Docu-drama Tardis Console Arrives at Dr Who Experience

Docu-drama TARDIS console materialises at Doctor Who Experience

The Doctor Who Experience – home to the biggest official collection of Doctor Who props, costumes and sets in the world –celebrates the latest new arrival at the multisensory attraction in Cardiff Bay.

The replica original TARDIS console which will feature in the much-awaited BBC docu-drama focusing on the genesis of Doctor Who – An Adventure in Space and Time – is on display from today in the mezzanine section of the building.

The console was originally designed in 1963 by BBC designer Peter Brachaki (with valuable input from Barry Newberry) and was piloted by the first Doctor as portrayed by William Hartnell. It soon became a design icon and set a basic template which can still be seen in TARDIS console designs to this day.

Gleaming white, with a hexagonal central console and illuminated circular indents in the walls, this TARDIS interior was scattered with objects from the Doctor’s travels – including an elegant Ormolu clock and a Sheraton chair. In the very earliest episodes, it included a huge hexagonal device on the ceiling next to the console and other separate banks of instruments, including a ‘fault locator’.

The TARDIS console (which will be piloted by David Bradley who will portray the first Doctor in the docu-drama) was displayed at Comic-Con Paris in July 2013. It will be on display to all visitors at the Experience throughout the summer.

Tickets can be booked at www.doctorwhoexperience.com and prices start from just £13 for an adult and £9 for children.

TV channel ‘Watch’ broadcasts various episodes of modern Doctor Who, I think more or less every day.

Seeing as this is the 50 Anniversary of the show, it would be fantastic if the BBC created a TV channel created specifically for Doctor Who, broadcasting old and new episodes, talk about upcoming events and merchandise etc etc.

They could name it ‘WHO TV’, but then again, someone might mistake it for the band ‘The Who’, so probably best not. Thou anyone else reading this comment with suggestions for a name for such a TV channel would be awesome to read 😉

Yeah, my sister told me about it recently, and today, Spencer Kelly of the BBC series ‘Click’ also gave it a brief mention.

      It’s brilliant 😀

How nostalgic. I bet the people who helped bring this console to life, never imagined that it will still carry an iconic significance in 50 years.

      Very true 😉

Pity that the director of ‘An Unearthly Child’, Waris Hussain, admitted on the DVD for the very 1st Doctor Who story that he never really liked the original Tardis console room set.

He felt that it was put together very quickly by designer Peter Brachacki, and that the original console lacked in anything technological, but also stated, as you yourself did have said, that the design of the console has indeed become iconic 😀

well that’s just plain stupid, there’s only a two bar railing – anyone can jump over and steal that type 40 tardis!

I assume that the railing is more a safety feature than a security feature; given the Time Lord technology already seen in the programme, security would be far more complex than that.
