I was unsure when I heard Capaldi was to be the new Doctor but I am won over completely. He makes a refreshing change and the humour is well written. Matt Smith never did it for me (sorry Matt) with just the occasional good episode but this season is looking very good indeed.

I felt it was a very fun episode, which is a nice change of tone after the darkness of Deep Breath and Into the Dalek. For me, a lot of the appeal of Doctor Who comes from the fun of each adventure. This was definitely a fun one. The plot was simple with decent foreshadowing, the dynamic between the Doctor and Robin Hood never failed to amuse me, Clara continues her trend of being a more consistent character from the previous three episodes, the Sheriff was a bit campy, but fun nonetheless, the robots were menacing until they were defeated by dishes, and the darker Twelfth Doctor fit in surprisingly well. I wasn’t expecting much from this episode, but Mark Gatiss delivered, and like The Unquiet Dead, Victory of the Daleks, Night Terrors, and Cold War before it, Robots of Sherwood is a very enjoyable episode to me. 9/10.

I know the title ‘Robot of Sherwood’ gave away the fact it wasn’t likely to be a very dark episode but as Mark Gatiss was the writer, had high hopes it would be decent enough.(Eg.The unquiet dead/Cold war)

Good points: For me Peter Capaldi is really coming into his own as the Doctor, enjoyed his portrayal of the timelord, especially the opening scene with the Doctor and Clara in the Tardis.

Period setting in the story was nice, great scenery and Ben Miller was quite good as the sheriff.

Bad points: Poor plotting, the resolution of this story with the golden arrow fired at the ship was awful. Laughably bad.
So many modern Dr Who stories seem to gloss over sense and logic just to reach the writer’s desired ending.

For me this story as a whole was fairly dire.
I’ve watched Dr who since Tom Baker arrived on our screens and while I’m not going away anytime soon, if all the stories were of this calibre I would probably give up watching pretty quick.

I think what everyone is forgetting is that doctor who still needs to appeal to kids as it is them who are going to keep it going into the future and sell the toys. A lighter ep like that one is something that could easily be role played on playgrounds i mean swordfighting with a spoon two heroes etc meaning although us older fans may call it a light ep kids will finally start to warm too the old scary man who has taken over from their doctor.

I’m more annoyed by them cutting a scene which was a pivotal plot point ~ It wasn’t until I actually found out later what had been cut, that the episode then made sense. I sincerely hope that it is re-instated for the box set or at least a deleted scene? I’m just wondering what a child of 5 might make of this childhood memory when 15 years later at college they find out the ACTUAL resolution of the episode?

a big scene was cut robin chops the sheriffs head of during the sword fight and it rolls on the floor and speaks revealing him to be part human part robot – he then puts his head back on and the fight continues

It was a light, fun episode and very reminiscent of The Time Warrior. I like the new dynamic between The Doctor & Clara. Peter Capaldi has taken The Doctor in a whole new direction and you get the sense that his Doctor is destined for some very dark times on his journey. The nod to Patrick was wonderful!

everything keeps saying its becoming the clara show, and i have to agree in some respects
in the name of the doctor, she saved the doctor, picked his tardis, and is now the reason he is alive
in the day of the doctor, she persuaded them to save gallifrey (as it says on her page on the bbc dr who site)
and in the time of the doctor, it is her who persuades the time lords to give the dr new lives.

so in that respect it is the clara show, but now i think that is changing. she was great in deep breath, and proved she can fend for herself

      You have made my point.
      She is fending for herself.
She is a companion to a
      weak and vascillating Doctor.

      It is the Clara show!!

Oh, that’s odd; my family were complaining that she doesn’t really do anything, despite having seen all the episodes you just mentioned.

No matter how blinding the evidence is, there will always be people who doubt, eh…

    • RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND

      September 7th, 2014 - 5:16pm

I agree she didn’t do much in series 7, apart from the time stream thing ‘which she had to do,’ but i do disagree with the fact that she is the reason the doctor is alive, past present and future. it’s way too much for a companion.
i don’t think capaldi is weak, but i think he will make her grow up as she has realised he isn’t always going to go and rescue her, so i hope she becomes less of a damsel

  • Mrewanwatson

I thought that the episode was rushed, but there were so many scenes that went on for too long, which they could have developed the plot with.

    If that makes sense.

Thought compared to especially last weeks episode this was no more than OK.An example of maybe playing on a lower key before starting after some middling episodes to ratch up the drama again.

Dont agree with criticisms of Mark Gattis as though not particularlly enamoured by this episode I personally liked “Victory Of The Daleks”,thought alongside “The Nightmare In Silver”his”Cold War”was the best episode of series 7 and that this “An Adventure In Time And Space” 50th anniversary tribute about the series beginnings was a masterpeice.

I did enjoy last nights episode as I enjoyed other mark gatiss episodes e.g cold war

They should have kept the ‘Robin hood and his merry men’ mythical to the point that they existed not in truth but by another form.Did they have to tread carefully as not to upset the tourist board. Its still pseudo historical whether he existed or not. Not gatiss’ best. That to date is still ‘The unquiet dead’. Nice parting shot with the arrow at the end.

The idea was that Robin was real and would become a myth, and that the Doctor who is also a fictions character is played as real within the series and has his own mythical qualities.

I for one enjoyed this episode and am, so far, pleased with season 8. When capaldi made reference to not being Claras boyfriend in Deep Breath, I let out a sigh of relief. We need to move on from the young, arms waving, spinning and running doctors who’s companions swoon to there every word. Capaldi is a return to the doctors of old, and a welcome one at that.

It was another Mark ‘Inconsistent’ Gatiss episode = OK.
It was really funny in places, but I didn’t particularly like it. I thought at the end of Deep Breath ‘woah, dark Doctor’, similar to the War Doctor. Into the Dalek was just terrible, and this … was probably still my favourite episode of the series. There was waaay too much focus on Clara, and the end made me cringe and hide behind the sofa for a different reason. It was like a sitcom.
I would have rather seen the Ice Warrior Hives!

I have to say, I thought that this was an ok episode. I’d put in in the catagry of ‘silly’ episodes along with “Delta and the Bannermen” etc. I think it’s just one to watch and not think too hard about, other wise the script could possibly fall apart!

I agree there. I thought that with a more sensible Doctor, the show might actually have a snidge more sensibility, but no. Swordfights with spoons, gold plates to destroy robots. And lastly…. the Doctor was wrong!

I think it is too early for lightweight episodes.
Capaldi hasn’t established his character yet.
Light episodes merely make him look
ridiculous. The one title that I haven’t seen anyone use to
describe him on these boards is Time Lord.
He asks Clara: Am I a good man? The real
question is am I a Time Lord?

      1. Clara hasn’t done much outside of the “of the Doctor” trilogy, and even that hasn’t really upstaged the Doctor.
      2. Danny Pink is clearly a very different character from Rory, and I seriously doubt that they’ll be like another Amy and Rory.
      3. What was wrong with Amy and Rory?!? They both grew, developed, and in Amy’s case, matured over the course of their adventures with the Doctor.

Well. I honestly have no idea what to think of it. If Id been watching an episode of Blackadder or Maid Marion I would have really enjoyed it. But Doctor Who?

Very funny in places but also very bitty.

Love Clara but too much emphasis on her for my liking. There was also never any real sense of threat. Casting Ben Miller as the Sheriff of Nottingham?

One final thing (and I stand ready to be corrected if it was my hearing wrong) but did the Doctor actually use the term “Oh god” on two or three occassions? If so, when has the Doctor ever called upon a deity and especially when in previous episodes he virtually denied any such existance. A bit picky perhaps but still, not great script writing if I heard right.

Yes, I wish there were more near-death scenes like in End Of The World in series 1, Rose was about to get burnt alive by the sun screen thing, with the doctor saving her last-minute.

Or in Partners in Crime where Donna was about to fall, but swung into a brick wall. THAT was humor, not stupid stuff like “here’s my spoon”.

    • Dalek The Supreme

      September 8th, 2014 - 3:41pm

The Doctor wasn’t joking about it being a spoon, he was confident in his ability to wield the spoon. That’s not being stupid, that’s being awesome, especially considering he actually disarmed Robin Hood with it. You’re saying the Doctor’s confidence in his ability to wield a spoon is more stupid than fart-joke monsters or aliens made of fat?
The Doctor’s exclaimed using the word “God” before, and in The Seeds of Death (a Second Doctor story), he exclaimed “Oh my heavens!”. If you live in/visit one place long enough, you tend to pick up it’s mannerisms and phrases, and the Doctor visits Earth more than any other planet in the universe. Honestly, why does something like that even matter???
