Doctor Who kicks off global tour with Cardiff premiere

Doctor Who kicks off global tour with Cardiff premiere

The much-anticipated new series of Doctor Who will have its world premiere in Cardiff on August 7, BBC Wales has announced today (July 4, 2014).

Marking the start of the BBC One hit sci-fi drama’s spectacular world tour, the premiere will be fans’ first chance to see Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, alongside Jenna Coleman as on-screen companion Clara, in episode one of the new series.

The stars will be attending the lunchtime St David’s Hall red carpet event, together with lead writer and producer Steven Moffat. Tickets will be available to the public from St David’s Hall Box Office from Monday 7 July.

The feature-length premiere episode of the eighth series, entitled Deep Breath, will land on BBC One on Saturday 23 August, 2014.

BBC Wales Director Rhodri Talfan Davies says: “Doctor Who is getting even bigger and even better – and it’s a real thrill that the show’s fans here in Wales will be the very first to see the new Doctor at this very special premiere screening. Doctor Who has been made in Wales for almost ten years – and we’re so proud of its worldwide success.”

The event is held in association with BFI Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder, the full programme for which will be announced later this month.

Tickets will be available to the public from 10am on 7 July from St David’s Hall Box Office on 029 2087 8444 or online at www.stdavidshallcardiff.co.uk

i emailed the Cardiff venue today to complain about the mess that was trying to book tickets i said i was sure i wouldnt be the only one to complain and expected a generic email to folllow which i thought i would share with everyone

    Dear Mr Bourne,

    DOCTOR WHO 07/07/2014

This is not a circumstance or a situation that we are happy with but given the levels of worldwide interest and response our ticketing system was clearly unable to cope as we would have wished.

In preparation for the on sale of Dr Who St David’s Hall had the full complement of box office staff on duty plus two additional staff brought in from the New Theatre. The web systems were fully primed for what was going to be a very high demand event.

When the doors opened at 10am there was a queue outside the venue longer than 100m. The staff who have on average 20 years experience per person of dealing with events of this nature worked methodically and to the very best of their ability to handle the demand. Bookings were taken from across the globe including Israel, Italy, Canada & Europe.

The sheer demand to book via the internet resulted in the system crashing on two occasions. This resulted in delays of approximately 15 minutes and were dealt with as swiftly as possible by staff to bring systems back on line.

The event sold out in record time, with 20% of bookings taken on the counter to personal visitors, 44% sold via online, and 36% via the telephone.

To try to satisfy the demand as fairly as possible tickets were limited to four per person.

St David’s Hall had been in contact with their ticketing supplier Enta, to endeavour to ensure the best possible system is in place as to provide updates as technological development become available. As such the Hall will in the next week or so move away from the Java seat selection process that has been the cause of some problems on certain operating systems.

St David’s Hall has also been in constant contact with the BBC in an attempt to release further tickets.

    Yours sincerely,

    ROGER HOPWOOD

Same here. 1 hr 45 mins ringing and refereshing. Got into the order stage twice. First one after 50 mins and that timed out. The last one was when there were just tickets left in tier 11. However, when I tried to buy them I was informed I’d ordered too many (1 adult & 2 kids). Tried reducing that order but then sold out.

Fortunately I can cancel the hotel I ordered yesterday.

Has anyone actually managed to book tickets for this? The computer system is awful, we had tickets in the basket at one point before it sent us back to the beginning. We haven’t been able to get there again, and the phone is permanently engaged. Very disappointed with the system.
