The Daleks Invade Westminster Bridge – Video

Filming for An Adventure in Space and Time continued this morning on Westminster Bridge in London

News from the BBC website

The Daleks in London, earlier this morning!

The Daleks invaded London earlier this morning and resistance was useless – insofar as it was impossible to resist the striking sight of the Doctor’s iconic enemies swarming through the capital!

But their presence was not part of a plan to enslave Earth – or at least that’s what the production team was telling us! The cast and crew of An Adventure in Space and Time were there to recreate some of the most memorable moments from Doctor Who’s early years – the scenes from The Dalek Invasion of Earth where the metal monsters imperiously glided through London, gloriously framed against the backdrop of famous sites like the Palace of Westminster.

Back in 1964 the photos of the ‘invasion’ became instant classics and over the years the imagery of those episodes has been referenced and updated on several occasions. But this is the first time that a production team has attempted to faithfully replicate the 1964 shoot using Daleks that were unique to that single adventure. The results look set to be stunning, as you can find out for yourselves when An Adventure in Space and Time – a one-off drama exploring the genesis of Doctor Who – debuts later this year.

The official BBC website will be posting a video shot on location later today.

I dunno if anybody has mentioned this yet but they could get the guys playing William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton to play the 1st and 2nd Doctors in a new muti-Doctor episode

@steampunk doctor, he means the people playing william hartnell and patrick troughton in this docudrama to play the parts that hartnell and troughton played themselves in a future multi-doctor story

Seeing as Raymond P. Cusick has died, I hope this documentary drama will now be dedicated in memory of his, seeing as he was a part of Doctor Who from the very beginning.

I wouldn’t be suprised if there was a dedication, as the producers are also big fans of Dr Who which is why it’s been such a pleasure to be on this job.

there will probably do loads of dedications in the new series , especially as Raymond Cusick has died.

I am looking forward to seeing this, and it is great that they are doing this but, the plungers are not long enough, the discs are too small and the domes are grey! plus the lights are painted on!

They look ok to me, nothing wrong with them as far as I can see.

Far as I’m concerned they are perfect replicas of the original 1964 used props, and don’t forget, the story ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ was in black and white, so just because they don’t appear to have blue bumps and orange lights when featured in the series, didn’t necessarily mean where completely devoid of colour when they was filming the story.

Tssk Tssk… the eyeballs should have a thicker black ring around them too and the necks are a tad too long.

Hmmm. You’d think the BBC would know how to commission a real 60s Dalek, wouldn;t you…. (cough, cough).

Maybe if they’d paid Raymond Cusick what they should have paid him in the 60s for his classic design, he would have come back and done this batch for free.

Tardis’nt, the lights are not painted on, the domes are Vauxhaul silver, the plungers do extend to far longer, but yes, the discs are too small. But since I had 3 weeks to build 4 daleks from scratch, I think I did ok. 😉

Oh, and surely you should have noticed the bumpers are wrong? As they had to be able to double up as both Mk1 and Mk2 shawcrafts, compromises where made. :p

I did mate, and I am driving the one you see the Assistant director running alongside! Chance of a lifetime, so I could not pass it up. And yes, the lights should probs be white, but a design desision was made, that they look better orange, as shown on the cover of ‘invasion of earth’ DVD. And thankyou Booboo, I am quite happy with the results, even if they aren’t perfect. 😉

I can assure you that as smooth as it looks from the outside, it was not so elegant looking to see us scrambling about inside!! 😉 And yes ‘No.4’, we all did mate, was glad to have 3 really enthusiastic actors to power my other Daleks, you all did bloody great!

      February 19th, 2013 - 8:24am

The Daleks Death – The Daleks lights and disc on their back is the same as it was on the original props for 1964’s ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’.

The lights where no doubt orange in that story, it’s just that the story, as Esterath pointed out, is a black and white story, so while it appeared black and white on screen, the actual colour that would have been seen in 1964 was infact orange.

It’s the same case with the original Tardis console prop, it was painted a pale green, but no fan knew that until the show went into colour, says so in a book called ‘Doctor Who – The Tardis Handbook’ by Steve Tribe.

    • DOCTOR WHO ONE

      February 19th, 2013 - 10:21am

Well I can’t seem to find any colour pictures taken in 1964 when they was filming the original scenes of the Daleks on Westminster Bridge, but if you own the Dalek Invasion of Earth on DVD, the lights on the Dalek on the cover are also orange, so clearly it’s not an error made by the people who built these new reproductions of the 1964 version of the Daleks, it’s just that Doctor Who was filmed in black and white back in those days, so while the lights on the original 1964 Daleks where infact orange, they just appeared white on screen, same the Tardis really. Everyone in the 1960’s knew the Police Box disguise of the Tardis was blue, but it looks looked somewhat grey just cos it was black and white TV for Doctor Who back in those days.

An artificially coloured photo is no more proof than the DVD cover is not. We decided they looked better orange as they do on the DVD cover, as we also heard that origionally the dome lights were car indicators, so again….orange.

On Doctor Who Online, they say an actor called Reece Shearsmith has been cast to play Patrick Troughton / The 2nd Doctor for Mark Gatiss’ ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’.

Funny, I thought this documentary drama was only supposed to be set during 1963 in the months leading up to ‘An Unearthly Child’ being broadcast on Saturday 23rd November 1963, not what came later for Doctor Who after 1963.

Well, at least it aint a Nazi Germany Swastika, people get very touchy about that, like about a year or two ago, the Sun Newspaper mentioned about a Dad’s Army game being taken off EBay just cos the packaging had a Swastika on it.

Good point but if it was a swastika I think he would rightly be in a lot of trouble. The evil of these regimes should never be forgotten however long ago. Gatiss and Gary Russell are always sporting Communist kistch despite both being involved with the BBC.

What about using David Warner and David Troughton for the First and Second Doctors? David Warner already plays William Hartnell in Mark Gatiss’ Documentary about the shows beginnings, and there wouldn’t be anything that a wig and some Prosthetics wouldn’t do to make David Troughton look more like his father.

As for the issue of the Third Doctor, I already know someone who works for the Reel New Ross Film Project who looks a lot like Jon Pertwee…

Not sure how you can say it sounds sad but looks better then the actual 50th Anniversary special when we don’t even know what the actual 50th Anniversary special even is.

Obviously won’t be something involving all 11 Doctors, that obviously is not going to happen, considering that the first 3 Doctors are sadly no longer with us, and old Christoper Eccleston want’s nothing to do with Doctor Who ever again yet clearly people just don’t get the message when he says he wants no more to do with it. They may as well just do a story with Doctors 5,7,8,10 and 11, a new Five Doctors, with maybe 1 companion per Doctor, say for example Tegan, Ace, Grace, Donna and Clara.

    • DOCTOR WHO ONE

      February 17th, 2013 - 9:36am

And yes I am aware they could do the first 3 Doctors in CGI, but CGI just don’t look convincing when portraying real people.

The only feasible way I could see anyone doing an 11 Doctors story would be either an animated adventure, a comic-strip in either Doctor Who Magazine or Doctor Who Adventures, a novel [with some illustrations ?], or perhaps an audio adventure, with someone doing the voices of Doctors 1,2,3, and someone voicing Chris’ 9th Doctor.

Either that or just play around with the 11 Doctors figure set if like me you own it too.
