What did you Think of The Girl Who Died?
Now that the highly anticipated fifth episode of series 9 has been aired what did you think? Was it everything you had hoped for or not what you expected
Captured by Vikings, the Doctor and Clara must help protect their village from Space Warriors from the future: the Mire. Outnumbered and outgunned, their fate seems inevitable. So why is the Doctor preoccupied with a single Viking girl?
the astronaut of death
October 18th, 2015 - 11:09ambest to worst episode so far….

October 18th, 2015 - 11:01amI enjoyed the episode, but it probably ranks as my least favourite episode of series nine so far. Nice explanation though of why the Doctor has the face he has, with flashback scenes to Tennant. In fact, seeing Tennant and Tate again made me feel a bit nostalgic for those times again…maybe things were better for the series then than now.? Of course, the Hybrid is the recurring theme throughout this series…and it’s clearly a hybrid connected to the Doctor’s early past on Gallifrey methinks. Maybe the Eighth Doctor was right…perhaps the Doctor became the hybrid…half time lord, half human? but why and how?
Obsie
October 18th, 2015 - 12:21pmI vehemently do not want the Doctor to half human, half Time Lord.
DOCTOR WHO ONE
October 18th, 2015 - 6:59amOnly thing I largely liked about it was the flashbacks to ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ and ‘Deep Breath’.

October 18th, 2015 - 11:10amSame here 😀
Wildthyme
October 17th, 2015 - 11:25pmNot too bad, reminded me of an old DWM 8th Doctor serial. Especially the ending where he uses alien tech to save the samurai that helped him, which made him immortal… Wonder if she’ll follow the same type of path
GallifreyanKnight
October 17th, 2015 - 11:02pmStandard filler type episode.
Not bad, but not great either.
Average at best.
The Figure Adventurer
October 17th, 2015 - 10:47pmWow. This was… amazing! I loved this episode! A refreshing break from the deep, melodramatic storylines of late. Jamie Mathieson has really topped his game since Flatline which, in my opinion, is one of the best episodes of Doctor Who. It is clear, however, at which point Moffat stepped in… the story actually dips down a little towards the end. But, other than that, this is one of the strongest stories of Doctor Who!
Clarice
October 19th, 2015 - 12:33amI’d have to agree with you about Flatline! That one is one of the absolute best. To clarify, do you mean that the point at which Moffat stepped in and took over the script, is clear? If so, how can you tell? Very curious about this, as you’re not the first commenter to mention that!
The Silent Silent
October 17th, 2015 - 10:28pmOK

October 17th, 2015 - 10:04pmExcellent! This episode seems rather ‘marmite’ compared to the previous ones this series, but personally I loved it! Ashildr could become Big Finish spin-off territory at some point (perhaps not immediately), depending on how next episode plays out.
I loved the bit about his face, I loved Ashildr and I loved that bit with the baby – a tear formed in my eye at some points, but the episode was also a lot of fun.
I can’t pretend that the destruction of the sonic sunglasses didn’t satisfy me – they were a fun gimmick to start with but ultimately they will probably lose their novelty as time goes on – who knows whether they will make a return?
Roll on next week, and the second part in the Ashildr duology!
RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND
October 17th, 2015 - 10:00pmA simple yet effective episode. It also turned out to be very clever, and it had some brilliant character moments. Although, apart from the ending, I don’t think Williams made much of an impact.
Nice nods to Pompeii! That was exciting. Tonnes better than last week. Proves single stories can be just as good as two parters! Nice to have a break.
But, it did get a bit silly at times, although I thought it would be worse in the build up.
Really enjoyed it!
Also, THE FORESHADOWING! My English techniques bingo was bursting
Obsie
October 18th, 2015 - 10:03amI don’t see all the fuss of her being there, not like she was anything special, any other actress could have done the part.

Moog Who Craft!
October 17th, 2015 - 9:35pmOne of the best episodes of Doctor Who ever! Steven Moffat is really upping his game here. Series 5: Great Series 6: Ok (ish) Series 7: Great Series 8: Alright
Series 9: SMASHING! Seriously, one of the best series ever! The first two episodes were superb.
Episode 3 was great, Episode 4 let it down slightly. But Episode 5.. MY GOD!
Maisie williams’s character is not what I expected her to be. I am so glad she was a new character, and not River or Susan, as a lot of people assumed. Her dieing, and then coming back to life again was great, and shows us how far the Doctor will go to keep a human alive, even though that has now made Ashilda immortal.. Hmmmm *cough cough* Captain Jack..
But seriously. A stunning episode, and I really hope we see more episodes like this!
(Also, clara isn’t in the NEXT TIME trailer… Ummmmm)
The eternal doctor
October 17th, 2015 - 9:31pmWatching it again, the only thing that I thought was good about that episode was them on the mire ship, should of been on there longer and the comedy.

October 17th, 2015 - 9:28pmI really enjoyed it, great episode!

October 17th, 2015 - 9:28pmWithout the last few minutes, It would not be a strong episode.:(
The super whovian
October 17th, 2015 - 9:26pmVery good episode I liked the idea about the face but what does that mean about the 2nd and 6th doctor’s faces?
Dem squiggles
October 17th, 2015 - 9:30pmWHy the second doctor
The super whovian
October 17th, 2015 - 9:34pmBecause in The enemy of the world the 2nd doctor had the same face as salamander
76 Totter’s Lane
October 17th, 2015 - 9:38pmAnd the 1st Doctor having the same face of the Abbot of Amboise in ‘The Massacre (of St. Bartholomew’s Eve)’.
Colin Buick
October 18th, 2015 - 10:33amI disagree. The latest doctor got his face from the fires of pompei when he has the 10th doctor’s face. And the sixth doctor’s face was from Arc of Infinity aka commander maxil when he had fifth doctor’s face. So the latest doctor face is from previous encounter so hartnell and troughton cant fall into that category.
Doctor Stu
October 17th, 2015 - 9:25pmI was hoping for a whole episode on his face not just a 20 second scene and I feel making her live forever was a lot crueler than just letting her die it was still better than in the forest of the night though

October 17th, 2015 - 9:22pmWhy did they get rid of the rock theme? It was awesome!
NigelM
October 17th, 2015 - 9:21pmOh dear, the first dud episode of this series. A lot of it simply didn’t make sense. Hopefully a one-off.
CJ
October 17th, 2015 - 9:31pmAlot of it made perfect sense… Just saying
NigelM
October 17th, 2015 - 11:57pmWhat made sense ? That one of the most feared warrior races in the galaxy would bother to use a hologram with a clearly electronic eye-patch ? Why didn’t they just transport the warriors without revealing themselves ? Why give the villagers 24 hours to prepare ? Why did she die after putting on the helmet ? Too many plot holes.

October 17th, 2015 - 9:20pmThought that was great. Was convinced the girl was river whole way through until the end. “Fire in the water” – thought we would see a river regeneration after the med-kit healed her and repaired the regeneration energy. Think we will see anew sonic now too which could link to river
CJ
October 17th, 2015 - 9:33pmIt was the Eleventh Doctor who gave that sonic screwdriver when they visited the singing towers of darillium

October 17th, 2015 - 9:19pmAbsolutely loved it, definitely one of my favourites. The first 10 minutes I thought was terrible but from the Vikings trapped aboard the ship to the end were wonderful. It was very smart they way in which they beat the mire, paired with the Benny Hill theme I thought it was hilarious.
Didn’t really like the character of Ashildr, don’t get why the Doctor needed to save her so badly when so many others have died but it does mean she can now live forever (?) Which is a little too similar to Captain Jack.
Loved seeing Donna again, the music was wonderful and the last shot of Ashildr was wonderfully done (though a little cheesy) would have been great if the land had changed too around her to show the passing of time, like buildings appearing.
Overall the best in this series for me.
CJ
October 17th, 2015 - 9:17pmTold you all she was a new character and finally we know why he has that face!
anon
October 17th, 2015 - 9:34pmCJ, clap clap (!) Everyone else is allowed to have an opinion of who someone is going to be, not just you. So there is no reason to boast, its not like you have written anything in the series. Me and my mates had a bet to guess who she was, a couple said River, 1 said his daughter, i said just a new character to try and get the views up and get a lot of hype during the trailer.
So yeah, Ashildr is a new character, big whoop. time to get on with life again

October 17th, 2015 - 9:40pmHe is just happy he is right

October 18th, 2015 - 11:14amLol 😀
The Temporal Jelly Baby
October 17th, 2015 - 9:17pmI was hoping for something better due to Jamie Mathieson’s first two episodes, which were both very good, especially Mummy on the Orient Express. He wrote the two best episodes of series 8. However, in my episode tanking of the first five episodes of this series, I’d put this 4th or possibly 5th. It was still good, but didn’t live up to my expectations.
The Temporal Jelly Baby
October 17th, 2015 - 9:19pm*ranking, not tanking

October 17th, 2015 - 9:15pmI was so disappointed. The face thing was so bad and the sollution was alright I guess.

October 17th, 2015 - 9:20pmWell they had to think of something but that idea was awfull
The Temporal Jelly Baby
October 17th, 2015 - 9:23pmThey didn’t have to think of something – Moffat could have just left it unexplained. Maybe they just look similar. I’m okay with the explanation though.
character
October 17th, 2015 - 9:29pmSo thats why he took Caecillius’ face, does not explain why we have a doppelganger of Frobisher flying the Tardis though.
100,000BC
October 17th, 2015 - 9:54pmFrobisher the shape-shifting penguin?? Now that would be an interesting regeneration :’D
Just joking, I know who you mean – but Mr. Frobisher’s ancestors probably just migrated from Italy at some point, which explains all of your problems, thank you and goodnight!
Obsie
October 18th, 2015 - 12:34pmTo remind himself to save people, what on earth for ? 52 years (on television anyway) of him being around doing just that and now Moffat throws it in as reason for his new face. Those of us who’ve seen it from it’s early days are used him saving races/people and planets; all I can say is : That’s it ? brilliant reasoning and so well thought out ! (not).
The Five Doctors
October 17th, 2015 - 9:12pmWow, now that was brilliant!

October 17th, 2015 - 9:11pmI have no words….it was pretty terrible up until the last 10 minutes loved seeing Donna again but apart from that I don’t think I’ll be watching that episode again

October 17th, 2015 - 9:09pmVery clever and well written. The throwback to Tennant was great and a bit of reversing the polarity just for fun. It will be interesting to see where this story goes from here.
