Costume Revealed! Peter Capaldi’s Era Officially Begins

Peter Capaldi’s era officially begins

The Doctor has a new look as Peter Capaldi’s era officially begins. In a picture released today by the BBC, Capaldi can be seen in the costume that will define his time as the Twelfth Time Lord in one of TV’s biggest roles. Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Dr. Marten shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.

Commenting on his costume, Peter Capaldi said: “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.” While lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added: “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”

Filming for episode one of series 8 began earlier this month, after 10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first much-anticipated glimpse of Capaldi’s Doctor. Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, commented: “Peter Capaldi’s Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume. It’s sharp, smart and stylish – The Twelfth Time Lord means business.”

Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

If he left the coat open it would be perfect 🙂

Just so we get the facts right, Peter Capaldi is NOT wearing Dr Martens shoes. They are a pair of black smooth leather brogues made by Loake exclusively for The British Boot Company in Camden. Mr Capaldi bought them in the shop recently. If you want to take a closer look go the BBC (that is British Boot Company!!) website http://www.britboot.co.uk

The look… Different and exciting, stylish but not too flamboyant. The clothes give him an air of dignity and class that is quite suited to the role… Personally, I would be happy with a wardrobe like that for myself. A longer coat would work but might have the effect of making him look too twee. Well played and I also love the boots.

I like it overall – I could do though with a longer jacket/coat.

I think he should undo the top button on the coat, I think it would look better.

All it needs is… A little colour. It has the red but that’s only underneath. He needs a pin badge or something I think.

    Overall: Doc Martens are cool

      January 28th, 2014 - 5:33pm

That is a tough one. You have correctly identified the worst “costume”, the 9th Doctor. It is not even a costume. and is just atrocious when compared alongside the others, particularly in the many multi-Doctor collages. At least all the others are not everyday outfits.

McCoy is missing – probably in the bottom half.

Bear in mind that Pertwee and Baker had noticeable variations on costume, but I guess their “overall look” is the same.

      In my opinion:
      1. Matt Smith’s (2010-12)
      2. Tom Baker’s (1975/1976-77)
      3. John Hurt’s
      4. Matt Smith’s (2013)
      5. Sylvester McCoy’s (The TV Movie)
      6. Paul McGann’s (The Night of the Doctor)
      7. Jon Pertwee’s (Various)
      8. Tom Baker’s (1978-79)
      9. William Hartnell’s
      10. Paul McGann’s (The TV Movie)
      11. Patrick Troughton’s
      12. Sylvester McCoy’s (1987-88)
      13. Peter Davison’s
      14. Christopher Eccleston’s
      15. Sylvester McCoy’s (1989)
      16. David Tennant’s
      17. Colin Baker’s (It was way too obvious for my style, I’ll admit, but even he hated it.)

      Shoot! I forgot Capaldi’s and the final Baker’s! I’d put Capaldi’s between Tom Baker’s (1978-79) and William Hartnell’s, and Tom Baker’s 1980-81 costume between Davison’s and Eccleston’s.

I don’t think The Monitor was being mean to Colin Baker, rather the outfit which was forced upon him.

I can answer that well it is all down to the 50th really

Due to the 50th that had to take the usual filming spot for the Xmas special so the Christmas special had to be filmed when the series would normally be filmed meaning a later filming time for series 8 meaning a later air date

      So blame the 50th

If the ring is part of his Doctor’s look, it would make Peter Capaldi the 4th actor to play the Doctor to actually wear rings, the others been William, Patrick and Jon.

I think I can imagine him taking the coat off sometimes etc when flying the tardis and slipping it back on when off to save the universe, like Pertwee did.
I am normally a little nervous and worried about ‘new’ doctors, but this time I am not and I’m sure Capaldi will be superb.

I like the simplicity of the costume to match a more mature Doctor (in age). I really think they should limit or get rid of the sonic as a regular feature in the show now. It was hardly used in the Classic series and I think by getting rid of it temporarily at least it would be a nice nod to the past as well as creating more challenges for a new Doctor.

Totally agree about the sonic – there is the argument that the Doctor would spend ages getting out of locked rooms, but surely that would be the Doctor’s challenge. Don’t end up in one!

Delighted with the choice of P.C as Doctor but only HoHum on the costume. Whilst I welcome the nods to Pertwees garb I would have preferred a darker, more gothic style (a cross between Pertwees dandy and Count Dracula !!)
