Details of new Doctor Who episodes revealed

From The BBC Press office…

Doctor Who is set to take on one of his biggest monsters to date, as the BBC announces at ComicCon that episode two of the new series will be called Dinosaurs On A Spaceship, with episode three confirmed as A Town Called Mercy.

Requiring one of the largest sets to date to house the prehistoric creatures, Dinosaurs On A Spaceship will follow the equally epic Asylum Of The Daleks, which kicks-off the showโ€™s highly anticipated return to BBC One in the autumn.

Starring Matt Smith as the Doctor, Karen Gillan as Amy and Arthur Darvill as Rory, the episode will also co-star Mark Williams from the Fast Show as Roryโ€™s dad, Brian, and Rupert Graves from Sherlock. Dinosaurs On A Spaceship was written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Saul Metzstein.

The BBC also confirmed today that episode three, filmed on location in Spain, will be a western entitled A Town Called Mercy. Written by Toby Whithouse and again directed by Saul Metzstein, the episode co-stars Adrian Scarborough and Ben Browder.

Steven Moffat, Head Writer and Executive Producer, said: โ€œDinosaurs On A Spaceship – what more do you need! The Doctor will come face to face with some of the most monstrous creatures evolution has ever produced, on some of the most monstrous sets we’ve ever built. We took one look at Chris Chibnall’s brilliant script and said to ourselves ‘We’re going to need a bigger corridor’.

“And Toby Whithouse’s A Town Called Mercy takes us into a genre Doctor Who hasn’t attempted since the Sixties – it’s a full blooded western. We knew from the start we need some serious location shooting for this one, and given the most iconic American setting imaginable, there was only one place to go – Spain.”

Both episodes were shot earlier this year, with Dinosaurs On A Spaceship filmed in Cardiff.

The show returns with a run of five followed by the Christmas special and a further eight episodes in 2013.

This is not strictly anything to do with Doctor Who, but today I uploaded this J.J. Abram’s Star Trek style Doctor Who poster and thought maybe it could be used to promote the upcoming series.

Hope you all like it – http://doctorwhoone.deviantart.com/art/Doctor-Who-J-J-Abrams-Star-Trek-style-poster-316423407

I know we are all interested in the titles, being fans of the show, but seriously, sme of you have to calm down, analyzing the titles…

I mean, some of the best titles have come from the Moffett era…Let’s Kill Hitler…Silence in the Library…Blink…all Moffett shows…so, freaking out over Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, which sounds like a homage to Snakes on a Plane, makes no sense to me…it’s JUST. A. TITLE.

There is a possibility that the new series could start on the 25th Auguest as the new series of Merlin should start a week after the first half of Doctor Who. Whether or not this is true is a different matter but it is a therory.

      Y’see, I think it’s on the 18th.

14th is the premiere, (Tuesday) and 8th is the nearest Saturday. Theory over!

I doubt it’ll be the 18th. It’s a bit too soon after the premiere and there’d be no point in the premiere at the Edinburgh TV Festival the following week. ๐Ÿ™‚

i think it’s really stupid how long they have made us wait for doctor who this year and with only one extremely short trailer they really havnt done this well I mean I’m actually getting angry how long we have had to wait and not even a decent trailer ! >:(

We only saw that clip of Asylum of the Daleks because it was the only part of the epiosde filmed when the trailer was released. The same goes for Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and A Town Called Mercy. There were only clips from those episodes becuase they had only just been filmed. ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope Moffat dosen’t ruin it, because it looks set to be really good. I think that episode one might be a bit of a let down, I just don’t think one episode is long enough for a Dalek story. (Apart from “Dalek” which was fantastic.) Episode 2 I think will be average and I’m expecting good things from episode 3 4 and 5

PS, whoever is moderating these comments, I’d like to apologise for my previous and now deleted input to this discussion, it was meant as a joke, but looking back it was completely inappropriate.

TRUE, ONE EPISODE FOR A DALEK STORY IS NOT LONG ENOUGH.
My dream wish is to have a full on serious dalek war…abit like ‘falling skies’ of ‘Battlestar Galactica’ BUT WITH DALEKS in its own spin off series, or a big budget cinema release. Keep wishing!

I like the first epsidoe title, it sounds like theres a big messgae behind it and if there is going to be a big fight between all the daleks then that would be great. The title for the second epsiode is a bit cheesy but after reading it a few times i began to laugh a bit and it does sound quiet exciting and there definetely is more than meets the eye with this epsidoe i bet. Are you kidding me, a five year old could have thought of a better title
for epsiode three. Steven Moffat would have thought of a much better title if he was writing it. Im glad it isn’t called “The Gunslingers” but the title still doesn’t sound like its been thought through much; apart from the title it looks like an awsome epsidoe and i think it should be a two parter. They must be exetending the time for the episodes
because not only does a lot of freaking crazy and awusome stuff happen in teh third epsiode
but the Doctors jacket changes, so unless its a two parter or soemthing just happens to his jacket and its like “The Curse of The Black Spot” where he becomes almost powerless and has to stay over night in the ship, the epsidoes must be longer than before. If the fourth epsiode is called “Cubed” it better be a bloody good epsiode or i will be pissed of and come on, cubes that make people sick (not confirmed), anyone could think of that. Really looking forward to ponds last epsidoe. “The Crimson Horror” and “Phantoms of the Hex” sound really good; i’m glad that it seems that an epsidoe will be a proper vicotrian episode and I’m glad some of “the team to save amy” ( i know thats a terrilble name for them) are coming back. I think the victorian episode will be interesting and will be easy to make. I really want Danny Boy and Captain Avery and his men and Canton to come back. Finally, if i hear anyone dissing the daleks in any way or any of Steven Moffats epsiodes and they call themsleves a Whovian then i think they should
think again (don’t take it to heart or
anything but take a note of it).

I don’t llike the sound of “Angels of New York” I would like a bigger message behind it, not so specific, “The Doctors Wife” is a good example of having a good message behind it. I like the first episode title; it seems like theres a message behind that and if what people say are correct and there will be a big fight between the daleks then that would be brilliant. The second episode is a bit chessy but after reading it a few times i started to make me laugh a bit and it sounds like a really exciting epsiode but theres definetley more to it than meets the eye. Are you kidding me; a five year old could have thought of that title for episode three; Steven Moffat could have thought of a way better one. If the fourth epsiode is called “Cubed” then it better be a bloody good epsiode or i will be so pissed off.”The Crimson Horror” and “Phantom of the Hex” sound good; I’m glad that it seems that Doctor Who will do a proper victorian epsiode because i think it would be quite interesting and it would be easy to do. Also, im glad that some of the “save Amy team” (i know thats a terrible name for them) will be back. I would also like Danny Boy and Captsin Avery and his men to come back. Finally, if i hear anyone dissing the daleks in any way and they call themselves a whovian then i think they should think again (try not take that too close to heart or anything but take note of it).

Actually, the start date of 25th August has been all but confirmed thanks to Merlin’s start date of 29th September being revealed as a week after the first run of 5 episodes end. This could easily change though.

So it goes 25th August to 22nd September then a 3 month gap until the Christmas special if those details are right.

That’s not correct at all. Both Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and Asylum of the Daleks blow A Town Called Mercy out of the water with the amount of money and time put into them.
A Town Called Mercy was purely locational filming; the two others relied on heavy CGI, and set design, among more.
