I really want to go, but I’d have to pay for travel, I’d have more than likely pay for somewhere to stay, all on top of the ticket price! I get £20 a week for attending college, which I’m so lucky to get, and with it, I have to eat everyday, and buy college books and so on. I have a job, but its closed for winter… How the BBC really think that any person that doesn’t have a spare £200 lying around can even begin to afford this is beyond me.
    It’s such a shame.

I think the bag of souvenirs could have been better. When you see what celebrities get at their bags at fashion shows and oscars. A laminated pass and a souvenir ticket. Is that it!

I’m travelling from Ireland and spent money on two tickets, money that I barely have but I’ve missed so many conventions due to being very ill and uni exams. There’s no way I’m missing this. The person I bought the other ticket for isn’t going now, so I’m going alone and wasted £104 on a non transferrable ticket. I’d better be getting a bloody good show. I’ve waited too long for this and time is too short on this earth. Shame I won’t get to see the TARDIS set, missed that opportunity to book it. I think the atmosphere of just being there and being back in Cardiff might just be enough tough 🙂

I wrote to the convention and they told me the name in the ticket doesn’t matter as long as you’ve got a ticket in hand

      Dear Elizabeth

The name on the ticket will not make a difference on the day. As long as the bar code is in full to scan.

      Kind Regards

Does anyone know what is happening to the photo shoot and autograph opportunities. I thought I read that people had been refunded and it would be issued on a lottery basis. This kind of convention does not happen very often. If I were a child I would pool birthday and Christmas presies etc. to get there.

Sophia Myles[Girl in the Fireplace]says she hopes to be there. To be honest i think it’s very expensive, even more so with the travel unless you live local.I met David Tennant and Catherine Tate last year at ‘Much Ado’,Peter Davison after ‘Legally Blonde’ and Sylvester Mccoy after ‘Little Shop of Horrors. It was more personal and less rushed.Of course, kids want the whole experience but it doesn’t seem totally suitable for them.

Perhaps its best not for families with children to go as there will be lots of single men wandering around, they are the only ones who can afford those prices and still need to eat for the rest of the month, who will be telling each other about the episode from february 1973 that Jon Pertwee starred in and the Tardis had the 34521-b bolt on the console when it should have been the 34522-c ones. That his cravat was upside down in one shot and that Matt Smith, well he’s no Tom Baker is he. Yawn. Just hit em where it hurts, stop buying the magazines and leave the toys on the shelves.

Honestly, I don’t get why you all think it’s so expensive. It’s not much more than a box set. You can get to see a lot of the people who work on the show, the man who plays the current Doctor, and others from the cast and production team, and if you book early enough you can go to visit the actual TARDIS set. What other Who Con gives you that? I think it’s a Doctor Who fan’s dream. It’s fantastic. There are plenty of other conferences to go to during the year that are great fun and less expensive. And I really don’t think they will be rolling the money in, there aren’t that many seats.

To be fair its the families with kids that are complaining, not individuals, its a family day out that will cost you £400+ with travel etc if you have 2 children – a lot more than the box set you refer to

I have no idea why you are complaining about the cost to families. My kids love Doctor Who nearly as much as me and they would be bored silly at this. Talks and prosthetic demonstrations? Snore.

Give me the unoffical conventions anyday that are warming up to a younger audience. Treasure hunts… monster hide and seek… making chocolate Daleks from liquorice and a Mini Roll. Half the price, twice the length and A LOT more suitable.

I am an avid 12 year old doctor who fanatic and was desperate to attend the convention. But having just seen the price it would cost me 5 months pocket money to go and my mum says that I would have to go alone as there is no way she could afford a ticket. Thanks for disappointing a child on his birthday BBC. I hope you are pleased with yourselves.

Yeah,a hundred quid entry fee is a pretty disgusting display of greed .Was glad to have some event in cardiff, but this prices all but the wealthiest families with kids out of it completely .I’d expect a ride in the tardis to a time of my choice for that at the very least.

£99 is awful lot of money for a convention which is a shame. When I was considering going I only found out that Matt Smith was off and fully booked for sessions. So instead i am off to see Colin Baker in Sheffield at £40.

Unrealistic price, very unfair to expect families to pay this much. I thought Dr Who live was expensive, but at least it was worth it. This on the other hand is explotive. Not happy, and by the way the Christmas Special wasnt so special….

Lots of marketing aimed at children, toys, annuals etc at this time of year, convention even mentioned in the Dr Who comic! I don’t think it’s fair to promote this to children when the price is clearly out of the reach of most families.

My son is begging me to take him to the DW con, we took him to the exhibition in London in october which cost a small fortune as we stayed in london for a couple of days, now it would cost well over £500 if all 4 of us went. But unfortunately kids don’t understand that money doesn’t grow on trees, he also thinks that if he goes he will definately be able to meet Matt Smith, better buy in a big box of tissues to wipe all the tears when I have to say sorry we can’t go.

Sorry but this is disgusting. I was trying to arrange to take the family on the Sunday as my step daughter would absolutely love go. At 13 she can’t go alone and can’t take one without the other. Unfortunately due to the cost of the tickets we now can’t go and I have a very upset 13 year old and 43 year old. £416.20 plus travelling etc. Think the bbc are just being greedy now. If it wasn’t for the fans spending hundreds upon thousands on dvds, posters, toys and other memorabilia the show would be nothing. Would have been nice if the bbc and production had of thought about that before setting ridiculous prices!!!!

Seriously? £416.20? That is a total rip-off! But the whole idea of it i find a bit odd anyway, paying (lots of) money to SEE SOMEBODY? Thats like… selling themselves to Doctor Who! They’re normal people, yet you have to pay to see them!

      January 9th, 2012 - 4:11pm

Why don’t you search around as I am off to a convention in Sheffield – Where Colin Bakers going – costs £40. I know its not Matt Smith but you get 2 free autographs at this convention. And there is a discount price of £25 for children.

  • Heather

    November 22nd, 2011 - 4:02pm

God God – I attend four-day conventions that cost half the price of this! I met Stephen in a pub in London with my friend in a wheelchair and sat talking to him for half an hour (he even came outside to us because I couldn’t get the wheelchair through because of the crowds, and it cost me a pint. I saw Matt at the Proms – that cost me a fiver. And for a £12.50 ticket to see Hamlet, I got to speak to David Tennant and Patrick Stewart. One pound off a ton plus half again for a meet and photo? You must be joking!

Shock and disbelief turned to anger and disgust. How can the £99 cost be justified – especially for families?

Its not even like a holiday or anything! Not that you’d be able to afford one after that! They’re gonna make loadsa money, coz little kids who are fans of DW are gonna beg there parents to get tickets, which will probably end in another one of Britians -what do you call it- um, where there money goes down??!

  • Jemma Bell

    November 13th, 2011 - 12:15am

Overpriced is an understatement! I can’t justify paying that amount just for entry! I am actually disgusted by the amount that is expected for people to pay out, add everything up and it’s a small fortune. compared to the conventions I attend each year this is the most ridiculously overpriced con I have come across.
The fact it’s not a family con (and advised that it is not child friendly) is poor form! I mean Doctor Who is and has always been a family show!!, clearly this convention is being aimed at the rich upper class fan’s…not your everyday fan like myself. This is utter greed on the BBC’s part.
I will be giving this a miss and I will stick to my unofficial conventions. Word of advise to the BBC look into how much regular, well known and popular conventions are supposed to cost. I’m sure showmasters, tenth planet events and starfury etc can give you some tips.

I see, Booboo, so that justifies is then does it? At a time when families are struggling to cope and at the same time explain to children why they can’t have the holiday, birthday, Christmas they once had, the BBC dangles their favourite show and character in front of them and racks up the price. Not true to Wales or the people who have been so proud of this production.
