Empress Of Mars. Written by Mark Gatiss and directed by Wayne Yip.

The Doctor, Bill and Nardole arrive on Mars, and find themselves in an impossible conflict between Ice Warriors… and Victorian soldiers.

Time to think about the overnight ratings. I reckon ‘Empress of Mars’ will be an improvement on last weeks. So I’m going to say 4.6 million.

Honestly, I don’t mind Mark Gatiss’ scripts as much as some fans do. With the sole exception of Sleep No More, which I do appreciate as a worthwhile experiment but it simply didn’t work in my opinion, I think all of his episodes have actually been consistently quite entertaining. Not classics at all, but certainly entertaining TV.

And yes, that does include Robot of Sherwood. Despite its flaws, I do remember enjoying it. The Doctor literally fought Robin Hood with a spoon!

I also don’t expect Empress of Mars to go down as a classic (if it does, great, but I don’t expect it to), but I do hope it will be another example of an enjoyable Doctor Who episode from Mark Gatiss.

Oh, and I think The Crimson Horror is underrated. 🙂

I loved robot of sherwood and thought it was better than most of the dross served up in series 8, and agree none of his episodes are classics but all watchable

Indeed. Especially in the same week that the Ice Warriors return. As it was 50 years ago he appeared in Doctor Who in ”The Ice Warriors’. He will be best remembered though for his constant appearances in ‘Last of the Summer Wine’, and the voice of Wallace in Aardman animations ‘Wallace and Gromit’ R.I.P

Very sad, yet another one gone. He’s great in the ice warriors, but I think I’ll always remember him as Wallace, and of course clegg in lotsw always watchable and one of the most distinctive voices on TV. R.I. P.

A grand actor and from what I hear a lovely man. When I was a kid he was the voice of the Rat on wind in the willows. Very distinctive voice and a sad loss. RIP

I’m looking forward to ‘The Empress of Mars’. I’m in agreement with Mark Gatiss, who considers the Ice Warriors to be the third best monsters after the Daleks and Cybermen.

I love how there’s a sort of “of mars” trilogy now,
    Pyramid of Mars
    The Waters of Mars
    Empress of Mars

Probably just a small scene at the end to keep the plot arc going or something similar.

Yes the ice warriors live in hives, a storyline established in the Virgin novels 20 odd years ago.

The ice warriors never really had their own music. Besides which in classic who the original cybermen music was used both before and after tenth planet for other stories. If I remember rightly it was in the space museum and I’m sure it was earlier as well. To echo other thoughts as well I think considering the London events of last night what music is used on a TV show is hardly any important matter. My thoughts to those who have suffered in London and Manchester…

I’m sorry that this comment has nothing to do with the episode at all.
But having seen the news today I just want to wish that everyone in the Whovian community be vigilant and stay safe wherever you are.

What a very nice thing to say on a popular site like this…. its a shame the Doctor is fictional, as im sure if he was real he would do his best to sort our world out.

I certainly hope this episode is better than the only other Ice Warrior episode of revived Doctor Who. Cold War ranks as one of my least favourite Doctor Who episodes ever.

This looks Mad! In a good way of course! I don’t want to seem critical of the past few episodes because I have really enjoyed them in the most part but I will be glad to see a return to the single episode format again next week.
