Official – Matt Smith To Leave Doctor Who
Matt Smith To Leave Doctor Who
The BBC is today announcing that Matt Smith is to leave Doctor Who after four incredible years on the hit BBC One show.
Matt first stepped into the TARDIS in 2010 and will leave the role at the end of this year after starring in the unmissable 50th Anniversary in November and regenerating in the Christmas Special.
During his time as the Doctor, Matt has reached over 30 million unique UK viewers and his incarnation has seen the show go truly global. He was also the first actor to be nominated for a BAFTA in the role.
Matt quickly won over fans to be voted Best Actor by Readers of Doctor Who Magazine for the 2010 season. He also received a nod for his first series at the National Television Awards, before winning the Most Popular Male Drama Performance award in 2012.
Matt has played one of the biggest roles in TV with over 77 million fans in the UK, USA and Australia alone!
Matt Smith says: “Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.
“Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind-bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It’s been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he’s a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.
“The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!
“It’s been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt.”
Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, says: “Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he’d turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently.
“And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him – sometimes literally – his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.
“But great actors always know when it’s time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt – bow ties were never cooler.
“Of course, this isn’t the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now – all unknowing, just going about their business – is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that’s still so exciting!”
Having starred alongside three different companions, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and most recently Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), Matt’s Doctor has fought Daleks and Cybermen, as well as Weeping Angels in New York. Regularly heard shouting ‘run’ and ‘Geronimo’, through Matt’s Doctor fans have been introduced to a new culinary combination – fish fingers and custard!
Matt’s spectacular exit is yet to be revealed and will be kept tightly under wraps. He will return to BBC One screens in the unmissable 50th anniversary episode on Saturday 23 November 2013 – TUNE IN!
Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One

June 2nd, 2013 - 1:03pmtrue, Keith would make it dirty. Danny Horn who played middle Kazran from A Christmas Carol would be really good and brill, I think anyway. Just always had that feeling, ever since that episode. Although will really miss Matt.

June 1st, 2013 - 11:38pmIf moffat makes the doctor a woman, that makes him a downright nasty demon. Nuff said.

June 1st, 2013 - 11:23pmCan I express an opinion on this site? I can’t seem to without the comment being deleted on any other site.
booboo
June 1st, 2013 - 11:25pmits depends on what follow up its likely to get
personally i think if they had cast Joanna lumley some years ago i think she could have carried it
videogamemad00
June 1st, 2013 - 11:26pmI only have to say “I’m glad Matt’s leaving” and it gets deleted.
booboo
June 1st, 2013 - 11:29pmcomments like that will attract aggressive follow ups, its happened twice on here already and things just get into a a slanging match so i’m not surprised
videogamemad00
June 1st, 2013 - 11:31pmI normally provide reasons but even they get deleted.
booboo
June 1st, 2013 - 11:35pmif its anything like this site you will still get aggressive follow ups that you may not even see, if there aren’t any the comment may stay
its all about keeping things under control because things can get out of hand in a matter of minuets
usually on facebook of youtube you can say what you like
videogamemad00
June 1st, 2013 - 11:42pmYes I understand why it is done it just annoying me. Especially when people asked me why and I couldn’t reply because I’d been blocked/banned and everyone took me for a troll.
booboo
June 1st, 2013 - 11:44pmits just the nature of the internet
we run a very tight ship here very good reason
I’ve just had to get rid of a few because people started to argue about Coronation street being better than Doctor who
videogamemad00
June 1st, 2013 - 11:50pmYes I saw those. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my comments 🙂
JJ
June 2nd, 2013 - 12:30amall I said is that I think Corrie is first/second favourite of my programmes and so is Doctor Who and that Doctor Who was first as solo, but since series 7 part 2, it isn’t. Just an opinion, not meaness. I also got band from Doctor Who TV just because I said that I thought the downrating on it was tight, wrong and mean, alos that love and monsters was one of my fave eps and that I wasn’t too keen on series 7 part 2 and that it did upset me and then I got blocked/banned and I am now really upset over it. Thank god this is a good site.

June 1st, 2013 - 11:03pmI think Matt Smith is leaving at the right time. He’s done 3 series and that is the average for someone to play the Doctor. I’m hoping they go for a slightly older actor, not like the age of John Hurt, but maybe someone in their late thirties/early forties.
booboo
June 1st, 2013 - 11:04pmoh well that rules Roger Moore out then
dalekste
June 1st, 2013 - 11:01pmIF THE DOCTOR IS A WOMAN, I WILL NEVER WATCH THE SHOW AGAIN!!!
booboo
June 1st, 2013 - 11:03pmnot even if she becomes a he again
videogamemad00
June 1st, 2013 - 11:06pmI think it would be quite good if they had at least 1 female (canon) doctor.
Anonymous
June 1st, 2013 - 11:20pmWe know Time Lords can choose to change genders during regeneration (the Corsair did this)…so if after 10 regenerations, the Doctor has always opted to remain a male…it would make no sense for him to become femail now…so in my opnion it would be a short sighted move nothing short of a gimick by the writters should they opt to do this.
dalekste
June 2nd, 2013 - 5:04pmIf he just regenerated into a woman i wouldn’t watch it, but if there is some sort of reason, like river’s regeneration energy that she gave the doctor was female energy and that the next time he regenerated his cells would reconstruct him into a woman. but if he just changed into a woman from a man because time lords can magically change there gender when ever they regenerate now, then no i won’t watch the show.
UnitedGamers2013
June 1st, 2013 - 10:59pmI’ve got a feeling that Moffat will be leaving too. Because he said in an interview
“I’m closer to the end of my time than the beginning”
Very sad news. Don’t think I will sleep tonight and I think it’s ruined the feel of the 50th knowing he will be leaving in the episode after that. Lets just say its not going to be a very happy christmas

June 2nd, 2013 - 5:29amI want mark gatiss to take over as head writer
GingerDoctorMania
June 2nd, 2013 - 9:08amTotaly Agree, all of gatis’ episodes have been like 10x better that maffats and T Davis’.
the doctor
June 2nd, 2013 - 9:51amYeah, Mark Gatis’s episodes are hell better than moffats.
JJ
June 2nd, 2013 - 1:19pmNO!
Mark Gatiss:
Good Episodes: The Unquiet Dead (brilliant)
Not so good episodes: The Idiot’s Lantern (wasn’t really good),
Victory Of The Daleks (was quite ok and good, until the spit fire bit, that was just so ridiculously stupid.)
Night Terrors (was sort of good actually, until the magic wand (as I call it) or as you, others may know it as the Deus Ex-Machina, which is basically like an easy way out of the/an story, it was just stupid how they resolved the story and another waste of an episode, that could have been good, fantastic, brilliant and great.)
Cold War (was not actually that good, they were just rushed into the adventure too quickly. Bad writing. One minute, the Ice Warriors walking about, then Skaldak’s trapped, then he’s out of his shell, after feeling he had lost his honour and that was only his last result, apparently, then he’s back in and then he’s threatening to press the button and then the others come and then he’s gone, so yet again, what a waste of an episode.)
The Crimson Horror (was sooo good, until the mr.sweet bit, it just absolutely killed it and it was kinda wrong.)
So no way is or should be Mark Gatiss as the head writer, just no way. Please. Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat for EVER!
Dalek: the Supreme
June 2nd, 2013 - 1:57pmI liked a lot of Gatiss’s episodes, The Unquiet Dead, Victory of the Daleks, Night Terrors, Cold War, and The Crimson Horror were all great in my opinion. I haven’t seen The Idiot’s Lantern in a while, so not sure about that one.
Ewan McGreagor
June 1st, 2013 - 10:58pmI would love to see Ewan McGregor as the Doctor!
Unknown
June 1st, 2013 - 10:57pmIf the 12th doctor is a woman then Suranne Jones and move the show to later on to make it more appealing to older audience or if it’s a guy then Scott Maslen he would give the doctor a darker side and since he is leaving EastEnders when Ronnie returns he would be available Doctor Who just needs to move away from this childish image they have gotten Jenna Louise Coleman was a amazing actress in Emmerdale and Waterloo Road.Doctor Who need to give her darker plots
olletsoc
June 1st, 2013 - 11:11pmScott Maslen would be awesome, imagine him with the Daleks. “shat ap will ya?” *SMACK*

June 1st, 2013 - 10:57pmPersonally I want a younger doctor, as he has to run around and stuff. I know we have had older ones, but I like them young and like matt and David, more fun

June 1st, 2013 - 11:11pmWe need someone more serious, and older than Matt Smith.

Richard
June 1st, 2013 - 10:39pmYou say he’s been with the show for four years, BUT it’s only been three series cause Moffett cheated us out of 2013 series by spliting 2012 season in half. We’ve been cheated out of a full series of the brilliant Matt Smith, if anyone should go it needs to be Moffett and let someone who cares about the viewers take over…..
JJ
June 1st, 2013 - 11:41pmsteven is still great. I would love to be in Doctor Who!
Anonymous
June 2nd, 2013 - 5:27amI think that Moffat should be the one to go and replace him with someone who care’s about the show
JJ
June 2nd, 2013 - 1:11pmI think he does care about the show. He is the best writer EVER, in my opinion. He has let down the show this year though (2013), but his episodes were better than all the others of 2013, so ya’ know. He and Russell T Davies should be encharge.
Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat should write the series openers.
Steven Moffat should write the mid-series finale.
Russell T Davies should write the mid-series opener.
Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat should write the series finale.
Get Chris Chibnall to do an episode like all his others, BUT NOT LIKE THE POWER OF THREE, as that was awful.
Toby Whithouse to do an episode like A Town Called Mercy, BUT NOT HIS OTHERS, AS THEY WERE NOT GOOD EITHER, APART FROM SCHOOL REUNION. WHICH WAS OK.
Paul Cornell to write one (s1&3)
Robert Shearman (s1:Dalek)
John Fay (new)
Mark Gatiss (if he can do an episode as good as The Unquiet Dead and as good as the first half of The Crimson Horror.
Tom MacRae to do a brill episode like ALL of his others.
Gareth Roberts to do an episode as good as The Shakespeare Code and as good as the first half of The Lodger and Closing Time.
3 new writers, would be good?
Just my thoughts lol

June 1st, 2013 - 10:33pmno what he very carefully said i think was “we” are coming back for series 8.
Its a bit like if you support a football team and you say “we didn’t play very well this week” when you were actually never playing!
