Official – Matt Smith To Leave Doctor Who

Matt Smith To Leave Doctor Who

The BBC is today announcing that Matt Smith is to leave Doctor Who after four incredible years on the hit BBC One show.

Matt first stepped into the TARDIS in 2010 and will leave the role at the end of this year after starring in the unmissable 50th Anniversary in November and regenerating in the Christmas Special.

During his time as the Doctor, Matt has reached over 30 million unique UK viewers and his incarnation has seen the show go truly global. He was also the first actor to be nominated for a BAFTA in the role.

Matt quickly won over fans to be voted Best Actor by Readers of Doctor Who Magazine for the 2010 season. He also received a nod for his first series at the National Television Awards, before winning the Most Popular Male Drama Performance award in 2012.

Matt has played one of the biggest roles in TV with over 77 million fans in the UK, USA and Australia alone!

Matt Smith says: “Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

“Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind-bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It’s been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he’s a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

“The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

“It’s been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt.”

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, says: “Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he’d turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently.

“And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him – sometimes literally – his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.

“But great actors always know when it’s time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt – bow ties were never cooler.

“Of course, this isn’t the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now – all unknowing, just going about their business – is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that’s still so exciting!”

Having starred alongside three different companions, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and most recently Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), Matt’s Doctor has fought Daleks and Cybermen, as well as Weeping Angels in New York. Regularly heard shouting ‘run’ and ‘Geronimo’, through Matt’s Doctor fans have been introduced to a new culinary combination – fish fingers and custard!

Matt’s spectacular exit is yet to be revealed and will be kept tightly under wraps. He will return to BBC One screens in the unmissable 50th anniversary episode on Saturday 23 November 2013 – TUNE IN!

In picking Daniel Day-Lewis as the next Doctor I started with my movie thesis (see above). So, why did I pick Daniel above other experienced movie actors? He was Born and raised in London and he has a home in Ireland, so check all the pre-requisite boxes. Everything I have read about Daniel says he is very discriminating in the rolls he chooses. An Iconic roll like Doctor Who might just interest him. Most importantly, Daniel has a long history of working with the BBC! Does anyone else agree with my pick? What do you think?

I now believe it’s going to be either Ben Daniels, or Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Both would suit the role very well, but people in the supposed know, have said Ben Daniels has got the part. No idea how correct they are. But they were 100% spot on about Smith getting the part at least a month before anyone else knew.

Will he perhaps face his worse fear from the episode of the bldg. w/rooms containing each of their worse fears before he regenerates? Amy walked into a room of weeping angels as her worse fear and that did indeed end up being her final downfall…we never got to see what was behind his fear door.

I totally agree with Mels (post above). Getting a movie made is all about money/funding. That’s why I think a Doctor Who movie is coming very soon. It’s easy to get funding for a movie if the subject matter is currently hot and successful. Remember all the vampire movies and TV shows that came out of nowhere soon after the huge success of Twilight? So the question is. What is the hottest movie subject in the last 2 or 3 years? That’s an easy one, it’s hero/science fiction movies. Doctor Who fits that category nicely, so funding for a Doctor Who move should be easier to get than it ever has been! I highly suspect the BBC will look for a financial partner to split the cost and risk of a movie with. Marvel was producing many of its movies in partnership with Sony Pictures before Disney bought marvel. Sony Pictures has got to be looking hard for a new partner right now!

They need to choose the best possible actor to play the Doctor. They can’t just choose a random person who might not be a good actor.

What if they already made a stealth move? According to the official press release the 50th Anniversary Special is going to be feature length, shot in 3D on Cinema type equipment and will be shown in theaters (all be it a limited release) and it stars a big time movie actor (John Hurt). The release date is even November 23rd, right ahead of the critical Thanksgiving Holliday on the US. This is one of the most common times of the year for a US movie release. Coincidence? I think not! The only fact that I can’t fit into my theory yet is Matt leaving, but I’m working on it.

Movie rumours have been flying around for years and will likely continue as long as the show is on the air. Raising money/funding a movie (talking millions here), casting, writing etc takes many, many years – and this is presuming that they are trying to get one made in the first place (which I don’t think they are at this stage, unless someone with the funds has approached the BBC).

There are some cases like the 2013 TARDIS, “Cold War” Ice Warriors, and Paradigm Daleks where I prefer the New Series design to the Classic one, but I’ll still take the Haemovores and the Cybermen of the 60’s and 80’s over the Slitheen and the Absorbaloff anyday.

So because of a relatively tiny problem, you think Doctor Who is getting ruined? Sorry, that sounds a little ridiculous.

I think that doctor who has become too politicly correct.

No I am not racist Im just stating my opinion

most of the historical stories have to have a black or asian person other wise watchdog groups will moan and they have to pretend that the nasty parts of history never happond

Don’t let censors ruin doctor who

  • NO MATT CANT LEAVE NOW

    June 5th, 2013 - 10:46am

AND THATS WHAT MAKES DR WHO BETTER
Young, hot, smart and smexy lil brittish men who are like Matt smith
12th dr should be Benedict Cumberbatch
    although that’s never gtonna happen

  • NO MATT CANT LEAVE NOW

    June 5th, 2013 - 10:44am

    No, untrue

We saw Rose’s whole life, birth death and everything else inbetween
how moffat and gattis gonna explain that
plus dr who has to be a man who is BRITTISH

  • NO MATT CANT LEAVE NOW

    June 5th, 2013 - 10:42am

then the tenth dr would meet a reincarnation of himself
and plus jack was the Face of Boe
and the doctor watched the face of boe die
so the doctor witnessed his own death
yet his own death is at Trenzalore
    so no
    it cant be john barrowman

  • NO MATT CANT LEAVE NOW
