Impossible Astronaut Final Viewing figures 8.9m
The Impossible Astronaut Viewing figures
Screenshots from The Impossible Astronaut have been added to the gallery Here.
Final viewing figures show that the The Impossible Astronaut achieved nearly 8.9 million viewers with a massive time shift really showing that viewing habits are changing, this was well on par and even beating some season openers. These figures do not include iplayer.
Overnight viewing figure showed that The Impossible Astronaut achieved 6.5 million viewers.

May 1st, 2011 - 7:33pmWow very good indeed, well desrved and more than average for a season opener, hope ep2 fares well.

May 1st, 2011 - 5:35pmReally pleasing final figures.
If the overnights are now so far out from actuals that they can be out by nearly 30% then they are of little value. It does show that the 6pm scheduling is a big mistake though.

May 1st, 2011 - 5:02pmHaving watched viewing habits changing i was expecting a large time shift – but i have to admit that’s impressive, the overnights are causing more trouble than they are worth

April 28th, 2011 - 9:54pmThe FACT is: Summer time, alot people are outdoors having a good time, making use of the weather when Dr Who episodes actually broadcast. Sadly, this means television gets missed out on. People dont need it when there’s a good time to be had, outdoors.
I think they would be much more better off, should they choose to broadcast at later times, rather than 6.00/5.30 slot. 😐
It would definately have been wiser, a 8.30 kind of slot(it also justifies the fear factor that Dr Who can have on younger viewers), by which time the sun is going down. THIS ISN’T NONSENSE you know!! I speak the truth, the Big Bang and The Pandorica Opens, Series Five’s finale, had bvery low, if not the lowest of that season’s ratings. Good summer weather had to do with it.

May 2nd, 2011 - 5:02pmSo are you saying Doctor Who should be broadcast post watershed, because that would also have a bad efect on the ratings.
NotADalek
April 27th, 2011 - 5:18pmRather low ratings, but considering how the episode was the second most watched programme of the day, they’re not too bad.
Tom Ford
April 26th, 2011 - 8:16amPeople seem to be forgetting that it was the second most watched programme of the day.
Daily P.O.P.
April 26th, 2011 - 12:32amWhile I was worried by the first half being too convoluted and contrived, the Impossible Astronaut ended up being one of the most impressive series openers to date. I think that word of mouth will greatly impact an increase in viewing figures next week.

Doctor Who Star 100
April 25th, 2011 - 6:51pmnot really any one should put it as the best ever because we haven’t seen the rest of the series!!! the others may be better and one of the others may be the best ever!!
river slaps the doctor XD

April 25th, 2011 - 6:18pmWhy do some people say Doctor Who is a scary show? It’s not scary in the slightest.
The Dark Side of the Moon
April 25th, 2011 - 6:47pmNot sure how old you are (Im guessing a teenager), the show goes out 3 hours before the watershed…considering the age range it has to therefore cater for, its probably as scarey as you are ver going to get. Besides…scarey doesnt mean it needs to have blood and guts and someone jumping out with a knife…real scarey is something that plays with your mind…but you have to have one before that will work 🙂

April 25th, 2011 - 6:59pmwell i thought the gas mask bit was scary, we could to with more “shocks” like that
McGann is the Doctor
May 1st, 2011 - 5:42pmGas mask bit? You mean the creepy kids with the… Oh lets not even get into that.
Say, Dark side of the Moon, I heard Steven Moffat mention something about that place: Quote: “If I could, I would [WRITE] all my episodes on the dark side of the moon, and have no one know about the [plot contents, spoilers .etc] until they air on television.” 😀

April 25th, 2011 - 5:58pmGood episode, I’ve uploaded a YouTube video called Unlucky:4+9=13, enjoy!
The Silence are epic! 🙂

April 25th, 2011 - 12:35pmPs i agree with the view that itv is polluting its network with talent shows!this angers me as great show such heartbeat & the royal got taken off!this why we are lucky to have shows such as DOCTOR WHO & torchwood.

April 25th, 2011 - 12:32pmMamy many people will watch it on delay as it was hot sunny easter saturday, the end figures will be much higher indeed, bigger ratings.
The Silence
April 25th, 2011 - 8:42amGood episode, I thought it was well done, the camera angles impressed me a lot, and im not even an HD viewer, then you must of been in for a treat.
Joy was annoying but it wasn’t her fault because she just couldn’t remember.
the silence aren’t that great (so far), in Day of the Moon, i hope they scare the life out of the viewers, (including me), but I wish the ratings were higher, maybe the overall ratings will be at least maybe 9 million, hope so! 🙂
The Daleks
April 25th, 2011 - 11:19amI have to agree with you!
the episode was gr8 but shame about the ratings
The Silence
April 25th, 2011 - 5:55pmI must admit that the trailer gave away 2 much, showing the little girl still alive.
DrWhoTwins
April 24th, 2011 - 9:08pmThe Impossible Astronaut was an amazing episode! It was clever, gripping and a great way to start off the series! The Silence were so creepy, can’t wait for the next episode! 9/10
The episode should have had more ratings though.

April 25th, 2011 - 9:51amI couldn’t agree more!

April 24th, 2011 - 7:08pmif itv didntc feel the need to pollute tv with rubbish talent shows, dw would hav been top, bcos last night was amazing
Callum Metcalfe
April 24th, 2011 - 5:42pmBrilliant Episode! 9/10
Fox Mulder
April 24th, 2011 - 3:18pmSteven Moffat should be ashamed of those viewing figures, if I was BBC exectutive, I would fire Moffat and get Phil Ford to take it over.

April 24th, 2011 - 4:14pmThese are NOT the real figures, they are just the overnight figures. Last year proved there can be huge changes between overnight figures and the final figures. We cannot tell what the final figures are until the series has finished broadcasting.
BBC America
April 24th, 2011 - 5:18pmStephen Moffat shouldnt be ashamed of figures that firstly havent been confirmed, secondly were for a day on a hot sunny Easter afternoon when its shown far too early at 6, and unless the people who didnt watch are somehow clairvoyant I cant see how they decided it was too bad to watch BEFORE it started. Lets decide on important things like was it a good story and screw the ratings because we get far too obsessed with those.
booboo
April 24th, 2011 - 5:59pmThe oversights are starting to cause more trouble than they are worth to be honest, they are becoming less and less meaningful, final figures should now include time shift and player downloads which are watched with 7 days., its obvious that even in the last 5 years viewing trends are changing
simeytimeywimey
April 24th, 2011 - 6:29pmdid you not notice the glorious weather? i had to get my kids in from the glorious sunshine to tell them dw was on,now think how many kids were out playing and didnt come in,families taking advantage of the weather and going out for the day etc -the majority of these would have recorded/sky plussed it or watched it on i player at a later date.Me and my family are out for the day for episode 3 which being the pirate one we as a family of dw fans are looking forward to-but we shall sky plus it and watch it later-which is exactly what a lot of people i know have done this week it doesnt mean its suddenly not a very watchable programme and overnight figures mean nothing, also if you go on bbc i player home page yesterdays episode is the most popular so DON’T PANIC!!!!
The Dark Side of the Moon
April 25th, 2011 - 6:54pmHahaha, thanks Fox Mulder, thats the funniest thing I’ve heard in ages…you’ve really made me laugh.
Just a reminder to everyone…getting the highest ratings doesnt mean its the best show…has anyone watched Britains got Tallent…its a joke of a show but it appeals to the masses…Doctor Who is a Sci Fi show…I think the BBC have enough knowledge of the industry to know that any genre specific show will never compete with the likes of Soap operas and Talent shows…but the fact its pulling in that many millions is amazing! SM career at the BBC is very safe.
Peter Thomas
April 24th, 2011 - 2:27pmI would of said 6.5m is very poor, I really enjoyed the 1st Episode but given that it had a lot of advertising it should of got 9m at least
MrWho
April 24th, 2011 - 2:14pm“Deny this reality!”- The Fourth Doctor
Anyway, thoughts on the episode, very well done 🙂
Prouduction values made it seem the more powerful.
The Silence are sly, clever and scary, how clever that when you look away from one, you forget you’ve ever seen it, at all.
The way that they killed Joy was rather brilliant, Joy did annoy me at times but wasn’t her fault, she just couldn’t remember.
When River went down to the tunnels and saw the silence, i found that creepy and when Rory said, “there is nothing there” it felt so wonderfully chilling, that there was dozens behind him, and he forgot.
The viewing figures could of been better, the final viewing figures will be around about 8.9-9 million, around that number of views.
Can’t wait until, Day of the Moon, looks even better than the Impossible Astronaut, the cliffhanger at the end was brilliant, why was the girl in the suit? I guess we’ll find out next week. 🙂

April 24th, 2011 - 12:05pmRatings seem a little low…
jason
April 24th, 2011 - 2:02pmdue to britain’s got talent being popular and on a itv1 envening slot, it seemed inpeareable to estimate dr who winning.
Not that im being a bad fan, but thedr who episode was very good, great to watch, but the ratings are sure to rise, to at least 9.5 million
Jason 🙂

April 24th, 2011 - 2:14pmNot at all. The fact is a massive proportion of people watch it on delay. I did. And I’m a massive fan. I watched most of my programs on the i player and equivalents last week. And Who i Sky plussed. That will be 8 million by final figures.
The Dark Side of the Moon
April 25th, 2011 - 6:57pmWho cares? The quality wasnt low….but it was on ITV…they need ratings as they depend on commercials. Thats why the BBC can put quality first…DW whould have to slump down to less than 2 million before the BBC start worrying.

April 24th, 2011 - 11:52amThis was a fantastic episode and 6.5 million viewers is very good, this figure will undoubtedly rise as it a warm saturday and people will be watching it later on.

April 24th, 2011 - 11:13amDid u no? Voyage of the Damned is the most watched episode of the New Serieses. With over 13million
Sean
April 24th, 2011 - 9:53amThat’s a good rating… last year episode 1 had an overnight of just under 8 million and it was a new Doctor. It also rose to 10.08 so hopefully this 6.5 will rise a lot too 😀
Peter Thomas
April 24th, 2011 - 2:33pm9m is good, but 6.5m is very poor. Perhaps the final figure will b 7.5m. Well, we live in hope
