Costume Revealed! Peter Capaldi’s Era Officially Begins

Peter Capaldi’s era officially begins

The Doctor has a new look as Peter Capaldi’s era officially begins. In a picture released today by the BBC, Capaldi can be seen in the costume that will define his time as the Twelfth Time Lord in one of TV’s biggest roles. Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Dr. Marten shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.

Commenting on his costume, Peter Capaldi said: “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.” While lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added: “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”

Filming for episode one of series 8 began earlier this month, after 10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first much-anticipated glimpse of Capaldi’s Doctor. Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, commented: “Peter Capaldi’s Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume. It’s sharp, smart and stylish – The Twelfth Time Lord means business.”

Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

I’m thinking its too similar to Matt’s last outfit. I mean is the 12th Doctor really gonna be like “Ooh these clothes will never do I need something much better!”, and then settle for that when it looks practically the same?

Still could; they had to show something for the toy fair and they only showed 10 figures, whereas recently there has been 11 or 12 per series. They could have had an early glimpse at the costume and already started work on the prototypes.

AND, there’s always the unannounced figures released in the TARDIS set…

Yeah. Even if it’s a super rare, which is unlikely, it would still be nice.

I hope they find a slow-paced and inventive way for him to find it, like Matt did. Sometimes, like Tom and Sylvester, they just ‘happened’ to stumble across a costume that they kept.

It’s…not bad, but I think a longer jacket would have suited him better. As it stands, it looks like someone took the ruffles off of Jon Pertwee’s costume. It doesn’t look bad, in fact, I think it looks pretty good, but I just can’t help but feel it’s missing something, like a hat or a longer jacket.

Actually, the more I look at this costume and think about it, the more I like it. Matt Smith’s costumes were whimsical and out-of-this-world eccentric, like Tom Baker. It’s nice to go back to something, while still being eccentric and Doctor-y, could still be normal and blend into the background.

WOW! Very Pertwee! It has the frilly shirt the reed under his coat but he would look good with a black top hat, cane and a cravat!

What do you think of my suggestions?

Yes just realised that. But if you look closely it does look like frills but obviously just a crease

have to admit not that mad on it, but i think it will suit the character well. part of me thinks he should’ve had 11’s purple coat and that 11 should’ve kept the tweed, but i think this will be good for Capaldi

It’s a cross between the skinhead fashion (the real skinheads, not those that became part of right wing movements) with the crombie and DM and the Mod fashion with the buttoned collar and V neck jumper/cardigan. I like it.

Brilliant, I love it. It just feels like it needs an extra something… Fells like anyone could be wearing it whilst walking through the streets, needs something to set it apart. Hat, tie, cravat, pocket watch, anything… just a little more… Doctorishness.

It is a fact that every Doctor so far has worn a tie, bow tie, cravat or celery at some point.

Cravat on the pictures Clive shows to Rose in “Rose” [of the Titanic, etc.]; still counts.

It looks like he needs a sonic, cape, coat or other kind of extra. I expect the waistcoat, shirt or jacket may change throughout the series, or else there will be some sort of addition like a short scarf or pocket watch.

Brilliant that they have gone for a sensible look. No gimmicks and durable enough to fit any situation. For some reason the lining reminds me of the 3rd Doctor, not a bad thing. Bring it on!

I wasn’t too sure about it at first and was thinking it was too normal, like what Eccleston and Tennant wore, but looking at it again, it feels very Doctor-y without being too whimsical or out-of-place, like William Hartnell’s costume.

After Matt Smith’s Doctor, I think the character needs a rest from wearing bow ties, as the bow tie was Matt Smith’s gimmick. I wouldn’t have minded seeing a longer jacket, though.
