River Song to Return in 2015 Christmas Special

Alex Kingston returns to Cardiff to reclaim her role as Professor River Song for the highly anticipated 2015 Doctor Who Christmas special, part of BBC One’s essential seasonal viewing.

It’s Christmas Day in the future and the TARDIS is parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure. Time traveller River Song meets her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas.

Day one of filming the 10th Doctor Who Christmas special starts this week and is written by Lead Writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, executive produced by Brian Minchin, produced by Nikki Wilson and directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who, Sherlock).

River Song made her first Doctor Who appearance in 2008 in ‘Silence in the Library’ and ‘Forest of the Dead’ and has appeared in 15 episodes to date.

Award-winning Alex Kingston comments on her reappearance: “To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humor and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through. We had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September?, why not!”

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer adds: “Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who – and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her, she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time…”

The witty line-up of guest cast joining Alex for a magical adventure on the TARDIS will be announced over the coming months.

Absolutely NOT! She is a bad idea for a character, and how do they think it’ll work with the 12th?

I really don’t want to see that argument coming from someone who’s supposed to be the Master…

The drawback of being any kind of Whovian; as many if not more things to gripe about than be pleased with.

You sure? I though the last time we saw her was when the weeping angels got Amy and Rory. I thought she said to the Doctor that she’d pop in from time to time, or something like that @CJ

I don’t know though, you may be right =)

THIS IS THE MOST BRILLIANT NEWS! She is one of the most awesome characters in the series. I love her with the 11th doctor most though however I’m sure it’ll be great and funny to see with her 12. *naughty smile* waiting for it!! >.<

No I’m sure it was because before River went to the Library, The 11th Doctor took her to Darillium to see the Singing Towers or something and that is where he gave River the sonic screwdriver

The best thing to happen with the River Song character was when the Nashta Verrada stripped her to the bone and there Moffat should have left it.Michelle Gomez as Missy is the REAL co star now!

Bring on the Christmas special, even though she had a good ending in series 7 I can’t wait to see her again in the Christmas special. Her character is different to every other character and in a good way, I love river’s character just as much as I love Osgood’s.
