It’s not the Sound of Drums knock so i doubt it will be the Master in the vault.

With the knocks from in the vault at the end…
If they’re still going with the Master “He Will Knock Four Times” thing, I hope we’ll finally get an explanation for why that woman at the end of ‘Planet of the Dead’ knew about that whole thing…

The fact we already know that John Simm is returning as the Master, it would seem absolutely pointless for him to be in the Vault. I mean, why make this the overriding story arc, and the main mystery of the series, and then it turns out to be John Simm’s Master inside. Makes a complete joke of the main story arc. Plus a waste of Moffat’s time creating it…if we already know in the end of the first episode trailer that it’s John Simm’s Master likely to be in the vault. Frankly, if it is I will be seriously disappointed and dismayed

She was psychic, thats how she knew. Its part of the story.

    • The Living Shadow

      May 2nd, 2017 - 4:44pm

Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s Simm in there.
The woman being physic was not part of the story one bit, and was objectively out of place in a story like ‘Planet of the Dead’, an episode with human characters from Earth. It was clearly something Russell T Davies threw onto the end of the episode. Please tell me how her being physic was in any way incorporated into the story… Who exactly was that woman? From a screenwriting perspective, surely we need to know more about her and her abilities, as I’m pretty sure there have never been any other random humans with psychic abilities in the Doctor Who Universe.
It’s never been established that other human characters form Earth have this ability, so it shouldn’t just seem normal to the Doctor, and the audience too (Us). Isn’t the Doctor curious about her powers? Right from the start, he’s always had quite a scientific viewpoint, and has always been curious about humans with otherworldly abilities. Or anything otherworldly appearing on Earth, for that matter.
For me that moment really breaks the fourth wall. It was so clear that the woman had only been given physic abilities so that she could give some exposition about a future event. You might as well have had Russell T Davies himself come onscreen and tell the Doctor “Oh yeah, the Master might be coming back..”, and then stare right at the camera and wink at us.
They could have so easily thought up an excuse like ‘she’s been possessed by the Ood’ for example, as at least then it’s already been established that the Ood are beings with physic powers, so it wouldn’t seem as out of place.

There have been many “Random” human psychics in Doctor Who, Herbert Clegg in Planet of the Spiders and Emma in Hide being two Who spring to my mind in the instant. Read the article in DWM 509 for more examples.
Carmen’s psychic powers in Planet of the Dead were a fairly major plot point in the episode, with her able to hear the dead people of San Helios who had been reduced to sand by the stingrays.

    • The Living Shadow

      May 2nd, 2017 - 8:39pm

I’d forgotten about Herbert Clegg as it’s been a long time since I’ve seen Planey of the Spiders. At least in that case I believe we learn about how his abilities developing on him, and we see that his powers are flawed, not innate. All which the Doctor was very intrigued about, and even let us know (through telling the Brigadier) that the idea is not impossible, which added something to the universe in which Doctor Who takes place.

I’ve rewatched parts of Planet of the Dead (which perhaps I should have done before originally commenting), and that part still seems out of place to me. Carmen has low-key phsyic energy within her, which was enhanced by the three suns of San Helios. This doesn’t explain why she can see prophecies about the Master when she’s back on Earth at night. In my opinion, we just don’t seem to learn enough about her and her physic abilities and to me, it seemed like she was only physic so that certain plot points could be easier to get to, or tease future events, and not to actually add something interesting into the Doctor Who universe. It just seems like we’re meant to say: “well she’s physic so it must make sense” but I think we deserve more of an explanation for her abilities and how Carmen and these abilities integrate into the Doctor Who universe.

I’m not going to lie, I hardly remember anything about Hide, so I will have to give that a rewatch, but from what I remember Emma had a physic connection to Hila (no silly prophecies), which was because they were decendants and Hila had affected time, as she was a time traveller. This presents less problems as it gives reasons, as well as presents limits for these ‘phsyic’ abilities.

She didn’t specifically mention the master only that ‘he’ will knock four times and anyway the ‘he’ was wilf and so is a separate thing we were led to believe the four times would be about the master but it wasn’t. So really she didn’t have any visions of the master only Wilf.

There is actually quite a nice character arc in this for the Doctor.

In The Beast Below, the Doctor is prepared to kill a creature because he believes that letting it live may destroy a large population of human beings. His new, human companion Amy proves that he is wrong by setting the creature free herself and it turns out to be entirely benevolent.

Here, and in Kill The Moon, he is faced with a very similar decision, but now he lets his human companion decide, trusting that they will always be right and knowing that it is more of their right than his – before he believed that he had the right because he was older and wiser, but now he knows that he is no wiser in this matter, and as an outsider should not be given the final decision.

I have to say this series is already better than 8/9 for me. However this is still just a good, not great series. But its good to see a fresh outlook on The 12th Doctor. Bill is brilliant though.

Who or whatever is behind those closed vault doors must truly be dangerous in the Whoniverse, as Nardole was speaking to it as though he was both frightened and angry at it attempting to escape.

The 4 knocks at the end indeed could be a red herring to through viewers off, and it may turn out not to be the Master (John Simm). And seeing as how Nardole is in The Eaters of Light, its just before the finale, the trio might travel from 2nd Century back to 2017 and find out that the prisoner has escaped.

To which we get a cliffhanger leading us into World Enough and Time as Missy, the Cybermenand the Master start their plans.

Just a little theory i thought of.

Better than last weeks episode, did we find out what the monster poo fuel bricks were being used for? All we got was ‘there’re taken to the steel mill’, I’m wondering if the ‘mill’ is making cybermen and we’ll find out later?

I’m loving the relationship between 12 and Bill, it works so much better than 12 and Clara.

I’m guessing that Mondas is inside the vault, if it’s time lord technology than it’ll be bigger on the inside enough to lock away a whole planet.

Being used as an alternative to coal, to power machinery and things. Good thing the Doctor succeeded, “Monster poo brick Hill School” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it…

It was being used as a subsitute for coal as it burns quicker and hotter. I’m assuming he’d just got a load of businesses on the go and he was using that substitute to produce a bigger output thus larger profits for himself

That’s exactly what I thought! I just wouldn’t be Moffat if he didn’t acknowledge the Valyard on screen. When I heard that Kris Marshall had ‘apparantly’ started filming, I thought he had been cast as Valyard.

And anyway, wouldn’t everyone like to keep their dark side in a vault! Locked away, so no one can ever see it. With Nardoles safe hands!

Maybe the vault is an alternative to the big bbc live’ new doctor’ reveal which some people are already speculating. It would be different.

    • Tim M

      April 30th, 2017 - 1:52pm

I much prefer this simpler ‘story arc’. What’s inside the Vault. Very much like series 1 and ‘Bad Wolf’. It doesn’t over complicate a series, and leaves stories to still stand on their own merits, whilst at the same time leaving a tantalising mystery in the background.

    • the ergon

      April 30th, 2017 - 3:27pm

I prefer this more straightforward approach, they work better as standalones for viewers who don,t watch regulary. I would however much prefer six two parters for the cliffhangers.

    • A

      May 5th, 2017 - 7:57pm

For me, no to six two parters. The cliffhanger can feel very forced. Linked, like one, two & three of this series, is fine. As for the vault, I was also wondering about the Valeyard. In theory, this should have been Matt Smith’s Doctor & I wondered if this was why he was, to a certain extent, a childish personality. The 10th Doctor was heading towards the Valeyard & as the 11th was actually the 13th(aka the Valeyard) it made sense for whatever subconscious process the Doctor has to move away from this personality. But, Doctor 12’s regeneration will be to the 13th regeneration he himself accepts as the Doctor & maybe his oath is to keep the Valeyard locked up until a) the trial & b)the Valeyard’s regeneration into the 14th Doctor(the next one we see on the title credits). Maybe we have a double regeneration.

    • A

      May 5th, 2017 - 8:20pm

Not that I want to see even one regeneration but PC has chosen to go & I am gutted. Hopefully the story will be epic & the replacement will be, at least, watchable.

I love the 12th Doctor and still feel he has been delt with poor to average stories with very few gems here and there.
This series so far has yet to change that pattern as far as solid stories go.
All 3 are some what return to ideas we have seen time and time again.
Having said that what is a huge leap forward for this incarnation of the Doctor is the relationship and character work between him and his companion Bill.
After viewing the teaser introducing Bill to fans,I feard I was going to be annoyed by her character. Im so pleased to of had a complete 180 on that assumption. Pearl Mackie and the writers surporting her charcter has made Bill the best thing to happen to this Doctor in Capaldi’s run so far. If this continues I will be very sad to see their partnership end come christmas.

Good grief! Can’t even watch a bit of sci-fi without being beaten over the head with SJW nonsense at every turn. Please tell us again how white people are all terrible, especially the males, and feel free to use violence against one of them to make your point.

By the way, who’s pumping the air?

And “melanin”, what melanin? Oh, you mean the melanin that dark-skinned people have and you obviously don’t possess much of, Bill, to make slavery an immediate threat to your safety. Apart from rich white men, obviously, that can guess your genealogy just by looking at you. Oops!

There’s still no-one pumping the air.

Hey, Mr fish-pie seller, did you not learn how to run away properly when you were in school? My mistake, that was some “plot-convenience” running away. It’s very easy to confuse the two, apparently.

There are enough films around that show the pumping. How do they miss that?

The universe really does become a smaller place with every episode I’ve watched of this lately. Never mind. Another episode, on Earth again, to nitpick next week.

I feel the bbc have a duty to cast more diversally but its done with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Maybe in 1812 bill would feel the need to Question the doctor about the colour of her skin, Martha did the same in the Shakespeare code but it made a mockery of this and seemed she had nothing to worry about as in just about every shot in the background, most of the locals were black anyway. Its a shame that black actors have to be cast like this as it just seems like cynical boxticking.

I really liked this episode, the cgi isn’t going to win any awards but I liked the character development, usually in moffats era the character development domiantes the episode and the episode wraps up too quickly and it all feels a bit rushed but for the past three weeks it’s worked with a great balance between character development and plot. I loved the children as well and the references to racism i think that was important for the episode to highlight especially at the moment. All in all I think that was my favorite this series

I really just watch this for the sci-fi, for the escapism.
If they want to put in their “references to racism”, then at least integrate it better into the actual story and not use it for unsubtle virtue signalling. As someone whose ethnic origin is that of a Black African, I find it all a bit cringe worthy and I do feel slightly sorry for white people that have to put up with it.

Now let’s see that queue of the easily offended line up to call me an uncle tom or aunt jemima or whatever the term is these days.

Offended? Not at all. I’m just slightly confused by your comment actually. As stated near the start, racism was quite a problem in 1814 and, in my eyes, the script reflected that. Doctor Who does have a history with dealing with issues like that in its stories and I don’t see why it should stop now.

    • Doctor Stu

      April 30th, 2017 - 12:29pm

I welcome it, everybody knows that world is not all white and programs have a duty to reflect that and appeal to every type of person. The Doctor and Bill visit a time where slavery is still a thing and so it had to be referenced due to Bill being black. I think it was important they had that as it allowed us to see the more human side to a Bill and how far we’ve come since the 1800’s. It’s good to remind people that things weren’t so fine and dandy in the past and ignoring it would be an insult.

    • Pats86

      April 30th, 2017 - 2:39pm

Doctor Stu, I agree people do need reminding of the awful history regarding racism and slavery. Things have improved somewhat but in the current climate it is coming back, not necessarily all a black issue but also ethnic groups. It’s a frightening world and if a show like Doctor Who can help anyone, young or old to see that it is wrong to be racist then I for one applaud it.
I am not black and I would live to see a black Doctor, Idris Elba would be my choice for Capaldi’s replacement.

I am so tired of people belly aching about being black and all that happened to them. Have you all forgotten what happened to the American Indian? Or the Jews? I don’t hear a word about them and what they have gone through.
Honestly, I wish everyone would give the racism card a break!

    • A

      May 5th, 2017 - 7:14pm

      C. D. Langley. Racism is a very important issue, as are all forms of discrimination. I agree that sometimes it can be very hypocritical however. I remember a train journey in my youth when a young black man, stoned by his own admission, was loudly expressing his view that white people were afraid of black people because of the awful history of slavery. At the appropriate time, my father told my sister & I that the next stop was ours and this supposedly anti racist person immediately began to call my father Paddy…
I do not have a problem with the “political” message in this episode. It would have been stranger, especially with Bill’s enquiring mind, if it had not been addressed. Although… I would like to know one thing. Why does the past require a change of clothes but the future doesn’t?

Oh, and “he will knock 4 times” referred to Wilfred mott not the master anyway

3 lots of 3 knocks at first and then 2 lots of 4 knocks afterwards. That’s what I heard.

Doesn’t mean it’s the Master though.

Alright, alright, i was only stating my opinion. And Whorules, the Master had the 4 knock sound in his head, not Wilf.

I don’t it will be the Master, its too obvious in my opinion. Whatever it is the reveal will be interesting…

I know the master had the sound in his head, but the prophecy of the doctor’s death as in he will knock 4 times referred to Wilf in the radiation booth and not the master, oh and by the way it probably is the master in there.

“Human progress isn’t measured by industry. It’s measured by the value you place on a life. An unimportant life. A life without privilege. The boy who died on the river, that boy’s value is your value. That’s what defines an age. That’s…what defines a species.”

Words to live by. Speeches like that are part of the reason I love Doctor Who.
