Oh dear Clara looks like she staying, thought the next season would be better without her, as in the last one she been the central character, taking the limelight off the doctor. Its down hill all the way.

I like clara. It was all that love interest business with danny pink that killed it. A character I hope we,ve seen the back of now.

I agree with THe ergon, I like Clara, she’s a great companion, it was Danny Pink who was the unwelcome distraction this season. I’m starting to warm to the 12th Doctor now; its taken a whole series, but I am now starting to see/accept him as ‘The Doctor’. Clara has helped with that so I’m looking forward to the next series with Capaldi and Coleman in situ. Its up hill all the way.

I think Danny could have been better if his one character trait wasn’t that he was a soldier, just so the Doctor could dislike him for being one. (Though that doesn’t fit with how he was friends with soldiers like Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Sergeant Benton, or how he mentioned that Grand Marshall Skaldak deserved the Russian soldiers’ respect because he was a soldier)

It was ok but i do think Clara should go, give Capaldi’s Doctor a new companion to work with. I feel we a different side to the Doctor when they get a new companion.

I seriously had doubts about this and thought I,d hate it but my faith has been restored for now. Scary, funny and festive in just the right measure. I,m so relieved that Nick frosts santa and his elves were a dream construct in doctor who world. Iwas worried it was just going to be another over the top festive romp. I don,t think young kids would question whether father Christmas was real or not.

All in all a good episode with the promise of more to come. Looking forward to good writing, good episodes and enjoyable Sci Fi. Keep the standard high, aim it at adults and the kids will enjoy the ride. Good Sci Fi makes you “think” outside the box.

      Best for a while

Seemed a bit low budget compared to the RTD era

More like a padded out episode

Some great scenes especially the merry Christmas song bit

Great episode. Even though the majority of ‘Last Christmas’ is all a dream. It’s not the first time it’s happened in Doctor Who either. ‘Amy’s Choice’ is another one that immediately springs to mind. Plus I’ve always considered (at least by the last couple of minutes of part one, plus up to and including the end of part five), ‘The Mind Robber’ to be a dream of the Doctor’s, by an outside force.

I really enjoyed ‘Last Christmas’. I thought it was the Best Christmas Special since ‘The Christmas Invasion’. Most Christmas specials for me anyway have been average or fairly poor.

I wish it could have been a past watershed episode, given the censors a Mary Whitehouse moment, and gone all out horror/suspense and given it a 30 Days of Night tonal quality*……..I thought Peter Capaldi was excellent and his Doctor is good for me, I liked the concept (not too original, though), but the supporting cast was not much to write about, and as for the comedy with the elves and Santa, that was abysmal and ruined every part of the episode they were in – story point or not. *see opening sentence.

Before I begin on my opinion, let me just say something.

It shocks me the amount of hate this episode is receiving. If this is “worse” than that embarrassing TDTWATW episode, or that really boring The Next Doctor, then I have no clue what to think anymore.

I thought the whole idea was great. The whole dream within dreams part give me the chills, nevermind the Dream Crabs which themselves gave a scary tone to the episode.

Ashley was a great character. I wanted her to join the TARDIS crew, though its a shame she isn’t a scientist. It’s been a long time since the Doctor had a companion that intelligent.

Flaws: The dreams DID get overused. After the fourth one, there was no need for the aged Clara one… It was just there at the end to make us Whovians thing “Yep, Clara’s going.”

Other than that, great episode, probably ranks 2nd or 3rd in the Christmas Top 10. 😀

There’s not that much hate…it’s just that those who didn’t like it, as usual, leave far more aggressive comments so they stand out more. But if you look at the voting results (as I type this) 70% voted for the top 2 comments. Most people who enjoyed it will vote but not have time to comment but the vast majority of those who disliked it will vote (probably several times) and will always be sure comment so they can spout their negative opinions….like we actually care what they think 🙂

I agree with theExtremeBlueTardis, I’m surprised at the amount of dislike. I’m not a hater, but I’ve certainly been honest with my posts this season, some of the episodes have been poor, and I was not a fan of Capaldi’s doctor, however I enjoyed ‘Last Christmas’ – 7/10, quite enjoyed Capaldi as the The Doctor, and thought this was leagues ahead of TDTWATW (which is my least favourite DW Xmas special). The concept of it being mostly a dream is fine as it was done well, and when ‘a dream’ was used for the Amy’s Choice episode, I liked that too.

I thought it was absolutely brilliant, favourite Christmas Special by a mile. I found the whole story very interesting (a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream ect…) though it did get a bit silly around the aged Clara time though I thought this was still touching especially seeing the similarities between that Clara and the aged 11th Doctor, and I think that would have been a good and quite ironic way for Clara to go. I loved the sleigh ride over London and all the supporting characters (it sort of got them involved in new, unusual ways such as the book reading). Finally I liked how Santa was the sign that it was a dream – I found this quite smart. Overall my favourite Capaldi story so far though I hated the elves they made me want to melt into the sofa watching with my family 🙄

    A complete shambles

Nick Frost was good, and had an interesting twist. However, the amount of stuff it reuses is criminal. Alien, Arthur Christmas, Inception to name a few. The dream crabs were actually pretty cool, and could have deserved their own episode.

The overall plot was…inconsistent. One minute we’re in Ridley Scott’s Alien, then it’s Christmas with the dreariest supporting characters ever. If the ideas were original, it wouldn’t be half bad. But there’s the feeling that we’ve seen it all before, and done better the first time.

It wasn’t even funny, for a Christmas episode. Quite possibly the second worst Christmas episode in modern Who, with the utterly awful Time of the Doctor last year. I’ve had enough with Moffat’s terrible writing. Clara is still the worst written character I’ve ever seen in Dr. Who, and she hasn’t changed at all in two series.

It just makes me mad about how Moffat can steal ideas from other things, and re purpose them with about three others, and people find it good.

quite correct. it was absolute bilge & certainly not only the worst christmas special but also the biggest pile of drivel of an episode yet. moffat really needs to go. seasson 8 was dire & i’m not looking forward to season 9 at all!

With the exception of your hate for The Time of the Doctor (not a perfect episode by any means, but I still found it to be a largely) enjoyable experience, I completely agree. What really got me was how Moffat trolled us by writing an emotional goodbye for Clara, and then completely disregarding it.

      December 27th, 2014 - 11:03am

Clara is terribly written, period. Coleman’s a good actress, but unfortunately she only has about 3 emotions. I love the Doctor, I love Danny, I hate the Doctor and now I’m going to cry.

If she would just leave/killed off or whatever, I would be happy. It’s just a dreadful character.

Btw, my hate for Tiime of the Doctor is just that it’s a complete mess, and kinda dumb. It’s definetly a better one of Moffat’s. It’s just…bad. Not terrible, just good ol’ bad.

      December 29th, 2014 - 8:02am

Eh, she became more of a character this past season. Definitely not the best companion, but at least she has a consistent personality.

I’m just mad that we were shown that she died, only “Oh! It’s just another dream! Do-over!”

Well, a lot of explanations were rushed, and most of the first third of the episode is kinda forgettable, but I felt it really picked up once the Doctor discovered the crack, and the regeneration was brilliant. =

At least Matt Smith was entertaining enough to make his comedic scenes funny. Peter Capaldi, obviously having to play a more serious Doctor, in no fault of his own, has to play everything completely straight. All this one has was the criminally underused Nick Frost as Santa Claus.

I loved the title sequence makeover. I thought the ending was absolute perfection! i fell for it hook line and sinker i genuinely thought her story done, so pleased it isn’t. also the way that aged clara mirrored the doctor from last year was very moving. I thought that girl from fresh meat (shona) could actually be a decent companion.
