Anyone else think the Christmas special wasn’t very Dr Who-ish ?

I found it didn’t make any sense, though I understand Steven Moffat’s approach, trying to make sure Doctor Who is still the cleverest, biggest Sci-Fi fantasy show on TV , as he says, it’s got to be. πŸ˜‰

So they forced alot of the drama and happy-ending/plot developments that felt wierd were all forced to amke the episode better from a dramatic point of view, although it was much less believable becuase of this. 😯

This is al lwhat I read in DWM.

filming starts February, Amy and Rory leave, they seem to be in a least a couple of episodes, there are supposedly 2 returning classic monsters, that’s about all i know.

Steven Moffat also said in DWM 442 that there will be no two parters in series 7 unless there really needs to be.

The doctor should meet Kennedy in the 7th season to help stop aliens working with Russians from causing a nuclear war in 1962.

A JFK story with The Doctor is a must…please make it so !

    • McGann is the Doctor.

      January 29th, 2012 - 6:09pm

Funny you should all say that, because Head-producer Moffat and actor Matt Smith had a great interview on BBC I-player (or wahtever) and were told by the guy on the radio an idea about the JFK assassination for the 50th anniv

And they were like: “So, the Doctor killed JFK ?” 😯 !!

We’ll see, but it may be too sensitive a matter, having John F Kennedy’s assassination dealt with in a Science-fantasy series. ❗

yes moffat makes mistakes but i think he has done exceptionally well overall especially with series 6 which is the best series yet in my eyes. Also i thought this was a very well written episode, dont understand all the negativity surounding it.

It was terrible. I give it 1/10 it gets a one because the doctor was in it.

    • McGann is the Doctor.

      January 29th, 2012 - 6:12pm

If you didn’t like the special, fair enough, it was massively flawed.

But don’t rip on Steven Moffat, he’s a great vision for this series, and has brought Dr Who alot closer to the true form (apart from the rubbish new Daleks, that was the only bad decision).

Since the David Tennant years, the Series really does feel like a continuation to the Classic era than just a mad reboot that does it’s own thing and gives no respect to the shows history. Thanks to the Moff. Give him a chance πŸ˜‰

You mean since a Christams Charol.

And hte ratings for Series 6 were below 10 million but they weren’t as bad as you may think, the initial live ratings (at about 6 million) donot count those who record the episode in the week, or watch the repeat in that week, or even Iplayer. When they do count all of that, the rating for (say, Impossible astronaught) went from a 6.9 to a healthy 8.6 ! :lawl:

i would probably rate this special 7/10
I thought that the opening 20 minutes were excellent( the pre-titles sequence, Madge helping the doctor, Reg’s plane going down the doctor showing Madge and the kids round the house etc, I also thought that the closing 7 mins, from reg returning from the dead until the doctors little tear were excellent, very very emotional, but the story with the forest and the trees and the wooden king and queen really didnt grab me and i felt it was trying too hard and didnt hang together very well, too many different elements clashing, i still think A CHRISTMAS CAROL is by far the best christmas special πŸ™‚

Is it me or are the Moffat stories just trying too hard? It’s a shame because I truly believe Matt Smith is the best Doctor…ever, and I’ve been a fan for over 40 years. Why can’t we get some old fashioned stories that actually make sense, without the silliness and huge story arcs.

Hi, The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe was a good special but I think the Wooden King and Wooden Queen didn’t appear to be very threatening and they were underused in the fact that they put the relay on everyone and different times and that’s it. After that they just stand there and do NOTHING! But the overnight ratings are good and the final ratings will be around 10 million so pretty good. πŸ™‚

The Monsters aren’t really that important. And anyway, I thought their part in the story was good enough, the Wooden King was really scary !

And I have no idea how they did the monsters, got the mto move and look so real. It was scary when the King is awakend and goes up the staircase, towards our main characters.

But they turn out to be benevolent, not a threat, you see ? πŸ˜‰

I would give the christmas special a 4/10 as it was written badly, but did have three good things that I liked in it. They are: The comedy, the ending and the reference to androzani back from 1984 with the fifth doctor.

have to agree with you there! Moffats weakest script yet! (and I like Moffat! Don’t do this again Moffat) But I would give it a 6 instead just because Matt Smith was on fire with the material he was given.

    • McGann is the Doctor.

      December 28th, 2011 - 8:58pm

That was one of the redeeming factors of the special. The Doctor was great, being more sacrastic and whitty than ever ! (being a Sixth Doctor fanatic, I love it)

And it was well-made (apart from the CGI longshots of the spaceship, and the Tardis, ❗ ). The Monster-character looked stunningly real, as did the forests, the only real down-side to this special, was the guest actors. πŸ˜›

The only time I’ve ever properly wanted to hate Moffat forever is when he wrote the Rose reference in The Wedding Of River Song right before the Doctor received the phonecall concerning the Brigadier. What I saw online disgusted me!
