Doctor Who – The Story of an Asylum Dalek

Doctor Who – The Story of an Asylum Dalek

So we’ve now seen the episode Asylum Dalek of The Daleks -but what about all of those the classic Daleks? where did they come from – Here is the story behind one of them.

The BBC production team needed classic Daleks so all those available were drafted in, but with the vast majority of original Daleks had been sold off over the years it was down to the rescued remains and fan made examples to take third place.

This particular Dalek prop is PART original & PART replica, and remains in it’s ‘Resurrection Of The Daleks’ colour scheme – the story from which it comes.

Resurrection of the Daleks is a 5th Doctor story, which was first broadcast in February 1984. This story features Davros and marks the final regular appearance of Tegan Jovanka.

Many parts of the upper body date back to the 1970’s and are thought to have first appeared in the Jon Pertwee Story ‘Planet Of The Daleks’ – and has now been featured in the new series in ‘The Asylum Of The Daleks’ – making it the only Dalek ever to have appeared in both the classic series and the NEW! (at least in part)

After the filming took place the prop was returned to it’s owner Mark Barton Hill (Who fulfilled a childhood dream by appearing in this episode as a Dalek operator)

“It was absolutely smothered in Asylum cobwebs and dust and needed industrial strength cleaning to return it to a normal condition, at one point my heart sank as I thought they’d totally wrecked the paint on the dome and upper body- some of which date back to the 1980s”

Fresh from filming it has now been returned to The Doctor Who Experience Cardiff where it can been seen on display.

The Red sticker was put on it’s dome by the BBC as part of the story in ‘Asylum Of The Daleks’ this marking (symbol) means it’s been deemed insane and condemned to the Asylum for eternity.

Visitors to The Doctor Who Experience may notice that it still has this Asylum RED marking on the dome, but it’s been disguised with grey paint to blend in – as this Dalek represents the 1970’s/80’s appearance in the Evolution of the Daleks.

Asylum of The Daleks airs on Saturday 1st September on BBC1 7:20pm – 8:10pm

Matt Smith returns as the oldest time-traveller in the universe. The Time Lord, Amy and Rory are kidnapped by their oldest foe the Daleks and forced on a seemingly impossible mission – to enter the Asylum, a planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of the deadly aliens’ kind.

They need an escape route, and fast – but with an army of mad Daleks closing in, and the Ponds’ relationship in meltdown, it is up to the Doctor to save not only their lives but his friends’ marriage. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill co-star.

the bbc must have stored some of those old daleks (1963-2010 etc.) and brought them back like it was the 50th aniversery.

My theory is that when the doctor defeats the Daleks they get sent to the asylum for not defeating the doctor therefore inprisoned for life…

No, the Asylum is for Daleks who are mentally unstable, and a threat to other Daleks, so they send them to this planet to simply die their, usually by attacking or being attacked by other mentally unstable Daleks I should imagine.

I’m very confused about something concerning the Emperor Daleks.

Most things Ive read, such as Doctor Who – The Dalek Handbook, suggest or claim that the ‘Evil of the Daleks’ Emperor Dalek is the same one from 2005’s ‘Parting of the Ways’.

Doctor Who Wiki however claims ‘This Emperor was seemingly destroyed by a civil war between humanised Daleks and un-altered Daleks. However, a light was seen blinking on its casing at the end, indicating some kind of activity’.

So is the Emperor from ‘Evil’ and the one from 2005 the same Emperor, or is it just a big mess up that they are not the same but happen to be completely different Emperors ?.

I personally believe they are not one and the same.

They are not the same (we know because there was another emperor entirely at one point, Davros).

      August 26th, 2012 - 3:08pm

True, Davros was Emperor only to the Imperial Daleks loyal to him.

But from what I know of Evil of the Daleks, it seems the Emperor Dalek may have survived, and just was not seen again until the Time War so many years later as the 2005 version.

Perhaps a story talking about the different Emperors would clear up the issue if the ‘Evil’ and 2005 ones are the same or not, cos most things Ive read say they are and some say they are not, it’s real confusing.

This is a little off topic, but I’ve been thinking about going to the Experience in Cardiff for some time now. Can anyone that’s been tell me if it’s any good and worthwhile or not for older fans (i turned 16 earlier this month).
    Thanks

Does this mean there’s no other classic ones returning? The Daleks I want back are:

    Bronze Daleks (definetaly! 🙂 )
    Imperials (I hope they return!)
    Renegades
Paradigm (but only the Drones and Strategists)

And also, one that’s not returning but I wanted it to….. Ironsides! If Davros was in this, I could imagine them with the tea tray and saying to him “Would you care for some tea?” 😆

      August 25th, 2012 - 10:14pm

I have made an idea for an asylum set BooBoo
It could be exlusive to forbidden planet or toys R us. It would have 5 figures:
Figure 1- the Doctor (with sonic screwdriver)
Figure 2- Paradigm drone (with new paint design)
      Figure 3- Dusty resurrection dalek
Figure 4- Extremly damaged Time war dalek
      and I can’t deside figure 5.
Figure 5- option 1- Rory (a new veriant)
option 2- 60’s dalek (with some cobbwebbs)

What do you think BooBoo? 🙂
