What Did You Think of Nightmare in Silver?

What Did You Think of Nightmare in Silver?

Hedgewick’s World of Wonders was once the greatest theme park in the galaxy, but it’s now the dilapidated home to a shabby showman, a chess-playing dwarf and a dysfunctional army platoon.

When the Doctor, Clara, Artie and Angie arrive, the last thing they expect is the re-emergence of one of the Doctor’s oldest foes. The Cybermen are back

Now that the 7th episode of series 7b has aired in the UK what did you think?, was it the best episode ever or just average.

but they didn’t say mondas when talking about the cybermen they said the name of the galaxy they came from so they may have come from there. also they’re mark 2 versions of the RTD cybermen. great episode by the way

They had a weakness to certain cleaning fluids and gold like the Mondasians, weaknesses that haven’t been seen in the Cybus Industries versions. That implies these Cybermen do hail from Mondas.

Well in “Resurrection of the Daleks” during a battle scene their quick to beat a retreat when their taking casulties and then use human mercenaries instead & one asks for “mercy” from River Song in “big bang” at end of series 5 when it realises its weapons & shields arented recharged unlike hers.So I think they can have at times cowardly charateristics in the sense that all bullies are cowards when forceably confronted.

There’s a difference between cowardly and strategically intelligent. They wouldn’t have wanted to unnecessarily lose Daleks when they had more mobile clone troopers to send instead reason, and the Dalek begged for mercy in The Big Bang was because it knew it was the last Dalek left, and without it, the Daleks would be extinct.

Back in the days of Star Trek: Voyager every other episode was a Borg one which became a tiresome Borgfest! Whilst not the same situation, I think it is time they retired the Cybermen/Daleks for a few years. The drivel that was “Nightmare In Silver” was the lowest point for me this season, apart from the obviously shining performance from Warwick Davies. He at least came over as natural & actually seemed to belong in that place. Harking back to JNT he managed the surprise & awe in Doctor Who – All we get now is the ‘NEXT TIME’ slot which give’s everything away, pictures leaked months ahead, stuff in the RT – That most of the time the episodes are already known……..

Well said Radburn. Much overused and in some pretty dire stories too – which is unforgiveable. I did like the speed of the cyberman though. That was a good upgrade.
The story itself could have been good. The basis was there but the execution was poor. It felt rushed, jumpy, unfinished and too much of a story crammed into one episode. I feel it would have helped itself to be spread out over two episodes. The kids were dire (what was the point?), the ‘soldiers’ were weak and annoying, whilst the Doctor overacted. I must admit I do like Clara though (and not just because shes so attractive). I found myself thinking that it would be good if she was really Susan (not that it’ll happen)and could hang around a bit.
Did anyone else get the impression that they could be setting up a regeneration?

I was kind of let down by this episode. The kids did nothing in this episode, and the CyberPlanner acted too emotional. Matt Smith did come across as very sinister, however, he should’ve been more emotionless in his performance. The story itself was intriguing, and the side characters were very enjoyable. The new Cybermen come across as sinister and threatening, but did nothing for the later part of the episode. It was much less than I was expecting, but not bad either. 5/10

      May 13th, 2013 - 8:16pm

My opinion has improved, I give it a 7/10 now. It did succeed in making the Cybermen threatening again, and the whole story reminded me of Tomb of the Cybermen without being too similar. Also, the Doctor’s comments about the Cybermen’s weaknesses to cleaning fluid and gold proves that these are the Cybermen who hailed from Mondas. And Big D, if they’re going to have children in the story, then they should give them something to do.

I heard that in terms of the origins of the Cybermen, the Cybus Cybermen and the Mondas Cybermen encountered each other and upgraded themselves into each other, hence where the mixture of the two comes from.

I wasn’t expecting Nightmare in Silver to be something like The Doctor’s Wife I mean like a great story either because it was written by Neil Gaiman I thought it would be the best Cyberman story of the new series or best ep of S7. I can understand why some people don’t like and I do admit they should have been seen more but what I’m happy is that the Cybermen were deadlier and I think so far this is the most dangerous they’ve been in Nu Who. I was also very happy with the cliffhanger.

I love DW cause of what it is but I do admit that the eps of S7 have been rushed not all but some of them they need to bring back the 2 parters or lengthen the eps. I’m certainly looking forward to the finale but worried.

I loved it, scary stuff and some amazing ideas I am kicking myself for not having thought of.

The Cybermen I don’t think have ever been so threatening. The Doctor/CyberDoctor struggle was interesting because it really felt like two different characters (Matt Smith, that was amazing).

A minor nitpcik or two: I would have preferred Clara to have hit the Cyberman with the mace, that would have been a great moment. And the Cybermen are still stomping and have that cheesy 2006 signature theme ❗ Was disappointed by that.

Average episode. Excited at first about the theme park but the scale of it just didn’t materialise on screen. The kids kinda entered and left the episode all too easy? Cybermen new touches were good, especially the freeze slow motion and speed up, very good.

That was amazing and unexpected, never thought they could move so fast.

You know the measure of a good Cybermen/Dalek story is that you are siding against them; you want the Cybermen to lose.

A bad story will have you wanting to see them more and not feeling a threat off them.

If this is Doctor Who for the 50th year then I am afraid it’s the year I stop watching. The one word that sums up this years crop is ‘Rushed’. The movie of the week format just does not work. There is just to much going on and crammed in. The writing has been really poor and the original premise of the show and the main character has been eroded away until it might as well not be called Doctor Who. Add to that the return of the Graham Williams / Douglas Adams ‘humour’ and slapstick acting and we are at the end of the line as far as I and the dwindalling overnight audience Re concerned.

Moffat and Smith must go now no a complete reboot is required ASAP.

Richard T and old time fan of classic Doctor Who – who is longing for a return of the old Doctor and Companion relationship and better written shows that showcase the writing not the effects budget.

Richard Thomas, i agree with you. When Matt was first cast as the Doctor, i thought “great, he looks like he’s going to be a dark version of the Doctor”. I was hoping for something similar to Ecclestone’s Doctor. (don’t get me wrong, i loved Tennant, i just thought he over acted sometimes). The 11th Doctor is ok, the scripts Matt is given are terrible though. And i’m sick of all this ‘movie week’ rubbish. It’s becoming like Torchwood – Americanised.
      How to fix Doctor Who:
      – Scrap this whole ‘movie week’ think
      – Bring back two parters
      – Discard any sexual tension between Doctor/companion
      – Get a better head writer (Moffat has already proven he’s not up to the job)

I am 15 years old. I have watched Doctor Who since it came back in 2005, and have also seen lots of the classics. 2013 is supposed the most superb year of Doctor Who so far for the 50th anniversary, but it is just getting worse and worse. Ever since 2010, series 5, Doctor Who has gone downhill . The Doctor acts like a grinning idiot for 90% of the time, the story lines are unclear and not of a high standard, classic enemies like the Daleks and Cybermen are not getting good stories; Asylum of the Daleks was meant to have every type of Dalek back,it did n’t, and I was hoping that Nightmare in Silver was finally going to explain the relation ship between the Cybus Cybermen and the original Cybermen. Where are these new Cybermen even from? BBC please restore Doctor Who to a solid Sci Fi show suitable for all ages. Thank You

Richard I applaud your post. I honestly couldnt have put it better myself. Its like you read my mind. Your views reflect mine exactly. My family cant understand why I still watch it but having watched every Doctor since 1963 I feel obliged to continue. I think they feel sorry for me when, after every episode now, I have that look of disappointment.
I like Clara though and really hope they dont start down that lovey dovey, sentamentalist road that theyve gone down with every companion since it restarted.
Lets get back to a stronger, older, darker Doctor who has strong writing behind him rather than glossy effects with little or no substance.

One of the worst of all time. The acting was third rate, as was the dialouge. Smith was a absolute joke. As for the Cybermen, well they were as bad as ever, hopeless. The one good thing was that Strax, Jenny and Vastra didn’t appear to drag this down even further. A joke.

If you don’t like Matt Smith, the Cybermen or Jenny, Vastra and Strax then I don’t understand why you are watching the series at the moment. I can understand being a fan of other eras and not this one, but simply watching it now to criticize it is just silly. Sorry if I’ve misjudged you and I do respect you’re opinion, but this is how you come across.

It’s like supporting a football team, no matter how bad they get, as a fan you still watch it. There are hardly any places where criticism of the new series is allowed, usually the average episode is given a 10/10 by fans, while being touted as BAFTA wining stuff by the press. In fact the current era is badly written, badly acted, played for laughs, babyish, while at the same time having crude references chucked in. The Buffy era of everyone being a smart arse is tired and dull. This is not just for doctor who but alot of modern films.(Marvel) People seem to like this though, so I loose. Cheers.

      May 12th, 2013 - 10:41am

What can I say one of the best episodes this season, now they have got rid of Amy and Rory , it’s time the cyber men got a proper upgrade, they only let down was the kids.
To say Moffat should go is a bit sad, I love the classic stories and also love the new, it’s all about moving with the times. Having a proper defined relationship between companion and doctor helps make the stories stronger.
As fans we cannot go backwards we must go forward, it has to be interesting for the children of today or it will die out as it did at the end of the 80’s.
As a fan of of the show since the beginning I have seen alot of changes, not all great, but it’s kept this show going 50 years. You know the next doctor just could be a new favourite

    • KORSAIR

      May 12th, 2013 - 12:12pm

@Moosey, I’m not knocking Moffat nor demanding his booting out,the man is a great writer (Blink,Empty Child etc)it’s just that he seems to making Dr Who to please himself and not the viewers, people are stopping watching it my two boys definately have. I think the format needs to be changed all this mysterious companion nonsense has to stop,we need to get back to traditional Dr Who,get rid of eye candy Clara and start pleasing the viewers (not just the fans)full respect to Matt Smith if he wasn’t such a good actor a fair few of the recent stories could have been a lot worse. @Booboo I agree about classic who totally maybe a few classic type stories would help improve things, and before anyone starts jumping all over me for my opinions I’ve been a fan since the the show started (1963)and actually feel guilty saying anything bad about the show.

  • The Moffat Paradox

    May 11th, 2013 - 9:06pm

At last proper Cybermen that hark back to the classic era including a better sounding voice.

Just shows though with the Cybernites instead of Cybermats how the Cybermen/Star Trek’s Borg concepts have pinched from each others ideas. From the concept of beings established in Who that seek perfection with cyber implants to Star Treks additional idea of Nano probes to create Borg and the ability to adapt to weapons and upgrade themselves that’s been given a new take with Cybernites for the presumably Mondas Cybermen.

It would be fascinating to see the Daleks take on these Cybermen because in the characterisation of the Daleks they can also seemingly be cowardly and not react well if they know their up a against a foe that is more than a match for them.(No longer better at dying as Dalek Sec taunted in Doomsday?) If these Cybermen can adapt/upgrade to Dalek weaponry you can imagine the Daleks starting to panic especially if they can now turn non humanoids into Cybermen so you could maybe have cyberised Daleks. The Daleks would have to really keep as with the chess theme in the episode several moves ahead of them.

What a waste of lovely Tamzin Outhwaite though. Killing her character off like that. Its not done!

the best episode ever was the rings of akhaten then it was cold war then it changed to journey to the centre of the tardis and know it is nightmare in silver.

the only one I was disappointed in was bells of st john. after watching nightmare in silver and saw the name of the doctor trailer I was scared that strax might die.
I hope Madame vastra or jenny flint or strax do not die because seeing that trailer I thought he was going to die.

I also felt sorry for the boy he did not get a present but the girl did. plus if they do they will come back with a bigger badder adventure and more scary. there was only one seen that scared me that was the seen when the boy went to switch the light on.

Neil Gaiman has done it again. Love the brand new Cybermen, great nods to the past with the Cyber Planner making a comeback since 1978’s ‘The Invasion’ and seeing the previous 10 Doctors faces which I don’t think any of us where expecting.

The new Cybermen are brilliant, and I welcome them as a refreshing change considering the 2006 ones where getting old and boring. The new abilities are quite impressive.

I certainly like the new Cybermites. Guess it’s R.I.P. Cybermats and hello to these new little fellas that I hope will make future appearances, plus it seems the Mondas Cybermen are BACK – FOR – GOOD !!!!!! πŸ˜€

    Nerd Rage review time!
Honestly? It could have been WAY better. The boy was the dullest character EVER. His voice and lines just made it so dull! The Punishment platoon was an interesting idea, but maybe could have been explained more. And Porridge as the Emperor? I liked it, an Original plot twist.
The new Cybermen really cool. The design was nice and sleek, but I think he heads could have been a bit better. The Upgrading was a great idea, giving the Cybermen the truly ‘Unbeatable’ in their name. When they all got deactivated though, that was a bit lame. Oh yeah, and the detachable parts was SO COOL! Truly a worthy upgrade. Shame they all got Dead :(.
And the Cybermites were an interesting touch, certainly a upgrade for the Cybermats πŸ˜€
Overall, 6/10. Certainly would have been better if there was more time. But Meh, what can ya do? I just hope we see them again.

I must say, the episode was good. They could have just got a lot more out of it. The cry for a two-parter is a wise one. Which episodes of New Who stand out the most in your mind? The Stolen Earth? The Parting of the Ways? The Age of Steel? The Empty Child? What do these have in common? They are 2-parters. And that adds a little something which makes a big episode into a grand one. And that is what the Cybermen needed to make their grand return.

I liked Nightmare in Silver. It made the cyberman a threat, when before in new who they were not even dangerous. Wish they’d have gotten rid of the stomping, but nothing is perfect. This episode didn’t really need a story in my opinion, because it was more about bringing the Cyberman to life. Over all, loved it. The Cybermites are actually creepy to me. Laughed at the scene where the Cyberplanner told Clara she was beautiful πŸ˜›

The only time I’ve been scared of them since Attack of the Cybermen is The Pandorica Opens when the remains of one attacks Amy.

I’ve been a committed fan of dr who since I was a little girl, I’m now 22 and have to say since David left as the 10th dr the writing has really gone down hill. It’s a shame, really is..

Really? Matt Smith is a much better actor, I don’t miss DT’s over-acting.

I agree that it’s gone uphill, but I don’t blame David Tennant, I blame Russel T Davies. I always felt his finales went downhill after Series 3, the quality of the episodes after Series 1, and out of his companions I only really liked Martha and maybe Captain Jack. Steven Moffat wrote most of my favorites from the RTD era, and his Asylum of the Daleks, The Name of the Doctor, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, and The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang are among my all-time favorites.

average for me. the new cyberman are quite good, but i felt the way the first half was executed was all quite jumbled up. the bit before the titles was too quick and not very dramatic like JTTCOTT, and outhwaite’s character died too quickly. the kids in there i thought were abit pointless, and there any good co stars. when the cyber army came it got a lot better.

I can understand major critics and reviewers finding this story rubbish as there wasn’t much of a story, but here are the reasons I thought it was good:
If you think about it from a story view, you will find yourself hating it, but this episode wasn’t about story. It was about bringing back the cybermen and making them actually have some useful features, beautifully displayed here. Cybermites are so much better than cybermatts, the new instant upgrade feature is cool (if a little bit too much like the Borg) but yea, next time we see them I am sure it will have a story, they just wanted to display the new features here πŸ˜€
