12th Doctor Revealed – What do you Think?

12th Doctor Revealed – What do you Think?

The new Doctor is Peter Capaldi!

Peter-Capaldi

So the wait is over and we now know who will take over from Matt Smith in the Christmas Special – so what do you think?

In a special live broadcast, the BBC today announced that the role of Doctor Who would next be played by Peter Capaldi.

Amid much hype and speculation, Peter Capaldi was unveiled as the next Doctor during a special live television event on BBC ONE tonight.

Widely regarded as one of the biggest roles in British television, Capaldi will be the Twelfth Doctor and takes over from Matt Smith who leaves the show at Christmas.

Peter Capaldi says: “Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer says : “It’s an incendiary combination: one of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television. Peter Capaldi is in the TARDIS!”

Doctor Who companion, Jenna Coleman says “I’m so excited Peter Capaldi is the man taking on the challenge of becoming the Twelfth Doctor. With Steven’s writing and his talent I know we’ll be making an amazing show with an incredible incarnation of number 12. I can’t wait to start this new adventure!”

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One says : “Peter Capaldi has all the genius and versatility needed to take on the mantel of the great Time Lord and make the role his own. He’ll bring his own particular wisdom, charisma and wit to the Twelfth Doctor and take the show into an exciting new era.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning says : “We started thinking Peter Capaldi might be the right person to take on this iconic part a few months ago. But it was only when he did a secret audition at Steven’s house under the cover of darkness that we knew we had our man. He’s an extraordinarily talented actor who can seemingly turn his hand to anything. We can’t wait to premiere his unique take on the Doctor on Christmas Day and we are sure he’s going to become one of the all-time classic Doctors.”

He has enjoyed an illustrious career to date in both film and television.

Before securing the coveted role of the Twelfth Doctor, Peter first appeared in Doctor Who in 2008, playing Caecilius in the episode “The Fires of Pompeii”.

Peter grew up in Glasgow and attended the Glasgow School of Art, while studying there he secured his first breakthrough role in Local Hero (1983). He has also had roles in Dangerous Liaisons, The Crow Road, The Devil’s Whore and Torchwood: Children of Earth.

2013 has been a busy year for Peter who has been seen on screen in the film World War Z and in BBC Two drama series The Hour, for which he was BAFTA nominated. Not only will Peter film his first scenes for Doctor Who this Autumn, but he will appear in the forthcoming film The Fifth Estate and the Disney film Maleficent.

Peter is currently filming new BBC One drama series The Musketeers, in which he plays Cardinal Richelieu which will launch in early 2014.

Age doesn’t matter but wasn’t the Dr supposed to get younger! I will still look forward to Peter as the doctor I hope he can live up to this most popular character ever. Can’t wait to see the Christmas episode

What is it with all of you judging him already?
‘Oh he’s to old!’- Have you seen the classics? Most of the doctors were older, it’s only recently that there young! Oh and there’s:
‘He’s not as good as Matt Smith’- And you know how? He’s not even started yet!
‘He’s too well known’- It doesn’t matter! Every person who plays the doctor is generally remembered as the doctor anyway.
It was the same stuff when Matt started and look at us all now. We love him!

Come on fellow Whovians, give the guy a chance and I’m sure hell be great!

The well know thing doesn’t bother me, so long as he doesn’t have a iconic role, so a character he is regarded as, then I’m fine. And matt smith is VERY well know now and still plays the doctor extremely well, after a few episodes he’ll be we’ll known as the doctor.

Peter Capaldi is one of the best actors around… His acting skills don’t come into it. But I’m guessing you don’t think he suits the character.

I’m not saying that stuff myself, I’m just telling people that he will be great and they should stop having pathetic excuses as to why they don’t like him. Personally I think he will be amazing

It is good to see a mature choice and someone for us older viewers, who have been fans of the show for decades, to get behind.

Good choice in Peter I think. An older Doctor, and hopefully a darker Doctor should be good for the show.

I’m looking forward to seeing him at Christmas, but will still miss Matt!

Brilliant choice, great to know its someone older who can bring more respect and gravity to the role. No to demean the roles of Matt and David, but this is definitely a move in the right direction. How long do people think he will be around for?

Yes he will. I bet you’re saying that because he is Scottish. If he had been English then half the people who are complaining about him being old would have been chuffed with him.

    • RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND

      August 4th, 2013 - 8:09pm

i don’t know about that Scott. I think it’s more that Docor Who has been quite young since ’05, rose was young, so was martha, so is clara, and so was matt, this is taking Who into a whole new direction of a slightly older actor, and it’s different to what we are all used to. i think that that is more the reason, it’s chaning what we all know so well

think he will be good, although i will always see him as Caecilius and J Frobisher. Preferred if he wasnt that well known giving someone else a chance of making their career and also can’t really picture him with Clara! but i will watch and wait.

Of course he won’t kiss Clara the Doctor never kissed his companions until ‘The Parting of the Ways’!!!! Give poor Peter a chance!

    • The TARDIS

      August 4th, 2013 - 7:55pm

I don’t really see why kissing is the main priority. Fair enough, it’s a different opinion to mine and I respect that, but kissing? There must be better reasons.

    • Tom Ballaam

      August 4th, 2013 - 8:21pm

The TARDIS, I agree. Why does kissing have to be a priority. It was only a thing from the TV Movie in 1996. Doctor Who lasted 26 years without the Doctor kissing a companion. It got it’s highest ratings when there was no kissing. I don’t understand why age is such a thing for people. Watch some William Hartnell, then rethink….

    • Long time Who fan

      August 4th, 2013 - 8:52pm

Not happy. Peter Capaldi seems too dry. I grew up on Tom Baker, and the Doctor is supposed to be quirky. Tom Baker, David Tennant and Matt Smith all pulled that off, this guys seems too stiff and boring. Matt Smith could make me laugh, I don’t anticipate any laughs with this guy. Disappointed. I think Matt Smith will be sorry that he left, I am.

    • The TARDIS

      August 4th, 2013 - 9:31pm

I personally think that when you start saying “The Doctor’s supposed to be…” you are limiting it. I think that Doctor Who should be mad and different and keep you on your toes. The Doctor can never have one set of characteristics, he’s ever-changeable. William Hartnell (the Original, you might say) wasn’t quirky. Being so strange is what makes it Doctor Who.

I think that its the correct time maybe a little late, because when he lost amy pond and rory, it was the moment that you realized that smith has already past for every thing and maybe it will be the correct moment, because then if smith could be recover but then it would be nothing more stronger or I can’t imagine
