No full Doctor Who Series for 2012 – update
No full 2012 Doctor Who series
From Steven Moffat via twitter…
Dr Who: misquotes and misunderstandings. But I’m not being bounced into announcing the cool stuff before we’re ready. Hush, and patience.
lizo_mzimba said via his twitter feed that “There will not be a full series of Dr Who in 2012! BBC confirms that BBC One Controller said this earlier today”
The news was originally revealed by Wayne Clarke who was at a conference where Danny Cohen was speaking.
This may mean that although 14 new episodes are to be made, they may be spread over 2 years. This may be nothing more than a build up to 2013, the shows 50th anniversary.
He also said: “Worth repeating, BBC says Danny Cohen’s comment that Steven Moffat needed time for Sherlock hence shorter DW run wasn’t meant to be serious.”
later adding “Bit of confusion, to summarise: no FULL 13 episode series of Dr Who in 2012. So some episodes will still go out in 2012. Remainder in 2013.”

It hasn’t lost any viewers at all-thats a fact.
If it was because of doctor who being bad then they would get a different writer/doctor.

June 15th, 2011 - 7:24pmDear RORYDOCTORRIVERPOND to me it seems like you don’t like the show so maybe you should stop complaining and realise that its awesome!
Harry
June 15th, 2011 - 12:44pmI wonder if they are building up to some really major stuff in 2013 for the 50th anniversary
Mels
June 15th, 2011 - 1:53pmIt would be interesting if they did some 90 minute episodes, like what they’re doing with Sherlock.
…Not that I’m sure Doctor Who actually suits that format, but I think the BBC/Mofatt will pounce something new on us at any rate… After watching the whovians out there implode from guessing first of course…
RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND
June 15th, 2011 - 3:55pmI THINK THE TIME LENGTH OF DOCTOR WHO AT THE MOMENT IS PERFECT FOR THE SHOW, A 90 MINUTE EP WOULD BE QUITE BORING WOULDN’T YOU SAY?

June 15th, 2011 - 12:46pmyes, to much misinformation going about now, hopefully this all about a big 2013 plan as others have said
I Love Cybermen
June 15th, 2011 - 11:43amThis better not be true! I’m going to explode with rage! When everything else is rubbish on tv, why pick on good old Dr Who?!!!
Daleks on Ice
June 15th, 2011 - 12:04pmBecause an hour of Dr Who costs significantly more than an hour of anything else on the BBC so sadly is likely at the top of the list for savings.
king gerbil
June 15th, 2011 - 7:25pmWell yes, but does anything else have such a high product profit?
Anonymous
June 15th, 2011 - 9:24amThey should cut programs like Casualty, Luthor, Eastenders and other rubish programs so thay can put the millions they spend on these programs and put into Dr Who to keep it going
Mels
June 15th, 2011 - 10:52amIf it is a budgeting problem it really shouldn’t be happening… Doctor Who would be making a fortune in DVD/Blu-ray sales, toys and merchandising royalties all over the world, more than enough to fund itself and then some…
I guess we’ll find out soon what’s going on.
booboo
June 15th, 2011 - 11:08amThere is total confusion on what’s being reported and what was actually said the beeb need to put out a press release on this asap
YT
June 15th, 2011 - 11:11amI have seen one big site say there will be a full series in 2013 but i dont think anyone actually said that. Confused
Ian
June 15th, 2011 - 11:32amThe thing on the merchandising is that it would tick over as well with 6eps next year as it would with 13 so as long as the show has explosure to the public to keep the brand awareness up they wont look at it as a potential loss. The money that comes in doesnt go to a specific Dr Who money pot, it goes to fund the entire BBC so from a commissioning point of view they would look at cost of sets, actors, scripts, fx, technical aspects (music, location costs etc) and that wouldnt be valued against Dr Who related income. The main thing here is its not cancelled and remains a big BBC flagship brand so we are at least guaranteed that there will be some Dr Who in the next year, albeit not as much as we would like.

June 15th, 2011 - 12:45pmEchoes of 1989 I’m thinking here.(God I hope not!!!!)
MORLU
June 16th, 2011 - 9:13amLuther is an excellent series
MORLU
June 15th, 2011 - 9:17amI would rather have some Who in a year than have to wait until 2013 for a whole series.
Mels
June 15th, 2011 - 8:29amThis is odd, and unfortunate. I love Sherlock and Doctor Who so I’m torn on having less Doctor Who if it means more Sherlock…
My impression is that Mofatt will churn them out as much as he can before he implodes… we may end up with the series delayed a bit and part of the series running over December/January, thus why we may not get ‘full series in 2012’.
Oh well, good things come to those who wait. And… I think we should wait for clarification on this before getting upset about it! This Twitter feed is vague at best.

June 15th, 2011 - 8:20amYet again the BBC are sidelining the fans of this amazing show and treating them with awesome disrespect and contempt. This “Announcement” (if thats what it can be called ?) is not only unclear, if its true it makes no sense what so ever ! This seems like a case of cutting of their noses to spite their faces. The future of the show needs to me made 100% clear by the BBC and soon. Come one BBC Get your act together ! Dont treat the fans like idiots or you run the risk of losing them and subsequently Dr Who alltogether !
Ian
June 15th, 2011 - 7:54amI can see some with creative issues on RTD and or Moffatt are already trying to have a go that this is the reason but trust me, it wont be. This will be a money driven decision so someone up there in the accounts dept can offset the budget to produce it over more financial quarters. At the end of the day , unfortunately, creatives make the shows but the accountants and managers make these sort of decisions. There is already talk on having to save money by maybe cancelling BBC 3 or BBC 4 or reducing BBC2s hours and they are selling off BBC Centre. Dr Who is in that money saving mix too. The best we can hope is that maybe money is being saved in the 2011-2012 budget to increase the options to spend more on the 2013 anniversary shows.
Lewis
June 15th, 2011 - 7:48amIf they haven’t got enough money to make another series of Doctor Who, why don’t they get rid of some of the rubbish shows that no one really cares about like So you think you can dance or Strictly come dancing, no one watches them and there viewers havent been as high as doctor who.
Its obvious BBC dont have any common sense.
DoctorLou
June 15th, 2011 - 7:32amWHY! I hated the split, and now there not even having many eps in 2012! Its stupid! THEY BETTER NOT HAVE 4 SPEICALS LIKE 2 YEARS AGO!
Peter
June 15th, 2011 - 7:27amI think the BBC needs to clarify what is happening here
Thetasigma
June 15th, 2011 - 10:38amYou’ve absolutely hit the nail on the head here ! This confusion being put out by the bbc is mad and only serves to upset the fans ! Come on BBC Get your act together and make a proper formal announcement about the future of the show !
Cyberdevil
June 15th, 2011 - 7:13amBBC WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS! MOFFAT SHOULD EITHER DO ONE OR THE OTHER!!! OR TAKE MORE OF A BACKSEAT ROLE. DOCTOR WHO IS THE MIAN REASON I WATCH BBC 1. BE PREPARED FOR AN OUTRAGE
Fox Mulder

June 14th, 2011 - 11:40pmCommon people, quit jerking around the fans or they are going to lose interest…
First you skipped 2009 for a handful of specials all the while going into it saying “we are doing this so we can KEEP Tennant” THEN you pull a syfy and split the season over spring and fall rather than give it to us on schedule…
NOW you’re saying, oh, well we just don’t have TIME, so we’ll put half in 2012 and half in 2013…
Well guess what, I won’t be watching any of the other shows you’re working on… and I’m only watching DR, cause I have a love for it from the old series…
What is it about BBC and killing perfectly good shows in their prime (Torchwood, Dr etc)
Mark
June 14th, 2011 - 11:20pmMaybe a spinoff with new writers, would be an alternative. This gives the young blood a chance too. Eventually these writers can write new exciting episodes for DW. 🙂
Jazpyy
June 14th, 2011 - 11:09pmIts bad enough that they split series 6 in half, but now its gonna be a few episodes, then a years wait for a few more? How is this better for fans Mr Moffat?
michael
June 14th, 2011 - 10:54pmi agree with the first comment, if Moffat can’t do both he should not risk the other… hand it back to RTD! this is ridiulous! its like doing a mini series over and over again! doctor who used to have loads of episodes packed into a single series… and from 2005 the 13 episode + chrismas special plan was working fine… if he keeps going the way he is, it will loose its place and eventually get taken off our screens again 🙁
Emma
June 14th, 2011 - 10:47pmThis sucks big time! i hated the long wait for all the specials when DT left but no full series in 1 year? 2012 & 2013 for series 7? now thats stupid!
Jeremy
June 14th, 2011 - 10:43pmThey have a good thing here. I hope they dont screw it up splitting it up and keeping people waiting. it can really hurt the series more than they realize.
Geneva Man
June 14th, 2011 - 10:37pmConsidering the quality of this current series it doesn,t surprise me in the least.
I was never a great lover of RTD and expected great things of Moffatt but it is now obvious that RTD was reining in his more bizarre ideas, now he has control we have all seen the result of it.
2010 series, average
2011 series, drivel
simon w
June 14th, 2011 - 10:25pmif they keep doing this then Dr Who will be removed from our tv’s again like in the 80’s. If he’s finding it hard to do both Sherlock then they should ask Russell T Davies back as head writer.
simon w
June 14th, 2011 - 10:27pmI ment to put down Shorlock and Dr Who
\James:
June 14th, 2011 - 10:35pmI totally agree with you
The Doctor
June 15th, 2011 - 6:36amExactly how I feel! I’m not happy about this
Ian
June 15th, 2011 - 7:11amI dont think it will be driven by Moffatt, it will be driven by cost. Sadly the BBC has to make massive cuts in its Budget due to being forced to accept this by the Tory led government (a major donator to the Tories is Rupert Murdoch who has an anti BBC stance). With the cuts in budget and the show being very expensive for the BBC to make, they will be trying to stagger the cost of production over a longer period. Its a real shame that its being looked at this way as it brings in a larger revenue to the BBC too so I would have thought they could model future profit against initial costs. The other way is to get into a deal with another TV org, like has been done for Torchwood but this risks fundementally changing the show. It may be a creative decision but I really think its a financial one. What we need to press is the BBC to invest a sum into 2013 that will give it the anniversary it deserves.
Who
June 14th, 2011 - 10:13pm2 years! That is a long time for one season! Or is it 1 season brken in half again>
