What Did You Think of The Rings of Akhaten?

What Did You Think of The Rings of Akhaten?

Having found himself a new companion in the shape of Clara Oswald, the Doctor asks where she wants to go first – and her request for somewhere awesome takes the pair to the rings of the planet Akhaten, inhabited by all manner of amazing creatures.

Clara meets the young queen, who is about to take part in a ceremony called the Festival of Offerings – but what begins as a happy sing-song soon turns very grim. Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman star.

Now that the 2nd episode of series 7b has aired in the UK what did you think?, was it the best episode ever or just average.

When the Doctor said ‘I have lost things you will never understand’, I shed a tear as I thought about the Ponds, Rose, Donna….

This was definitely a miss. The acting was fine but the material was a mix and match of old episodes and instantly forgettable.

What wasn’t so forgettable was the psychobabble and pseudo science.

How can a sun be a vampire if it provides light and warmth to 7 planets as well as a gravitational centre to maintain the rings?

So if you destroy said vampire using a lot of metaphysical holy water, as well sunlight ain’t going to do it, don’t you kill all the planets that depend on it?

Also just like to say motorbikes are cool but followed by clichés such as space scooters are not. Also not cool is ex star war rejects and people breathing and singing in space. I know a large part of the audience are children but Dr Who is “science” fiction first with a bit of fantasy thrown in on the periphery.

Watched it for over 45 years and this is how the show went into the wilderness last time.

I boast to people about what a great show it is and in its return it did really well at first. Matt Smiths first season was exceedingly dodgie until he found his feet with the help of a fez but this is not about the actors this is about the quality of the scripts.

I’d like to be boasting in 20 years time but unless things improve I doubt it. BTW Jenna-Louise is doing very nicely, keep up the good work.

Im sorry and I never ever thought I would hear / see myself saying this but Doctor Who has become boring.

Having seen every episode since 1963, having got every dvd available and having a massive collection of merchandise, believe it or not I consider myself a bit of a fan…. BUT…. Im bored with it.

I think that it could possibly be down to the emphasis the writers appear to be placing on the assistants, or perhaps the ‘humanising’ of the Doctor, or perhaps the romantic, kissy-kissy elements that we are inundated with, or maybe its just lacklustre, boring writing thats doing it, or it might be something else entirely. But. Im bored with it.

I genuinely hope that they do the return of the Ice Warriors greater justice than they did with the Sillurians and that it reignites my passion for Doctor Who once more.

Plus : I really hope they deliver on the 50th anniversary episode but somehow, I wont be holding my breath.

    Im sorry.

Come on Mate, keep the faith! I am the same as you, having every classic adventure currently available. I mean Colin Bakers run was nothing to write home about (No fault of Colins, I blame JNT)If you have every adventure available, you have Time and the Rani!, you have Timelash!

Watch both of those and then watch Rings again, you’ll feel better!

And Matt’s acting in this was stellar and there is the big reveal at the end of the series, as long as Steve dosen’t mess it up (No pressure Steve)

Not quite boring but the quality is dropping. No offense but Colin Bakers Dr was an arrogant, pompass ass and he didn’t need to keep telling us he was an alien as his attitude did not help a series in crisis.

Enough with the mezzo soprano boring annoying pseudo opera singing. How many episodes include this type of bad singing. At least try some other type, style of music.

Come up with a new idea that does not include high voiced bad singing!!!

Disappointing really. Barely even starting and then quickly ending without any good story core. Even a few funny dialogues can’t replace proper screenplay. And Doctor’s ‘confession’ of the end – absolutely unnecessary. It looked like an AA meeting: “just shout it out, maybe it’ll help”.

That’s cos they are totally different leaves.

      Doctor Who Wiki says –

      PRODUCTION ERRORS
The leaf that Clara has in this episode appears to be shaped differently, possibly even having come from a different type of tree than the leaf shown in the previous episode.

I read on another site, can’t remember which, stating that there does appear to be a different leaf used in this story compared to the previous episode.
