Comedian Frank Skinner to star in Doctor Who

Comedian and TV host Frank Skinner to guest star in new series of Doctor Who

Room 101 host Frank Skinner is the latest name confirmed to guest star in an episode of the new series of Doctor Who this Autumn.

Skinner says: “I love this show. I subscribe to Dr Who magazine, I’ve got a Tardis ringtone, a five-foot cardboard Dalek in my bedroom and when I got the call saying they wanted me to read for the part, I was in the back of my tour bus watching episode three of The Sensorites. I am beyond excited.”

He is currently touring the UK with his stand-up show Frank Skinner: Man In A Suit, alongside presenting the Saturday Morning Breakfast Show on Absolute Radio. Skinner previously appeared in the one-off Doctor Who 50th anniversary comedy homage The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, says: “It’s no secret that Frank’s been pitching vigorously to get into Doctor Who for a while. He’s been volunteering to be ‘third monster on the left’ as long as I’ve been in this job. But now, in Jamie Mathieson’s sparkling script, we finally have a part that can showcase all of Frank’s famous wit and charm. Hopefully he’ll get out of my garden now.”

The episode is written by Jamie Mathieson (Being Human, Dirk Gently), directed by Paul Wilmshurst (Strike Back, Combat Kids), and also stars David Bamber, Daisy Beaumont, Janet Henfrey and Christopher Villiers.

Other guest stars confirmed to join Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in the new series, which will air on BBC One this Autumn, include Ben Miller, Tom Riley, Keeley Hawes and Hermione Norris

Huh. The sensorites… Not the greatest hartnell episode in the world, but bold enough to get a reference in the new series.

Still, cannot wait for season 34!!! (Series 8 for non-classic fans).

I like room 101 his well funny! But people have complained before bout comedians being in doctor who before.”i didn’t want it being a comedy show” i like some comedians guess starting in tv shows as long as they don’t make the show silly.

Can you remember the last time DW hired a Comedian…Peter Kay…one of the best comedians in the UK…who played possibly the worst part in DW history (that includes the numourous awful celeb appearances in the 80s…even Beryl Reid). That said I have far more confidence in the current production team when it comes to quality than I did with the RTD era.

Love to see Russell Howard in the show some day. He could have played a pal of Rory’s if Arther Darvill was still in the show. Russ could have played a guy who fancied Amy.

Franks my favourite stand up comedian but I know what your saying regarding stunt casting. Depends on the part. Beryl reid and even joan sims were odd casting choices but I love those stories now as much as I did back in the day.

I am really in two minds over this one. Okay, Bill Bailey was fine in one Christmas special, Alexander Armstrong, in the same one ( and the voice of Sarah Jane’s Mr Smith). They can use comedians at certain times if used sparingly. However as main character stars, I really don’t know. I like Frank Skinner; racked my brain to work out what he’s acted in before. Can anyone clarify that one?
