If River is the little girl and she can regenerate, why didn’t she do so when she died at the end of Forest of the Dead ?

Same reason she didn’t let Ten hook himself up to the Library core, it probably burned out her regenerative ability!

Overly convoluted stories with little plot except for furthering the LOOONG story arc covering TWO SEASONS. Cybermen turned into paper soldiers, one man destroyed a whole cyberfleet! Gone are the Tomb of the cybermmen vibes, all invincable and scary, instead rory stands there acting all tough and for what? Big on genocide though isnt he at the moment. The blue guy could have told them were amy was all along. A sontaran who needs to serve penance? Were is the TIME WARRIOR vibe gone? A lesbian silurian in victorian england? come on…..No, Old Dr who wipes the floor with this season. Now we have to wait THREE MONTHS to find out whats going to happen. after waiting a year already to find out who the voice was…(we still dont know)And this in a kids show.

After masterpieces like GIRL IN THE FIREPLACE, EMPTY CHILD and BLINK….I am VERY disapointed with this season. The last season was ok. (new daleks, vincent, dream lord….cool stuff) This season though….all fizz, no substance. LOVE DOCTOR WHO…not impressed with this season so far. (river song bieng amys baby…so predictable…no suprise there. )

I couldn’t agree more I have been watching Dr Who since it began and I am a terrific fan. It was great seeing kids that used to watch it write the episodes in the Dr Who tradition. This last episode whilst a great spectacle had me saying WHAT???? is this all about, the baby thing I find distasteful I am sure most mothers would agree; and as a primary school teacher the story lines are now so complicated and intricate it leaves the kids quite puzzled no one can discuss the stories anymore. Do they consult their young (and old) viewers. I suggest they should!

No, entirely the opposite, this series has been too good for words!! If you are 90, OK. But once I tried to watch the 5 doctors and fell asleep!!! What does that tell you? THIS SERIES HAS BEEN THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with lepter. I was waiting for the “game changing ending” but it limped out with a rubbish reveal for River Song. There was no point to the Cybermen in this story, it could have been any race. Rory was completely out of character, he has been a complete wet wimp since the start. Amy, I am so bored of Amy, who in all honest is in my bottom 3 companions along with Adric and Rory! A Sontaran “Nurse”? Really? WHY???? A Silurian in England in the 1800’s? If so, why did she not raise the rest of her race and wipe the “vermin” from the face of the earth. All the “enemies” were out of character. As for the headless monks, like the Silence before them, they were average! No real scare factor. And what was with the use of the TARDIS corridors on Demon’s Run? Another thing I am really getting sick and tired of is this stupid obsession of calling “Jenny” the Doctor’s daughter! She isn’t, she is a clone used from the Doctor’s DNA! And while we are on the subject of family, why have Moff and RTD before him decided that the Doctor no longer has family? What about the Doctor’s Granddaughter? If people really want to see scary Doctor WHo then watch Pyramids of Mars or Terror of the Zygons! Come on Moff, you can do so much better then this less than average story

Steven Moffat should have left the production to Russell and his team. He wrote some great stories but he has been responsible for making the show a lack-lustre,damp squib, vastly inferior, unrecognisable shadow of what it was. Bring back RTD, sack Smith and let’s have some emotion back. I have been a big fan all my life but hardly bother watching now.Far too many changes for changes sake-even the colours look grey and boring.Rubbish!!

      June 6th, 2011 - 6:40pm

Hey steve, you’re 17, your too unhappy for anything to seem good. In your view, everything stinks. So that leaves your opinions biased and not worth listenig to.

Everything has to be wrong, from the view of cybical fan-boys like yourself. Why can’t you accept anything? Because you have no capacity for imaginative viewing, or understanding this Series. And by the way, Pyramids of Mars I was NOT all that keen on.

AGMGTW was hardly a less than average story, that’s just what you think. The episode was a thrill to watch, and alot of people thought so aswell, general viewers and fans alike.

      June 6th, 2011 - 8:36pm

no, im not 90. Some new who is up there with the best, like I said, girl in the fireplace…awesome. Mat smith is finding his feet and doing a good job. Its the story that I have a problem with. Too many obscure events with no explanations. What was the debt the sontaran and the silurian had to pay? Why can river song come and go from a maximum security prison when she pleases? Whats the wierd tardis all about? Why blow up a WHOLE cyberman fleet, just to proove a point (what point? what did that achieve?) How lucky that the doctor knew that the silence was going to say what he did, after he placed the transmmitter in the appollo 11 capsule to transmit what he was going to say to seal there fate, (yet again, genecide!)
How did the doctor know to go to that castle looking for the flesh? Wasnt AMY ganger alive like the other gangers he fought so hard to protect? Yet he killed her real quick didnt he! Thought the pirate captains son couldnt leave the spaceship in the pirate story or he would die…yet there he was. One silurian becomes an army that died real quick. The jadoon, what were they there for? Thought they were the police of space, following protocol to the letter…mmmmm.
Love dr who, (all 11 doctors) Not impressed with this half season so far.

Hi TriciaT I agree with you, I have been a fan since Doctor Who started in the 60’s. That was when the Doctor landed – didn’t know where, met the monsters, sorted them out and set off again to conquer another planet. It was more exciting he didn’t know, we didn’t know where the tardis would be landing and it was much more exciting. This season is dissapointing, too complicated and getting too sissy with all this kissing and cuddling.

I thought the first 35 minutes were mostly a bit meh… not awful, but it felt more like a Russell T Davies fever dream than what we’ve come to expect from Steven Moffatt. It picked up after that and the little twists then the big reveal were awesome… but overall it was let down by that first 35 minutes, the only way it could have been more RTDesque would have been to set it in a council estate!

jUST WANTED TO ADD A COMMENT TO THE DEBATE ABOUT HOW COMPLICATED IT HAS BECOME, I look forward to it each week now, the more complicated the more of a challenge it is. I think we dumb down tv (especially for kids) who in my experience can easily handle this, especially with a good chewy conversation with an adult about time travel paradox and all that. BBC, do not stop this trend in DR WHO, keep it chewy and interesting, you might not please everyone but those with a hunger for using their heads will keep coming back for more.

Great TV production, doesn’t come any more spectacular than 2011s Dr Who series.

Steven Moffat has undertaken the massivest challenge ever with this series. With Series 6 I thInk he’s made a genius plan, having a mid-series cliffhanger.

I don’t think that the cot was the doctors. He had a granddaughter (Susan) way back when William Hartnell was the first doctor. So I think that the cot was for his son or daughter. Main reason behind this thinking is that the doctor didn’t answer when asked if he’d ever had children.Later on he did say that the cot was his and he slept there but as we keep hearing “The doctor lies” Can’t help wondering if things will come full circle and River will turn out to be Susans mother. Also wondering if the goodman is Rory and not the doctor after all.

The title of the next episode, “Let’s kill Hitler”, shouldn’t be taken literally in my view. When River turned up at the end she was talking to the Dr, trying to show him how he is viewed by others, and maybe trying to make him realise that by being who he is he is actually changing too much.

This theme was explored in the “Waters of Mars”, where the Dr said it was a fixed point in time, that couldn’t be changed. Yet he did it in the end (although Adelaide Brooke kills herself back on Earth once she realises what the Dr has done, accepting she should have died on Mars). He then rewrote time to bring back Rory at the end of Series 5.

River, on the other hand, has been much more cagey. We haven’t heard her use it in episode 7, but one of her catchphrases was “spoilers” – she knows what is to happen, and seems determined it must happen, despite all the complications of meeting the Dr in the wrong order.

So back to “Lets kill Hitler” – perhaps it’s an idea so fantastic that it can’t happen. Go back in History and kill Hitler, and just how much History would change? This is the second part of this story (episode 7 and 8 are a two-parter), we know that Melody is ultimately safe because of the adult River, but History (or destiny depending on where you are on the timeline) must happen, with all the consequences. That will ultimately include the death of “the good man” by River.

I think you’re right, it’s a future Doctor that is killed at the lake, so he knows who River really is but doesn’t reveal it. He knows she’s going to kill him when she’s a little girl and he can’t do anything about it without interfering with her history.

    • Mels

      June 5th, 2011 - 4:15pm

It is implied that River is the little girl in the Spacesuit… but I wouldn’t be suprised if it’s a complicated red herring either, since River didn’t seem to recognise the spacesuit that the little girl had ripped out of…

I’m not convinced that River is the Spaceman that kills the Doctor. The invited River watching the Doctor die with Rory and Amy had just come from jail, and if she was jailed for shooting the Doctor (wearing the Spacesuit) then she would have expected her past self to come out of the lake in the Spacesuit. (She seemed genuinely suprised!) Also, she fired a gun at the spaceman after it killed the Doctor too… it wouldn’t make sense to shoot at her past self afterwards… although I think she does know something about the Spaceman (she says ‘of course’ or something like that).

I wouldn’t be suprised if River kills Rory somehow… his photo wasn’t in the little girl’s room after all, only Amy’s… that and Rory hasn’t died for a while :p

And River’s only part Tile Lord… or rather a human that has taken on Time Lord characteristics (and possibly been modified further by the Silence, etc)

    • bdayboy

      June 6th, 2011 - 6:29am

No Mels, Rory is river’s dad!!! She wont kill him!!!

    • Mels

      June 6th, 2011 - 8:37am

No, River wouldn’t *purposely* kill Rory… accidently, maybe. But… also consider there may be a River ganger floating about too… if they could make an avatar of her as a baby, they might be able to animate a ganger. Why have only one ‘weapon’ when you can also have a spare, especially if the Doctor steals the original! Plus they might have genetically meddled with a ganger, and sent it completely mad.
If the ganger died during the event… original River may have been blamed and jailed for the crime… River seems the type to blame herself for something like that, and then take the punishment.

Or the man she (original River or otherwise)’kills’ could just as likely be someone new that we meet in the second half of the series.

It’s all timey wimey topsy turvy lol. 🙂

(Personally I don’t want Rory to die at all lol, I actually quite like him!)

    Loved it.

I like the real clue at the start of the episode, Rivers Birthday!

So River/Melody has been taken and is going to be turned into a weapon to kill the doctor, put into the space suit and kill him at the start of episode 1, then escape the suit but get hurt in doing so and then re-generate. (little girl)

The doctor possibly does not recognise her then falls in love with her etc etc

Pitty about waiting until the Autumn though.

For those moaning about the long story lines, they obviously did not watch classic who which had entire series on one storyline.

Matt Smith is not compared to the other doctors, as they are all individual personalities. He brings his own style which is also great.

not true. The keys to time story arc had 5 seperate stories linked by a simple quest to find the key segments. You can watch any one story, eg power of kroll on its own and still enjoy it. Trail of a time lord again had seperate stories bridged by a trail. You could watch terror of the vervoids on its own and still enjoy it. This LLLOOOOOONNNGGGG two year story arc is overly complicated and watering down the power of dr who. Wimpy cybermen? Whole fleet killed by one man. At one time, rory would have been toast, (or converted…cyberroary! Dont mind Mat smith. Lesbian silurians? Pennant sontarans? Two year story arcs….its a bit much. And yes, I love dr who.

    Spoiler Speculation
Melody Is Taken Down To Earth, And Is Being Raised By The Silence Who Were Created By Demons Run To Protect The Child, They All Live In The Children’s Home In Ep.2 Hence All Of The Pictures Of The Baby With Amy, And Then The Little Girl Regenerates, And The Silence Are Meant To Protect Melody At All Costs, So They Decide To Bring Down The Doctor By Exploding The Universe Which Is Averted. Back To The Little Girl, She Is Running Around When Suddenly She Finds Out That The Doctor And His Friends Are Having A Picnic In Ohio, So She Gets A Spacesuit, Goes Over There And Shoots Him, Therefore That Makes The Doctor The Man Whom River Kills. And She Is About 30 Now, So She Is Found And Taken To The Forest And Her Name Is Changed To River Song, Because The Only Water In The Forest Is The River, But Then The Storm Cage People Catch Up With Her And She Taken To Prison, This Is Probably Wrong.

How does River Song travel through time??? She hasn’t got a TARDIS nor a Vortex Manipulator that I know of, so how does she manage it???

I JUST DON’T GET IT 🙁 Why has Doctor Who become so complicated to follow and understand. Yes, the effects are brilliant BUT surely it’s the story that matters and I don’t understand what’s going on 🙁

I don’t think it was, it was just ‘Gallifreyan writing’. It’s was more likely the Doctor’s real name, as it was his cot after all, though why he had the cot with him in the TARDIS to begin with is a mystery. He would have had to have gone back to Gallifrey at some point in his life to load it into the TARDIS and take it with him… interesting. I wonder if we’ll find out why, since we don’t really know much about the Doctor’s parents or his childhood…

… or the wtiting on the cot could just be the logo of some random Gallifreyan cot manufacturer… (j/k!) :p

Adding to that, River is part Time Lord so can read Gallifreyan, and would be able to read the Doctor’s true name in Gallifreyan (thus the Doctor realises River is Melody, already establishing the baby is part Time Lord).

I have to admit though, watching the end of the episode again, the dialogue is confusing and does make it sound like River/Melody’s name is etched into the cot… but that doesn’t make any sense, as the Doctor would have seen the writing when fetching the cot from the TARDIS.

      wrong wrong wrong

the doctor looked at the knitted thing from the girl who lived in the gamma forests which lay in the cot and the gallifreyan writing wouldve been to do with him more than likely

also who thinks the sontaran was funny talking to the injured boy and who thought river was the docs mum when they were talking before amy found out who river is

I know what you’re talking about whofan4ever, but there’s a shot where River says “can’t you read” to the Doctor and then it specifically pans to the Gallifreyan script on the side of the cot… that’s what we were yacking about because castrovalian thought it might be River’s name, not the Doctor’s.
Like you said, the Doctor may have actually been looking at the embroidery during this pan (which would make the most sense), but we don’t actually see him look at it, which is odd. (Amy makes the same mistake at first, looking at the Gallifreyan writing before realising River is pointing to the embroidary…)

It’s also possible that the Doctor didn’t notice the embroidery at all (he didn’t pick it up or turn it over) and makes the connection because River can read the Gallifreyan script/Doctor’s name. (And therefore River learned of the Doctor’s real name from the crib when she was a baby, and was then able to tell it to the 10th Doctor in ‘Silence in the Library’. Yes, it seems silly that a baby would remember, but the adult River said she remembered the crib…

Either way, this scene was a bit confusing… the dialogue and camerawork seemed to be going off in different directions at times…

at the end of the trailer with the Doctors skeletal hand the slogan was “TIME RUNS OUT” when I created my series that was my slogan which is really creepy because the flood is similar to a monster I created and so are the Headless Monks!

One of my favourite episodes of Matt smith I loved that river was melody pond and the headless monks creepy and I liked the return of Danny boy from victory Of the daleks but I didn’t like that Stephen Moffat has broke back the old monsters it was just like the alliance in series 5 but apart from that the entire series I think has been brilliant
