I personally saw this finale as the end of a chapter that has been almost a decade in the making. Since the start Doctor Who up until now has been about Gallifrey or things related to it, and now that Gallifrey is saved “So to Speak” it has finally closed the Time War and opened a new direction for Doctor who to take.

In some ways this is a fitting end to this story arch, there is no need for gallifrey to return for a good while and the time war can finally be forgotten. I have had mixed feelings about the series for the past few years, but regardless I am happy that after ten years Doctor Who can move onto something bigger and better.

You could even say that New Who is redundant when describing the series.

Hope this is finally the last we hear of the Time War – of all RTD’s misconcieved ideas this was by far the worst. He made the daleks far too powerful. NO ONE could have taken on the Time Lords in a war. At the end of The War Games (Troughton’s finale and the first time we hear who he is and where he is from) they show themselves capable of erasing an entire planet from time ‘as if it had never even existed’.

Michael Pickwoad and Ray Holman. Murray Gold, Steven Moffat, Maisie Williams and Peter Capaldi. Jenna Coleman. We have so many amazing people to be thankful for.

Hmmmm…………. My over riding thought is ‘why another Clara is the centre of the universe story?’ The Clara Who line was terrible, and I have seen enough comments on here from people complaining it has been ‘The Clara Who Show’. All the things that irritate me were on display in this episode, the after-mentioned Clara (or any of Moffat’s companions) is centre of the universe stuff, these prophecies that keep occurring – I seem to remember a blue head in a box having prophecy over the Doctor – awful – and Moffat’s Doctor has to be the best or biggest with this time going to the edge of the universe and cracking time to save Clara- or whatever (!) The whole Hybrid storyline became a damp squib told through a vehicle of a now pointless ‘Me’ character, just to set up The Doctor/Clara “love in” at the centre of the universe and to serve her exit….To be cynical. Clara’s “exit” was done rather well, I thought, in ‘Face The Raven’ and has now been cheated.(Wonder why the Doctor didn’t do all this for Adric (!?) ) Oh well, I was really looking forward to seeing the drama between Rassilon and The Doctor, even The Sisters of Karn, also exploring Gallifrey, and felt all these were under used after an excellent set-up. The Commander was great, didn’t like the way the Doctor gunned him down, was that really necessary, and felt the regenerated character – and some of the support were as wooden as, an 80’s set, or any other rubbish comedy line akin to those Moffat drops in from time to time……. . Because I didn’t appreciate the episode, it’s not to say the there was not qualities in the acting, the direction, sets and costumes, even the writing, quite the contrary, however, if you don’t like gin, don’t sip it from a tea cup. (to paraphrase a song. )

I really respect Peter Capaldi as an actor so I think it must be the the script writers who need to regenerate. This latest series has been truly abysmal. I have only watched to the end out of loyalty.

Moffat had a great idea of bringing Gallifrey back, then ruins it by bringing Clara back. Hence the whole thing becomes a sorry mess.

I’m still trying to work out why exactly he did that.

    December 5th, 2015 - 9:39pm

Hmmmm…Very watchable, and truly great in places…but Clara’s story had been done to death (pardon the pun). The stuff on Gallifrey early on was superb, highly dramatic and effective. But I was getting very bored with all the Clara storyline mid-way into this adventure. What started as something quite epic for the first 15 – 20 minutes, then stuttered along. What started out as a great story surrounding the Doctor, quickly became another story centered around Clara! The Doctor being back on Gallifrey should have been huge throughout the story. But it all too quickly fell away in the background…as if Moffat was playing it safe. For a finale to what was on the whole a very good series was a let down overall. ‘Heaven Sent’ was brilliant, but got our hopes up too much. ‘Hell Bent’ could never live up to it’s potential. But for me…it fell quite short of being adequate for a finale. Clara’s story had finished long ago, and I’m afraid I felt she outstayed her welcome. So seeing her again just felt like covering old ground. ‘Hell bent’ gets a 6/10 from Len.

I have to agree. I’m a big Clara fan, and I think she’s been a brilliant companion, but I think her storylines have been overdone and done to death. She was essential last series, but this series could have seen her off gracefully, not clumsily like it ended up. And what a waste of a return to Gallifrey, that promised so much more.

      December 6th, 2015 - 10:53am

I completely agree. Moffat was just relying on us screaming at how awesome Gallifrey was for the entire episode to cover up the fact that there was no actual plot. And it worked. For, as you say, maybe the first 15-20 minutes or something. But then it became clear: there was no threat in any way. What did the Time Lords were terrified of this Hybrid, all of the cloister bells ringing yada yada, but literally nothing materialised, what was there to be afraid of exactly…the Doctor and Clara are the Hybrid and they create chaos in their wake…. or something?? The entire hour was the Doctor bluffing to keep Clara alive with nothing threatening them. You can tell the producers were worried about this, so they got Moffat to write that whole 30 second sequence in the Matrix with the Angels and Daleks etc just to inject a bit thrill, just like in the Time of the Doctor when the weeping angels were in the snow and the scenes serves the plot in no way.

  • Colin Buick

    December 5th, 2015 - 9:38pm

I really like it especially the conclusion. Gallifrey scenes were great especially the cloisters and references about the matrix. I also noted the references about time Lords regenerating from man to woman etc. And clara has a tardis with a immortal woman travelling with her.

List of Episodes, best to worst:
    1) Face the Raven (Shame it wasn’t a two-parter- the story could have been expanded on so much more- and Sarah Dollard is and absolutely fantastic writer!!)
    2) The Zygon Invasion & The Zygon Inversion
    3) Heaven Sent & Hell Bent
    4) The Girl who Died & The Woman who Lived
    5) The Magician’s Apprentice & The Witch’s Familiar
    6) Under the Lake & Before the Flood (though Toby Whithouse is my favourite Doctor Who writer)
    7) Sleep No More (What an awful episode…)

    1) The Witch’s Familiar and Heaven Sent: 10/10. Two fantastic episodes, but in very different ways.

    2) The Zygon Inversion: 9.5/10. A great episode, with the Doctor’s speech making it amazing.

    3) Face the Raven and The Magician’s Apprentice: 9/10. For Face the Raven, Clara’s farewell was done well and it was a great episode in general. For The Magician’s Apprentice, the Doctor played the electric guitar on a tank…enough said.

    4) The Zygon Invasion: 8/10. Fairly exciting and was simply quite enjoyable.

    5) Before the Flood: 7.5/10. I loved the Fisher King, despite being underused, and it was a nice plot.

    6) Under the Lake: 7/10. A nice base under siege story, but just had something missing.

    7) The Girl Who Died: 6/10. Fairly entertaining, but just like Under the Lake, cannot help but think something was missing.

    8) Hell Bent: 5.5/10. A disappointing end to a pretty good series. It also sort of ruined Clara’s death, which was done so well in Face the Raven. However, it was nice to see Gallifrey again and I really enjoyed the first 15 minutes or so. Certain parts were good.

    9) The Woman Who Lived: 5/10. It just didn’t really work for me. Again, had a few good scenes though.

    10) Sleep No More: 4/10. I wasn’t fond of the found footage style and found it boring at parts. I completely understand why lots of people like it though.

    Hell Bent was truly beautiful.
Clara has become the Doctor. The woman who ran away from Gallifrey and stole a TARDIS. The woman who has a companion. The woman who’s constant companion is death. The woman who lived, with the woman who lived.

Words cant describe how much I adore Jenna Coleman. Outstanding series with an outstanding conclusion. It is heartbreaking to think that this is the ‘last’ we have seen of Clara. I have loved her since it was first announced that Jenna would play the role of the next companion, and Face The Raven saw the first time that I have horrifically screamed at the television in floods of tears as the raven plummeted into her chest. That shows how much I love her. Masie Williams returning for the fourth time as Me (and Clara’s new companion in time and space) was amazing too. But nothing hurt me more than when The Doctor and Clara had their last scenes together in the TARDIS diner, outstanding performances from Jenna Coleman, Peter Capaldi and Masie Williams. I look forward to the spin off series which will happen one day (hopefully), I feel like Jenna deserves her own show alongside Masie which would go down really well everywhere, that and ‘Class’ could be the Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood of the Moffat era.

I was disappointed with the fact that Clara is still ‘alive’. A cop out that reminds me of Peri’s departure in Trial of a Time Lord (with the underrated Colin Baker).
As for spinoffs btw, I would have quite liked to have seen one with Jenny from ‘The Doctor’s Daughter.

I really enjoyed it! But… after last week, I thought this whole episode was going to be a big stand-off between the Doctor and Timelords and the first 10 minutes seemed like that! I do wish they left Clara alone or that SHE forgot the Doctor rather than other way around! Also, I hope that STUPID flying diner either crashes into a moon or gets sucked into a black-hole because I never want to see IT or Clara again! The best moments were the first 20 minutes and the end where he gets the new SONIC! And of course seeing a clip of Christmas was great! Great episode, just SOOO different to what I was expectingn, I think last week was better! “I am Rassilon! GALLIFREY is mine!!”

Somewhat mixed feelings. Overall a good episode. I think its great that there’s scope for Coleman and Williams to pop up every now and again and maybe a spinoff or audio. However, I thought Face the Raven wrapped up Clara’s story nicely.

The Galifrey aspect was superb and the scene in the cloisters was scary (made me jump!)

I think overall this series has been superb.

my order of this series goes

    01. face the raven 10/10
    02. heavens sent 10/10
    03. magicians apprentice 10/10
    04. before the flood 9.5/10
    05. Hell bent 9/10
    06. zygon invasion 9/10
    07.witches familiar 8.5/10
    08. under the lake 8/10
    09. zygon inversion 8/10
    10. the women who lived 7/10
    11. sleep no more 5/10
    12. the girl who died 5/10

I love the idea of Ashildr and Clara traveling together. definitely some kind of spin off coming up.

Isn’t Jenna Coleman tied up with another TV series, playing a young Queen Victoria i believe and Maise Williams is tied up with Game of Thrones. So cant see a spin off anytime soon. A one of appearance on Dr Who yes i can.

A near faultless season let down by a damp squib of an ending. Gallifrey returns but is hardly a part of the story – played like it’s never even been missing. More annoying is that after a ‘Doctor-led’ season it’s an episode with Clara who we have already had a long drawn out goodbye to 2 episodes previously. The only good thing was the retro-Tardis.

WHERE WAS THE PLOT AND CONCLUSION?! WHO IS THE HYBRID? WHAT IS THE DOCTOR’S CONFESSION?
I didn’t like that he forgot Clara at all, but I LOVED her conclusion. Gallifrey was so insignificant, and silly. The first 20 minutes were so slow, and nothing actually happened.
REALLY MIXED BAG!! CLARA WAS THE BEST PART OF THE EPISODE, BUT THE REST OF IT WAS NON EXISTENT!
