Sneak Peek at Brand New Tardis Interior

Sneak Peek at Brand New Tardis

The BBC’s Doctor Who has revealed a sneak peak at a brand new TARDIS that will debut in this year’s Christmas special, The Snowmen. The second TARDIS for Matt Smith it will be the first TARDIS for new companion Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman), who makes her entrance on Christmas Day at 5:15pm on BBC ONE.

The new set was designed by Michael Pickwoad, the show’s production designer, and will be home to the Doctor and Clara as they travel through space and time when the adventure continues in spring 2013 with eight epic episodes.

With thanks to BBC Pictures.

Returning to screens on Christmas Day, it’s all change for Matt Smith’s Doctor with a new costume, a new hat and minus Amy Pond. Here he talks about what fans can expect from this festive treat and family tradition.

“Lots of snow and a rather good villain.” Matt is chatting enthusiastically about this year’s Christmas special, The Snowmen. Set in a Victorian snow-covered England, the episode opens with the Doctor feeling more ‘bah humbug’ than festive, as he struggles to get over the loss of his companions the Ponds.

“He is slightly removed and not at his best,” explains Matt. But after the Doctor meets a feisty young governess, Clara, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, do we see a change in the Doctor? “You get to see a different side to him,” Matt explains. “She is a very different to Amy Pond. That is the great thing about this show,” he continues, “reinvention – it keeps me as an actor on my toes!”

As well as seeing Matt Smith’s Doctor for the first time without his old companions, Matt will be sporting a new costume, complete with top hat. “It is a bit like the Doctor meets the Artful Dodger,” says Matt.

So can we expect to see a period of grieving following the loss of the Ponds? “Grieving has its place,” says Matt, “but it is important to show that and then propel back into adventure!”

And that is exactly what this Christmas special does. Matt reveals that this Christmas the Doctor will embark on a dangerous adventure – a quest that leads him to Darkover House, where something sinister is lurking.

As well as guest starring Tom Ward (Silent Witness), Richard E Grant features as this year’s villain, Doctor Simeon. “He was a delight and brilliant at being villainous. Some actors are just made for the show and he was one of them. And he looked wonderful in Victorian garb,” says Matt.

Now a family tradition, Matt is chuffed to be part of the Christmas special. “I love being part of them. Family TV on Christmas day is a great tradition and Doctor Who is at the heart of that.”

So will Matt be making an appointment to watch on Christmas day? “Absolutely, I can’t wait.”

Had an interesting thought earlier today.

As it’s the 50th anniversary next year, and seeing as there is no classic series style Tardis Playset for the first 8 Doctor figures, perhaps Character Options should produce a Tardis playset version of the 1983 incarnation of the Tardis interior introduced in ‘The Five Doctors’, seeing as that version of the Tardis and the story which introduced it will both be 30 years old next year in 2013.

I have seen the old Dapol version of the 1983 console, but I think Character Options could produce a much better version of it for the first 8 Doctor figures.

John Smith – Not everyone obviously wants to see pictures of something new like this new Tardis console room design, and that includes me.

Personally I wish they had never said anything about a new Tardis console room design being featured in this years Christmas special, cos it would have been a great big surprise to see it for the first time on screen without any foreknowledge that it’s going to appear, let alone be showed off with some pictures before it turns up on screen.

They should keep things like the new look Tardis quiet so we can all be shocked just as we all was when Jenna-Louise Coleman turned up in Asylum of the Daleks when none of us was expecting that, that’s the whole point of SURPRISE !!!!.

Boobo, DWM themselves published the image on their Twitter feed so it is in no way copying from the magazine and most people who have posted the image have used the one DWM supplied online rather than from the magazine.

Ive seen the image today on the preview page for the next issue of Doctor Who Magazine and I must say it don’t really spoil anything about the new looks.

It’s just a bit of the ceiling and the top half of the new Time Rotor so it’s nothing that shouts “SPOILER !” right in your face.

Doctor Who Magazine does say thou that they will be showing pictures of the new look next issue so buy the time we see the pictures we will have already seen the new look for ourselves on screen in the Snowmen.

new title sequence confirmed for this episode, not sure about a new theme…

      Dr Who 1999 ? – What, seriously ?.

They may as well just keep the current version of the title sequence, but just change the colour and the appearance of the logo like they have done during the 5 episodes of series 7 so far.

As for the theme, I’d just leave it as it is, but maybe add the Tardis engine sounds into it like they actually did for one episode. Can’t remember which one it was.

      December 13th, 2012 - 5:23pm

yea, it is supposed too have some nods to the classic series title sequence. it was confirmed on Den of Geek

      December 13th, 2012 - 5:34pm

I’m curtain it was a new series intro that did actually use the Tardis engine sounds just once. If I remembered which one it was I’d mention it.

As for the new intro, I wounder what they’ve done to it ?.

Maybe it should be like the one on YouTube called –

      December 13th, 2012 - 6:14pm

seen that intro before, and it would be good if the BBC used it. as for the tardis sound affect, it was used on “a good man goes to war” last year. i will find out if any other episode has it on

Thank you DoctorWhom for supporting my case! I really hope they bring the diamond shaped vortex back but give it a New Series twist on it! Or maybe even bring back the faces that they used like in the classical opening titles. That would make my day! I hope they don’t just mean a new version of the current titles, with slightly new titles. Or maybe even something along the lines of this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksVJcues82A

According to a video uploaded on Saturday on YouTube called ‘Doctor Who: Series 7: Part 2 – New Tardis Interior!!!! 2012-2013’ by YouTuber The Fall of the Eleventh –

‘It’s black, with a blue hue from the Time Rotor lighting the room with a red light in the middle and purple lights surrounding it. The Time Rotor looks very similar to the one in the Lodger Tardis’.

So judging by the description, the new look 2013 Tardis will be a cross between the 8th Doctors Tardis and the one which turned out to belong to the Silence.

as much as this is exiting, i do wish the BBC could have waited a few more years before dumping the fine one that we only had for 2 years

True. I feels like sometimes they can’t wait to replace something once it seems old in their eyes.

Ive often felt the BBC logo itself could do with a change, it’s been the same for a little over 10 years since 1998 or something like that.

Seriously you guys, why are you not sure about it? All you can see is the roof! You don’t judge a house by it’s roof. My complaint is that they shouldn’t be wasting their already tiny budget on new tardis consoles and spend it on better stories and sets.

I’m not sure guys, this tardis just doesn’t sit well with me, it states that this Tardis may be smaller than the 9th and 10th doctors tardis, I just hope they remember the tardis is bigger in the inside than out :/

Does it? Doesn’t suggest that to me, in fact I like the look of it! A return to a more traditional interior, maybe?

I like to think that because the Doctor knows that some day he will reach the fields of Trenzalore, and that the first question being ‘Doctor Who ?’ might get answered [but I doubt it 😀 ], the Doctor may have changed the Tardis interior to reflect on his past incarnations and his Gallifreyan heritage, but mixing features from the various console room designs of his past 10 incarnations, with familiar Gallifreyan features such as the Seal of Rassilon, the new series Time Lord seal, and the use of the circular Gallifreyan text above the console.

Just a thought thou, it may not be why his decided to change it.

i think the old one remindes him too much of the ponds, so as he is tyring to get over them, he changed it, and so he forgets about them and continues to save the world and comes out of ‘retirement’!

    • doctorwhoone

      December 9th, 2012 - 3:58pm

That was actually my original thought yes. Maybe the reasons for this change to the Tardis console room is because –

      A) As you said, the Doctor has changed the Tardis interior in order to help him move on from losing them.

      and

      B) As the 50th anniversary is fast approaching next year, the Tardis has been changed to perhaps reflect on 50 years of adventures, or something like that at least.

I don’t know about this tardis its quite inferior to the rest

    • The TARDIS

      December 10th, 2012 - 5:41pm

How is it inferior? I can’t really see where people are coming from with their criticisms – if anything, it’s most aknowledging to the past ones, hopefully with a bit of everything! It’s impossible to judge as of yet anyway, having only seen what is presumably the bit above the console.

This will be good as there is going to be an episode set fully in the tardis, journey to the centre of the tardis, so there will be a whole new setting. All though journey to the centre to the tardis might not be set in the tardis just a guess but the name makes me think its fully set in the tardis.

Hmm, I’m not to sure about this. Change is good but everything seems to be changing for this half series. It also looks as though the TARDIS might be back to the boring grey coloring it used to have… oh well I might be in for a surprise.

Although I don’t mind change in Doctor Who, in fact I like it, I tihnk it’s a disgrace really that they’re changing the interior of the TARDIS now. 😛 I mean, the 2005 TARDIS was there for 5 years. The current TARDIS started in series 5 and hasn’t even made it through all the way of series 7. It’s been the TARDIS for under 2 years. 😛 It hasn’t made it’s mark, it’s more like it’s a pit-stop. And I don’t like that. 😛 What do you think Booboo?

I think the new tardis is a bit smaller, so maybe the new studio was smaller and couldn’t fit the old one in, so had to build a whole new one, instead of just reducing the old one! And there is a pic I’d it in the DWM next week I think!!!
