Absolutely amazing! I am so glad I watched it in the cinemas, because the atmosphere was brilliant! As soon as David Tennant and Peter Capaldi made their first appearance, the crowd just went wild! Every now and then I would see someone lift their sonic screwdriver in the air and flash it! 😆

The special itself was excellent! Although I was expecting something different, it was still great. The Zygons were extremely awesome, but here is my question:

    What happened to the Zygons?

You could just tell that when they started with the original opening titles it was going to be a great one. I loved the Tom Baker and Peter Capaldi cameos, John Hurt was incredible!. I think I can guess at what next seasons arc is (maybe). Finding Galifrey

      November 24th, 2013 - 11:00am

perhaps they agreed to give the zygons a vortex manipulator so they could go back to the 70s, build a robot nessie and get beaten by the 4th doctor. Just a guess

The true 9th… Go watch the prequel “The night of the Doctor” and see why. Although the 9th Doctor is still the 9th “Doctor”, he is now the 10th incarnation and so on. John Hurt is the 9th incarnation but doesn’t refer to himself as the Doctor.

I loved John Hurt in that episode, He was funny and a proper classic doctor. Ten and eleven were talking about timey-wimey,geronimo and alloys and he had no idea what they were talking about. and when the three doctors were in a line-ten and eleven acting all cool and there was hurt not giving a care in the world! He was fantastic!

Also….what on earth was Tom Baker….?

I enjoyed it… But it wasn’t the fiftieth anniversary episode it should have been. It would have been a great anniversary episode for the new series, but as the episode for the history of the whole show, it fell a bit short. Tom Baker’s appearance was the only really special part. And I’m not entirely sure about the whole off to find Gallifrey biz. But hey ho, I’m sure lots of people think it as brilliant, and who’s going to argue with them?

That Dalek was part of the painting, and so removing it from the painting destroyed it as it wasn’t a real Dalek.

Well, it’s your own fault for expecting to much. They had to make a decision and stick with it. Sure they COULD have had those companions back, but they wouldn’t just for the sake of it or it would ruin the story. Plus Tom WAS playing the Doctor… a future Doctor reliving old faces… And it didn’t need a key villain. It’s the 50th anniversary. If it was a normal episode what would be the point? It’s just made for you to sit and thing “wow, I love this show that’s been around for 50 years” and “oh, that was a nice reference/cameo”

For some years now I’ve been wondering how Gallifrey was going to come back, and now it has, when the doctor finds it again. Loved the episode can’t wait for Christmas.so,e newspapers are slamming it,saying Moffat as done a Dallas shower scene, meaning all the previous episodes don’t mean a thing ,don’t they realise that with time travel you can do anything………..

So in this new reality Hurt is the 9th Doctor and Capaldi will be 10 sooooo…plenty more regenerations to go in this new doctor time line…our 10,11,12 (Ecclestone, Tennant, Smith) don’t exist on Capaldis time line as a doctor as he comes before them in a now changed reality…..FANTASTIC…..But I could have done with some RIVER SONG…

Both of you are wrong, I believe.
Moffat said at the 50th Anniversary Celebrations that he’s not re numbering the doctor, however, in theory John Hurt is the ninth doctor…
Before, he wasn’t referred to as ‘The Doctor’ but now after saving Gallifrey he has been referred to as the doctor… The ninth doctor.

Using the original title sequence was a nice way to pay homage to the shows first broadcast 50 years ago.

I reckon I’ll have to go back and watch the episode again to find all the references Moffat has thrown in!

The Doctor’s Wife, A good man goes to war, Night terrors, The Girl Who Waited, Closing Time isn’t too bad when you watch back over it for what it is, The wedding of River Song, and most of the others were all ok. Infact the only episodes I didn’t like were Curse of the black spot, Let’s kill Hitler and the God complex.

I can’t believe Moffat clearly has found away to bring back Gallifrey and the Time Lord’s [all is forgiven Moffat, all is forgiven !!].

The only problem I have with the special is the that Doctors 1 to 8 help out save Gallifrey, when they all came before the Time War, so how exactly the got involved is confusing for me at the moment, but it was a real treat seeing them all right at the end.

And oh yeah, how come Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor made a brief appearance ?. His Doctor don’t exist yet.

if you think about it, the only doctor that knew of what the three had done was matt smith’s so in turn that would mean that Capaldi’s Doctor would know also as he was after, and so he knew of the opportunity to help… as for the other doctors, all i can think, is that the Bad wolf(as im calling the weapon) must have created more time tunnels….
      well that’s what i think… lol

Nice Baker Cameo also… this special makes up for quite a weak series, i’ll just believe that he was spending to much time writing this….

I’m torn over the 50th. As a lifelong Whovian, there were parts that I loved and there were parts that I didn’t really care for all that much. I loved all of the Doctors being worked into the end, especially Hartnell as he’s always been one of my favorite incarnations of the Doctor. I loved the bantering between the Doctors. I loved the addition of Rose as Bad Wolf from her having absorbed the time vortex in the first series of the reboot. I loved that Clara has gone on to work as an educator. I love that Clara has a healthy friendship with the Doctor and that her life doesn’t revolve around him as opposed to many other recent companions who had very codependent relationships with him. I loved the addition of Jack’s vortex manipulator. There were a few gaping plot holes, especially inconstancies between The End of Time and the 50th… 10 and 11 already knew that Gallifrey wasn’t destroyed and was time locked, as seen previously in The End of Time. I really wish that we had gotten to actually see Jack. Why did Baker not ask Smith if he wanted a Jelly Baby?

And I almost forgot… Yes, I know that it has been mentioned before that the Doctor married Elizabeth I. I always assumed that was just a joke. How is it that Elizabeth I is in love with/married to the Doctor? Yet, at the end of The Shakespeare Code during the third series of the reboot, she claimed that the Doctor was her worst enemy and wanted to have him beheaded?

Gallifrey was destroyed in The End of Time, the 10th Doctor sent it back into the time war just before the War Doctor used the moment.
Elizabeth made the Doctor her sworn enemy because he abandoned her after they got married.
And Tom Baker didn’t offer the 11th Doctor a jelly baby because he ran out

@Anonymous – “The Shakespeare Code” is set in 1599, 37 years after the Doctor (accidentally) marries Elizabeth I, and then he does a runner and (presumably) doesn’t come back. Of course she’s mad at the Doctor.

The Day of The Doctor all I wanted from it was to tell a really good story and I’m very happy of how it’s turned out Matt David and John brilliant including Clara and Rose/Bad Wolf and to see Tom Baker. Love the Zygons hope to see them make future appearances

    Whoah. Amazing.
Laugh-out-loud moments, high action and intrigue. all with a healthy dollop of great emotional character acting.
The plot was tight (although I can imagine right away that there will be people asking what happened with the Zygons), and the pacing was superb.

I like the little bit where Tennant’s Doctor has a double-take moment when John Hurt’s mentions the ‘Bad Wolf Girl’. It could be a throwaway comment, or a hint. Either way…

Oh – and that 12-TARDIS solution? Brilliant.

One slightly off note for me, a personal thing, was seeing just how old and frail Tom Baker has become. He was MY Doctor, and to see him in this was thrilling and sad at the same time.
