I THINK PETER CAPALDI HAS GREAT TAST TO HIS CHARECTOR

    1. Jon Pertwee – his first 12 stories is the best run in the series history…
    2. Tom Baker – …only equalled by Baker’s ’75 – ’77 run from his debut ‘Robot’ to ‘The Sunmakers’ halfway through season 15 (dramatically downhill after that with a few exceptions).
    3. Perhaps Peter Capaldi (definately the best of the new doctors)

…the others are also-rans imo. although Sylvester McCoy’s 3rd & last series along with the 10/10 ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ story might just be enough to place him 4th.

The worst for me is Peter Davison – just too weak and wishy-washy (he’s wonderful in ‘All Creatures Great & Small’ however!).

For me all the Doctors are great, just like there was no “Golden Age of Doctor Who” because we are always in the golden age. For me William Hartnell would have to be at the top, without him there would be nothing for the others to succeed from. If anyone had to be least then it must be Chris Eccleston, okay he gave us one year but any actor for the part should be committed to at least three and also he is the only one not to embrace the role after he left

    1) Hartnell
    2) Capaldi
    3) T Baker
    4) Smith
    5) Tennant
    6) McCoy
    7) C Baker
    8) Troughton
    9) Pertwee
    10) McGann
    11) Hurt
    12) Davison
    13) Eccleston

I first watched dr who growing up with the great jon pertwee as my first doctor he will always be number one to me. Next is peter davison as my second choice,it was a risk having such a contrasting younger doctor and taking over from the longest running doctor tom baker. Which has paved the way to other younger actors to become the norm as becoming the doctor.Tom baker is in my third place as i loved his first few years as the dr and was everything a doctor should be ,but later on the storys were not as good and got to silly at times, but did enjoy his last few storys.Next is a tough one but i have to say matt smith in forth place. He like davison had a hard time taking over from a very good actor and dr david tennent, and to be very honest i was not sure if he would be any good but he more than pulled it off and with lots of heart .In fifth place is patrick troughton if it was not for him i don’t think we would be having any sort of poll at all as it is down to him that he did such good as being the second dr.Sxth place is david tennent,he was a very good dr to take over from chris after one season and turn it into his own.In seventh place i have to say is peter capaldi,a very good contrast to matt smith and a return to a older dr is great,in a few years i think he will be higher on my list. Now this is tough but i have to say william hartnell without this man there would be no dr who a great doctor at number eight. And at nine is dr nine chris eccelston,he was the best choice at the time to bring the doctor to the 21st century, he would have been higher in my list but due to only one season this effected my vote which is a shame.Paul Magann would have been a good doctor but with only a movie under his belt and only half the time in it gives him a low number ,but he was great in the 50th minisode and did show how good he could have been so he is tenth. With my next two choices it just pains me as by the 80’s the bbc had given up on the show at most lack of money and just plain bad scripts did not help them.So in eleventh place has to be slyvester MCcoy he did not have a great first season and up against a rival soap and little air time the seventh dr did not have much chance. Even though his last season was great im sure given more time and money and they didn’t decide to pull the plug the seventh dr would have done a lot better. Then come’s last place and i hate to do this to colin baker as i thought he was a good choice to play the part, but with his bad costume made very unlikeable and little air time and then sacked, gave him little if any chance at all to shine.Colin baker had the worst deal of all so i have to put him in twelth place.

Eccleston, because you can’t beat a bloke with a northern accent and big ears!

I’ve seen odds and ends from the Classic era, but I can’t give honest judgement on the first 8. Mind you, Cushing as ‘Doctor Who’ in the movies was quite good, I think similar to Hartnell but more…fun. I guess I like Eccleston because he was my first Doctor, but also he’s quite developed as well, which is nice. He’s a broken man after the time war, and he’s just trying to do what he does best, even though it often lead him into moral grey territory.

    They all brought something different!

    The first brought DOCTOR WHO!
The second brought a musical instrument
    The third brought fight
    The fourth brought jelly babies
    The fifth brought celery
The sixth brought a multicolour coat
    The seventh brought an umbrella
The eighth brought a more deeply emotional doctor
The war doctor brought the darker side of the doctor
The ninth re-launched the show and was more layed back
The tenth brought madness (HE IS THE BEST)
    The eleventh brought the craziness
    The twelfth brought the eyebrows

Absolutely agree with you, and he’s exactly what the show needs, there’s rumours that the BBC will be dumbing down the series due to fan complaints, I don’t know what fans they are talking about but Capaldi is amazing and his performance brings me back to my childhood love of the series, the sense of danger and madness and the understanding that this is because he is not human, does not think like a human, he’s not just some whacky human in a suit waving his arms around and saying I’m great, he’s the Doctor.

Well my favourite all time on screen Doctor is and always will be the Tenth Doctor portrayed by David Tennant who in my opinion is the best actor ever in the history of Doctor Who even better than Christopher Ecclestone, Tom Baker, Matt Smith and all the rest of them. And it’s all down to David Tennant that I fell in love with Doctor Who in the first place

Drama channel do them occasionally but DVD is your best bet. Classic ones apart from the Paul McGann TV Movie are not on Netflix. Youtube copies are often not as good quality as DVD often has extra scenes. Hope I have helped.

iTunes and Amazon do downloads of some, and there is a complete set of DVDs which can be found at BBC shop, amazon or a selection should be available at your nearest HMV. Currently the Horror channel has been repeating classic episodes but the Drama channel (which can be found on freeview) so far have no plans to continue repeating classic episodes since last year’s repeat of the TV movie.
Also I could recommend the Target novelisations, some episodes are available almost entirely on YouTube (The Five Doctors is a notable example) and you may be able to source second hand VHSs if you have a video player.
      Hope this helps.

(I remember in my maths class one of the classmates randomly talked about doctor who and then the teacher joined in and when the classmates asked everyone who was there favourite doctor they mainly said david tenant a couple of others said e.g Chris and then they were arguing and stuff, apart from me and my friend as we were just being quiet and doing the work (as that was what we were meant to be doing) but my friend was saying in her head matt smith is the best and I agree matt smith is the best.

My Dad (rest his soul) and my mums best Doctor was Jon Pertwee’s, my mate who i got back into contact with a few years ago has Matt Smith as his fave, cus i got him into Doctor Who, so he is his Doctor, and as for myself, my fave is David Tennant. I do like Matt too and Sir John Hurt’s War Doctor, but my all time fave is Tennant. Hopefully when Capaldi decides to leave the role, they will cast someone MUCH better, or even re-cast Paul McGann, as i would like to see a series with his Doctor.

    My Doctor Order:

    1) Christopher Eccleston (My first proper Doctor)
    2) Jon Pertwee (Great Stories)
    3) Peter Capaldi (Outstanding!)
    4) Patrick Troughton (Great monsters – Ice Warriors, Yeti, Cybermen)
    5) William Hartnell (The original, you might say!)
    6) John Hurt (Unique, Unexpected)
    7) David Tennant (A very different doctor but still amazing)
    8) Tom Baker (So many great stories such as the Seeds of Doom)
    9) Matt Smith (A great doctor with some good stories, not too keen on some of the stories though such as the rebel flesh)
    10) Sylvester McCoy (Some great stories such as The Curse of Fenric, shame about the budget)
    11) Peter Davison (Some great companions such as Adric…actually…erm…maybe not!)
    12) Paul McGann (not enough really to judge)
    13) Colin Baker (Terrible Stories, Terrible Doctor!)

Interesting Top 13, and I see what you mean about the Doctors. My Top 13 would be:

      1) Peter Capaldi (Fantastic actor, fantastic incarnation and debuted in the best series of New Who).
      2) David Tennant (The one that made me love Doctor Who – Series 4 was amazing)
      3) Jon Pertwee (Best Classic Doctor and has some really enjoyable stories!)
      4) Matt Smith (Hilarious and great incarnation of the Doctor, Series 5 and 7 were brilliant)
      5) Tom Baker (Great stories in his era)
      6) Paul McGann (He was brilliant in the movie and in NoTD, I want to see more!)
      7) Sylvester McCoy (Great Doctor and I’ve enjoyed his episodes I’ve seen so far)
      8) Colin Baker (I really like this Doctor but again, his stories were a bit weak)
      9) Christopher Eccleston (Very good incarnation but not the best series)
      10) Peter Davison (Good but his stories are weak)
      11) John Hurt (Not enough to judge but he was good in the 50th Special)
      12) Patrick Troughton (Only seen 1 story but he seems good)
      13) William Hartnell (Only watched parts of certain stories and he isn’t anything good)

Last Goth, I’d advise taking another look at McCoy’s era. If the BBC were behind his era, I really believe it could have seen the high point of the show and the wilderness years would have been avoided. If you can get past season 24’s panto-tendencies, there is a lot to love.

(Earthshock, The Five Doctors, The Cave of Androzanni, Trial of a Time Lord, the first half of Season 25, and nearly all of Season 26 for high points, with Warriors of the Deep, The Twin Dilemma, The Two Doctors, and the entirety of Season 24 as low points.

May I ask why people like Tennant so much?
In my opinion he was dreadful
He was smarmy, would do the same thing each time something supposedly sad or dramatic happened and displayed character traits that were wrong for the doctor. For example, the doctor would never say “Let me save you” to Davros. He tried to execute davros in Ressurection of the daleks and blew up his own planet in remembrance of the daleks.

Try and name some personality traits he has that no ever doctor has and I can guarantee that you will struggle.

We all have opinions anyway, but to be honest, it’s been said so many times that the Doctor’s personality changes each regeneration. Therefore, he can feel like he wants to save Davros if he wants. As far as we know, he could change into an evil incarnation, but that won’t happen because what would be the point of the show?
Their personalities change, and not everyone likes every Doctor.

I agree, the tenth doctor was pretty poor, nothing to do with Tennant’s acting but more to do with the over arching story lines and mainly Rose, their relationship was so bad, creepy and cheesy…

The whole point of the Doctor is that he regenerates and is different each time. Why should they all have the same character traits?

Anonymous, I agree, Tennant is one of my favourites but that was one thing I disliked. The relationship between him and Rose.

Dalek The Supreme, yeah true, but nowadays you could say Eccleston is ‘forgotten’, and many people still do love Matt. But the bigger fanbase combined in the Tennant era, and also when Tennant regenerated, many fans stopped watching the show.

    • Dalek The Supreme

TheExtremeBlueTARDIS, yes, but that’s mostly because Matt Smith is still freshly gone, relatively, and Christopher Eccleston had one season, as oppsed to Smith’s three (over the course of four years). Matt Smith probably won’t fade into obscurity as much as Eccleston, McGann, Hurt, or most of the classic Doctors, but he’ll still be largely in Tennant’s shadow.

    • TheExtremeBlueTARDIS

      January 5th, 2015 - 3:52pm

That’s very true. I think Tennant and Smith are just almost equally brilliant, though Tennant for me is just slightly better. The only thing that bothered me was the loss of fans when Tennant regenerated. They can’t expect him to stay forever.

For me, it will either be, Tom Baker, or David Tennant. I grew up on Tom Baker, and then into Peter Davison, and enjoyed those two in general. However, I switched off at Colin Baker as I just didn’t think it was very good anymore, and life progression was taken up with playing for my football club and training, so I stopped watching. I certainly never got into Sylvester McCoy – his look alone I distinctively remember thinking he looked like a reject from 1950’s Butlins, and then Ace conformed to a lot of the negative stereotypes that were in London at the time with the baseball jacket and bat. So time passes, the movie was ‘ok’ and I think Paul McGann would have been terrific ( I love Night Of The Doctor and think it’s one of Moffatt’s best works.) I digress. I didn’t get into Christopher Eccelston at all, and again, just switched off ( with subsequent viewing , there is some good stuff, the Doctor is alright, but a lot is designed to capture the new kids that were viewing.) So when David Tennant came along, I gave it a go and was hooked, and from that, I got back into the old stuff I watched as a kid and then into the first 3 Doctors, whom I’d only seen bits n’ pieces of on repeats, and I love all 3 of the actors in their role playing the Doctor. Then Matt Smith comes along, and I can honestly say, I thought the majority of it was awful, and he is in my worst 3, quite comfortably. I couldn’t stand that drama, weight and gravity was substituted with childish tantrums and buffoonery. It’s not a reflection on the actor, just the stories and how the portrayal was designed – and of course, personal tastes and prejudices, and had he stayed longer, I would have switched off quite happily. Now we have Peter Capaldi, and I appreciate him a whole lot more. So, as to my favourite, Tom Baker……..or David Tennant.

Poor colin, always last in every poll (When I say last I mean out of the Onscreen doctors, while yeah, The Valeyard technically was a ‘Doctor’ but never mind.)

I have been watching Dr Who since I was about 6 years old, I am 58 years old. The actor Peter Capaldi would have to be the best Dr Who since the original Dr. He is not your friend but he is on your side.
    Loved the Christmas special.
    Cheers

I couldn’t agree more. I see a lot of the 1st and some of the 4th in him. I understand why some fans are finding it hard to adjust to him but they need to…because this is the way forward.

May I ask why Troughton is at the bottom of your list? He is at the top of mine!
