What Did You Think of The Doctor Who Episode Cold War?

What Did You Think of Doctor Who – Cold War?

The Doctor and Clara land on a damaged Russian Submarine in 1983 as it spirals out of control into the ocean depths.

An alien creature is loose on board, having escaped from a block of Arctic ice. With tempers flaring and a cargo of nuclear weapons on board, it’s not just the crew but the whole of humanity at stake!

Now that the 3rd episode of series 7b has aired in the UK what did you think?, was it the best episode ever or just average.

Maybe I should look back on every episode with Clara (oswin) Oswald in it in search of a play on words

It was really good. Though I don’t think that it was a good idea to slip in an easily- solved ending – surely if you came across an ice warrior with a growing greed for revenge reasoning with it wouldn’t help?

Yeah. Suddenly the doctor and Clara appear and help them as they sink just in time. I mean, how did they even know?

I agree, the start was even more rushed than Dinosaurs on a spaceship. You have the Doctor yelling, the russians yelling, clara yelling, and camera shaking, a barbie doll, water gushing in all over the place.etc

I said to my dad “I can’t get a word out of this.” Infact, all I could make out was “Viva Las Vegas !”

This episode was OK, there are a few flaws though.
    1) They had David Warner…DAVID WARNER, and he only had a relatively small part. If you’re going to get an actor like David Warner…give him a bigger part than a measley proffessor!
    2) The ice warrior took its helmet off. That kind of ruined the mystery for me, considering it looked basically like a silurian. The CGI for the ice warrior’s ‘true form’ was absolutely terrible. It looked like something from a cheap CBBC show. It should’ve been prosthetic makeup.

    Story was alright though. 6/10

      I agree.
The arms should’ve been the only part of its body that it visible when it takes off its armour. Also, as 3) you should add that the ending was similar to that of the power of three: he has a long conversation with this creature and then the rest is piece of cake. It would be an improvement if the ice warrior dies but the doctor finds out that he is still alive once he leaves the sub- or something like that.

I thought the CG face looked great, how lame would it have been to just see those cheap prosphetic hands that everyone says are so “Delightfully fake like classic Doctor Who”

I resent that statement, classic who may have looked foney at times but they ALWAYS tried to be as convincing and wierd as possible, 21st century who should never try to be fake on purpose ❗

I’m scared that 2014 will be another 2012, it will feel empty and pointless, like “Where do we go after that AMAZING last chapter ?” They will have to take Matt’s Doctor in a radical new direction, don’t try to out-perform the previous chapter, just try something different, maybe something slower ❓

It was great considering the plot and action and Skaldak ( who was freaky but awesome ) but the sub woud’ve exploded because of the depth and everything. Plus I don’t exactly LIKE Mark Gaties instead of Steven Moffat.

I also don’t think it was a GREAT idea to show the face of an ice warrior, plainly because people could of imagined it for their selves and maybe woud’ve kept it more interesting.

But, hey… this is Doctor Who. How can I NOT love it.

great story but it had its flaws.
    1. the doctor and clara are wet and are able to stand in the freezing cold arctic at the end

2.the submarine should have exploded under the pressure at that depth when it was flooding with water.

3.how did the doctor and clara speak Russian when the TARDIS was at the south pole.

but overall it was a very good story

I know it sounds sort of silly, but I LOVE the way they have shown the dates/places in the past few episodes, such as where it says the place at the start of this in the ice. I think they are all just very clever and they don’t stand out too much so you aren’t just focused on that!

probably because all the aliens spoke in lots of different languages

so the tardis might have just stuck to English

      April 14th, 2013 - 2:11pm

But remember in the impossible planet the writing on the wall wasn’t translated because it was too ancient. Or, possibly the tardis doesn’t like Clara because she’s not possible. It doesn’t know which Clara she is. Maybe.

      April 16th, 2013 - 12:23am

the whole translation explanation is dodgy and full of holes really, if you think about it too much.

So far, I think it was great, but I’m not sure. I don’t know how I feel about the acting, apart from the mains and Saldack (Who was great), but the mention of people being torn limb from limb was dark and certainly brought an element of fear. The moral dilemna that Saldack faced at the end was great, and proved that Ice Warriors aren’t too different from humans after all. Also, it was interesting seeing the Ice Warrior without his armour.

I loved it, absolutely amazing writing (a la Gatiss), and I like the new design of the Warriors. The only thing that held it back was that the voices, sadly, were below par. Some people might like them, but the Ss weren’t drawn out and the lysp was undetectable. I watch ‘The Seeds Of Death’ for the first time today and I ordered the DVD for today, so hearing those voices did let the new episode down for me. Other than that, absolutely stellar episode (ACE!!).

Having an accent would just let it down. You see, the tardis translator even deletes accents.

Yes well put. The lisp and the hisses were very distinctive, very well done in the old days. They sounded excellent (usual brilliant work for the sound department) Although this episode sounded cool it just wasn’t the same as the old voices and that’s a shame.

A deadly Martian warrior loose on a stricken nuclear sub at the height of the Cold War? That’s got to ooze tension and excitement with plenty of space for neat character development right? Well you’d think. What we got was a flaccid run of the mill yarn that plodded along to a conclusion along the lines of ‘oh I see your point, lets just forget this ever happened eh?’ David Warner popped up but might as well not have bothered for all the good his character did – we can only hope the Le Bon ditty is one if Moffat’s breadcrumbs to be savoured down the line, it certainly provided no sustenance here. And if the Tardis had buggered off at the first site of danger to the South Pole, how come the translation dohickey still worked. Two mundane eps on the trot with a ghost story to come are not filling me with confidence for unlocking the mystery of Clara or the 50th. Desperately hoping for a return to form.

didn’t like it. the plot was badly executed, clara passing out was an excuse to speed up time. the doctor should’ve landed when the ice warrior was already on the loose, and when the sub had sunk. the ice warrior out of it’s armour was pointless, and the trailer was misleading. someone said t looked like something from Monsters inc, whoever that was, i agree. the ice warrior wasn’t a great villain, it was disgusting the way he killed everyone. there wasn’t much mystery of the monster as it was revealed in the trailer and revealed in the ep really quickly. the dynamic between clara dn the doctor wasn’t the same as TBOSJ which is why i liked her. there weren’t many other good characters with a large part like last week’s Merry. Liam cunningham is a great actor but he was badly used. why on earth did clara ask the doctor if she was doing it right with the Ice warrior interrogation? that is just giving it away. it went a bit over the top, having the doctor with a barbie and quite frankly, last week was better.

This episode left me feeling pretty disappointed. The first two acts were decent enough; there was suspense, the effects were top notch, and there was great acting and a decent sense of genuine peril. However, then we got the the last part, which ruined the episode for me.
The first problem was the reveal of the ice warriors true face. On principal, they shouldn’t have done it. They should’ve kept a mystery. It didn’t help that the face wasn’t exactly the best piece of design doctor who’s seen. It looked painfully fake compared to the excellent visuals of the arctic and the sub.
The second problem was the ending itself. It didn’t feel like an ending. Skaldak was about to destroy the world, and then suddenly his assumption’s proved wrong and he goes. There was no resolution; it just happened. The characters had very little to do with it.
The first two thirds, as I said, were excellent, but the ending really let it down unfortunately.
4/10. Average. Luckily Hide looks good, and hopefully this was a one off low.
