New series is great TV. You can pick holes in every Doctor Who episode there has ever been, but why bother. Just enjoy.

You know the first thing I thought of when I seen the Fat Belly Daleks was the Apple iMac ad:

I’m an old school Who fan and can remember the show from way back, in fact my first recollection of Doctor Who dates back to probably 1968-1970 with the transition from Patrick Troughton to Jon Pertwee, I was maybe 5 or 6 and I can remember hating Pertwee for the first episode of Spearhead from Space, by the second I’d forgotten Troughton. Pertwee is my fave Doctor of all time, classy, eccentric and above all a charmer.

The original series was meant to be family viewing and did include some hard hitting ideas, although let down by poor effects and acting in some cases, the 80’s saw John Nathan Turner destroy the show with his stupidly camped up stories and style, the show was cancelled and it’s this period a lot of British people remember as being childish and pretty rubbish to be honest.

There’s some debate (and complaint) about whether TV is being dumbed down in the UK, personally I think it is. For example the newer incarnation of Doctor Who (the series’ featuring Eccleston/Tennant et al) are allegedly written with 8 year olds in mind, for which blame Russell T Davies, and a lot of people do find the stories childish and lacking in depth but it’s the program makers who insist on catering to the lowest common denominator not the viewers clamouring for brain dead rubbish. (or am I just being overly optimistic?)

As I see it there are two main weaknesses of Doctor Who right now, firstly little or no depth (dumbed down), the stories are too short and usually pretty shallow in terms of development and storyline, some are even cringe-makingly silly (Love and Monsters), secondly there is a strange propensity to bowdlerize history and social tensions.

For example look at the Daleks in Manhattan story, the black guy was a leader in Hooverville, race was a much bigger issue then than it is now so why act as though there was no racism? Or Tooth and Claw, the werewolf story, where Rose talks to Queen Victoria in a ridiculously familiar manner, in effect she mouths off to the Queen of England, the Ruler of the British Empire, the most powerful ruler in the world (at that time), Rose would have been lucky to get off with a flogging!

However some stories have been very good which is what keeps people watching, the Empty Child and the Girl in the Fireplace come to mind here. Oh and I hated Blink, silly idea. A race of predators that can’t move if anyone or anything is looking at them! Come on, its a camp fire horror story at best.

(So the next story doesn’t bode well.)
This new season? The program makers can’t decide what they want, historically inaccurate nostalgia, childish threadbare plots, mixed in with dialogue a child won’t understand e.g. “We are the new Paradigm”.

Matt Smith as the Doctor is okay so far, which is to say I’m pleasantly surprised that he’s not as bad as I thought he’d be. Amy Pond though, what’s going on there, is she the Time Lord? She’s definitely brighter than the doctor, I can’t pin down exactly what it is but she really bothers me.

The stories are not good, very disappointing, very silly in fact. Why silly? Because the stories should be broad enough to appeal to children /and/ adults without being childish, they should be sci-fi drama with some depth and a real sense of urgency and suspense, stories that will be taken seriously by the cast not run through as a jolly caper or the story/plot being superficial fluff.

I don’t see a future for Who if things don’t improve.

It could have been great with winston and the daleks but was tbh rubbish plot and i feel sry for matt smith having to try and act to such a rubbish plot.

Don’t get people’s problem with the new daleks. They look beautiful. However I do think it was a shame the new ones exterminated the old. Poor Russel T Davis!- “Yes! We are inferior!”
But, Omega, I love the cybus cybermen (seriously- I’ve got posters of them all over my wall) but the cybermen have always changed during Who history. They’re the most redesigned monsters. Surely we want to keep the tradition? Let’s just hope the’re not multicoloured though!

Really enjoyed 1st episode, and have really warmed to new companion Amy Pond. Thought the 2nd (The Beast Below) was poor, not seen 3rd yet (recorded) as kids wanted to watch BGT. Not sure about Matt Smith yet, still early days – he’s okay, but great? hmm. Agree with some comments about plot etc, is getting a bit too hard to follow and silly.

It isn’t fair to compare the programmes as they are so different, I think DW loses my kids interest quickly (9 & 11) as they find it difficult to follow (they adore the Sarah Jane Adventures tho’)

I think Ray Cusick (original Dalek designer) would be horrified at these new shaped coloured Daleks which although taller, also appear obese! Russel T Davies went to such great lengths to uphold the shape of the original Daleks and to make them more metalic looking and invincible. I feel that Steven Moffat is destroying what Russel has created and selfishly putting his own stamp on absolutely everything!
I almost feel that there is a power struggle between Steven and Russel -as if Steven has to prove that his series is better than Russel’s.
Silly really; he should embrace what Russel created. I bet he changes the look of the Cybermen in some way as well.
Having followed Dr Who from the Jon Pertwee era to present day, I feel that history is repeating itself with the BBC making financial cut backs on the series which reflects in the production value as compared to the Russel T Davies era. Instead of wasting money on new Daleks, they could have put that money into the sets instead. Just hope the series doesn’t become too corny or silly as I think Matt Smith is a great Doctor!
A die hard, but disillusioned fan.

Ok, we have seen about a quarter of the shows this season… I for one am very disappointed. The way they are treating the Doctor, it seems that the Doctor most have lost a lot of IQ point during the last regeneration, and for some reason they want it to appeal to kids in stead of adults. With this in mind maybe it should move to Disney like the horrible New K9 series.

The choice of having a stripper companion doesn’t make since once you realize that they are going for the kids market. Again what the heck are you guys thinking.

The final insult to me was the washing machine Daleks. DO you have to Freaking redo everything thats Doctor Who and if so why or why are you making things so freaking lame?

What made the 2005 series work great was that it was an extension of the doctor who universe. Davies did not recreate everything from scratch to please his ego. Wish the same could be said about Moffat.

While we are on the subject of Daleks…the Daleks are no more, they are going wiped from time and space. The Time lords destroyed them and then Rose in goddess form destroyed the rest.

Whats next do the Timelords get to make a come back too?

In the future when we look back at this series it will be rated lower than Colin Bakers and Sylvester McCoy ones and if we are real lucky it will be like Peter Cushing’s doctor and mostly just forgotten about.

Great atmospheric story. The military feel reminded me of stories from my youth such as ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ (1975). Not sure about the hump on the back of the new Daleks. Apart from that, a superb episode!

I thought it was very good – the episode moved along at a very fast pace – which is a good thing with some moments to slow things down a bit to catch your breath! Not too sure about the new Daleks – slightly weird shape at the back. Never watched Britain’s Got Talent- just some odd clips showing various acts – its not exactly intelligent television viewing – won’t ever be watching it in the future either.

Doctor Who is a niche TV show, many people dislike Sci Fi whereas everyone likes watching people make fools of themselves on TV, that’s why Britains Got Talent will always have higher ratings, nothing Doctor Who can do to change that.

Just for the record I watched both 🙂

Love the industrial strength Daleks…seemed to be an over elaborate plot to obtain the Doctors testament though, and the story peaked too early. Still the best programme on tv by a mile.

Not surprising people watch the rubbish on ITV after last night’s dalek episode. Absolutely awful! Complete hogwash. Matt is good, just the production, direction is letting him down big time. That story made no sense at all. People will say “oooh it is for children, you know!” Yeah, right, so let’s dumb it down for the kids.
