IM not saying hurt is the 12th or 13th doctor …hes a future doctor the 36th for all I care the writters said they wouldn’t be only 12 doctors I quote ‘we wont stop because of a episode that happened 30 years ago’. Also att smiths doctor said he could regenarate 507 times

The good present doctor (smith) vs The evil future doctor (hurt) would be a gd 50 year special

    • whofan4ever

      May 19th, 2013 - 8:28am

He said that regenerate thing as a joke and if we think to when river gave him her regenerations she had left then he has + another 11 regenerations but in angels take manhatten the doctor used a regeneration to fix rivers wrist

  • The Geordiemaxter

    May 19th, 2013 - 12:00am

Also, people think hes the 9th doctor

If that was the case and he would have destroyed gallifrey but we know that happened so it doesnt make the present day any different (IT JUST CONFUSES US MORE) from how it is but if it was a future doctor it would affect the present day and would feature in the 50 year special

HOWEVER if he is the 9th doctor the 59 year episode would be a JOKE as it basically just tells us about the time war and would be a waste of a episode

    Guys, Moffat gave a statement on all this before this episode was even released. As part of the 50th he’s bring in Hurt to play the part of the 9th doctor, a regeneration that The Doctor forgot, or supressed the memory of. Which sucks in itself since that means;
    Hurt = 9
    Chris = 10
    Tennant = 11
    Matt = 12

And a the very beginning, it was said that The Doctor could only have 12 regenerations. Can you imagine being Moffat? “My name is Steven Moffat – And I ended Doctor Who!”

    • Big D

      May 19th, 2013 - 9:49am

But isnt he already doing that? I mean, look at viewing figures. Also on a personal note, as a ‘Whovian’ from the very beginning and having attended many conferences/festivals etc, I know an awful lot who have cast aside their scarves and sonic screwdrivers in despair and frustration at trhe way it has gone.

My super smart friend, thinks that john hurt is the 12th doctor (the last according to a episode 30 years ago) that does something so bad he can no longer call himself the doctor…hence matt smith quoting ‘A name is like a promise…he (john hurt) broke that promise. Saying he stopped calling himself the doctor…which implies he must be a future doctor

Personly I prefere the endings that some evil alien tries to take over the world and not some cliff hanger that causes your brain too implode

PLEASE reply your oppinion on my friends theory

My theory is that he could b dr number 8 and 1/2 or dr number 9 but because he broke the promise, he regenerated into christopher’s dr and christopher’s dr didnt want him 2 b included in a regeneration

that’s my teory, it may ot b true

how can matt smith’s doctor (11th doctor according to your friends theory) know the 12th doctor from the future if matt smith’s doctor is from the past?

    • drjakeyoung

      May 18th, 2013 - 11:55pm

no, 13 is the limit. (according to the classic series, but i think they will just ignore that rule.)

    • The Geordiemaxter

      May 19th, 2013 - 12:04am

Don, the doctor is a time traveler so technically he could find out what he does in the future …its like if I could travel time I could find out what I look like in the future

    • No, 8

      May 19th, 2013 - 12:17am

Has it occurred to anyone that Hurt is playing the part of an older 8th Doctor, the role originally played by Paul McGann? We never saw the regeneration from McGann to Eccleston, and it was the 8th Doctor who committed “genocide” during the time war. I doubt the producers would ever show us a future incarnation of the Doctor, as this means they’d forever have this version hanging over their heads…We’ll only ever see the present and the past Doctors.

    • Don

      May 19th, 2013 - 12:24am

Technically yes he can go and visit himself but then if he were to do that the whole point of river song knowing his future and always using the cathchphrase “spoilers” against the doctor would then seem pointless… i think the whole point of her knowing more than the doctor and using that against him shows that he doesn’t know what lies ahead?

    • Dannyboy

      May 19th, 2013 - 12:48am

Everyone is hanging on the idea that the doctor can only regenerate 12 times according to an episode older than me and forgetting that in the episode “Lets kill Hitler” when river song poisons the doctor then realises that she loves him she gives him all of her regeneration energy then that would give him all of her future regenerations meaning that he will have at least another (excluding her 1st regeneration)10 regenerations.. so it could be a future doctor…. going back to an episode “last of the time lords” when the doctor is facing “the master” they have a discussion about choosing names… I believe that the new guy will almost certainly be a past “doctor” as the doctors name is a part of his past and it is hidden.. then maybe this will show him before he “chooses” his name “Doctor”

    • anonymous

      May 19th, 2013 - 7:01am

According to several episodes, the Doctor wouldn’t know a future regeneration of himself. “spoilers!” But, some people have said Hurt might be the Valeyard. I did some research, since I am too young to have watched the classic series, and the Valeyard is an evil amalgamation of the Doctor himself. It is stated that he occurs “somewhere between 12th and 13th regeneration”, according to an episode of the 6th doctor, “the Ultimate Foe”.
Also, Simeon states in “The Name of the Doctor”, at 23 minutes into the episode, “the doctor will have other names. Storm, Beast, Valeyard.” It is also stated in the classic series that since the 6th doctor met the Valeyard, and has knowledge of him: “The memory of the Sixth Doctor becomes increasingly associated with the Valeyard in the Seventh Doctor’s mind, causing the past five Doctors to ‘lock’ the Sixth Doctor’s memory away for fear of what he might become.” Therefore, when 11 says “he’s me… I didn’t say he was the Doctor” makes total sense. That would also explain why his face has never shown up during the database flashbacks, and why Clara didn’t know him.

      May 19th, 2013 - 9:47pm

The Valeyard hasn’t had enough information revealed yet. I wasn’t born until 15 years after the Valeyard was revealed, but I know he is an evil part of the Doctor between his 12th and 13th incarnations. To reveal him would be a huge deal, particularly after only one mention in 30 years and 15 seasons. I have no doubt he’ll be bought back, but now is too soon.

  • Erin

    May 18th, 2013 - 11:47pm

I am also very confused. But he couldn’t be the 13th Doctor because The Doctor can only regenerate 12 times. Meaning if John Hurt is the 9th Doctor, Matt Smith will be the last Doctor. If that’s true, I don’t think Matt Smith is good enough to be the last one, I love him and all but he shouldn’t be ‘The Last Doctor’.
I have no theory, so I guess I just have to wait and see.

    • sephy

      May 18th, 2013 - 11:56pm

If Matt’s the 12th, that would mean he regenerated 11 times? Not 12. Meaning that unless they find a way to get around the whole 12 regenerations thing, there should be 1 more doctor after Matt.

    • anonymous

      May 19th, 2013 - 5:45am

If the Doctor can regenerate 12 times, that means there would be 13 Doctors. Simply math, people. First Doctor was born, then regenerated for the 1st time into the second Doctor, and so on… leaving the 12th regeneration into the 13th Doctor.

There was already another dr from the bbc animated series played by Richard e grant. Aparantly he played a version of the ninth dr in scream of the shalka so maybe the ninth dr was split into 2 or even 3 with John hurt being one of them

  • Don

    May 18th, 2013 - 11:45pm

I like all the theories on how John Hurt might be the 9th doctor and how Matt Smith is then the 12th but i think we are forgetting that Clara just went and saw all the doctors and if you listen to what she says…

Clara : But i never saw that one. I saw all of you. Eleven faces, all of them you. You’re the 11th doctor.

Doctor Who: I said he was me i never said he was The Doctor.

So how come Clara didn’t see him?

    • dean

      May 19th, 2013 - 1:30am

If she went through the doctors timeline looking for the doctor and counting the “doctor’s” then she would never see hurt as the 9th doctor as although he’s the same person he’s not the doctor as it was stated, implying that she would and could only count 11 doctors dislike the idea that he could be the valyard as his previous incarnation on tv shows no remorse and being the great actor that hurt is he showed a depth of emotions in his facial expression that I haven’t seen in years on screen.

Hand ps if he is the valyard it’s always possibility that at some point the doctor is going to have to leave his own timeline and concourse in whovian fashion once the exit has been made clear the valyard will know the exit…but hope he’s the 9th

Also, if the Doctor that John Hurt is gonna play is the 8th Doctor after he’s ended the Time War and committed genocide, the meeting may take place after the Time War. The entire war was time locked, meaning nobody could get in or out of the war. Whether this applies to the Doctor’s timestream is debatable, but it may mean Clara couldn’t visit the Doctor Hurt plays.

John Hurt is rumoured to be playing the forgotten 9th doctor. They are saying something happened in the time war which caused the doctor to forget this incarnation, making him think that eccleston was the 9th doctor when in actual fact he was the 10th 😀

  • DCW

    May 18th, 2013 - 10:47pm

I have a theory that John Hurt will play the Doctor by his real name which is ‘The First’ John’s character was the 1st incarnation before Hartnell, he is was evil, more evil than the Master! The anniversary will show what evil he did along time ago, in the end of this process he will die and regenerate into Will Hartnell. In redemption and seeing the error of his ways Will Hartnell declares himself from here on in I shall be The Doctor, in shame of his former self, takes his granddaughter and steals a Tardis thus running away from Gallifrey and temptations and responsibilites thus the quote “I’ve been running my whole life” the evil The First did was to break laws of Time etc!, wanting to control the universe very much like The Master does. This would explain why the Doctor always wants to ‘save’ The Master and cant bring himself to kill him because he saved himself through redemption thus becoming The Doctor, the redemption is in “seeing the universe for what it is” “not controlling it” as he said to the Master in the past. The Doctor learns to care and that all things deserve to live even The Daleks, he always wants The Master to see this, why? Unless he has already been down a dark path and learnt a harsh lesson from it! Maybe the lesson is in his process of being evil Susan’s parents was killed? What better reason for redemption and becoming The Doctor!? And taking her away from Gallifrey and Corrupt Timelords. The Timelords did become bad in the end, we know this having seen them, maybe Will Hartnell saw this eventually happening one day another reason for going, Susan won’t become like them! So takes her away. I don’t believe John Hurt Being the 9th, The 8th Doctor fought and died in The Time War but going back to my point of being redeemed could not kill he’s The Doctor so locks The Timelords in a Timelock, alive but unable to do the Universe harm, why? Because they would have gone onto do what The First aka John Hurt did or nearly did which would have been to destroy all life in the Universe! Come 23/11/13 we will see how close my theory is! “Been running my whole life” running from the only evil he fears himself! I feel this makes the most logical sense and why he is universally loathed, feared but loved!

Close, when the 8th Doctor regenerates, it splits into two, he is the 9th doctor but an alternate one who fights in the war, this is only my theory but I think it fits, he broke the name of the doctor because he killed the timelords and daleks ‘without choice’.

  • daryl

    May 18th, 2013 - 10:28pm

    This is what I think:

Something MUST have happened in the Time War to force regeneration from 8th to 9th. SO, the 10th Doctor said that in the final days of the war the Time Lords changed, became desperate. We seen an example of this in the End of Time.

Each doctor never seems to age but maybe near the end of the war the 8th Doctor was so tired, so ashamed of what his people were doing and planning that it changed him, it aged him. And when he ended it he had no choice and he did it in the name of peace as it was the same thing to do as he said today.

And when he ended it he wa so old he just had to regenerate into the 9th. What do you guys think? Please comment!

    • Anonymous

      May 19th, 2013 - 5:44pm

It’s the only explanation I can think of. He’s killed before, but he’s never been so ashamed he was disowned by his future self. He destroyed the Time Lords, Gallifrey, the Daleks etc. because the Time Lords became desperate, so he did it because he ‘had no choice’. Also, the 9th Doctor is an angry version, far worse than the others. This has always been attributed to survivor’s guilt, but did he hate himself more than we thought for ending the war?

      May 20th, 2013 - 8:10pm

daryl that does make sense people who think he is a future version are wrong. But maybe he killed himself because he could nt live with the guilt of commiting 2 genocides.

The mysterious Dr. who at the end must be from the past otherwise Matt Smith’s Dr wouldn’t know who he was? To be honest it would be the death of the current format if John Hurt took over so I expect it will be a two- three show at the Max for John

    May 18th, 2013 - 8:25pm

John Hurt is NOT the real 9th Doctor. If he was then answer me this –

How come his face is never seen between Doctor’s 8 and 9 whenever the new series has featured the past 10 Doctor’s faces ? such as was recently seen in ‘Nightmare in Silver’.

Clara herself said that the current Doctor played by Matt Smith in todays episode [“I saw your past selves, your the 11th Doctor”], and she said so herself that she never saw the one that’s ment to be John Hurt, so either the 12th or 13th who broke the promise of what it means to be known as THE DOCTOR, or John is the Doctor of a parallel universe where all the Doctors look different compared to the ones of our time, and it’s up to our 10th and 11th Doctors of our universe to send John’s one back to his universe in Novembers 50th Anniversary special.

    • drjakeyoung

      May 18th, 2013 - 8:46pm

because those past faces names were the doctor, but maybe the Hurt is not called the doctor, but by his real name (they were called the doctor and maybe this incarnation is called something else?)

    • Matt

      May 18th, 2013 - 9:56pm

Theres a theory hes a suppressed memory of The Doctor, that he was the actual Doctor who killed all the Time-Lords to end the Time War etc, and The Doctor didnt want to accept it, and maybe he tried to remove that incarnation from databases? Unless that incarnation only existed in the Time-War? so only other time-lords and Daleks saw it?

    • Matt

      May 18th, 2013 - 9:57pm

Thus the theory meaning, that the amended Doctor order would be:

      Hurt: 9
      Eccleston: 10
      Tennant: 11
      Smith: 12

The point was John hurt didn’t act like the doctor due to him killing pretty much most the time lords therefore in away he is a doctor but doctor saids he isn’t a doctor as he didn’t act like him so yes John is the doctor but not the doctor we know so making him a kinda 8.5 doctor between Paul and Chris

“Clara herself said that the current Doctor played by Matt Smith in todays episode [“I saw your past selves, your the 11th Doctor”], and she said so herself that she never saw the one that’s ment to be John Hurt”

Yes, but she wouldn’t have seen The Doctor during the Time War because the entire event is time locked…

    • GameChicken

      May 19th, 2013 - 1:18am

      But Hurt would not be the 9th doctor, even if he did regenerate into him before Eccleston, he is not going by the name ‘the doctor’s so he is not the 9th doctor. Eg..lets say he goes by the name bob;
      8th Doctor, regenerates into..
      1st Bob, regenerates into..
      9th Doctor, regenerates into..
      10th Doctor, and so on…

    • anonymous

      May 19th, 2013 - 6:16am

I like GameChicken’s theory. We know this: the Doctor said “he’s me…I didn’t say he was the Doctor”. Also, I don’t think he would have been before the first doctor, because Matt Smith said “the name you choose is like a promise… He’s the one who broke the promise.” How could he have broken the promise if he was before Hartnell? He had to have chosen the name, thus becoming the Doctor in order to have broken it. Plus, he should be in the past, since 11 knows him. In the episode from season 4 “The Next Doctor”, 10 meets a man who is calling himself the doctor and assumes he must be a future incarnation, since he didn’t know him. Some people have commented that he’s a time traveler and could go into the future to meet a new doctor, but the doctor has said time and again, that you can’t know the future because it contains “spoilers.” (references: “Silence in the Library”, “Forest of the Dead”, “The Angels take Manhattan”)
So, either he came in between the 8th and 9th, but not as a regeneration of the Doctor, but as a whole new “Bob”, to reference GameChicken. Another idea, he might be an aged version of the 8th Doctor, so twisted by what he had done in the time war, that he no longer considered himself the Doctor. His face wouldn’t show up in the database references, cause they use the younger face of 8, who hasn’t broke the promise. Besides, in the first episode with Christopher Eccelson, “Rose”, he obviously has just regenerated, because he looks in the mirror, and makes a comment about his new face.

    • Matt Smithy

      May 19th, 2013 - 7:44am

      I believe this:
Matt Smith IS the 11th Doctor, but not the 11th incarnation of the PERSON. Clara says she saw all 11 Doctors and that he is the 11th Doctor, but then the Doctor goes on to say that the name you choose is a promise. John Hurts Doctor must have been the one that destroyed Gallifrey and Skaro, But because of this, he was no longer fit to be called “the Doctor”, therefore breaking the promise. Whenever we see the faces, the enemy has been told to look up “the Doctor”, not the only incarnation he was that used his real name. I believe that John Hurt is technically the real 9th Doctor, and when he regenerated to Chris, he wanted to start fresh again, calling himself The Doctor. Unfortunately, this means The Doctor only has 1 life left D:

I think the operative word here is PART. The Doctor is now in his own Time Stream. He could encounter all his past, present and future regenerations. Therefore John Hurt, John Barrowman or even Mickey Mouse could play cameo versions of all Doctors. As Time is paradoxical, his entry in to his time stream may have been the cause of the Time Wars in the first place (or last place as the case may be)

It would be the 8th doctor if it was him during the Last Great Time War. Otherwise, how would they explain the drastic appearance changes between Christopher and John?
