I thought he was brilliant I’ve been excited to see an older doctor again for a while and I loved how he answered clara back I think he has the possibility to be the best doctor yet

However this story was hardly the best start, a bit lacklustre and didn’t really warrant the extra length. Nice dinosaur, though.
Think Matt Smith appearing in the episode was not a good idea. If viewers are to accept the new Doctor, surely re-visiting the previous one in such a way is just daft.

August 25th, 2014 - 11:08pmI thought it was a great first episode, I love Capaldi and can’t wait to see more of series 8. Clara was wonderful as were Vastra, strax and Jenny.
I liked the Blue Peter competition props for the paternoster gang. (Jenny’s gauntlet, Vastra’s hat pin, and Strax’s medical loupe thing.)
One small error, when the Doctor fell through the tree and lands on the horse, the tree is nowhere to be seen as he gallops out of the courtyard?
Oh, and I don’t understand why Clara would be so shocked about his older appearance when she has seen and helped every incarnation of the Doctor when she jumped into his time stream. She of all people should’ve known it was the same man.

August 26th, 2014 - 11:05amThe way I see the clara thing is that she knows and possibly fancies the doctor (11), to her when she thinks of the doctor she thinks of 11, to her he is THE doctor. All the other doctors she’s met she knows are the doctor but she doesn’t necessarily make the link that they are the same person as 11, like she knows they’re the doctor but doesn’t think about them as being the same person, she just thinks of them as different people who need to be saved, like in the 50th she’s meeting three doctors, but she still sees 11 as the doctor (as she says herself) she calls the others the doctor but to her they’re not THE doctor. So when HER doctor regenerates and she’s faced with the fact that these men are all the same person (a fact she’s never needed to really acknowledge) it’s too much for her, the man she loves is gone and is now a man who looks old enough to be her dad and doesn’t even remember her.
The closest thing I relate it to is James Bond. So many actors have played Bond, we all know they’re meant to be the same person but we don’t really think about them being the same person (that doesn’t make sense, I know lol). We never really think they change, but imagine if half way through a film Bond goes from being played by Daniel Craig to being played by John Hurt, you would be confused and shocked, you’d know it’s the same character yet still find it hard to believe and accept.
I just sort of believe that’s sort of how you’d act when the person who could well be your boyfriend becomes a grumpy old man, she knows it’s him but just doesn’t want to accept it.

I started with David Tennant and the transition from him to Matt smith was an easy one. They seemed tl struggle with Peter Capaldi. I kept waiting for it to pick up but it never did! Im afraid Capaldi might just be too old for the part. They might lose the younger viewer. And im Capaldis age. It was a big let down

August 25th, 2014 - 10:39pmCapaldi is a fantastic actor and was absolutely superb as the doctor and like it or not he’s here to stay for years to come. You really can tell the die hard fans from the casuals because it’s the same tiresome garbage every time a new doctor debuts. The script was nigh on spot on it was funny, dramatic and on occasion shocking especially when the doctor appeared to abandon clara.

Any one of you realize that the woman at the end in ‘heaven’ is Clara? She was called missy and matt smith called clare that in the phone call at the end, it sound like miss you but she said missy! The woman also claimed to be the doctor’s boyfriend, and capaldi said it might be your boyfriend before she answered the phone call. Who else could she be? People have always thought of Clara and the doctor as a couple previously more than the usual doctor and companion. The woman also new about the doctors accents, clara also mentioned his scottish accent in the final scene.

August 25th, 2014 - 11:12pmPlayed back recording with volume raised and it sounds to me at a stretch miss ya and the subtitles say miss you. Who or what she is still unclear but wether she is or not an older/future Clara or whatever her action in reactivating the lead robot seems hostile and the seeming slight glow on her face and clenching of her teeth at the end suggests something different about her entirely.Whatever the motivation in apparently giving the established Clara a number to phone the Tardis and the placing of the newspaper advert.

August 25th, 2014 - 3:08pmreading some of the comments on this site and others is what separates the real fans from the fanboys/fangirls peter capaldi was amazing I’ve been excited for this series since I found out peter capaldi was playing the doctor because he’s an excellent actor and it’s about time we had an older doctor again im a big fan of pertwees doctor only started watching the classics a few years ago but instantly fell in love with them I have yet to see a doctor I don’t like and ive seen episodes from each doctor and their all equally brilliant each doctor brings something new to the show.

August 25th, 2014 - 12:29amThe episode was alright, but every time anyone made any reference to the Doctors age I was taken right out of the episode. It was so out of character for Clara to be concerned about the Doctor being old, it was just written to tend to all the complaining fans.

August 24th, 2014 - 10:50pmThe episode was actually pretty good. It made good use of the Clockwork Droids, and though I was sad to see the Tyrannosaurus die so early, it actually made sense. I’m really annoyed with how they justify the Tyrannosaurus being almost as tall as Big Ben, because it not only conflicts with scientific knowledge, but also with previous appearances of dinosaurs in Doctor Who. I’m liking Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor so far, he’s definitely different from Matt Smith’s Eleventh. He seems to emanate a lot of Tom Baker and Colin Baker in his performance, with a large screen presence, a good deal of arrogance, and an even more alien personality than Smith. I think he’ll do very well. I liked how Clara was used to represent a great deal of the teenage female fans of the show, and how the Paternoster Gang was used in this episode. I’m interested to see the Mistress’s connection in the season finale, why she’s revived the leader of the Clockwork Droids, and why she calls the Doctor her boyfriend. (Susan’s grandmother, perhaps?) I give the episode a 9/10.

August 24th, 2014 - 10:52pmActually, now that I think about it, I think Capaldi’s big flaw as the Doctor is that, although he was great with the darker, more serious moments, he seemed a little stiff and awkward with the eccentric moments. Also, I REALLY liked the scene where the Eleventh Doctor calls her to convince her to help his future self through his regeneration.

August 24th, 2014 - 10:26pmI watched this new series with my 15 year old daughter who started with David Tennant; neither of us can understand all this sycophantic twaddle being posted on here about how good it was. The episode was poorly written, directed inconsistently and abounded with continuity errors. We reserve judgment on Capaldi as he couldn’t make a silk purse out of this sow’s ear. It seems the professional reviewers are bewitched by Steven Moffatt a la the Emperor’s New Clothes. Bring back Russell T. Davies.

Bring back RTD err…. no thanks, not that there was anything wrong with his reign but the series needs to move forward not back. You’re obviously fans of david tennant and RTD as opposed to being fans of doctor who, their time is done! deal with it.

I’m not saying that he had to be Matt Smith. That’s what Dr. Who is about – embracing change… But I feel the writers could have given us more of what he is, instead of more than what he’s not.

Now we’re going to see a more darker, alien side to our favourite time lord, after all the show is about constant change and evolution. Time stands still for no man or time lord. Can’t wait for ep 2. I’ve already pre-ordered the box-set.

August 24th, 2014 - 6:13pmSnazzy new opening titles and theme rearrangement.Is it too early to say peter capaldi might just overshadow matt smiths excellent doctor. Have run out of superlatives. Could easily be this generations jon pertwee. Hes my hero already even if he is tonally different from tenant and smith. so anyway I sussed the robotic half man as soon as he started with the bodypart collecting. I,m sure I,m not the only one who was shouting ‘SS Madame de pompadour at the screen, even though it was its sister ship.The marie Antoinette thing must have been happening alongside the tenant story,offscreen. Needed more capaldi and less paternoster gang (just give them a spin off series. I do enjoy them,but like river song theyre starting to take over.) Knew the ‘cowardly’ doctor would come through for clara ,in all his heroic majesty, in the end,when she really needed him despite his post regeneration and capricious nature. Had a tear in the eye at the surprise inclusion of matt smith (was that a pre recorded insert though?). I,m mainly intrigued by the lady of the nethershere and her’heavenly place’. Is she collectingenemies/companions(reminiscent of the obelisk in the five doctors) throughout this series’ episodes as part of a story arc. Can,t wait to find out. Great start to the season.

Peter Capaldi could be as great a Dr Who as any of the last three if lazy script writing and the overuse of tired adversaries and accomplices do not turn this into a boring space-filler of a show as it became once before.

August 24th, 2014 - 1:26pmAs an “old fart” who watched the first Dr Who, and saw it repeated because of JFK’s assassination, I don’t expect to be listened to, but here goes.
The casting of Peter Capaldi demanded a different script (he’s good) – why bring in Strax and the Lizard warrior in the first episode. Change the pace and challenge the minds. No problem with the new doctor and Clara – just surprise us -and Daleks next week – give me a break!

I’ve been hooked on Peter Capaldi since they announced him and his first full episode definitely did not disappoint! I loved the Darker yet whimsical theme and I love the new titles sequence! I think that the fact that Vastra and co. were in the episode was a way of lowering us into the new Doctor’s style slowly, using familiar faces and places. Here’s to one of THE BEST Doctors EVER!!!

Deep Breath was Awesome and I rate it 5/5! It had some grand, dark and funny moments and I felt like I was watching a classic episode! 😀 Bravo to Moffat for such a great start to the 12th Doctor’s Era

August 24th, 2014 - 10:57am‘Deep Breath’ was very good indeed. Peter Capaldi looks set to be a terrific Doctor. I’m sure many fans and viewers will have several misgivings about this Doctor, but remember,even Troughton wasn’t that well regarded at first, following on from Hartnell in 1966.
Jenna Coleman was really great in this episode and put in a very strong performance, one of her best. Plus it’s also welcome to see the Paternoster Gang. All in all a fine opening episode for a brand new Doctor. Even the dinosaur didn’t look that bad.

August 24th, 2014 - 11:04amI would add, that whilst the opening titles looked very good, I felt the theme tune was too slight, and a bit washed out. To be honest I don’t feel the theme tune has been as dynamic or epic since Tennant. The theme whilst retained is seemingly getting worse.

August 24th, 2014 - 11:12amAgreed on the theme tune. They should look back at the test theme once considered for Pertwee’s Doctor (it’s out there somewhere). If you listen to that is simply dire. This new version is biting on that ones heels. I wish this would be taken into consideration and revert back to something with a bit more Oomph! to it.

August 24th, 2014 - 10:35amI found it quite amazing! Strax was funny (For once), the CGI has improved A LOT and we finally see the darker side of the Doctor never seen before on New Who. Along with the scene where Clara rejects Capaldi made my upset along with Smith phoning her. Overall I found this story brilliant and can’t wait or next week! Even if I’ve already watched most of it…
