What Did You Think of The Doctor Who Episode Cold War?
What Did You Think of Doctor Who – Cold War?
The Doctor and Clara land on a damaged Russian Submarine in 1983 as it spirals out of control into the ocean depths.
An alien creature is loose on board, having escaped from a block of Arctic ice. With tempers flaring and a cargo of nuclear weapons on board, it’s not just the crew but the whole of humanity at stake!
Now that the 3rd episode of series 7b has aired in the UK what did you think?, was it the best episode ever or just average.
ROB STATE
April 20th, 2013 - 2:09pmCold War was frustrating in some ways. the scene was set up perfectly, seeing the ice warrior smash out of the block of ice, was genuinely thrilling, and the atmosphere spot on. but although i loved the fact the ice warrior escaped his armour, the rubber hand on the characters heads was very poor, it looked like something you would expect from 1980s Who, and surely it could have been realised in a more convincing manner?
i could have forgiven Gatiss everything if the ending had been half decent. series 7b so far has lacked real punches in this area, Even with the limits of a 40 minute episode, they should all incorporate – a double kick ending, where you think its been solved, but, then the rug is pulled from under the character’s feet again….it’s just been too easy, and too much sonic screwdriver. but i live in hope it can only get better, as far as im concerned.
CG
April 18th, 2013 - 11:10amDid the sonic screwdriver actually turn red (red setting) during the late section of the episode or was it just the light of the submarime.
If so, awesome, they might release a revised 11th doctors sonic with red setting.
Tardisn’t
April 18th, 2013 - 9:25pmit did go red, yes.

April 18th, 2013 - 5:38amGood Episode… any show with out Amy pond is a good episode.
block
April 19th, 2013 - 8:57pmi quite liked amy pond but the new actor is awesome!!!
Dalek Smith
April 17th, 2013 - 8:57pmeverything good except the finish that is the trouble with modern who too much stuff not enough time we need to go back to classic roots and have more time to explain things and have good endings
time and relotive dimens
April 17th, 2013 - 5:17pmit was boring.

April 17th, 2013 - 12:50pm“Hungry Like the Wolf”! (Perhaps the “BAD WOLF”!)
Tony Who
April 18th, 2013 - 7:03amI think the Bad Wolf is gone. No more Rose, no more the 10th.
cyberman2
April 19th, 2013 - 5:53pmwrong the 10th doctor and rose are coming back for the 50th anniversary special but i don’t think they’re doing bad wolf anymore
Onewar
April 17th, 2013 - 12:27amI thought it was terrible. I think that if doctor who doesnt change now, its going down hill. I think it has lost its spark and the quirkiness that matt smith had with karen and arthur has gone. And the Clara mystery, i mean come on! they are gonna go on forever with it but we need to realise that its not gonna be able to go on forever

April 16th, 2013 - 6:34pmIn my opinion series 3 with Martha was the best – in terms of the quality of writing. You can’t even compare these new episodes with stories like the Shakespeare Code and Human Nature…it’s shocking how poor the writing, directing and editing has become.
This episode was way too cliche. If I had never seen any Doctor Who before this, I might have enjoyed it. But RTD managed to pack excitement and heart-breaking emotion into consistently good plots. Excellent directing. No loose ends. This series just cannot compare 🙁
Doctor Stu
April 16th, 2013 - 8:48pmI agree, i watched bad wolf and the parting of the ways yesterday and noticed how amazing they are compared to series 7
Dalek The Supreme
April 17th, 2013 - 3:01pmI think RTD started out alright, but from Series 2 on, for every Human Nature or Doomsday, there was at least two Love and Monsters and Fear Hers. As for the Moffat era, I think for every Almost People there was at least two or three Pandorica Opens and Vincent and the Doctors. In other words, I think the story quality has improved since Moffat took over and Series 5 is my favorite season, Classic or New.

April 18th, 2013 - 3:12amVincent and the Doctor was fantastic, I’m amazed people don’t like it.
Scott the Vigil
April 29th, 2013 - 7:56amIn my opinion, Series Two was the best. RTD was so awesome.it would be good if he and SM co-wrote the 50th.
John Smith
April 16th, 2013 - 2:30pmThe Cold War is by far the best episode of this series to date but it did have it’s cons. I found the creature inside of the Ice Warrior’s armour (even though we haven’t seen all of it) to be kind of silly. The outside of the Ice Warriors are big and tough and yet the creature inside is a long fingered, oddly shaped lizard of some kind. It’s kind of underwhelming. Almost like one of the Martians from War of the Worlds. Ha, isn’t that funny? I was hoping that underneath the armour would be a big hulking brute (a green sontaran of sorts) but instead It’s just another Dalek. A tiny little bloke sitting inside a big suit of awesome! Don’t get me wrong, I love the Daleks but I honestly just think that the Daleks and ONLY the Daleks should be that kind of enemy. The Ice Warriors deserve more. They shouldn’t be crawling up ceilings and grabbing people by the heads, they should be pounding through walls and being proper warriors! Where is the honour behind all these legends of the tall, green warriors from the snow capped plains of mars when really they are just another blob in a suit?
doctorwhoxxxxxxxxxxxx
April 16th, 2013 - 6:12pmit was alright not great i didnt think it had a great story line to be honest they should do an eposoide where time catches up with reality and all the comapions (most of them) and they help fight all the creatures that there have been that will be awesome.
doctorwhoxxxxxxxxxxxx
April 16th, 2013 - 6:15pmthey should do an eposode when river and the doctor get married but something goes wrong…. dont know what but something
Dalek The Supreme
April 17th, 2013 - 3:03pmI think it might be the best story of the season so far, and doctorwhoxxxxxxxxxxxx, that kinda already happened in The Wedding of River Song, only something went wrong before they got married.

April 15th, 2013 - 11:04pmI have too say that for me was one of the best mat smith episodes so far. They did the ice warriors proud. They stuck to the past ethos. Kept the ice warrior as the bad guy but showed a good side to them, (same as in the pertwee era) Im glad they developed the alien a bit, didnt show the complete alien inside the suit but showed us the face. My only quibbles were the apparent ability of the tardis to translate from the other side of the planet and the glib ending, (any chance of a lift, (chortle chortle went the russian cold war submariners) This is the cold war, in a russian sub! wouldnt the russians wonder why one of there nuclear missile carrying subs suddenly went awol across the planet. However..I REALLY ENJOYED THIS EPISODE!
You can tell mark gattis is a classic fan. Keep it up mark!
DOCTOR WHO ONE
April 15th, 2013 - 4:59pmDespite what Joseph Kerr wrote earlier, I’m actually rather glad we finally know what an Ice Warrior actually looks like under the helmet.
It’s not every day you get to see what a particular villain looks like underneath their helmet / mask, like if you take Darth Vader for example, how many fan’s surely must have been dead excited about seeing Anakin Skywalker’s face underneath that mask, probably imagining an evil being underneath, only to find a sad old man who looked like he would not hurt a fly with a head that over time ended up looking like an egg with a crack at the top and looking somewhat grey in colour.
DOCTOR WHO ONE
April 15th, 2013 - 5:02pmThinking about it, I would also if they filmed this scene that was never shown in ‘The Stolen Earth / Journey’s End’ which would have shown Julian Bleach as a pre-accident Davros in a flashback sequence, cos if they did film it but never used it then I think it’s time it got posted onto YouTube, and should have been used as a DVD extra for the series 4 boxset, I would have loved to have seen that 😀

Dalek The Supreme
April 17th, 2013 - 3:05pmI think it’s my second or third favorite Smith episode, outclassed only by The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang and maybe Vincent and the Doctor.
Harold Saxon
April 15th, 2013 - 1:10pmThis episode was really good, great cast & i loved the return of the ice warrior, well done all.
The Supreme Dalek
April 14th, 2013 - 7:02pmIn my opinion, the only word I can use to describe “Cold War” is BRILLIANT. I had never seen an episode with the Ice Warrior before, and I thought Skaldak was awesome and at some moments freaky, like when his hands came down from the ceiling.
I also loved the theme of the episode; it was in a submarine! The episode has made me more interested in them now. Anyway, the only thing I was dissapointed in was that I thought Clara would get lost/trapped in the submarine and The Doctor trying to find her, but oh well, the episode was still fantastic! 😀 10/10
Joseph Kerr
April 14th, 2013 - 5:13pmWell, at least we can all agree that this was a better episode than Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.
But personally, I think they ruined it when they revealed the actual Martian creature…
Geronimo2605
April 14th, 2013 - 6:11pmIce Warriors!!!!
Joseph Kerr
April 14th, 2013 - 10:43pmYes, I know 🙂
Personally, I think the actual image of an Ice Warrior underneath the armour should be left to speculation, rather than just show us.
I mean, they never did that in the classic series…

April 15th, 2013 - 7:31pmyes it is yet another great dw mystery ruined like who riversong was i just hope they never reveal the doctors name!
John Smith
April 16th, 2013 - 2:33pmThey better damn well not!!! If they do I think that about 95% of the world’s Dr Who fans will want to give Moffat a big slap to the face!
Joanne D
April 16th, 2013 - 6:44pmIt’s interesting actually. The Doctor in the original series was referred to by part of his his name (or nickname). You can go on the guide to have a look. (I won’t tell you in case you don’t want to know 🙂 It does suit him though). Although to be fair, it is never confirmed as his true, original name.
RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND
April 14th, 2013 - 5:03pmalso, when the spaceship came all the humans didn’t marvel much over it, and they didn’t even watch to see it fly away! also, the crew could still have russian accents, and the doctor can call the TARDIS via the sonic.
LEWIS
April 14th, 2013 - 3:19pmthis one was ok but the thing that gave it a downer for me was when Skaldak cam out of his shell I thought his arms were last miniut low budget and realy chesy I mean they just looked rubish
McGann is the Doctor
April 14th, 2013 - 3:27pmThose arms were creepy at first, but they got overused.
Okay Gatiss, it was scary the first time, you were pushing it the 2nd time, now it just looks silly.
But the bare Ice Warrior face, I thought , was creepy.
However, atleast the hands looked alien, they were long and only had two fingers, they don’t look like gloves, you know ? 😉
dalek eternal
April 14th, 2013 - 2:33pmloved this episode it was fantastic but has anyone noticed that theres been two episodes in a row involving songs i wonder if its linked to river song
McGann is the Doctor
April 14th, 2013 - 3:19pmThat does beg the question, would Russian sumariners of the cold war had access to western music ? I find that a tad unbelievable, never mind that we have a monster who is/isn’t a cyborg.

April 14th, 2013 - 4:31pmWestern music had already started to penetrate Eastern Europe in the early 80’s. Therefore, during 1984, Iron Maiden began to play “Behind The Iron Curtain” through the Eastern Bloc, at the Height of the Cold War. Playing in, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Hungary, becoming the first major Western band to do so.

April 17th, 2013 - 12:43pmAh, she was singing “Hungry Like the Wolf” (perhaps the “BAD WOLF”!)
Dalek The Supreme
April 17th, 2013 - 3:07pmRiver Song could be the “blonde girl in the shop” mentioned by Clara in The Bells of St. John!
