since Russell T Davis left Dr Who and David Tenant left I am sorry to say that the series is going downhill fast. I have been a fan of Dr Who since it began in 1963 but this current series is the worst I have ever seen. Look back to the classic series and give Peter some decent scripts Why not remake some of the missing episodes from the early years . Anything would better than this rubbish. You have a great actor in the leading roll .give him the chance to be a great Doctor

The season started off a shaky, but it seems to be finding it’s voice. This episode rocked.

I thought it was good episode and series eight has so far been much better than the Pond episodes, which with a few exceptions were pretty dire. But I was disappointed to hear the Doctor coming up with those cliches about negativity. It was thinking like that among mortgage sellers in America that caused the crash. The Doctor should do better than that.

Loved this episode though I have to agree about it being a little rushed. The story demanded more screen time.
One thing that did get to me though was the whole ‘don’t think’ bit. Come on, we’ve had don’t blink, then breath and now think. Its becoming a little repetitive.
Loving Capaldis Doctor though. Even though they do keep making him slip into Smith mode.

Why so much hate for this story?!
    It was a great ep!!!
Not in the slightest overcomplicated – just cleverly written!
It was only confusing if you didn’t pay attention!
Yes they reused the ‘Hide’ scenario, but it was used much better in what was otherwise a totally original Doctor Who story (in the sense that it’s the first proper bank heist story they’ve done)

It had a great selection of characters, all well acted and well written, with a well paced and clever story!

So far I’ve been really impressed by this season, witty lines, slightly darker side. Robot Hood being the exception to an engaging series. Capaldi is a welcome breath of fresh air. I’m amazed how so many people on here are so ‘anti’. Time Heist, like the brilliant Listen was another good story. Developing the supporting roles in so short a time is always an issue but I saw no problem there. (The guy did look a little like the last of the Brunnen G btw – just a thought). The stories have been pretty good and certainly better than a mini UK on the back of a space whale or spitfires shooting at Dalek ships for goodness sake!

I have been trying to really enjoy Series 8. “Listen” had some really nice moments. But something is just not right… Something is off… Maybe many little things… I’ve loved all the Doctors, except 6 and 7… And it wasn’t the actors I disliked… It was that “something is off” thingy and I’m getting the same vibe with number 12… This makes me very sad… It’s not the actors… This series needs 3 really, really good episodes in a row to pull itself out of this funk… And hi-lights from next week didn’t leave me very optimistic. How many episodes are we going to have about Clara dating? I feel like I’m in a very bad dream… Please, can someone save this season???

Im with you on this Anthem68. Infact Im struggling to understand why so many people have enjoyed the series to date.
I really like Capaldis Doctor and enjoyed Time Heist (though so many didnt) but overall there is a definite (in my opinion) problem somewhere along the line.
There is, most certainly far too much Clara dating. Too much focus on Clara full stop (maybe thats why I enjoyed TH because the focus was right on the Doctor). The sad thing is that I really like Clara as a companion and the writers do her an injustice just as they are with Capaldi.
Doctors 6&7 werent bad Doctors as such, they just suffered at the hands of the story and script writers (aswell as poor scheduling and budgets). Sylvester McCoy did have Remembrance of the Daleks and Curse of Fenric to his name (both bonafide classics imo) which illustrate that when given the right story and script, it works.
You are quite correct that something isnt right and we do indeed need a good run of decent episodes. I think though that its probably time for a change of showrunner as SM appears to be spreading himself too thinly to give himself the quality timing to our favourite programme. Maybe then we may get what you and I are asking for.

I think it’s important to underscore the fact that most critics LOVE Doctor Who and find fault only when what they love is going wonky… This reboot has been a blast! It’s only these last two series, 7 & 8, that I’ve noticed a considerable drop in quality… or something… The post about SM looking really tired these days rings true, doesn’t it? I’m with Big D and many others: a new doctor deserves some new energy in the writing and direction… Time to go SM???

I agree this series just isn’t right I think its a mixture of different things casting and scrip Clara and the doctor just don’t work together well, no chemistry there. Amy Pond and Mat Smith worked well but I feel its gone downhill since. unfortunately everything will reach its peak and then there is only one way for it to go

Moffit and his writers really can’t help themselves can they? Complicated, illogical stories without a beginning or a decend ending. What about good stories? No, Moffit can’t do it and relies on gimmickry and unnecessary complexity to keep an audience’s attention. I like the new Doctor and Jenna Coleman makes a lovely companion, but the stories are despairingly bad.

It was… alright. The premise and story was pretty good, Clara has returned to form, the Doctor was brilliant, and the Teller was terrifying. As for the problems, the side characters were underdeveloped and nothing really became of their inner conflicts, they pulled the same “monster just wants to find its mate” thing they did in Hide, only it’s even more forced here, and the atomic shredders being teleports and the two side characters coming to the rescue felt like a huge cop out. I’d say a 6/10 or a 5/10. While Steve Thompson didn’t screw up as badly here as he did with The Curse of the Black Spot or Journey To the Center of the TARDIS, it still falls under “average” in my opinion.

Also, Steven Moffat has still only truly “wow”ed me once this season, and the trend continues. As much as I hate to say it, I think he needs to step down as showrunner. He’s using way too many ideas this season, and it’s blatantly obvious.

I think Capaldi is very good, it’s just Moffat keeps delivering terrible scripts. It’s like Colin Baker – his time on Doctor Who was bad because the writers added dark horror to his stories. Please don’t go 1986 on us Moffat!

YOu can also draw parallels with capaldi/baker in that they both appeared on the show before they became the doctor, Their doctors are finding it difficult to endear and engage the audience due to the difficult regenerative change and the viewing figures are starting to dwindle. I do hope capaldis doctor settles down and I think measures might be taken to avoid this later. I,too don,t wish to return to those dark uncertain times.

      September 21st, 2014 - 4:52pm

      Completely agree Skaroman.
I like Capaldi but the stories and scripts are letting him down. I think its time for a change of showrunner personally and have thought for a long time Mark Gatiss should take over. However, since the abysmal and childish Robot of Sherwood Im not too sure on that now.
I dont think theres anything wrong with horror elements and some of the best stories have included these but you do need skillful writing. Not over complicated or convaluted writing but good, solid and clever storytelling.
By having too much focus on the companion and have the ‘darker’ Doctor on the sidelines glowering, he will automatically become like the ‘monster’ seen in Listen, and not endear himself to the audience instead of being the ‘grumpy, but caring grandad’ figure as portrayed by William Hartnell.

    • skaroman

      September 22nd, 2014 - 12:43pm

I think Moffat is good for the occasional story, but not every story. He’s given us the empty child, weeping angels and vashta nerada, but we need Russell T Davies back.

    • Dalek The Supreme

      September 22nd, 2014 - 1:28pm

I wouldn’t call his scripts this season terrible, (just average, with the exception of the brilliant Into the Dalek and maybe Deep Breath) but they’re just so average, and it’s blatantly clear that he’s reusing old plot elements from previous scripts, both his own and other’s. I’ve loved his work during Matt Smith’s run as the Doctor, and his scripts under RTD’s reign, but Peter Capaldi’s potentially intriguing Doctor is being let down by average scripts.

Skaroman, bringing back Russel T Davies is like Peter Capaldi regenerating into Matt Smith or David Tennant. It would appease a lot of fans, but it would also spit in the face of the show’s core principle: change. I do want Steven Moffat to step down, but let Mark Gatiss, or Neil Cross, or Neil Gaiman take over. Someone new, who hasn’t had a shot at running the show. Besides, Davies had his problems, too.

Why does SM overcomplicate the plots/timelines in such a roundabout way?.I know its his style but whats wrong withsome straightforward storytelling for a change. It doesn,t have to be twisty turny.I,m not watching’sherlock’. Its structured as though I,m Watching a tarantino/Nolan. Lets get back to basics and stop being too clever by half.Hes nothing to prove. Having said that it was an entertaining enough caper and keeley hawes gleefully camped it up as ms. delphox in the sarah Lancashire/celia imrie mode. The ending did have a touch of the ‘Hide’ episode about it. Still trying hard to engage with the capricious doctor. I feel hes going to push claras loyalty too far by the end of this series.

I agree. A lot of his scripts in these past few years are let down by being overly complicated. It’s like he’s trying to one-up everyone else by throwing everything into his scripts, but only let’s himself down. Like you say, he has nothing to prove. He wrote maybe one sub-par story from 2005 up to the end of the first half of Series 6. Then from The Wedding of River Song to The Snowmen, you had average to disappointing episodes (with, in my opinion, the exception of Asylum of the Daleks, but that, too, had some problems). He did start to improve a bit in the second half of Series 7, and The Day of the Doctor felt like a return to form for him, but now in Series 8 it’s clear that he’s given everything he has. I think the problem is that he loves running the show so much he doesn’t want to step down. However, I think the best thing he can do for the show now is to step down.

as a fan of dr who since the 2005 reboot,im afraid its lost its way,the new docs rubbish, the storys are very weak,my children wont even watch it now.to prove my point watch 9th,10th or 11th doc episodes to see wonderful doctors with character, sadly capaldi was wrong choice.in the words of john hurt-doctor no more-.time moffet regenerated too as sadly theres no chemistry between doc and clara any more in his writing and whats happenend to the music score inside the episode,no doctor theme!i am still a fan I just hope it gets better.

I disagree. Peter Capaldi is a great actor and the character the writers are trying to aim for for his Doctor is very intriguing, but they keep throwing in too many Matt Smith-like scenes that, although they would have worked for the Eleventh Doctor, they just don’t fit the Twelfth Doctor’s character. There’s also the blatantly obvious fact that Steven Moffat is running out of ideas and copying and pasting ideas from previous stories, without even bothering to try and hide them.

when this episode was announced o was really exited I love heist films and I love doctor who so for me this was the perfect combo

but to be honest last night I was dissopinted . it was good but not what I was expecting . I felt the story was slightly poor and rushed and confusing. i felt the 2 chacters did not have enoght of a story if you know what mean I also thought it should have been more like oceans eleven but they got into the bank so easy and I disliked the ending witch was very similar to hide . but over all it was alright / good

but I think it could have been better
