What Did You Think of The Bells of Saint John?

What Did You Think of The Bells of Saint John?

The Doctor’s search for Clara Oswald brings him to modern day London, where wifi is everywhere. Humanity lives in a wifi soup.

But something dangerous is lurking in the signals, picking off minds and imprisoning them.

As Clara becomes the target of this insidious menace, the Doctor races to save her and the world from an ancient enemy.

Now that the 1st episode of series 7b has aired in the UK what did you think?, was it the best episode ever or just average.

Nice to have a sassy, feisty, quick witted companion for a change. Very silly, banal dialouge with the typical innuedo thrown in, which is just jarring considering the rest of the banter is so childish. A non event as far as storytelling goes. Action set peices shoe-horned in for the sake of it. The newspapers were so harsh on McCoy back in the day but now this is considered BAFTA worthy stuff? I think this is because it was an old series by 1987 and now it is seen as cool.

didn;t like it guys. the term spoonheads was only used once. the villains were meek and bad. i didn;t like the use of simeon. the end with kizlet was confusing. there wasn’t much action don’t think it was great for clara. she should’ve just gone with him at the end… why not? although i didn;t like it, it had good stucture and ties.

the old ones are the best. i am going off doctor who definitely. and plus, the spoonhead things were pointless and in my opinion too scary for that time slot.

Why didn’t she just randomly go off with a man to explore time and space without a moment’s thought? People might want to sort some things out say some goodbyes and the like. It makes the character seem more real.

No action? He rode a motorbike through London and up the Shard!

Plus Simeon wasn’t in it. His face was used by the Great Intelligence after The Snowmen but we are yet to find out any more it yet. Well we’ve been waiting 45 years and we still don’t really have a clue what it is…

    • RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND

the motorbike was the only action there was! Plus Pond ran away on her wedding night, so it has happened before. But suppose she is a nanny so I’ll respect your point.

not good guys. the story was a copy of the idiots lantern. not much action. the term ‘spoonheads’ was only used once, the villains were terrible and meek, the ending was bad and confusing. why can’t clara just go with him? they are promising too much. i don’t think it was the best start for clara mark 3 also. i am going off who. although the ep was bad, it had good links and structure.

Not a bad episode – I enjoyed the dialogue between Clara and the Doctor and the in jokes – the “Doctor Who?” joke was taken even further and I thought the TARDIS at Earls Court reference was fun…both were pretty much breaking the 4th wall. But the plot was nothing special…in fact it was almost a cross between The Idiots Lantern and Partners in Crime. 7/10.

By the way, did any one else notice Jenna Louise Coleman’s northern accent come through when she said the word “jump” in the final scene? πŸ™‚

I really enjoyed the episode. I agree the resolution was a bit quick, but it had the bike up the shard for the kids, a nice spooky concept, and an awesome new Tardis. And Matt Smith makes me smile. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Matt Smith was brilliant as always but Jenna-Louise Coleman makes me wonder if I can stomach any future episodes if she will be in them. I know that it is always hard to get into a new traveling companion but her acting is akin to fingernails on a chalkboard. Thus the dilemma, as I know she has a contract to continue to try and look like an actor for the rest of this season. To watch or not to watch. Sigh….

Hardly fair. JLC is a very capable and strong actor and has lifted the show just by bieng involved with it. Plus her capabilities have allowed for an instantly likeable character. Best companion since Donna.

It was good, the ending was slightly rushed though, otherwise, I think it was a great episode with interesting story arcs being set up. And Matt Smith as the Doctor… do I even need to explain how brilliant he is? I give it 8/10.

Anyone notice how when we first met Clara, the doctor was fascinated by how she could hack the Dalek network so easily? I know that it was because she was a Dalek but surely this is a link to how today we she first came back from the cloud data/Greater Intelligence, she learnt how to hack computers so easily?

Coincidence or is the story going to come full circle so that Clara’s end is back to when the Doctor first met her, and her death???

Not necessarily, in her mind she had barricaded herself against invading darleks. who knows what else she had repressed.

      March 31st, 2013 - 11:11am

Maybe the daleks removed all her memories and replaced them with a new scenario or story, which Is that she crashed, personally I don’t want this to happen as I want a companion going and living a normal life, with a chance of return. Since the shows revival only one companion has lives a normal life, which is Martha:
      Rose-different universe
      Donna-memory wiped
      Amy and Rory-weeping angel

    • Coming Full Circle

      April 6th, 2013 - 4:37pm

Amy and Rory could be in the same alternate universe as Rose and the mortal clone Doctor. Obviously their separated by the fact their in different times but could have communicated with each other or time traveled to each other (Theory behind this is that in Rose and clone Doctor’s universe time travel wrist watches are available, like Captain Jack’s and also if anyone noticed Clara’s from the Dalek episode?)

I was a bit unsure of the episode at first but about half way through i started to love it and loved the wee clever Moffat stuff. The only thing that i really didn’t like about the episode is that the Great Intelligence were in it; I like the GI but i didn’t want them to feature in another episode. Though Moffat was successful at making the spoonheads/wi-fi scary; Miss Kizet was awesome. If i had to rate it, i would give it 7.5/10.

Half way through I deducted it was the GI that was behind it and actually I think it is a good move on Moffat to add a main antagonist. I only hope that he’ll do it a little more subtle than with the cracks, let a few episodes without the GI. If he can pull it off like with the tenth and martha jones where you had a vaguer hints and nudges towards the Master than we could see some very interesting episodes.

  • Matt smithy

    March 30th, 2013 - 9:06pm

Thought it was great! obviously the story wasn’t developed much and was quite basic, but arn’t all episodes that introduce new companions? remember they had 45 minutes to introduce the doctor to clara, AND to tell a story as some viewers may just be tuning in to see what the show is like, and don’t want too see the doctor find out who clara is. think about it, “rose” just introduced rose with a side note of an auton invasion (solved with a vile of water with blue food coloring), smith and jones was introducing mather/doctor (with a side note of the hospital being taken too the moon, searched, then put back) ect.. for an intro episode, I thought the story was well done asnd deeper than other openers! series 6 and 7A don’t count, no new companions were introduced πŸ˜€

not really, as its not. we learn more about her and who she is (and really it is based on river’s story), but we have already been introduced to her and desided if we love or hate the character. we are always learning new thngs about his companions, and series 6 just happened to have us learn who she is πŸ™‚
