WOW! John looks too old to be time lord. He is definitely not the 12th doctor … or at least that is what I think. I really don’t think I can wait for next season! I want spoilers for my birthday. 50th anniversary has 10th Doctor and Rose. And Zygons, and Daleks. I wonder what else… Anyway I still want to watch it. keep calm and travel on Doctor!

Why does everyone like Asylum of the Daleks, it was absolutly herendous, probably the second worst episode in the series.
If you think stories like cold war and Journey to the centre of the TARDIS are terrible and you love The power of Three, Asylum of the Daleks and Nightmare in Silver are great, you have an awful taste in doctor who, please just leave! Cold War in my opinion was by far the best in the series!

Anonymous, it’s their opinion. You have no right to tell them to stop watching Doctor Who because they liked an episode you didn’t. My views:
      Asylum of the Daleks: 10/10
      Dinosaurs on a Spaceship: 9/10
      A Town Called Mercy: 9/10
      The Power of Three: 5/10
      The Angels Take Manhatten: 8/10
      The Snowmen: 5/10
The Bells of St. John: 7/10
      The Rings of Akhaten: 10/10
      Cold War: 8/10
      Hide: 7/10
Journey To The Center of the TARDIS: 6/10
      The Crimson Horror: 9/10

tons of people saying that he is not replacing smith, but they seem to forget that smith is looking to leave the series for other interests. looks as if he wants to do Hollywood and movies. typical actor, they have a great thing going and decide to leave it for something better and are never heard from again except for some after school special about STD’s or something.

Matt Smith was only signed for the three series plus specials. Towards the end of that time Steven Moffat apparently tried to convince him to extend his run but Matt apparently felt if he did another series, he’d do another after that and he just wouldn’t know when to leave.

Did anyone besides me think that this might be a set up for a Dr Who feature film about the Time Wars?

    From Dr Who Wikipedia

“In 2011, David Yates announced that he had started work with the BBC on a Doctor Who film, a project that would take three or more years to complete. Yates indicated that the film would take a different approach to Doctor Who,[99] although the current Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat stated later that any such film would not be a reboot of the series and a film should be made by the BBC team and star the current TV Doctor.”

Research project: Between now and the 50th Anniversary special – review the previous storylines and see how many references to the darker side of the Doctor/Time Lords there are?
Starting with Hartnell (‘thoughtfully picking up a rock…’ in the first story) through to McCoy’s Doctor manipulating people (and ‘Silver Nemesis’ being more than just a Doctor). Also not forgetting the Time Lord’s time scoop – plucking individuals from across the cosmos and using them for (lethal) games.
Ecclestone (needing the calming influence of Rose), Tennant (allowing himself to think he can change history with impunity ‘waters of mars’) and so on.

Candidates for who John Hurt’s character is:
Pre-Hartnell version of the Doctor (before he & Susan go on the run)?
‘Time War’ Doctor (older version of McGann – or a missing regeneration?)
Future Doctor – sometime after the Valeyard?

‘Intermediate’ incarnations – already established with the likes of ‘The Watcher – Logopolis’ and ‘Valeyard – Trial of a Time Lord’. Also other Time Lords ‘Planet of Spiders – tibetan monk’s aide turns out to be his future self – Romana 1 ‘trying out’ different bodies before ending up as Romana 2.
And let’s not forget the metacrisis/Gallifreyan/human ‘but not a Time Lord’ version of David Tennant exiled to another universe.

here is an article I found on the viewing figures

According to early overnight viewing figures The Name of the Doctor was watched by 5.5 million viewers on BBC1.

The overnight figures are only early estimates and we can expect a sizeable increase when the final BARB figures are released next week. Unlike the overnights, the final figures also count those who recorded the show and watched it later, making them a more accurate measure of how many were watching.

The Name of the Doctor – 5.5 million (overnight) TBC (final figure)

Nightmare in Silver – 4.7 million (overnight) 6.64 million (final figure)

The Crimson Horror – 4.61 million (overnight) 6.47 million (final figure)

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS – 4.9 million (overnight) 6.50 million (final figure)

Hide – 5 million (overnight) 6.61 million (final figure)

Cold War – 5.7 million (overnight) 7.37 million (final figure)

The Rings of Akhaten – 5.5 million (overnight) 7.45 million (final figure)

The Bells of Saint John – 6.18 million (overnight) 8.44 million (final figure)

The Snowmen – 7.6 million (overnight) 9.87 million (final figure)

The Angels Take Manhattan – 5.9 million (overnight) 7.82 million (final figure)

The Power of Three – 5.5 million (overnight) 7.67 million (final figure)

A Town Called Mercy – 6.6 million (overnight) 8.42 million (final figure)

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship – 5.5 million (overnight) 7.57 million (final figure)

Asylum of the Daleks – 6.4 million (overnight) 8.3 million (final figure)

Note: Overnight and BARB figures do not include iPlayer viewings which have, in some cases, added over 2 million on top of these.

    • Anonymous

      May 23rd, 2013 - 8:42pm

And some people thought the show was in trouble – pah! 7-10 million (with iPlayer) for a sci fi TV show….it’s pretty much unheard of. Even some if the better US sci if shows struggle to pull in half that and the US population is significantly bigger than ours.

I have another theory. I think richard E grant will be the next doctor.

Richard E grant is dr simeon. He then becomes the great intelegence (psycic image). Outside the tardis, he mentioned something the doctor will do, (destroy billions) he then mentioned the valeyard.
After this, he entered the doctors time stream and tried to rewrite the doctor. Clara then entered and somehow, (not explained how) stopped him but we didnt see her destroy him. Indeed clara survived so why couldnt the GI too.
Inside we meet john hurt as the doctor.

I see john hurt as an aspect of the dark doctor, affected by the great intelegence and who will energe to cause mass devistation in the doctors name, (breaking the promise).

now I think that the next episode and the christmas special will be used fighting the john hurt doctor. Then either mat smith will regenerate at christmas (possible, moffat has lied before so maybe we have been told the matt is on board another year to create a shocker at christmas day!) or will spend the next season fighting the GI inside his timestream (tardis exploding involved in this battle)leading to his regeneration at the end of series 8.
now….. I think that during the regeneration, he will beat the GI by splitting the regeneration. Half the regeneration will become the valeyard. The doctor however will be affected by the phycic image of dr simeon. He will look like him, regenerating into richard E grant.
Why would I think this? Cause he already has in the form of the official BBC dr who story, scream of the shakra! Richard E Grant is already the doctor. Explains the valeyard, explains that doctor. We ALREADY have seen a 12th doctor story.

    Makes sense to me.

    What ya think?

    possible?

Great theory, would be really great if it happened. Very neat and nice.
I can assure you but it most definitely won’t happen, unfortunately.
Alas, Grant’s Doctor is to be forever resigned to be merely one the ‘alternative’ Doctors, along with Peter Cushing, Rowen Atkinson, and many others.
At least he’s a fantastic villain.

When Clara read the book on the time war, she saw the doctors name. Does that not mean the doctor did not use the name ‘the doctor’ when he fought.

Also, it said the doctor has a secret he will take to his grave, what if that meant his secret, ‘The Hurt Doctor’ followed him to the grave?

Did I miss something? Why has NO ONE else menioned this????

One minute the doctor was INSIDE the tardis with clara having gained entrance via the secret door, then he was suddennly outside talking to the great intelegence. Is this another wibbly wobbly timy wimy moment like in series 5? There is a huge bit missing from this story.

Its obvious that the wispermen were actually the great intelegence. He moved into a new body at will.
Also the valeyard is a great intelegence inspired doctor from the future or an echo of the doctor/GI. John hurt could be the manifestation of the GI in the doctor, forced into an echo that did horrible things, in the doctors name. He broke the promise. I dont see the time war link for john hurt. The trezladore battle will be the event that happens with john hurt doing the genocide. I wonder were the zygons are going to fit into this. Will the john hurt doctor use them as shape shifters to commit attrocities in the doctors name. Mat smith mentioned PAINTINGS on the johnathan ross show when asked about the 50th aniv. Will the zygons use then as psycic templates to mascarade as the doctor. I wonder if there will be some suprises in the 50th…(cough..cough..paul magan…sylvester macoy..cough cough. )

We keep on hearing the billions the doctor has killed. Would the doctor actually do this? No, its someone doing them through shape shifting zygons to comit acts in the doctors name, in some misguided peace and sanity excuse.

Im sure moffat will throw us a curve ball and catch us all out.

Also, where were The Silence? Last season they were desperate that the Dr didn’t get to Trenzalore, I though Silence was supposed to fall when the question was asked? They were not even referred to.

Also, Clara told the 1st Do which TARDIS to steal, but in The Dr’s Wife the TARDIS said that it chose the DR??

Reading all of these comments baffles me, I know everyone is due their opinion but why would John Hurt’s dr be a dr between 8 and 9 when the dr himself indicates he is a dr from his own future. I’m assuming he is the dr’s next incarnation towards the end of his life, and is the Valeyard or about to become the Valeyard. It definitely looks like the 50th will be a battle in his own time stream however. Being a massive fan of who i can’t wait. But looking at most of your opinions and he is either 8 or 9, then it is more likely an older version of 8, as it was clear that 9 had only just regenrated before the episode rose. But i’m hoping its the Valeyard and he’s the main threat of the 50th anniversary special.

The other theories aren’t that he is an old Macgann or version of Ecclestone – it’s that he could be betweentheatre – a forgotten/hushed up/secret incarnation – since there is that possibility as the series hasn’t dealt with the time war period – he doesn’t specifically say hurt is a future incarnation – that is only covered by the doctor saying the time stream covers his past and future

      May 21st, 2013 - 12:31am

It’s not clear at all he just regenerated. The scene where he looks at his reflection in the mirror does imply it slightly but it’s not definite. You’ve also got all those photos of him on the Titanic etc

    • DoctorWhom

      May 21st, 2013 - 12:31pm

No, Smith’s Doctor does not indicate that he is a future Doctor. If he was a future Doctor how the hell would Smith recognise him? If you watch the episode closely you would see that Hurt says:
“I did it for sanity’s sake” referring of course to the Time War. Hurt’s Doctor is The Doctor who ended the Time War. His is not The Valleyard. People have to accept his is The Doctor.

    • Anonymous

      June 6th, 2013 - 2:30am

To doctor whom, your theory is completely flawed and your proof is completely unfounded to fact of the show… the doctor could recognise a future self by a little thing called time travel…. he goes to his own futures grave and has faced his past self inside the tardis before…. and logic and fact from the show shows that its more likely s future doctor because Clara says she’s seen all 11 of the past regeneration and the hurt doctor wasn’t one of them……. which aims at the hurt doctor being a future doctor and not a past and your idea of proof of the quote “I did it for sanity’s sake” how does this “referring of course to the time war”? How does that quote specifically say it was the time war…..

You seem to put peoples ideas down and promote your own and have very faulty logic and somehow interpret a quote completely wrong and somehow link it to the time war, when in no way does it specifically aim it to the time war and you clearly don’t have an idea of how time travel works.. maybe before you put other peoples ideas down and promote your own, you should check your own theory and check its logic and not put down other peoples ideas who are better than your own. This is a fan page and not a bully page. Please don’t dismiss peoples ideas down because you can’t understand them….

In what way was film wasted? John Hurt is one of England’s finest actors and I think we are lucky he is taking part in this story.

    WHAT IF?:

    The Doctor:

Doctor- mean healer or wise man. The man who saves lives.

The Doctor is all of this as we know but what if Hurt’s Doctor was not this?

Who Hurt, (!! No pun!!), is is simply obvious! You lot are all getting VASTLY too over-excited, conspiratorial, second-guessing and analytical.

I will explain for you all simply who Hurt must be, then:

      1) In the script clearly Smith is referring to the fact that Hurt is a future version of the Doctor, probably from the main timeline, who did something necessary, but so bad that The Doctor doesn’t want it to be done in The Doctor’s name.

In that energy-chamber and tomb, where Smith says all of The Doctor’s selves exist, it is therefore possible easily for any future Doctors to be, such as Hurt.

No other mad, over-analytical, wildly wishful-thinking interpretations as an alternative, side timeline, pre-Hartnell character or the many others posted here by many of you are possible.

      2) Hurt is definitely The Doctor – not like David Morrisey or any other alternative or possible self or past or ‘fake’ Doctor, as the BBC very boldly and definitively stated this in big, proud letters AND at the end of the credits’ cast-list.

That is simply too much proof to undo or rewrite it as some fake, joke or bluff in a future story.

      3) I am very surprised by us meeting a future Doctor, as in my long knowledge of the show this has never happened. Valeyard, dark doctors, whatever…

We have never met a future regeneration before in the TV show until regenerating.

So, this was a very thrilling and huge twist, and an interesting play from Moffatt.

Maybe he/writers plan to take a new approach from Nov/2013 – futures and pasts and presents of Doctors and others all chucked in together much more.

      4) Maybe that will be as they perhaps plan from Nov/2013 to FINALLY bloody tie up – in a series-long, era-ending epic story, like ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ or ‘Key to Time’ – their endless, interesting, hugely frustrating and often stupidly, annoyingly unresolved 2005-2013 references and quotes to ‘Silence Will Fall’, ‘Bad Wolf’, Time War…

      5) If so, I think even more that Hurt is the final, 13th Doctor – who had to do sth awful to finally end the Time War, as it was re-opened – just as in Tennant’s finale, don’t forget.

This is time-travel, so any old baloney get-outs, re-writes and explanations can be used for anything!

Maybe Dalton’s bossman finds a way to get back out of the Time War or maybe to chase the Daleks, if they get back out.

They all fight like hell and nearly destroy the universe, as ever, and Hurt’s, final 13th Doctor has to kill them all to stop uni-destruction.

If so, though: how does Smith’s 11th, earlier Doctor know about this?

Well, time-travel allows the writers to explain and do anything they like, inc’ for a Timelord to know all about his future, after all.

Plus: in this series-closing episode Smith keeps banging on that he can’t go to his own grave, “It’s TOTALLY impossible”, etc etc. The Tardis also ‘fights him’ in this ep’ to stop him getting there.

But, hey ho, they still fairly easily get there to his giant, frankly weird idea and rather bizarrely SUPER-giant phallic, Tardis tomb.

So, a timelord can still just easily get to his death and cross his timeline to even AFTER his death = to his tomb, despite all that and endless references in many earlier ep’s and in pre-’90 Dr.Who, too.

      6) Someone here wrote re: Are Doctor and Master the same? It’s often been thought so.

After Tennant and Simm’s episodes explaining timelords’ childhoods, it doesn’t seem so. It seems they are seperate beings.

      7) But, then, why did Smith call that ‘Dream Master’ in ‘frozen Tardis’ various things that suggest he was probably The Master, esp’ ‘Who else hates me as much as you do?’

So, I reckon that character was The Master after Simms.

One great waste and stupidity of modern Dr. Who is how they often cheat by simply reversing history to get out of a disaster, e.g. end of 2008 series.

But, esp’y how they waste actors and characters, most of all The Master is suddenly revealed in a magnificent twist in YANA – AND he is played by a tremendously evil, fuming, sinister and menacing Jacobi!

What a masterstroke of story-telling and casting! But, then, almost immediately Jacobi is gone.

Plus despite Simms’ very story-rich ep’s, we haven’t really seen much of him before his Master has been binned off.

Likewise Dalton’s excellent casting as Rassilon (or whichever Timelord bossman he turns out to have bloody well truly been!)

      Stop it, you muppets!

I hope they have both Jacobi’s AND Simm’s masters in the 50th birthday ep’. After all, “with time travel you can do, write, explain away and get out of anything!”

      8) I am disappointed to read that only Tennant and Smith – plus now a 3rd Doctor, Hurt – are due in such an iconic ep’ for such an iconic show all about time travel, when many other Doctor actors are still alive – and when such an essential, 50th anniversary story should be one of the Doctor’s biggest battles and stories ever.

This definitely requires The Master, Davros and Daleks, after all – plus Rassilon and the Timelord council back from Time War.

Indeed I reckon this 50th ep’ will be in the Time War, probably resolving it with Hurt’s Doctor ending it forever.

      9) Then in 2014 they will probably via flashbacks give us many hugely enjoyable stories, explaining how it began, what it was and showing us many important events in it.

After all, Tennant’s Doctor kept banging on and other ref’s in his stories often did, too, to many terrible Time War acts of his that caused him to be a terribly tortured and maybe now somewhat bad, evil person.

So, when are we EVER bloody going to get the satisfaction of ALL this explained to us?

      10) Well, I tell you when:

starting in the 50th birthday ep’ with Hurt’s 13th, final, still helpful and noble-aims driven, but terribly violent/vengeful Doctor shown in / explaining many of the key element of Time War and ‘Silence will fall’ and Bad Wolf – the 3 most important storylines in New Dr.Who.

      So, in conclusion:

THIS is who Hurt’s Doctor is and THIS is probably what much of the next two years’ central ideas and stories are going to be…

…and THAT is how a brilliantly clever writer creates a fantastic cliffhanger and keeps his show’s fans rabidly intrigued with thrilled, truly breath-taken anticipation and guessing about the next episode.

So, well done, Moffat! (Or is it Moffatt? Dunno, sorry, pal!)

No offence Mark, but that was absolute nonsense. There were sections that were true enough to the story line but there’s no logical explanation to suggest that he is DEFINITELY a future incarnation; in fact it’s much more hinted toward being a past regeneration. You can stop criticising the people saying he’s a Doctor in between the 8th and 9th because it’s highly suggested; right down to the clothing. Just because you write a novel-length comment with many paragraphs stating contrary ideas, doesn’t make you any more validated in your opinions than anyone else; and in this case you’ve just messed up.

Firstly I don’t know where you were and what planet you were one (pun not intended) when the last two episodes of series one were aired but you clearly didn’t notice that bad wolf was explained in a not so subtle way of 9th doctor regenerating. Secondly I can’t be bothered to comment on everything you wrote because most of it repetitious hot aired nonsense and thirdly I didn’t know you were so close with Steven Moffat that you know his exact plans for the 50th. Enjoy watching it and realising how wrong you probably were.

It’s a popular theory…however the Valeyard is dark without remorse….John Hurts character seemed to try and defend his actions (whatever they were) by implying they were for the greater good….not something the Valeyard would be concerned with. We’ll find out in 6 months.

Also, the Valeyard would be a big character to introduce. He may well be introduced later, but knowing Moffat he’ll leave small clues throughout an entire season. They can’t exactly say ‘He’ll be known as the Valeyard. By the way, this guy introduced half an hour later is the Valeyard’.

  • Wild Wolfie

The β€˜Secret’ is the Doctors name. By revealing his name it reveals this incarnations timestream, that is why Clara could not see this incarnation in the Doctors timestream. This incarnation did something terrible, something that was against everything the Doctor stands for (most likely his actions in the Time War). This is a wretched incarnation that cannot be forgiven even by his other incarnations. In otherwords he cannot forgive himself for his own actions. Thus, he cannot even be called the Doctor anymore as he has failed to live up to the code of the Doctor, the ‘promise’ he has made to himself and others. This means he can only go by his real Gallifreyan name. To know this name is to know this incarnations timestream and what he did. It has to be kept secret because it is the only time the Doctor has failed to live by his promise to the universe, showing that he is not infallible and has a weakness. It could be hidden partly for the shame of it but more likely the Doctor perceives this fallible incarnation of himself could be exploited by his enemies.

I’m not sure…I think his real name being such a big deal and secret was /is a bit a a red Herron….the secret is the incarnation that John Hurt plays….a version of the Doctor that took actions that The Doctor is so ashamed of that it was not done in ‘the name of the doctor’….that’s what the title of the show referred to…not his actual name.

    • Wild Wolfie

      May 20th, 2013 - 3:48pm

‘The name of the Doctor’ is a bit of a sneaky wordplay. It can be taken two ways. The Doctor, like other superheroes has taken an alter ego,for example Bruce Wayne’s alter ego Batman, Tony Stark’s alter ego Ironman and so on. Their alter ego name is more a moral code to live by rather than the name itself. The same can be said for super villians, only in an opposite spectrum to superheroes. They act as we would expect them to act. The same applies to the Doctor, some unknown Timelord’s alter ego. We expect something done ‘In the name of the Doctor’ to be good, because that is the code the Timelord lives by. The problem is we have never seen behind the mask, we have only seen the alter ego. We have had hints that this Timelord had a shady past before he took on this alter ego ‘The Doctor’. What if something was done in the name of the Doctor, his real Gallifreyan name not the title ‘The Doctor’. Are we sure they would be good? This question is a constant torment for the Doctor himself, mainly because he knows what he is capable of and his split personality manifests itself into physical entities each time he regenerates, due to being a Timelord he has less control over it than others, his moral conflicts are as much physical conflicts than they are mental.

They’re going in opposite directions. When they first met from the Doctor’s perspective she died, and this version of River was the one he saved when she died. The version we saw before that was probably approaching the meeting point, where she knows less about him than he does about her.

Rivers soul is in the great library so everything the doctor has done and probably will do should be catalogued in her library, it never suggested the time she was taken from to appear in this episode (only that she’d been dead a long time), and that he believed she should have faded away by now. who’s to say she didn’t appear in this episode from the distant future and why she always knows spoilers πŸ˜›
