What Did You Think of The Rings of Akhaten?

What Did You Think of The Rings of Akhaten?

Having found himself a new companion in the shape of Clara Oswald, the Doctor asks where she wants to go first – and her request for somewhere awesome takes the pair to the rings of the planet Akhaten, inhabited by all manner of amazing creatures.

Clara meets the young queen, who is about to take part in a ceremony called the Festival of Offerings – but what begins as a happy sing-song soon turns very grim. Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman star.

Now that the 2nd episode of series 7b has aired in the UK what did you think?, was it the best episode ever or just average.

I was disappointed by this episode, sure the scene where Clara aids the Doctor, returning by his side was a high in the episode but the rest seemed too focused on the singing.

Yes. I thought the Vampire thing and his servants faded out of the story too quickly

We must be the minority who hated it then. I thught it was two much with the sobby stories to early in the series (from the doctor) and was basically 45mins of dr.who’s section of BBC proms. really disapointed. One of the worst ever episodes of all of dr.who EVER!!
Good aliens but didnt appear enough

The Silent Silent although this is only the scond episode of this series it is Clara’s 5th episode and there has already been a lot of emotion surrounding her, so I don’t see what the problem is with the so called ‘sobby stories’. Personally, I liked it, but I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

      April 6th, 2013 - 11:08pm

To be honest, the episode is a mixed bag, it’s very emotional and deep, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.

You have people who are bored with Doctor Who, then you have this episode which is different, and people just say they hate it 😯

In conclusion I would say try and appreciate it for what it is, it has alot to offer.

I whole heardily agree with McGaan is teh Doctor.

      April 8th, 2013 - 12:49am

There was far too much singing for me. And surely, when all the aliens joined in the song, they should have sounded like a crowd of aliens with grunts and squeaks and woofs. It would probably have sounded daft to have done that, but would possibly have been more believable. Instead they sounded like an ordinary English choir (which is what they were).

So, generally, I don’t rate the story very highly, although visually it looked very good. But just think back a two or three decades or so – you could have a naff story that would last for four whole weeks or more. At least now you can always look forward to next week’s story.

to be honest this episode…… WAS ON OF THE BEST I HAVE EVER SCENE!

where do I start I really liked the start of this ep with the doctor watching Clara growing up that was very moving . I loved the amount of aliens in this episode that was fantastic

i loved the bits when the doctor communicated with the aliens that was funny the relation ship between the queen of years and Clara was good . also the music was good I think that fitted in with the ep well

but the thing i found most brilliant was matt smtihs speech that was the best acting ive seen him do so far

the only bad thing is i hope the doctor dose not do that thing where he drop the companion back at home and return in 1 month

but other all that was A BRILLIANT EPISODE

p.s why dose the tardis not like Clara?

i really do care for the show, but it’s really infuriating seeing (in my opinion) a bad story, knowing that they could do much better. i have started going of Who, because the series’ are split, and the stories are dragged, and some episodes are just terrible. i think we can all agree that we’ve seen an episode and thought this.

yes, i have seen ‘dalek’ and it was one of the poorest episodes of the revived season.
The fact that the dalek showed compassion, and ended up killing itself at the end ruined it. let’s just hope next episodes ice warrior doesn’t start picking flowers for clara and then commit suicide.

    • The 14th Doctor

      April 6th, 2013 - 7:19pm

Maybe they will in the future, but I think just one is a good way to introduce them again. I think they’ll end up being recurring monsters like the Silurians and SOntarans have become.

Joe, Dalek is considered one of the best DW’s ever. If it was as bad as you make out, do you think the Daleks would have appeared six times since then?

with the introduction of ice warriors, it’s make or break. if they want them to recur, they need new ice warrior fans now.

    • Joe

      April 6th, 2013 - 7:24pm

    April 6th, 2013 - 7:09pm

The scene where the Doctor stands up to the sun was amazing, could have been the greatest moment in Doctor Who history, worthy of the 11th Doctors final scene, but they ruin it by having a leaf save the day. The Doctor’s thousand year life of adventure and danger wasn’t enough, apparently.

I agree that the Doctor should be seen as unavailable. The idea, while romantic, that he could have ever fallen for Rose or even Amy and Clara is just very unbelievable. He’s a thousand years old – he’s not going to be interested in teenage girls. However I do think that the ocaisional (unintended) flirtation makes it more fun. Martha’s relationship with him was great. The ‘too sexy’ point of the article isn’t really appropriate. When Doctor Who originally aired there were very few sexual references on tv. The show has evolved as public attitudes have.

Well it was quite complicated but you need to make sure that you are concentrating. They will never be 100 % straight forward.

to be honest, more info on clara doesn’t matter to me, as to me she’s not a new character, she’s been in it 2 times already… maybe.

Well the Clara thing is the series main point tbh . The Clara story seems be good but I don’t understand the hole lets watch Clara as a kid seems to Amy pond to me.

thats true. they shouldn’t look into child companions for a while, as Pond has left her stamp on that, now it’s become a tradition. they need to do new things.

I must say, it was much better than The Bells of Saint John. Although I rated it best episode yet, it wasn’t really, but I had to rate it that because I enjoyed it a lot. I feel as if the main aliens (Vigils, were they called?) should have featured more in the episode, and the singing was a little too much. But overall, a fantastic episode and I give it a 5/5.

i agree, the final singing scene seemed too over dramatic. it felt like the start of a regeneration scene to be honest.
and yeah, the villains should’ve featured more. they reminded me of the silence creatures abit.

      6/10

So you think it deserves a 6/10? Well, everyone to their own opinion, but out of 10 I’d give it a 9.5/10. πŸ™‚

yeah, 10/10 for me is a perfect episode. and so far no episode of Doctor Who i’ve ever seen has been ‘perfect’ as it were.
i would’ve loved it if the villains featured more, and were explained a bit more.

I thought the singing was actually quite beautiful, and the story itself is probably the most beautiful, majestic one so far.

But the story does let itself down, having a leaf save the day instead of the Doctor (literally) and there are scenes that drag too much, e.g they should have said cut after the Doctor said “Any bright ideas, didn’t think so” but he says ANOTHER joke. We get the picture ! You know ? πŸ˜†

i beg to differ. compared to previous episodes (by that i mean all of them) it was shocking. 1/10. and this is me being generous

I beg to differ. Compared to previous episodes (by that I mean all of them) it had many great ideas that were underplayed or gotten rid of to early. 6/10. And this is me being honest.

Booboo could you do a 3.75 poll based on what figures we would like to see from this episode?

I liked the polls on what figures people wanted from each story but as co never listens to what the fans actually want and the fact that I have been put off with the scale change, I not like them I much prefer 5 inch and figures which people want

It must be a new permanent logo then. I’m not sure about it but is it like a shiny silver or stainless steel, either way, it looks good.

good, its a bit stupid when they keep changing the texture of the logo to match the episode

I love how the TARDIS wouldn’t let Clara in! I have three theories why:
      1. River is married to the Doctor. River is the child of the TARDIS. Clara and the Doctor are a little too close.

      2. The doctor mentioned visiting the rings of Akhaten with his granddaughter (called Susan, in case you wanted to know). This was in his first incarnation. That TARDIS belonged to him. It did not recognise Clara.

      3. She didn’t have a key. But I thought the Doctor was in there.

Surely the Translation circuit would have translated the aliens at the start? And why didn’t Clara ask how they were breathing in space?
