I think in the first set of 12 regenerations the Doctor could and would only be male. I believe this the same of the Master. But during the ‘Time War’ people like Rassilon and the Master were resurrected. They and others are gifted a new set of regenerations, only this time, Time Lord technology has now made it possible to not only change face, but also gender. We know Missy is from the Master’s new regeneration cycle, and we now know the Doctor will be female from his new regeneration cycle. The original regeneration cycle doesn’t allow for gender change. It’s the next cycle of regenerations that allow and enable it. This is just a theory, but it would go some way to answering why the Doctor is now female, and hasn’t been before.

In Hell Bent, the General said that her previous incarnation was the only time she had been a man. This may suggest that a change of gender isn’t actually all that common for Time Lords (so gender isn’t fluid as it has been suggested by some) and they tend to go back to their original gender afterwards. Also note how the guy next to her assumed the General would still be male. Though this is of course only going by one scene in the worst series finale of the show it does mean that the Doctor regenerating into a woman despite being a man in all his previous incarnations does make sense.

I like this theory lots. what I thought originally was that the more regenerations a time lord goes through the more likely they are to change gender because each regen could causes slight altering of their core DNA allowing for more and more change. And after 12+ regenerations the possibility to change gender increases.

In ‘The War Games’ at the Doctor’s trial, the Doctor is clearly only shown Male faces. Clearly at this point in Time Lord time, gender change wasn’t possible. This is a more recent occurrence and development, maybe something developed on both Gallifrey and Karn.

Fair point about The War Games. Good theory then.

      July 18th, 2017 - 12:54pm

It’s only a theory. But all I’m trying to do is give people a reasonable explanation as to why the Doctor is now female, but hasn’t been before. A new regenerative life cycle clearly comes with new abilities and wider changes. The Time Lords have clearly been a dominate male domain for centuries. Later events clearly made them realise that a Time Lord needs connection to it’s male and female side. Maybe they felt a better and varied balance and approach would be better to defeat the Daleks and end the Time War?

Sure Moffatt will come up with an explanation in the Xmas special . I wouldn’t be surprised if she forgets all her previous incarnations altogether And sets off as if brand new.

I hope that it her companion is male, it is a young, attractive male rather than a bumbling one. It would be nice to see a companion that I found attractive, as other male fans have had that for years.

I cant except the 13th doctor as a woman. Woman work better as companians. I think give it a series and watch the show crash and burn. Having any poster or picture of all the doctors with the 13th doctor on will be like playing a game to spot the odd one out. Master to missy and now male to female doctor i dread to think whats next. K9 to kitty the robot cat probably. Wonder if chibnull is beginning to write his book on how to ruin a classic tv series.

    • Gareth

      July 19th, 2017 - 11:13pm

I felt sometimes they were leading the doctor. Some of them are strong characters like martha before she went to torchwood. No one can really say woman arent represented well in doctor who they had the perfect balance male doctor and female companion. It shouldnt be a female companion because their needs to be a balance. We live in a fair society boys need role models to.

After a lot of thinking I decided, its new and something different and it could be one of the best things to happen to doctor who. To the people who are not on board with this, it was going to happen sooner or later. The Doctor will not always be a female so just wait, even if it might be four years.

Want to add that I just feel the Doctir has been male all along ans if he can change genders then maybe he can change species too and why not regenerate into a helpful lassie dog.
    Just kiddin people

But really I am disappointed this iconic show will not wntertain me and my family like before.

If want a female Doctor Who – then do a spin off of a MS Doctor or something.

Do not change the main character that has held our attention for fifty years.

    He is what he is.

Of course it is just a show so hardly matters. LOL

You DO realise the irony of the phrase “Do not change the main character” when referring to The Doctor? Then again, you did just compare a woman Doctor to a dog… so I’m not entirely sure.

I just totally have no interest in a female Doctor Who.
Wont even force myself to try it.
The new generation will probably enjoy it but after many years of the Doctor being the male Doctor I just like that perspective.
Missy was played brilliantly but I never accepted her as Simm -Master and was so glad he was back in the last show
I am not a PC person so that wont sway me.

Gomez is a very fine actress…but the character of Missy ‘poppins’ is pretty awful! Yet she’ll be back next series to face off against this new ‘alternate universe’ timelady….Sonic umbrellas and hair curlers at the ready! Oh it’s going to be…

People seem to want this one both ways. They’re saying that a female Time Lord doesn’t affect the character in any meaningful way, whilst also arguing that a five-decade break with tradition isn’t a gimmick.
But if it isn’t a gimmick, then why did Chibnall only want a woman for the part? If gender doesn’t matter and it’s not a gimmick? Why audition solely for a female?
The answer is of course that it’s a gimmick. Why it’s the very definition of a gimmick. The decision defies all logic unless the casting choice was intended solely as a gimmick. Because ‘gender doesn’t matter.’ So if gender doesn’t matter (i.e. it has no intrinsic value), why audition only females?
“A gimmick is a novel device or idea designed primarily to attract attention or increase appeal, often with little intrinsic value.”
    That’s why ^

He can still have preferences. Maybe he just has a really clear plan of where he wants to take the show. From other interviews on the subject, this would definitely seem the case. He’s been said to have a “Five-Year Plan” for the show that includes risks. In my opinion it seems very obvious that Chris Chibnall has a vision of what he wants to do. Which is very reassuring, as many of Moffat’s flaws stem from a lack of long-term planning, resulting in various disappointing solutions.

    • Tim M

      July 17th, 2017 - 11:55pm

Chibnall has a ‘Five Year Plan’?….He better write the best he’s ever written then. At the moment, I think it will be lucky to last 5 episodes. As I’ve said previously, I have no problem with a female Doctor. But like anyone cast in the role (male or female), I question the suitability of that actor in the role. Now I know Jodie Whittaker is a fine actress. But I really can’t see her as the Doctor. The part played by whoever needs a degree of gravitas. I don’t feel that with her. It feels more like a light weight Doctor. Diet Doctor even. She certainly wouldn’t have made my list of potential female Doctors. I hope I’m proved wrong, and if she is written well then there is a chance.

      July 18th, 2017 - 10:49am

From what Whittaker said, it sounded like Chris Chibnall headhunted her to play the new Doctor. It might not be a case of ‘defo gonna be a woman not a man’ rather ‘I think this person is exactly what I want for the role’.

Talk about unlucky number 13!! Sorry but this has ruined it for me and my 10 year old son. He doesn’t even want to watch the Christmas special as he doesn’t see the point with knowing how bad the ending is going to be. For one it shouldn’t even be a female come on people time LORD!!! And if you are stupid enough to have a female why such a dull one. I mean you only have to watch one episode of broadchurch and you can see how much little personality this woman has. She was the worst charcter in the whole thing. This is the end for us we will not be watching and hoping next series we get rid and come to our senses and get a time LORD!

Indeed. Jodie Whittaker isn’t the obvious choice for an ideal female Doctor. There are many other women more suitable. It’s a pity in some ways that Michelle Gomez played the Master/Missy. She would have been an excellent choice of Doctor. Toned down performance of course.

Although do not want a female Doctor I think that is a little unfair prettyinpink, she needs to be given a chance to show what she can do and then we can really make our minds up.
The more I hear about this decision the more it becomes a clear gimmick, but we cannot do anything about it now so as far as I’m concerned I will give it a go, I’ve watched this since I was a kid in the early seventies. If I don’t like the new direction I will will stop watching but as much as I have argued my case for the Doctor staying male long before this shoe horned change I will not give up on it yet, she has the chance to this fans mind at least.

I don’t think the Daleks should be in Jodie Whittaker’s first story. I would have the Weeping Angels in her first story. So long as Moffat allows them to be used and written by someone else. They are a modern and popular classic monster. Unforgivably underused during Capaldi’s run.

That could work. Good, well-known monsters which haven’t been overused recently (e.g. the Cybermen have featured prominently in Capaldi’s era) and it gives the Daleks a slightly longer break so their inevitable return makes more of an impact. I’d like a big Dalek series finale in which we don’t know the Daleks are returning – like in series one.

The episodes Chibnall wrote aren’t exactly full of timey wimey cleverness or complex plots if you think about it. In 42 the day was saved essentially by throwing the enemy out into space, hungry earth/cold blood- sorting out differences and nice alien allowing others to escape and power of 3 just had the doctor blow up the ship at the end to save everyone. They all seem like quite easy endings rather than the cleverness we are used to if anyone gets what I mean

None of Chibnall’s stories have been classics though. Unlike Moffat during the Ecclestone and Tennant era. But perhaps Chinbnall will prove to be a better showrunner. He’s certainly already made his intentions felt by casting a female Doctor. He obviously went to the BBC and said this was his plan as showrunner, and goes someway to explaining why Chibnall felt the BBC might not agree to his proposal, and was surprised to find they welcomed it.

I really hope it lasts for one more series, then it gets cancelled, is this desperation by the BBC to try and get good viewing figures. Surprised after the last few years of who, being a shadow of it former self, it hasn’t been cancelled already. Better to have quality who or no who. BBC quality control has all but disappeared and just leaves inadequate people to run the show. Such a shame. Being a life long fan I now feel I am reliant on big finish to produce good new who, ( so far everything they has done has been top quality and never let the fans down like the BBC has)

Think about this for a moment. Chris Chibnall is not only taking a big gamble casting a female Doctor. He is also putting his reputation under increased scrutiny. I never thought Chibnall was a gambling man, but there’s a lot riding on it. He better write some of the best scripts he’s ever wrote. My only worry is that it could easily go wrong. Then when they look back on this period of the show, it would see Moffat put the nail in Doctor Who’s coffin, and Chibnall hammered it in.

To me, The Doctor is a mixture of Mr. Chips and the prophet Job. He’s a quirky ‘Aspy’ kind of guy; an eccentric British professor. That’s why I’ve really liked Capaldi in the role. Almost as good as Pertwee. The problem with casting a female into the role is that all of those behaviors are most commonly found in males, not females (for example, two thirds of folks on the autistic spectrum are male, myself included). If Ms. Whittaker can play The Doctor as that slightly unempathetic, eccentric and sometimes very cold individual, then good luck to her, because if she can pull that off, she’ll deserve a BAFTA. If on the other hand, she tries to play The Doctor as a yummy mummy or as a feminazi, then for me the show is dead and buried.

For me its a case of the Doctor in the past 12 years hasn’t been the main character, the strong female companion has. She’s the one we follow, she’s the one we learn about and see develop, we experience the adventures through her eyes. Now that the Doctors a woman, I’d assume the companion will be male, (To me, it balances better on screen to have a male and female acting opposite each other in DW) which will probably mean we’ll now follow the strong male lead, learning about him and how he adapts to meeting this mysterious women who can travel in time, so I don’t think the Doctor being a woman now means we’ve got a strong female lead, I think it now means we’ve lost the strong female leads and now it will become more male.

I hope she does well and I hope this works. I am apprehensive, only because if this doesn’t work and it fails, it will fail massively and could jeopardize the show. If Doctor Who was to be cancelled again, I can’t see it recovering this time round.

Colin Baker’s Doctor when ( He’s ahem has came out in favour of this) regenerating from Peter Davidson’s had the line: “Change my dear. And not a moment too soon.” As well as referring to the Davidson incarnation as being “unstable”.

They could possibly do a similar thing here; the 13th regeneration has proved unstable forcing regeneration sooner than usual into the (male) 14th.

“Change. And not a moment too soon. She was A Doctor. I am THE Doctor.”

      2. February 1984: the day the show went on “hiatus”. The BBC tries to kill the show.
      3. The day Colin baker got unfairly sacked
      4. The day Patrick troughton took over. Believe it or not his casting was extremely controversial at the time and wasn’t well received at all

Some non doctor who bleak infamous sci fi days
      5. The day that tripods was cancelled. Seriously not doing the final book BBC?
      6. The day Blake 7 ended. What the hell was that ending
7.Roger Blake gets killed off. You can’t carry on Blake 7 without roger Blake
      8. Survivors getting axed without resolution

I could go on with some American shows (Star Trek and firefly axings being just 2 examples) but I think I’ve mentioned enough. Sure some aren’t as shocking as the announcement yesterday but at least there is a show next year. Be grateful of that. Some of these infamous days mentioned didn’t get another series or was lucky to get another one years later.

Well the whole regeration lark started because of Bill Hartnell”s health at the time. Agree especially about the Tripods but for good or ill this has SEISMIC implications for the longest established Sci-Fi show in the world.

casting a woman is worse than the show being pulled for 16 years and potentially never coming back? Don’t think so. At least there is a guarantee of a show till at least 2020. When it went on hiatus there was no guarantee that the show was ever coming back. The show was dead as a tv series at that point. How is a woman being cast more infamous than a cancellation because it really isn’t.

I think it would have probably have been too easy, if it was another man. With it now being a woman, it means the change is harder to go through, there is more things to discuss and to accept with this regeneration. Of course she is still the doctor and I bet within half an hour of her first appearance she will have won most people over. She will still have the same relationship with the TARDIS and her surroundings and I don’t think a character that does an awful lot of running would wear high heels, she will be practical & pragmatic as the doctor has always been. I think the publicity shot actually says everything about her, she has look of the weight of the universe is on her shoulders and every since of the word it is, as an actor & as the doctor to carry the role and the change over to a new era of Doctor Who.

Doctor who is a show that constantly reinvents itself and the inclusion of a female doctor is no acception. The only thing that I ask is that the doctor remains with a British accent. The only thing.

I can accept a female Doctor…But Chibnall…Don’t even think about changing the Tardis Police Box, or changing the theme tune! Otherwise it will look like a JNT publicity stunt come true!

I reckon changing the Police Box into a thinner, more Classic-esk Box would go down a treat with most people. And I think the titles are going to change. I mean, in the Moffat era they changed it 3 times, so for Chibnall not to do it, it would be a bit weird.

A the end of the day you’ll never please everybody..I love Capaldi,I think the current series has been the best since “Old Who”,creepier with more of a Gothic feel about it..there were times during Tennant & Smith’s era when it felt like there was far too much emphasis on the sidekick & we were watching the Doctor in the middle of an episode of Hollyoaks.
I wish I was the “show-runner”..I expect most fans wish they were as we all have our own ideas of how it should be..we now just have to wait and see..it may just turn out to be amazing….

Just read the whole Jodie Whittaker interview and it appears she was going to get the role given by Chibnall all along? He asked her to audition for it at the beginning of the year!
So I am not convinced one bit she was the best actor for the part, I simply do not believe it now.
Two words come to mind……shoe horned.
I will still give it a go though, not giving up yet.

Steven Moffat always said that he only ever wanted Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi!

Yep she was the only choice from the start for Chibnall’s ‘alternate universe’ version of the character…
