I’m asking you this because this includes the master so will you update The Master guide eventually and add an episode guide like in The Cybermen & Dalek guides booboo?

I asked and boo boo said they try but they have a lot of work. Also this isn’t the best place because it is an old article so it’s less likely to be checked now.

Very dramatic, it wasn’t perfect but with the limited run time I feel like this episode was the best it could have been.

Right. I’ve watched it twice and I’m ready to give my opinion.

First, I’ll list the things I didn’t like about it. For starters, I thought the Masters didn’t have a large enough impact on the main plot. After John Simm’s big (spoilt) reveal in episode 11 I assumed the Masters would play a bigger part in episode 12 but they were more of a subplot after the scene in the city at the bottom. Also, while it was better written than Clara’s departure in Hell Bent and I’m glad Bill survived, Heather’s return was still a bit too deus ex machina for my liking.

I also thought they spent a little too much time explaining Bill’s condition to the viewers. It was an interesting idea but it did make the plot drag a little at first. I thought the explanation for Bill resisting the Cyberman programming was satisfactory. Now this next point is not so much a criticism but an alternative way things could have played out – I would have liked to have seen more of the creepy horror side of the Cybermen from episode 11. That’s what could have made a 10/10 finale for me.

And now onto the good parts.

Generally, I very much enjoyed it. I never lost focus throughout the 60 minutes, there was some great music from Murray Gold (including a wonderful variation of the Heaven Sent music) and some really great dialogue too such as the Doctor’s kindness speech to the Masters. Cyber-Bill crying over the Doctor actually made me tear up. A genuinely emotional scene.

The time dilation was used well and it was quite pleasing that Nardole was useful and had a significant role in the episode.
Also, the Master and Missy killing themselves was quite fitting.
And, while seriously silly, the scene in which the Doctor basically went around blowing up Cybermen was super fun.

Oh, and the last few scenes with the Doctor in the TARDIS refusing to the regenerate and the 1st Doctor appearing were obviously great too!

Overall, I’m thinking a generous 8.5/10 (compared to the 9.5/10 for episode 11).

I’ve watched ‘The Doctor Falls’ three times in total now. Twice in isolation, and once alongside ‘World Enough and Time’. I can’t fault the direction, and I certainly can’t fault the acting. I just come away from it feeling slightly short changed on each viewing. The problem is that the build up and set up laid out in ‘World Enough and Time’, doesn’t totally satisfy in ‘The Doctor Falls’. I dunno…maybe Moffat was writing against expectations and the most predictable ending. It certainly feels like it. Indeed, it works I places, but fails to deliver on others. Overall I do consider this a 2 part story finale. ‘World Enough and Time’ I’d give 10/10. ‘The Doctor Falls’ I’d give 8/10. So averaging it out, the overall adventure gets a 9/10. But that’s mainly down to acting, directing and most of the writing. Plus if nothing else, it’s an adventure that still keeps you glued to the television.

Yep, pretty much. My scores are slightly closer together than yours (9.5 and 8.5) but same average score and I do actually feel I might be being a tad generous for ‘The Doctor Falls’ anyway.

Now I’ve watched TDF a second time just 2 things leave me perplexed.

If WNT/TDF could be alternatively called “Genesis Of The Cybermen” how could the latest upgrade model that was first shown in “The Nightmare In Silver” appear here?(Although it would make sort of sense if the Master regenerated as Missy got these Cybermen from the colony ship under her control as a prequel to DW/DIH).Otherwise unless they were being kept as a reserve force surely they would have been around from the time of the Second Doctor upon leaving the colony ship after escaping the temporal effects of the black hole.

And what’s with a weapon like an energy screwdriver that can prevent a Timelord/Lady just regenerating if the’ve not used them all up? All these years then in which Dalek/Cybermen weapons at the right setting could have conceivably stopped the Doctor getting beyond his second regeneration. Don’t just take that at in universe face value. And then of course there was the partially successful resurrection when the Master had refused to regenerate at the end of “Last of the Time Lords”. So won’t be surprised if we haven’t actually seen the last of The Master /Missy.(As usual.)

the different eras of the cybermen were there due to the ship making things go faster so they updated quicker

But if they updated to the NIS model so soon still seems anachronistic.

You have to remember, this wasn’t the definitive genesis of the cybermen (Thank Rassilon they didn’t contradict/de-canonise Spare Parts by Big Finnish) These Cybermen were trapped in a confined area (the 400m x 100m space ship) These Cybermen as far as we know never have an interaction with the doctor outside of this story. This is briefly addressed in the doctors comment about ‘parallel evolution’, As both ships were mondasian, the technology was similar enough to create very similar beings, both became known as cybermen.
These cybermen evolve quicker due to the time dialation, a luxury the cybermen elsewhere do not really have as the most of the rest of the universe evolves at a similar rate. It may also seem quicker due to the fact they are confined to the one area, whereas other cybermen went through various stages of evolution all over the place, from their creation on Mondas (Tenth Planet), to their residence on Telos (Tomb OTC) and their attack on Volga (Attack OTC), Ultimately, the most recent step in their evolution has been combining their technology with that of parallel earth cybermen who managed (somehow) to escape the void (following the events of Doomsday) creating the Iron me- sorry, the cybermen we first met in Nightmare in silver.

Series 9’s finale was better than series 10’s.

I think in both series, the penultimate episode has been better than the last episode. ‘Heaven Sent’ and ‘World Enough and Time’ are both 10/10 episodes. ‘Hell Bent’ and ‘The Doctor Falls’ are both 8/10 episodes. That’s only my opinion of course.

I’d much rather it was Bills Mum who saved her at the end and takes her away into the after life, imagine that spending a life time not knowing her and keeping her in your head all the time and then having seeing her again at the end of your life. That bond seemed stronger than the one between her and Heather

Moffat said he kept Bill alive so Chibnall could make up his mind about what to do with her which is no way to run a show but whatever. I’d have preferred instead of Heather saving the day out of nowhere, Bill symbolically takes the Doctor back to the TARDIS where he belongs and deactivates her life support unit killing herself after thinking the Doctor has died and refusing to live as a cyberman. The Doctor will wake up see a dead bill, stumble outside and still have his encounter with the first doctor in the Christmas special and in the closing scenes where it’s handed over to Chibnall his first piece of dialogue could confirm whether Bill was dead or not going forward from then. That would leave her fate hanging after Saturday’s episode and would have avoided the fairy tale nonsense that we actually got. But that’s just my opinion; the final scenes were fine with me right until moffat had to ruin it by adding one piece of dialogue ‘I can put you back whenether you want’ or something like that suggesting that instead of Bill being in her own little afterlife she can actually be saved and restored whenether she chooses. Put a big bullet through the episode for me. But these are just my opinions.

If the Saxon Master does end up regenerating into the Missy Master, (there are theories out there that suggest that Missy may be an incarnation several regenerations away from the Saxon Master as she never answered him when he said “You must be the next one along”), that would lead nicely into Dark Water where the Doctor first meets Missy as she has the Cybermen under her control – this could be from the ship in The Doctor Falls.

    Thoughts?
