should be. Surely the very reason for it’s longevity is its capacity to continually reinvent itself – to make us think, confound our expectations. And why do you assume that children can’t follow or enjoy complex story lines?

Now I’ve seen all of Dr Who for 1215 I have to say that two-part serials work. We’ve had more story and character development and more interesting concepts than in a while. We’ve also had less reliance on gimmickry and arbitrary emotional button-pushing.

I’ve enjoyed everything except for the one-part stories. Having said that, I’m not a fan of ‘found footage’ and I also find the Christmas episode concept a very restrictive one, so maybe that distorts my impressions.

Overall this season gets my approval. My one big qualm? The Doctor has to have more adventures on alien worlds, rather than just make passing jokes with his companion about it. I’d not spend as much time on Earth as the Doctor does, even if I was half-human! 😛

a few questions here,is the doctor now over 4 1/2 billion years old now?which is ridiculous why couldn’t he have just taken a couple of hundred years to reach gallifrey which would have been a better story.
if it took him so long and such a difficult task how could the sisterhood just turn up just like that?
why was the brilliant actor [timothy Dalton] replaced with such a poor replacement?
wouldn’t the general have regenerated sooner than after 4 1/2 million years?
if clara can now travel in time and space, the same as river song it means they could pick a time and place to meet any doctor they like

It was 4 1/2 billion years so it would be a more dramatic scene when Clara found out how long the doctor waited and to show he would do ANYTHING for her. If it was only 200 years it wouldn’t send the message over very well. The sisterhood of kaan are immortals, that’s why they can show up. It wasn’t a poor replacement, Rassilon just didn’t have a major role compared to his role in the end of time. Gallifrey is also in one moment at the end of time, the isn’t many threats that could cause the general to regenerate. And Clara will most likely try to avoid the doctor because she thinks the hybrid Is her and the doctor combined, and she also knows the hybrid is dangerous and would want to stop it from being created.

Correct me if I’m wrong anyone but I think his biological age is more or less the same as it was a couple of episodes ago because his body was periodically recreated from the pattern buffer in HS. However he did experience 4.5×10^9 years subjectively, presuming his memory was not reset each time. I think he said he remembered it all so I guess not.

Yes Gianna she is returning to Galifrey but the long way around, how long, who knows. I can’t see Ashildr/Me being in any hurry to give up the use of a Tardis, which she would lose as soon as they returned to Galifrey.
Anyway Moffatt would bring both of them back with their Tardis if a suitable story come along and both Actresses where available. Moffatt would not be afraid to have Claras heart beating again if it suited the storyline. Or the Doctor suddenly remember Clara.

I have sincerely loved the new reboot – that is until Peter Capaldi came along. I have watched Dr Who all of my life since William Hartnell’s time. Yes, Matt Smith was always going to be a very hard act to follow but Peter is neither convincing nor suitable for the role in my estimation. Plus, to be honest, both the writing and continuity have gone downhill fast this series. It reminds me a lot of the quality during the 1980s when appointing Peter Davidson was also a huge mistake and by the end of the decade the show had become a shadow of itself and was ultimately axed…
Please, please therefore don’t let Peter Capaldi be the last incarnation this time round just because perhaps the BBC is too shy to admit it has lost a lot of it’s sparkle! Act now and appoint someone with real charisma again and no, it does not have to be a woman nor of another ethnicity just to please the PC brigade!

Steven Moffat has written some brilliant stories. But I still consider the majority of his best was during the Eccleston and Tennant era’s, when Russell T Davies was head writer. Because Moffat had to complete his convoluted story in one or two episodes, which I can tolerate. But not over an entire series like these days! I do believe Russell T Davies knew how to keep the right balance for the fan base and the general viewer. But Moffat seems to struggle somewhat balancing the two. It now seems like a series going into itself, much as at did in the 1980’s…and look what eventually happened then. Moffat cannot seem to write a simple structured story with a beginning, middle and end. He put’s those three in any order he want’s, indeed, he jumps back and forth through all three. May I also add, if Moffat want’s a character to come back…then DON’T kill them off. Simples…Yet Moffat doesn’t do simples anymore. Stories such as ‘Blink’ and ‘The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances’ are among the all time greats…WHY?…Because Moffat has to complete those stories in one, plus he wasn’t head writer then. I’d like a new head writer now, but I’d still like Steven Moffat to contribute, as containing his stories again in one or two episodes will be him at his finest.

It needs better writers that’s all in my view.

  • Keeping the story straight is hard

    December 9th, 2015 - 4:15pm

Dr who needs someone on the team to keep their stories straight. The dr in “utopia” episode finds the master hiding as professor Yana at the heat death of the universe.(basically the end of the universe/time) That episode stated the date was the year 100 trillion, and approximates our current view when the universe would die if “heat death”. (Great episode) Now “Hell Bent” is highly flawed when it suggests that the time lords are hiding at the edge of the end of time. The time frame suggested for the location of Gallifre is 4.5 billion yrs after our current time of 13.6 billion yrs. So 13.6b + 4.5b = 18.1b which is equal to the “utopia” episodes 100t!!! (Not even close) and if you wish to argue the starting point I picked of 13.6b because that date wasn’t explicitly stated in the episode “Hell bent”, the writer of “Hell bent” helps us define the further when one of the characters says “Clara has been dead for half the existence of the universe”. So again using that statement, the time of 4.5b years in the confession dial, the entire time Clara has been dead, double it to get the “whole” existence of the universe and you come out with 9 billion years. How the hell are suppose to take the story telling of this episode and fit it into dr who cannon when the writers can’t do math? 9billion does not equal 100 trillion and the universe has already existed longer than that right now. I know Moffet likes to mess with time lord conventions but the dates in this episode are clearly a typo and I am astounded no one caught it! Not even the viewers or commenters. This episode was intriguing, but the glaring time mistake within the reboots own time frame setup by the same authors puts this episode right in the trash.

That was kind of confusing to read but you have to remember the time lords weren’t at the very end of time. They were at the end of the universe but the doctor then had to travel forward in time to get to the very end of the universe. That end of the time was when everything (but me) was dead. The timelord hiding was probably when everything was starting to die and nothing was left in the universe. I couldn’t tell if you added the distance from gallifrey to the end of time too your equation.

One of the most perfectly shot scenes in Doctor Who history! The gun-ship looked so real and Peter absolutely nails the clint Eastwood-esque Doctor! Okay. Now I know Im well into my 60s now and maybe there are signs of dementia creeping in but as someone who has seen every episode of Doctor Who in its entire span, and who has been an avid collector of Who merchandise since it began etc etc, can someone please tell me, what on earth was that.

Whilst being far from the worst episode of (for better words) Nu Who, was it me, but that seemed to contradict alot of what had gone before. Where did it fit with The Five Doctors that delved into the legend of Rassilon? There were also so many plot holes and contradictions, which others have put far better than I could on here, that I wont go into them. He cant help himself can he. Old Moffat. Clara again? This time flying a TARDIS!? Time to go old chap.

Also hes certainly preparing the ground for a black Doctor / female Doctor / black female Doctor etc. Now I dont actually have any problems with this, as long as the casting is right (Michelle Gomez was terrific casting though not given enough screen time with the Doctor) and not rushed for pcs sake. Though I am a little disappointed that they felt the need to make the Time Lords hermaphrodite in the first place.

I agree, it’s time for Steven Moffat to go. His been in charge for half a decade now, and I think that’s long enough.

Interesting thou that Clara really seems dead important to Steven Moffat, and it may just be me, but I keep getting this thought in my mind telling me Steven Moffat fancied Jenna-Louise Coleman that he wanted to give her more screen time, even make her character seem at times more important the Doctor weather being played by Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi, but that’s just me.

No doubt you recall in ‘The End of Time’ that it seems Rassilon was brought out of the Dark Tower [thou unseen] in order to lead his people during the end of the Time War.

And yes, a lot of us don’t understand how Clara is able to operate that new Tardis, especially since it’s controls are different to the ones in the Doctor’s Tardis. She seems to understand most of the controls in the Doctor’s Tardis, but with the console being identical to the 1963 original in the other one, surely should should not know what controls to use to fly that Tardis let alone land it.

I suppose there’s only so much you can do in 65 minutes. However, stories such as The War Games, The Deadly Assassin, The Five Doctors, The Trial of a Time Lord and those inbetween kind of give us a good insight to their duplicitous, self indulgent and sterile character. Basically they are not as benign as they like to think and take the “Lords” part of their title quite literally, having the Doctor do their bidding at various point in his life are a sure sign of a dominant species despite their somewhat proud boast in Genesis of the Daleks : “We pride ourselves we seldom interfere with the affairs of others”. You can assume from that grand statement that they are only too willing to do so if they choose to and if it becomes a threat to themselves.

  • The Moffat Paradox

    December 8th, 2015 - 12:58am

There’s something that’s been niggling me about the Doctor banishing Rassilon and blaming him for the Time War.

Whatever transgressions Rassilon may have committed and been capable of as in TEOT (which may or may not have been erased by events in DOTD) in the course of which then caused the War Doctor to originally use The Moment, Rassilon and the Time Lords didn’t start the Time War’; didn’t the Daleks do that ?

Although it could be argued that when the Daleks first learned exactly what the Doctor was and how he had been used by the Time Lords against them to affect their development and thwart their plans that could be seen as the Time Lords firing the first shot(s) despite being officially neutral in the affairs of the universe.

The Daleks were inevitably going to be particularly peeved about that regardless of other considerations and go for Gallifrey itself; especially if being victorious would also make them potentially masters of time if they could unlock the key elements of Gallifreyan technology.

In Genesis Of The Daleks the Time Lords felt they had to intervene or the Daleks could otherwise achieve their objectives and the Daleks from their encounters with the Doctor were always going to conclude that the biggest obstacle to their realisation was the Time Lords.

So war as in OPEN warfare was surely inevitable.

(Surely a massively, massively stupid thing for the Doctor to even tell Davros in the Magicians Apprentice Gallifrey has been “saved”?)

Rassilon if he had succeeded and the War Doctor originally in using The Moment may have caused the Time War to end badly for the universe/ Gallifrey before events in DOTD changed everything but as far as open warfare was concerned did the Time Lords (any Time Lords) really start it?

And even if they did for the sake of the universe wasn’t it a war that had to be fought even if it got out of hand?

Yes it is all a bit confusing about the manual, we can only surmise that for some reason that particular TARDIS is translating the language, even so River did say at one poing in “A Good Man Goes to War” about the the Doctor’s crib that it doesn’t translate (though I think I’ve got muddled with that somewhere). However, it doesn’t alter the fact of how “Me” got to Gallifrey or understand how to operate a TARDIS when we have been told that it usually takes six peoples to pilot one. I think it should be explained somewhat to clear things up.

If the Doctor can’t remember Clara does this mean he loses all memory of the last couple of series’. The zygon episode in particular he will forget that Clara got turned into a zygon and so who did he argue with to re establish the cease fire? Who does he think jumped into his time stream? Will he remember Oswin or Victorian Clara? Who saved him from the giant sun in rings of Akaten? I feel this arrangement throws up so many different problems. The doctor can’t just lose a chunk of his memory because then that makes it impossible for him to remember why he has made certain decisions in his life. For example why did he save gallifrey if he cant remember Clara being there to persuade him. There’s something really irritating about that resolution for me

The ONLY thing I would point to being ‘wrong’ with the past few series is Moffat’s inclination to (unintentionally?) aim storylines above the average child’s head. It’s a family show for children & adults alike. It’s not for ‘knowing’ sci-fi nerds. Remember who the core audience is. Yes, the little nods and in-jokes are magnificent and I love them, but the future of the series is the kids. If they don’t follow it, the show is gone. Some of the stories, while the dialogue is worthy and thought-provoking, I’ve been thinking ‘Shut up. Run. Explosions. Monsters going ‘Rrrragggghhh!!!’. THAT’S what kids want and that’s what they should be playing in the schoolyard. They shouldn’t be trying to re-enact some angst-ridden scene where Clara’s trying to save the Doc’s soul (again) through meaningful dialogue and the sharing of feelings. In my day I had Zarbis and Daleks. You could get some good punches in playing Zarbis and Daleks.
I suspect the next series will be Moffat’s last. He’s done wonders and I hope he’ll throw in the occasional script but maybe it’s time for someone else to step up.

It is not a children’s show. It has not been a children’s show since the late sixties. Doctor Who is not solely made for children, and if you have entire seasons/series with episodes like “Fear Her”, you are going to lose a lot more members of the audience. Intellectual episodes are what make Doctor Who popular and worth wacthing, and treat everyone (young and old) like they have a brain. See: “The Girl in the Fireplace”, “Blink”, “Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead”, “Midnight”, “Turn Left”, “The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang”, “The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon”, “The Day of the Doctor”, “Listen”, “Time Heist”, “Dark Water/Death in Heaven”, and virtually all of series 9 (except for “The Girl who Died” and “The Woman Who Lived”). Yes, I am a Moffat fan.

I agree with you Andy. The writers are now trying to make the stories so clever and thought provoking that they are forgetting about the basics, i.e someone needs help, doctor turns up, encounters baddie, defeats baddie. The stories now spends far too much time on the Doctor having thought provoking conversations either with himself or long drawn out conversations with the baddie. Oh how i wish we had a few more stories like Blink, The girl in the fireplace etc. Those stories had a Start, Middle and an End. Great stories that could be enjoyed by everyone no matter what their age. The recent series episodes are sometimes so confusing that they require watching several times to fully understand. I would also say that the Doctor being trapped for 4 billion years was pure stupid.

    Ok so I’m confused.

Who is the Hybrid, is it the Dr, Ashyldr/Me, Clara, Missy?
Why did the doctor use a gun and shoot the war general?
How did the sisters of Karn find Gallifrey and get there so easily?
Where the hell is Missy and what was her ‘idea’ when she was captured by the Daleks?
Is the Doctor now the Lord high president of Gallifrey?

My head was spinning after watching that, I did love seeing the doctor inside another Tardis with that fantastic the classic Tardis console room. Shame that Clara and Ashyldr are off flying about in it. I just hope they bump into Missy and she steals it from them.

As for the new sonic, far too many flashing lights in my opinion.

Turns out, the Hybrid was just a load of old nonsense.

The Doctor just shot the War General just to buy him and Clara some time to escape, but knew the War General would regenerate and live anyhow.

Regarding the Sister Hood of Karn question, I’m unsure.

Missy perhaps escaped again from the Daleks the same way she and Clara had in ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’. Either that or she pointed up at the ceiling making the Daleks look up and then run like hell to a Dalek ship and run away as fast as hell away from Skaro that way while they was too busying asking themselves “why has she pointed at the ceiling for ?” 😀

The Doctor was once again briefly their Lord President, but since it’s a position he never wants, it’s obviously been given to someone else.

As far as the Sisterhood is concerned, Karn is in the same star system as Gallifrey!

I would’ve at least put Peter Capaldi in the time lord presidential robes just for that one scene, he would’ve looked amazing. Huge action figure sales potential missed there!

Missy could not escape the vortex manipulator had burn out, however I theorise a team up between Dalek and Master.

Although I loved the appearance of the “old” control room I assume it was meant to be another TARDIS, so why did the Time Lords stick to such an antiquated design ? They’ve certainly been stuck in the doldrums for 4.5 billion years, not like they’ve anything else to do, save take up knitting. I realise budget restraints of the show but the outlandish part of me wanted to see a stunning new design of technology from a race as old as they are. For heavens sake there was even mention of not being able to fix the chameleon circuit on it. A race that has conquered time itself and they can’t even “change a plug” so to speak.

Apparently, the TARDIS defaults to original
1963 desktop when not in use. When Me
and Clara master the manual, they can
Customize the ships desktop any way they
      want.

Anyone get a vibe of Quantum Leap with the diner at the end Maybe an homage to that series finals. I’m such a mush just thinking about makes me cry. So , this episode of Dr Who had a big emotional impact on me great job i guess i guess waiting 4.5 billion year make you banished someone too that was totally unexpected for the doctor anyway.

What are you on about Jenna being in the next season? Unless your being sarcastic she is playing Queen Victoria in a completely seperate drama on ITV

We’ve been told Coleman was leaving before and it turned out not to be true. The other immortals (I thought there was only one other) had gone by just before the end of time (so not immortal?) Nothing to stop them turning up elsewhere on the time line.

Spandy – regarding the guy from the woman who lived, the Doctor did say the Mire medikit might not work in the same way. Possibly because he was older when he was resurrected. The base information in cells degrades as a person gets older, which is why we age, so maybe the medikit thing had less to work with.

DD she hasn’t signed up to do another show before, she is playing a young Victoria in a period drama. And the final scenes had goodbye but maybe a cameo appearance written all over it.
Jenna has now been on the show for 3 seasons, a pretty long run for a modern companion, I’m pretty sure she is gone this time.
Anyway i have enjoyed Jenna but like ever character in Dr Who her time has come.

Completely disappointed at this last episode. What a shameful use of Gallifrey, it started very well and then went down quickly. Let’s forget all the time the doctor have been looking for Gallifrey. He arrives, with no questions, no intrigue. And first order of the day, banish Rassilon the first of time lords. They just made the mighty and feared Time Lords feel so banal and uninteresting.
The doctor shooting someone? I could not believe my eyes. Even if he knew said person would regenerate.

Not to mention the Hybrid plot that seemed to have been forgotten and rushed at the last second.

If they wanted to create a glorified goodbye to Clara why waste the return of Gallifrey to the screen? So many ways it could have been done more effectively.

Although I was disappointed in general. I greatly enjoyed the return of the sonic screwdriver and old TARDIS. And although I disapprove of the direction they took with the episode it was an OK one in the end, but not good enough for a season finale.

P.S. – And I really hope they forget they ever set Clara and Me inside a TARDIS and sent them into the unknown. Apparently the doctor have been lying all along in the time he spent to learn how to fly a TARDIS, or this is the iTARDIS, fool proof TARDIS for people who can’t really drive but want to travel in time.

Sight of the old console was great, however you’d think after 4.5 billion years the Time Lords would have come up with a new high tech design; not even be able to fix the chameleon circuit on this one is silly.

They dont need them anymore as they devleloped in the classic series the ability to teleport more exactly back and forth throughout time and space through the vortex.

Tardises are quaint used by maveriks like the Doctor/Master.

I don’t think their is anything wrong with the chameleon circuits just the girls haven’t worked out how it works, and the Doctor would not have been able to show Clara how it works on his Tardis.

@CardiffRa: If you look at a lot of the Gallifrey based stories from the classic series, the time lords do come across as a bit beige and banal. The “running joke” about the time lords was that they were a supposedly mighty and powerful race that had been around for millions of years that just sat around on those comfy sofas that used to adorn the corridors of the Capitol in the 1980s and do very little.

But..given their post time war position…you would expect a little more bite in Hell Bent..!

Me did mention that she mastered a lot of skills in an earlier episode, so maybe she managed to learn how to fly the TARDIS?
