Doctor Who National Television Awards

Sherlock and Doctor Who head to head at National Television AwardsFrom BBC News…

Sherlock and Doctor Who are up against each other for two prizes at the National Television Awards this month.

The shows – both run by writer and producer Steven Moffat – are up for best drama, along with Downtown Abbey and Merlin.

Doctor Who star Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock, are in the running for the best actor prize.

Winners will be announced at London’s O2 Arena on 23 January.

Moffat said: “Well this is very flattering, but also terrifying. I hope everyone votes with tremendous care and the result is an exact draw between both shows.”

Karen Gillan, who bowed out last year as the Doctor’s companion Amy Pond, is nominated for the best female drama performance.

She is up against comedy star Miranda Hart for her role in Call The Midwife, Suranne Jones for Scott and Bailey and Sheridan Smith for Mrs Biggs, in which she played the wife of Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs.

In the best male drama performance category, Smith and Cumberbatch are up against Colin Morgan, the star of Merlin, and Daniel Mays for his performance as Ronnie Biggs in Mrs Biggs.

Here’s why I think doctor who didn’t win…the timing of the episodes, everyone has gotten so used to the easter/spring timings for the show that they simply didn’t bother sticking around! That’s what my mum said when she saw that Downton Abbey won!

Yeah I agree, Steven Moffat shouldn’t have cut series 7 in half with part of it last year and part of it this year.

Modern Doctor Who always works well with a new series being broadcast throughout 13 full weeks without interruption like has been the case with series 6 and 7, series 1 to 5 had all played out without a break between episodes, they just played one Saturday after the other and finished 12 Saturdays after the first episode of each series, with a Christmas episode coming later each year.

You said it! There hasn’t been an episode of Doctor Who I didn’t like this year! I bet if it hadn’t been cut in half, it would’ve won big-time!

Doctor Who should win. I was astounded at the epic season opener, and the rest of the episodes were pretty good too! This year, Doctor Who’s had an epic season opener, one, maybe two less-than-outstanding episodes, a tragedy, a dark Doctor, an exciting new companion, and the Daleks! You can’t beat the Daleks!

DOCTOR WHO FOR THE WIN! Down Town is boring from what I’ve watched and drives me up the wall. SO MANY SOAP OPERA’S! I wouldn’t mind if Sherlock got some awards but I’m really rooting for Doctor Who as it is going into it’s 50th year and from many people’s point of view it is the BEST series on TV!

My family is obsessed with that show, ol grandma watches the same drivelly episodes OVER and OVER again on the DVD every week.

Worst of all, when it’s on NOBODY talks, everyone is silent, you have to sit down and shuttup, or leave the room.

I would be fine with this if they were watching something respectable, but the show is just boring and pretentious, you cannot learn anything from it ❗

Don’t worry Dalek Eternal, Downtown Abbey won’t be around for 50 years, I bet you it won’t be around till the end of this decade come 2019.

I can’t stand shows like it, all that annoying posh talk. I bet David Beckham’s Wife Victoria ‘Posh Spice’ Beckham watches it thou since she’s was ment to be the really posh one back in the days of the Spice Girls.

There’s only so many things you can do in a Crumbling Castle in the middle of nowhere! All of it’s actors are getting on too! They’ll be retired come 2015!

To be pedantic, DW hasn’t actually been running for 50 years. Its production stopped in 1989 for a massive 15years!! The BBC hated it! So it actually ran for 26 years, came back as an American production in 1996 and then resumed in 2005. Never forget the 15 years lost.

I can’t vote really, and I haven’t seen any of the other shows, but sheer devotion to Doctor Who as a show, the talented actors and writers running it, the lovable characters, and the Daleks! The Daleks, need I say more? Matt Smith, all the way! Karen Gillan, all the way! Doctor Who, to the end of time itself!

I’m sorry, but if Downtown Abbey is against Doctor Who in any category, you can be rest assured Downtown’s viewers will vote it to the top, above EVERY other show.

I hope Karen Gillan gets the reward for best actress after the Angels Take Manhatten.

From 2005-2011, Doctor Who’s nominations for Best Drama will be seven and it has won five of them, only one of the times it lost was to Downten Abbey and the other was to Waterloo Road and it’s not even nominated this year. So looking at that, and the fact that Doctor Who really stepped up in 2012 when it comes to Drama, I’m fairly confident that Doctor Who will win. The only doubt that I have is that Doctor Who only had six episodes in 2012 so that might put it’s chances of winning in jeopardy. Though we need to look at the fact, that despite the decrease in episode in 2012, the show has improved in many aspects. Every episode, the title sequence changes and keeps us interested, the music is top class (which can really help in a drama), the different blockbuster every episode attracts fans of every genre, the comedy is not just more funnier but has also matured, the wide range of amazing actors and of course the drama itself has vastly improved. The combination of great music and sad moments make for a perfect drama; with the excellent acting as well. Although, Drama’s don’t just consist of sad moments, but also serious, tense and just the transfer from any of those to a happy, cheerful moment if done well. Asylum of the Daleks, Oswalds Dalek form breaks her heart and the Doctors annoyance and judgmental attitude towards her make for an excellent scene, also that fact that she nearly kills him but is so shocked that she stops herself and allows the doctor to escape, aslso the bit when Clara asks him why the Daleks hate him so much is excellent. Not forgetting the sad scene where Amy and Rory fight and the Doctor cleverly manages to get them back together is also heart warming. Those ones being the main ones in that episode. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, more of a comedy, childish episode but there was a lot of tension between the Doctor and Solomon and the shock when the doctor kills Solomon is quite tense for the audience. Also, Brian Willams who played Rorys dad but also played Ron Wesley’s father, will have brought some attention from Harry Potter fans to maybe push them to vote for Docotr Who. A Town Called Mercy, where do i begin, the death of the sheriff, the clever lines from Kalher Jex about always “carrying our prisons” the suicide of Kalher Jex, the tense moments when the town folk were unsure whether they should protect him and the tense moment when The Doctor points a gun at him also the argument between The Doctor and Amy. The Power of Three despite the disapointing “invasion of small cubes” idea, the look into the life of Amy and Rory made for an excellent Drama, all he scenes were the companions seemed to have moved on from the Tardis and whole list more. The Angel Takes Manhaten, doesn’t even need its Drama explaining. In the actor category,if not both then one of the two actors will win the award for best female/male actor for Doctor Who. Keep votes coming people!
